A guide for international students

London is one of the world’s most exciting cities. City, University of London’s central yet quiet location means our students benefit from all that the city has to offer. Named the best city worldwide in which to study by QS Best Student Cities 2018, London is described as “a nerve-centre of global academia”. But it’s not just all work and no play. However you like to spend your free time, life at City offers a huge range of opportunities for international students.

Diverse London London is enormously diverse, with over 2.8 million foreign-born inhabitants from 270 countries speaking over 300 languages. That’s around a third of the total population, more than any other world metropolis. At City we celebrate diversity where all people, cultures, ideas and beliefs are valued. This vibrancy of cultures provides students with never-ending opportunities for inspiration and new experiences.

Historical London London is a city of amazing experiences old and new. From ancient history and Shakespeare through to modern science and the London Eye, there is something for everyone. London’s history stretches back thousands of years and is part of the fabric of our university. London is also home to four UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Tower of London, which dates back to the reign of William the Conqueror.

Cultural London London is a city of discovery that surprises at every turn. So whether you are fascinated by art, theatre, music, design or dance, you will find yourself at the heart of the action. The University’s central location means that leading galleries, the theatre district in the West End and the music hubs of Camden and Shoreditch are all within easy reach.

Green London London has over 3,000 parks and open spaces, making it one of the greenest capitals in the world. Try the outdoor sports areas and open air theatre at Regent’s Park, row a boat on the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park, or enjoy one of the best views of London from Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath – it’s easy to leave behind the hustle and bustle and enjoy a picnic or afternoon of studying in the fresh air.

Opportunity London London is a place where everyone can pursue their dreams. London’s open, dynamic and free-thinking culture gives you the chance to be who you want to be. What’s more, our enviable central location is a major international hub for a wide range of industries – including finance, creative and media – providing access and opportunities for you to expand your professional networks.

Travel in London City is located in Islington with excellent transport links, with rail and underground stations close by and the option of walking to many of London’s attractions. London is also the gateway to the rest of the UK, Europe and the world, providing international students with opportunities to explore and discover further afield.

Free London London has a reputation for being an expensive city and yet no other city in the world can offer such a range of free activities. Many museums and galleries are free to enter and there are often free activities taking place in London at the weekend, from Notting Hill Carnival to Chinese New Year and Eid celebrations.

Jenen, LLB (Hons) from Canada “My favourite things about studying at City are the resources and opportunities that are available to students. City has numerous areas where students can study or just hang out. Furthermore, I like the fact that there are always lots of social events where students from different backgrounds and programmes can mingle together.”

Entry requirements Undergraduate Undergraduate entry requirements for students with UK qualifications are available on our website: www.city.ac.uk/courses. Applicants with international qualifications should visit www.city.ac.uk/international, where standard entry requirements for specific countries can be found. If you have further questions, our International Student Recruitment team will be able to help – just email us at international@city.ac.uk. Students from some countries will need to take a Foundation course to help them prepare for study at City, University of London. You can find details of the INTO City Foundation course elsewhere in this guide.

Postgraduate A UK second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) is generally the minimum requirement for entry. For some degrees, professional qualifications and employment experience may be required, but also may be considered alongside or instead of an undergraduate degree. Applicants who wish to find out whether their degree is from an institution recognised by the University should contact the International Student Recruitment team at international@city.ac.uk.

English language requirements If your first language is not English, you will be required to demonstrate that your English ability is sufficient to undertake degree-level study. If you require a visa for study in the UK you will also have to provide evidence of your English ability to UKVI. Even if you have been accepted onto your course it is important to check that you also have suitable English qualifications to obtain your visa. This may be through a recognised Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS examinations or (for postgraduate students) through evidence of completion of an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree from a majority English-speaking country (as defined by the UKVI). English language requirements vary by degree, so please check www.city.ac.uk/courses for up-to-date information. Applicants who do not meet the English language requirements for their course may enrol on one of our pre-sessional English language courses, delivered by INTO City, University of London. More information can be found further on in this guide. 14

The final deadline for non-EU applicants to apply is 30th June, to begin study the following September. Postgraduate Applications for postgraduate courses should be made directly to City, University of London. Applications can be made online through the relevant course page at www.city.ac.uk/courses. Early applications are recommended, as competition for places is strong and applications may close when the course is full. Deadlines for applications will differ by department. International pathway courses International pathway courses are for international students whose school qualifications are not accepted for direct entry into a UK university. They are designed to prepare students for either undergraduate or postgraduate study and in some cases, completion of these courses guarantees entry into university, subject to meeting grade requirements.

INTO City, University of London INTO City is a joint venture between City, University of London and INTO University Partnerships. Established in 2009, INTO City offers a range of pre-university courses that prepare international students for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at City, University of London and universities across the UK. The International Foundation Programme is designed for students who are not eligible for direct entry onto a postgraduate course at City and the Graduate Diploma programme is a pre-Masters programme designed for students who are not eligible for direct entry onto a master’s course. Both programmes include both academic preparation and ensure you meet the English language requirements for your chosen degree. Completion of these courses guarantees entry into City, subject to meeting grade requirements. INTO City courses are delivered at a purpose-built study centre near to the University and central London. As a student enrolling at INTO City, you will have full access to City, University of London’s facilities. Courses at INTO City are validated by the University, which provides assurance of the quality and standards of education.

Kaplan International College (KIC) London City also has a well-established partnership with Kaplan International College (KIC) London. KIC London, located at the very heart of the capital, offers an Undergraduate Foundation Certificate that prepares students for undergraduate study and a pre-Masters course that prepares students for postgraduate study. Progression to City is guaranteed if you complete the course at the required level. KIC London offers comprehensive support including regular one-to-one tuition and students have access to a number of City, University of London facilities.

