We are delighted to present the School of Arts and Social Sciences Careers Events programme 2017/18. It has been designed to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, training schemes and graduate jobs within the Arts and Social Sciences sectors. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and alumni from the School of Arts and Social Sciences. This guide contains an overview of the central Arts and Social Sciences careers events at City, University of London in the autumn term and a snapshot of what is coming up in the spring term. The programme has been designed in collaboration with the School of Arts and Social Sciences for both undergraduate and postgraduate Arts and Social Sciences students as well as students from other disciplines who are interested in pursuing a career in these sectors. The majority of the events within this booklet will be advertised on City CareersHub. Meet your Careers Consultant All City students and recent graduates can book an appointment with one of our career consultants. They offer three main types of appointment to suit different requirements: careers consultant appointments for any careers issue, career guidance appointments and mock interview appointments. At busy times of the year, students will be seen by application advisers for advice about CVs, cover letters and application forms.

Estanis Bouza Careers Consultant +44 (0)20 7040 8091 careers@city.ac.uk Estanis has a BA in Advertising and Public Relations from Universidad Complutense in his home town of Madrid, Spain, and a PGDip in Careers Education, Information and Guidance from the University of Warwick. He held various jobs in publishing, marketing and sales in Madrid before re-locating to London in 2001. He then worked for John Lewis Plc in several positions. Estanis’s professional interests include facilitating group work, one-to-one guidance, ability tests and personality profiling, for which he holds a qualification accredited by the British Psychological Society. Estanis will be involved in the teaching of modules for Sociology and Journalism, and also facilitating workshops for arts courses. You can also meet Estanis in one-to-one appointments at the Careers Service.

Psychometric Testing Workshop Monday 16th October 2017, 12:00 – 16:00 Apptitude Digital Solutions will use new software and tablets to deliver a crash course in psychometric tests. Thursday 19th October 2017, 13:00 – 14:00 and Monday 23rd October 2017, 13:00 – 14:00 Employers spend less than a minute looking over a CV before deciding to take it to the next stage – or not. This session will teach you how to create a CV that has impact. It will cover language, content and layout. You will also learn how to write a convincing cover letter and how to avoid typical student pitfalls. The session is for anyone who is applying for an internship, placement, a first professional job, a part-time student role, volunteering opportunity or postgraduate course. ALL UG

Interview skills Monday 13th November 2017, 13:00 – 14:00 Learn how to stand out at interviews and have an impact on interviewers. Get tips on how to prepare in advance and how to answer competency, strengths-based and tricky interview questions. The session will help you to present yourself with confidence and minimise your anxiety about going to interviews for internships, placements, graduate jobs and graduate schemes. ALL UG

Employability Skills Programme Our employability skills programme is designed in collaboration with employers. The sessions prepare students to make the transition from education to work, covering all aspects of the selection process. They explore the skills that are most valued by employers, how students can reflect on these and how students can articulate their experiences clearly when talking to employers. Students that attend the preparatory session and eight of the sixteen main sessions will receive a certificate. The event follows from the successful series held in spring 2017 and enable alumni from specific sectors to meet and network with each other. This event also provides current students a unique opportunity to meet City alumni and develop their networking skills to succeed in the Education sector.

Please check Journalism department notice boards for more information nearer the time. A series Journalism Futures events will be indispensable for anyone considering a career in journalism. They provide the opportunity for students to meet and network with leading journalists across the industry and also benefit from their insight into how to bag a job. CVs, covering letters, interviews, work experience and speculative approaches will be covered in detail. The speakers will also explain what students can be doing now to make themselves employable. These events are aimed at Journalism students, but other students interested in a career in journalism are welcome to attend. There is no need to book for these events, students can just turn up.

These lunchtime events will be tailored to your degree programme where you will hear from, and get chance to speak to, graduates who studied your degree working in a variety of different jobs. There will be five separate events, each hosted by an academic from your degree programme: • Careers with a Culture & Creative Industries degree • Careers with a Criminology degree • Careers with a Food Policy degree • Careers with a Media & Communications degree • Careers with a Sociology degree (including Research Methods) Speakers will share their personal experiences of how they got to where they are today and how their degree helps them in their daily work.
