Welcome from

Sponsors of the 2018 Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair Hello and welcome to the Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair 2018 from the EY Student Recruitment team. We are excited to be sponsoring the Fair today and getting to know some of you better. EY is a global professional services organisation with over 231,000 people in more than 150 countries. Our high performing teams of people operate across four service lines: assurance, consulting, tax and transactions. We work with many of the world’s largest businesses, helping them navigate ever-changing markets and technology so that they can be equipped with better solutions for tomorrow. At EY, we focus on you as an individual. We use a strengths-based approach to recruit students for all of our roles. Assessing potential rather than past performance is at the heart of our selection methodology and as a result, we no longer screen out candidates based on academics or degree subject. This means that we have many different roles available for you to explore, even whilst you are at university. Throughout the Fair today, make sure that you speak to as many employers as possible, getting to know the different opportunities they have on offer. Our biggest tip is to have some questions prepared before you approach the employer. Have a think about the different sectors you could work in and what you might be doing day to day at the company. We hope you enjoy the Fair today and remember to follow up with the people you meet. If you want some practice, come and say hello to our friendly employees on the EY stand, we don’t bite. All the best, The EY Student Recruitment Team

We are delighted to invite you to the 2018 Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair. This event is an ideal opportunity for you to network with key recruiters from these sectors and gather information that will help you stand out from other applicants. Please use the checklist below that the Careers Service has prepared for you in order to help you make the most of this event and get ahead of the competition.

Before the Fair • Registered for and attended the Fair preparation session or completed the Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair Prep Quiz to learn how to make the most of the Fair and get a fast-track entry pass? • Pre-registered online via careershub.city.ac.uk/students? • Done some research on the exhibitors that you want to approach on the day? Start with reading the profiles of the exhibitors in this guide. • Researched how employers prefer to be approached at Careers Fairs? • Prepared some relevant questions that demonstrate your interest in that area of work? • Prepared a couple of sentences to introduce yourself clearly and succinctly to organisations? See page 15 of this guide for further information on how to secure a fast-track entry pass. 2|3

On the day • Approach the stand as you would do an interview – first impressions count • Start conversations with expressions such as “I am interested in...” or “I know about your company and would like to find out more about...” • Be prepared to outline succinctly your knowledge of the company, express enthusiasm in what the company does and describe how your background could contribute to their needs • F ind out what exhibitors are looking for by asking them what skills and experience they require. You can then tailor your experiences and responses to what they are looking for • Have a notepad ready so you can note down the name of anyone who you really enjoyed talking to. If they inspired you to work for their organisation, mention this in your application form • Be proactive and keen: talk to the recruiters • Plan what you are going to wear to project a professional image on the day of the Fair. Present yourself as you would at an interview.

• Stand in a huddle in the corner talking to your friends • Monopolise a single person • Just browse or collect freebies • Dress too casually (jeans, trainers and baseball caps are not recommended).

Prepare to answer questions “Tell me about your course and why you decided to study it.” “What interests you about the creative industries/social sciences?” “Tell me a little bit about yourself.” Are you ready to sell yourself positively and succinctly in response to general openers like these? Start with your name, course and year of study. You may then want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest, why you are attending the Fair and why you have approached the employer in front of you. Write your notes on the following lines:

Prepare to ask questions Have a look through the pages that follow and identify employers that you would like to approach at the Fair. Think about questions that you would like to ask each of them and write them down in the notes sections under exhibitors’ profiles in this guide, ready for the day of the Fair. For example, prepare questions that will help you decide if a particular career or a particular organisation may be the one for you. You may wish to find out more about opportunities for professional qualifications, long-term careers prospects, work-life balance, job security, work environment, training and development opportunities, content of work, opportunities to work internationally and job availability. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Ensure you do not ask questions which can be easily answered by doing some very basic research.

