It has been designed to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, summer and graduate jobs within the arts and social sciences sectors. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and SASS alumni. This guide contains an overview of the central SASS careers events at City, University of London in the autumn term and a snapshot of what is coming up in the spring term. The programme has been designed in collaboration with the School of Arts and Social Sciences for both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as students from other disciplines who are interested in pursuing a career in these industries. The majority of the events within this booklet will be advertised on City CareersHub. Antonia has a BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Kent and the Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Guidance from the University of Reading. She has over 30 years’ experience of providing careers guidance, including 10 years in universities. Antonia is also a qualified teacher and has worked as a teacher within the adult education sector, as well as in management.

Estanis has a BA in Advertising and Public Relations from Universidad Complutense in his home town of Madrid, Spain and a PGDip in Careers Education, Information and Guidance from the University of Warwick. He held various jobs in publishing, marketing and sales in Madrid before re-locating to London in 2001. He then worked for John Lewis Plc in several positions.

Antonia works closely with the School of Arts and Social Sciences and will be delivering careers workshops for students from this School and other disciplines throughout the year. Look out for these workshops and one-to-one appointments with Antonia at the Careers Service, bookable via City CareersHub on careershub.city.ac.uk/students.

Estanis’s professional interests include facilitating group work, one-to-one guidance, ability tests and personality profiling, for which he holds a qualification accredited by the British Psychological Society. Estanis will be involved in the teaching of modules for Sociology and Journalism and also facilitating workshops for arts courses. You can also meet Estanis in one-to-one appointments at the Careers Service bookable via City CareersHub on careershub.city.ac.uk/students.

How to write a winning CV and cover letter Monday 8th October 2018, 13:00 – 14:00 Thursday 25th October 2018, 12:00 – 13:00 Employers spend less than a minute looking over a CV before deciding to take it to the next stage or not. This session will teach you how to create a CV that has impact. It will cover language, content and layout. You will also learn how to write a convincing cover letter and how to avoid typical student pitfalls. The session is for anyone who is applying for an internship, placement, a first professional job, a part-time student role, volunteering opportunity or postgraduate course. ALL

Careers with a Criminology and Sociology degree panel event Thursday 11th October 2018, 18:00 – 20:00 The aim of the event is to help students studying Sociology and Criminology to understand the wide array of career options available to them, to hear first-hand from employers about their recommendations for getting a foot in the door and to help them make more informed career choices. How to choose a career Tuesday 16 October 2018, 13:00 – 14:00 th

If you are completely clueless or unsure what you want to do as a future career, this session will get you thinking about your personal values and skillset in relation to careers to make sure you find a good match. You will become confident about where to look for further information, how to gain relevant work experience and how to get an edge on getting into the right career for you quickly after university. Sandwich Year on a work placement information session Wednesday 17th October 2018, 15:00 – 18:00 During this information session, aimed at penultimate year students, you will have an opportunity to: • Learn about the Sandwich Year Integrated Professional Training Programme, discuss the benefits of participating and find out how to apply • Hear first-hand experience from students who successfully participated in Integrated Professional Training Programmes and ask them questions. The session will end with a networking opportunity to allow you to speak with participants and ask them questions in a more relaxed setting. ALL

How to get an internship or placement Monday 22nd October 2018, 13:00 – 14:00 Research shows that doing an internship or placement at university (or soon afterwards) is one of the best ways of getting into the career you want quickly after university. An internship may be paid or unpaid, part-time or full-time, but competition for places is high. Find out what is available, how and when to apply and learn

Sandwich Year studying abroad interactive information session Wednesday 24th October 2018, 13:30 – 17:00 During this info session, aimed at penultimate year students, you will have an opportunity to: • Hear first-hand experiences from students who have just returned from a year abroad followed by a Q&A session • Learn more about specific exchange destinations and partner institutions • Discuss the benefits of participating and find out how to apply. Fair preparation session – making the most of the Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair

City’s Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair

Join the Careers Service and Fair sponsor Ernst and Young (EY) to discuss best practice and give you networking tips for making the most at the annual Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair. This session will cover: • Researching exhibiting organisations prior to the Fair • Understanding the art of successful networking • How to make a good first impression on the day • The employer perspective – what they really want • How attending the Fair can help you make your application stand out if you apply to one of the exhibiting organisations • W hat you can expect from the Fair depending on your year and level of study. Students who register and attend one of these sessions will be given a fast-track pass which will allow priority entry to the Fair during the first hour (14:00 – 15:00). This session is the perfect opportunity to enhance your use of the Fair as a platform to speak with graduate employers and industry professionals. ALL

Fair break-out sessions During the Fair, there will be three break-out sessions taking place that will be hosted by some of the organisations taking part in the event. They will be delivering sessions related to their industries and giving insight into the employability skills needed to succeed in them.

Find out what sort of careers are available in government and politics, whether you are a politics student or not. Some careers need a good understanding of politics, others require perhaps a masters or at least a first degree in Politics, whilst some roles take applicants from all backgrounds. The focus will on what skills you have to offer.

The Market Research Society and The Association for Qualitative Research roadshow Thursday 15th November 2018, 12:00 – 13:00 The roadshow is an initiative developed by the Market Research Society, to promote the profile of research. It aims to challenge perceptions of research, expanding on what is great about the industry, the variety, innovation and impact on strategy. You will hear from the team at the Market Research Society and the Association for Qualitative Research who are enthusiastic research practitioners passionate about raising the profile of research and how it underpins practically every business decision ever made. Interview skills Tuesday 20th November 2018, 13:00 – 14:00 Learn how to stand out at interviews and have an impact on interviewers. Get tips on how to prepare in advance and how to answer competency, strengths-based and tricky interview questions. The session will help you to present yourself with confidence and minimise your anxiety about going to interviews for internships, placements, graduate jobs and graduate schemes. ALL


Employability Skills Programme The Employability Skills Programme, sponsored by KPMG, will prepare you to make the transition from education to work, exploring all aspects of the selection and recruitment process. These sessions will cover the skills that are most valued by recruiters, how you can reflect on these and how to articulate your experiences clearly when talking to employers. Sessions in 2018 will take place on Tuesday afternoons from 13:00 to 14:00 and Tuesday evenings from 18:00 to 19:00.

Sandwich year information event for all Year one students Wednesday 27th March 2019, 14:00 - 16:00 This session, for year one students, will be about learning what a sandwich year is and its possible routes: Study Abroad Exchanges Programme and the Integrated Professional Programme. We will also discuss the benefits of doing a sandwich year, when to apply and how it will enhance your graduate career prospects. ALL

Industry Insights The Industry Insight Programme, sponsored by FDM Group, allows you to explore a range of industries and sectors, either related to your degree or in another area of interest to you. A series of full-day or half-day events will take place on company premises, giving you a deep insight into a specific company and an understanding of your chosen sector.