Find out more www.kaplanpathways.com/universities/ city-university-of-london

Other pathway courses City recognises several other foundation and preMasters programmes but it is important to note that these programmes do not guarantee progression to undergraduate study at City. To find out whether your course is recognised by City for entry:

Pre-sessional English courses Pre-sessional English language courses are delivered though INTO City, University of London. They are intended to ensure that your English language ability is of the required level to cope with the demands of learning at City. The INTO City, University of London campus is based a short bus ride from the main City campus and provides high-quality teaching programmes, underpinned by excellent student support services. Pre-sessional courses are available as 4, 8 and 12-week programmes and run from late June to early September, depending on language level and degree programme offer requirements. To secure a place on the pre-sessional English course you must have a valid UKVI-approved

A guide for international students

Secure English Language Test (SELT) score recognised by the University and a conditional offer of a place at the University. The length of course you need to attend is dependent upon the SELT score you have already obtained and the degree programme for which you have an offer to study. Once you have booked a place on the appropriate pre-sessional course you will be deemed to have met the English language condition of your offer. The pre-sessional course has been specifically designed so that students meet the required level to progress to their University course. Towards the end of your pre-sessional course you will be formally assessed by INTO City and will be required to obtain the specified score in order to meet the entry requirements and progress to the degree programme for which you have a conditional offer. Students who have already obtained the required SELT for their University course may still wish to attend a pre-sessional course in order to further prepare them for study at the University and to assist their integration into the University environment.

Accommodation options Whether you want to base yourself in the University’s well-equipped halls of residence or stay privately in London, our Accommodation team are here to help.

20

A guide for international students

There is a range of choices available, from self-contained studio flats to options with shared kitchens and/or bathrooms. Most of our accommodation is a short walk from the main University campus. You can expect to pay between £140 and £276 per week (including bills and internet, but excluding food). For private accommodation, a room costs from £120 per week and you will also have to budget for bills and food, as well as additional travel costs if you live further away from the University.

Undergraduate City, University of London operates a Guarantee Scheme for first-year undergraduates. This Scheme could guarantee you a place in one of City’s affiliated Halls if you firmly accept via UCAS an unconditional or conditional offer on a full time course from City, University of London before the deadline. Undergraduate accommodation is split out across five areas, each of which is easily reached from the University: Liberty Court in the historic Smithfields area Liberty Hall in lively Islington East Central House near the world-famous Barbican Centre The Gardens Halls near the British Library

Postgraduate Postgraduate students can apply for rooms in dedicated postgraduate halls of residence and rooms are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the date of the housing application. City’s postgraduate residences are split across three areas, each of which is easily reached from the University: Alliance House in vibrant Newington Green Willen House in trendy Clerkenwell Pure City, just a seven-minute walk from the University.

Private accommodation There are many private providers of student accommodation in London, several of which are also located very close to the main University campus. You can find links to some of these providers on the University’s accommodation pages. Some students also rent flats or shared houses privately. It can be difficult to organise this from overseas and if you are looking at renting privately we would recommend organising some temporary accommodation for the first couple of weeks and using this time to organise your private rental when you are here in the UK.

Tufnell House located near leafy Tufnell Park.

Rebeca, MSc Human-Computer Interaction Design from Peru “I would recommend City because it helps you feel comfortable in a city where you don’t know many people. It’s really easy to make friends. Even in student housing (because I live in one of them, at Alliance) there are lots of activities that take place to bring people together, and the staff is really nice and welcoming as well.”

At the Careers Service you can discuss your plans at one-to-one appointments and discover our extensive careers resources, which include computer-aided guidance packages and aptitude testing systems.

Sumit, MA Creative Writing (Novels) from India “One of the first things I did at the beginning of my term at City was to register with Unitemps. It helped me find parttime work to fit around my studies. This was crucial for me, given the working-hour restrictions on a Tier 4 visa (maximum 20 hours per week). I found the experience really rewarding.”

School of Arts & Social Sciences Undergraduate students may have the opportunity to undertake a one-year work placement whilst completing a programme. This is possible through joining the Integrated Professional Training Programme. Participants would extend their degree to four years, gaining the work experience through a placement or internship during their 3rd year at City and returning to complete their degree in the 4th year. By completing this programme students are able to put their learning into practice in a work context and develop important industry contacts and networks, which may lead to future employment opportunities. This is particularly useful for international students wishing to gain work experience in the UK. Many courses also incorporate work placement modules into the programme of study, giving you the opportunity to build industry experience whilst on the course.

You can undertake a summer internship at the end of each academic year or opt to spend a year on an industry placement on completion of your 2nd year or at the end of your 3rd year (if you are on the MEng (Hons) route). As well as one-year placements and summer internships, BSc (Hons) Computer Science students also have the opportunity to join our unique Professional Pathway scheme, where you can gain two years of paid professional experience, combining employment with academic study, splitting your final year over a two-year period. Placements are paid and are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.

Learn more www.city.ac.uk/international Jasmine, BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science from Malaysia “Accepting a placement year at Mercer was the best decision I made during my degree. Not only did I learn about the industry and the working culture in the UK, I was also able to secure a graduate role in the company, as well as gaining inspiration for my Final Year Project and learning many soft skills that helped me throughout my final year at Cass. I was given the opportunity to move to Belfast, which is a very different experience to London, and learn its history and culture. It was also an opportunity to expand my network within the company and industry as a whole. I was fortunate to have done my placement year during a transformative time in the company. This allowed me to use cutting-edge technology and help shape its development.” A guide for international students