My notes:

Our pioneering research delivers the breakthroughs which prevent, control and cure cancer. Our ground-breaking work into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer has helped to save millions of lives. In the 1970s, only a quarter of people survived cancer. Today half do. This is good progress, but it is not enough. Looking to the future, we do not just want to contribute to further progress, we want to accelerate it. We want to see three quarters of people beat cancer in the next 20 years. Our research to beat cancer is entirely funded by the public. Research saves lives and our work is critical to ensuring more people beat this devastating disease. We work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact in the global fight against cancer. We provide life-changing information to anyone affected by cancer. We run awareness initiatives so that cancer can be detected early and help people reduce their risk of the disease and our campaigning and lobbying keeps cancer at the top of the political agenda. Our graduate opportunities are truly unique. With a commercial strength equivalent to a FTSE350 company, we are Number 2 in the Guardian UK 300 and are one of the UK’s most widely-recognised brands. We reach and engage millions of supporters and are constantly evolving, adapting and implementing the best strategies and technologies to beat cancer sooner. Every step we take towards accomplishing this ambition relies on every hour and every person. We want you to be part of the journey that will bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. www.cancerresearchuk.org @CR_UK facebook.com/cancerresearchuk

My notes:

Start thinking about your career now In a competitive employment market it is essential to engage with employers early to stand out from your peers, gain experience and make an informed decision about your future. First year students: It is never too early to start thinking about your career – read on to find out why it is important to engage early.

“ First year is a great opportunity to have a go at everything from volunteering to sports to working part-time. There is nothing wrong with exploring your options and trying something new. Branch out and join ReachOut as a mentor and who knows which doors will open.” ReachOut “ It is only by establishing what a company does and the benefits it has to offer, can you decide if that company is the best fit for you. You may chat to a company that has never been on your radar, but discover the work they undertake is exciting and challenging.” Office for National Statistics “ Time passes so quickly that even though you may be in your first year, it is a great idea to explore the possible options that your degree delivers. The workplace is a very competitive place, therefore, if you can develop your ideas and careers path at an early stage you have an advantage over the competition. Also, your degree might benefit from placements or internships, which again is important to consider at an early stage. Employers like people who display the qualities of being prepared and well-informed rather than last minute.” Remedy Education “ Experience is key in such a competitive job market. Employers often want you to have experience way before you apply, so having that real world experience and seeing how a company works can separate you when furthering your career.” Twipes

Established in 1984, Pursuing Independent Paths (PIP) encourages and empowers young adults with learning disabilities (LDs) to achieve their full potential. PIP provides intensive, person-centred support to around 65 adults with moderate and severe LDs from two centres in Westminster and in the community. Through engaging, vibrant, creative and fun education, health and personal development activities we empower our students to acquire the skills, competencies and confidence they need to become more independent and live fulfilling lives. We want PIP students to participate in their communities as fully as they are able. Overcoming the fear of networking events “ Practise a few introductory lines at home before you attend the networking event. What are you interested in? What is your favourite module? How are you going to separate yourself from other candidates? Think about how you are going to introduce yourself to the employers and go for it.” EY “ Most of the staff who run the stand at the Fair, have at one time or another been in your shoes. All any business wants is to explain why you should choose them as the best place to come and work.” Office for National Statistics “ You can’t. You just have to go out there. Face your fears and introduce yourself. As an employer that is everything I look for in a candidate. Confidence is key, even if you have to fake it. Think about a topic you are relatively well versed in and go for it. Otherwise simply introduce yourself and allow the other person to tell you all about themselves.” Twipes “ Students should remember they are the reason why the employers are there. In many ways, the students have the power. This should instill confidence in them which will help allay any fears. If you know what employers are attending, you could even grasp the nettle and make an appointment in advance with them on the date of the event. This gives the student the upper hand and demonstrates that they should be taken seriously.” Remedy Education “ With networking events, remember that everyone is there for the same reason – to speak to everyone and anyone. Do not be afraid to go up to someone and say ‘Hi, I’m X and I study Y, what’s your name?” ReachOut

The £8 billion wet wipes market is rapidly growing, leading to wipes that claim to be flushable, but are not actually flushable at all. These wipes block sewers, cause fatbergs and wash up on beaches causing huge damage to the environment. Twipes solve this with the world’s first truly flushable wipes. They are antibacterial, like ordinary wipes, but whilst other wipes take a minimum of 100 days to break down in water, Twipes break down in just three short hours. www.twipes.co.uk @TwipesUK www.facebook.com/twipes instagram.com/TwipesUK
