We are delighted to present the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering (SMCSE) Careers Events programme 2018/19. It has been designed to give you an insight into a range of careers options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, summer placements, year-long placements and graduate jobs within the mathematics, computer science and engineering sectors. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and alumni from the School. This guide contains an overview of the central mathematics, computer science and engineering careers events at City, University of London in the autumn term and a snapshot of what is coming up in the spring term. The programme has been designed in collaboration with the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering for both undergraduate and postgraduate Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering students, as well as students from other disciplines who are interested in pursuing a career in these sectors.

Help with your career Meet your Placement’s team: The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) We strongly encourages all students to undertake professional experience (summer internships or a one-year industrial placement) as part of their degree as it is an excellent way to get an insight into the industry and gain valuable professional experience. The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) works closely with students and employers to support industrial placements. There are numerous benefits to gaining professional experience; having a competitive edge when entering the graduate job market, placements are paid and placement students develop professional skills as well as industry specific technical skills. Placements usually take place during the penultimate year of study i.e. after part two for Computer Science and Mathematics BSc students and after part three for MEng/MSci students.and having a competitive edge when entering the job market. All students can undertake a summer internship on completion of stage one, stage two or stage three if on the MEng/MSci route. City students undertake placements at a range of employers ranging from start-up ventures to multinational corporations. Previous placement students have gained a deeper knowledge of the industry as well as the various career paths available to them after graduation. Some of our students have also secured graduate employment at the company in which they undertook their industrial placement.
The PLU advertise hundreds of placement and internship vacancies each year which students can access through our dedicated online placements vacancy system, InPlace available at placements.city.ac.uk. Placement opportunities are advertised to students throughout the year and professional development workshops are also provided to support students from each department to make successful applications. A key part of the preparation for industrial placement is attending relevant events which are arranged each year and students are encouraged to attend as many events are possible. You can find a summary of the events for SMCSE students throughout this guide. Please note that due to space limitations, only students who have registered for events will be able to attend so register early to avoid disappointment. Each SMCSE department has a specialist Work Based Learning Advisor from the PLU to support their students. Meet your Careers Consultant All City students and recent graduates can book an appointment with one of our career consultants. They offer three main types of appointment to suit different requirements: overview appointments, career guidance appointments and mock interview appointments.
David graduated with a BA (Hons) in American Studies and later an MSc in Information Systems. He also is a Certified Practitioner in Neurolinguistic Programming. He has over nine years’ experience in careers guidance in a higher education setting, both at Brunel University and City, University of London. Prior to that he spent seven years working in the IT industry as an IT consultant and as a graduate recruiter of Engineering and Computer Science students for Logica (now CGI). David works closely with the Schools of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering at City. He delivers bespoke workshops for these student groups in consultation with the School. Preparation session – making the most of the Engineering, Mathematics and Technology Fair Monday 15th October 2018, 13:00 – 14:00 Join the Careers Service and Fair sponsor Tata Consultancy Services to discuss best practices for making the most of the Engineering, Mathematics and Technology Fair. This session will cover: • Researching exhibiting organisations prior to the Fair • Understanding the art of successful networking • How to make a good first impression on the day • The employer perspective – what they really want • How attending the Fair can help you make your application stand out if you apply to one of the exhibiting organisations • W hat you can expect from the Fair depending on your year and level of study. Fair break-out sessions During the Fair, there will be three break-out sessions taking place that will be hosted by some of the organisations taking part in the event. They will be delivering sessions related to their industries and giving insight into the employability skills needed to succeed in them. Employability Skills Programme The Employability Skills Programme, sponsored by KPMG, will prepare you to make the transition from education to work, exploring all aspects of the selection and recruitment process. These sessions will cover the skills that are most valued by recruiters, how you can reflect on these and how to articulate your experiences clearly when talking to employers.
