aradise Valley Community College Black Mountain campus will hold a grand opening ceremony for its newest expansion, Aquila Hall, January 29 at 10am. The newly constructed 20,000-square-foot facility includes classrooms, a computer lab, science labs, an astronomy viewing deck and telescopes, an amphitheater and a tutoring center.

“Aquila Hall allows us to expand our course offering to include biology, physics, chemistry, geology and astronomy as well as more business classes,” says Dr. Paul Dale, president, Paradise Valley Community College. “For instance, one of the classes we will be offering is a higher level biology that uses cadavers in the class, this will allow students pursuing degrees in the health care to get a jump start on classes that would typically be at the university. Students will now have the opportunity to complete an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Business degrees all at the Black Mountain campus. These degrees also transfer to the university allowing students to get high quality education at an affordable price.”

Experience music and culture of original residents at Native Trails, Jan. 9 – March 31 Native Trails is a free outdoor festival celebrating the Native American cultures of the Southwest through song and dance. Each event brings together traditional instruments, colorful dances and authentic attire to share the stories of Southwest tribes. Audiences enjoy performances such as the Southwest horse dance, inter-tribal pow-wow dancing, world-class hoop dancing and the participatory round dance. Native Trails also features American Indian artisans selling specialty items such as jewelry, baskets, flutes and paintings, as well as light snacks and beverages. Guests are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs or picnic baskets. This free series takes place from 12-1pm most Thursdays and Saturdays on the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall.

Forty-Fifth Anniversary Barrett-Jackson Auction Exceptional docket – exciting events & exhibits Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction will host a nine-day celebration of the company’s 45th anniversary in Scottsdale January 23-31 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. As the barometer of the collector car market in 2016, Barrett-Jackson is filling its docket with more than 1,500 rare and collectible vehicles.

1938 Coddington “The French Connection”

Renowned artists from across the globe will make the beautiful Sonoran Desert in North Scottsdale home for 10 weeks as they create original pieces of fine art in what has come to be known as one of Arizona’s best venues for collecting fine art. The Arizona Fine Art Expo begins Friday, January 22, and runs through Sunday, April 3.

The event features 120 patron-friendly working studios within a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action and learn about their inspiration and techniques. Throughout the 10 weeks, artisans will sketch passionately “Flight of the Dragon” by Janelle Lindley in pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; drill, chisel and carve stone; paint in all media; delicately scrape and etch on scratchboard, stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; solder and weld jewelry; assemble mosaics and more. Art is for sale and commissions are welcomed.

Patrons can stroll throughout one of the Valley’s largest sculpture gardens, which includes a Koi pond with waterfall surrounded by natural desert.

Other highlights include a café, wine tastings, garden parties, book signings, live music every weekend and more. In addition, the non-profit American Healing Arts Foundation will provide free art classes for veterans during the show.

Phoenix Open: The Peoples Major The 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open, known as “The Greatest and Greenest Show on Grass” and the “People’s Major,” will be held at TPC Scottsdale from February 1-7. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the best-attended golf tournament in the world and has gained legendary status for being the most unique stop on the PGA TOUR. The 2016 edition will mark the 81st playing of the event (one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR) and the seventh as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Entertainment off of the green is always a big part of the event and the 2016 Open is no exception. It’s that time of year again when the financial consultants in my branch encourage clients to review and update their financial plans. The 2004 University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study of Americans over 50 showed that those who created financial plans and stuck with them achieved an average total net worth three times higher than those who didn’t.

The 350/400 GT Series represented Ferruccio Lamborghini’s intention to construct the finest Grand Touring automobiles ever assembled. Many automotive journalists at the time hailed the cars as being better than equivalent exotic machinery. During its introductory year, only 13 examples of the 350 GT version were created. Around 120 examples were created in total and all were mostly hand-built. Of these rare cars, very few survivors remain in the same condition as this stunning automotive design tour de force – just one of the many fine automobiles offered this January at the Russo and Steele event.

From Israel To Munich To Arizona Meet 1972 Olympic Athlete Dan Alon Israeli championship fencer Dan Alon will speak about his experiences at the 1972 Munich Olympics at The Camelback Golf Club, 7847 North Mockingbird Lane, Scottsdale, Wednesday, January 27, at 7pm.

Alon’s fencing career began at age 12, continued through his teen years and reached its peak at age 27 when he joined the Israeli fencing team at the Olympic Games.

“The Olympics are a symbol of freedom and peace between nations,” says Alon.

He recalls marching into the Olympic stadium in Munich under the Israeli flag. “I was in heaven. It was the most beautiful day of my life.”

Alon’s world was shattered five days later on September 5 when Black September terrorists invaded the building where he and his 15 fellow athletes and coaches were living. Eleven were murdered; only five managed to escape.

In honest, often emotional terms, Alon shares with audiences his journey: the security concerns prior to the Games, the harrowing attack and the process of returning to normal life. Alon remains active in the as yet unsuccessful struggle to honor the memories of his slain teammates at the Olympics every four years. The event is a project of Chabad of Paradise Valley and JPhoenix Young Jewish Professionals.

Smithsonian Gets Into “Western Spirit”

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West was recently certified a Smithsonian Affiliate museum, making it a recognized partner with the world’s largest museum and research complex. It is one of the youngest organizations ever to become a Smithsonian Affiliate.

History, Art, and Culture for the Smithsonian Institution, presented the Certification of Affiliation at a private event held November 20 at the museum located at 3830 North Marshall Way in Downtown Scottsdale.

Becoming a Smithsonian Affiliate opens the door to a variety of benefits to Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. These include not only loans of iconic artifacts and cultural treasures, but also education programming, expert speakers and career development for museum professionals.

Kurin noted that, with approximately 137 million objects, works of art and specimens in the Smithsonian, affiliates such as Scottsdale’s Museum of the West are indispensable resources that help bring more of its educational and historical resources to people in communities throughout the country.

In addition to sharing artifacts from the Smithsonian’s vast collection, the Affiliate relationship will provide Scottsdale’s Museum of the West with opportunities to collaborate on innovative educational programming to help students understand the legacy of the West and their own role in shaping it.

SUSD Celebrates Newest National Board Certified Teachers National Board Certification is one of the highest achievements in the teaching profession. Recently, nine additional Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) teachers earned this credential by successfully completing the rigorous National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) process.

The newly certified teachers are Ashley Crose, Saguaro; Jennifer Fox, Hopi; Jennifer Bethke, Laguna; Kelly Vandenheuvel, Redfield; Kim Keck, Yavapai; Lori Jordan, Chaparral; Maureen Traynor, Tavan; Patti Hanlon, Copper Ridge; Sheila Fullerton, Kiva. They will be recognized at the February 9 Governing Board meeting.

“We are very proud of the accomplishments of our newly certified teachers,” says Dr. Karen Benson, executive director of Instructional Services.

“We now have 85 National Board Certified Teachers within the Scottsdale Unified School District.”

The SUSD Foundation annually provides financial assistance to teachers pursuing National Board Certification. Since 2011, the Foundation has awarded more than $33,000 to support National Board Certification.

Additionally, the Arizona K12 Center provides an array of resources and support to educators across the state including scholarships to teacher candidates.

2016 Devoured Culinary Classic: New Event Format & Initial Restaurants Announced Photos by Kathryn M. Miller

The Devoured Culinary Classic returns for its seventh year in February. Presented in partnership with Local First Arizona (www. localfirstaz.com), Devour Phoenix, Phoenix Art Museum (www.phxart.org) and the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (www.saaca.org), the Devoured week of events will run from February 28 – March 6. The weeklong celebration of food and drink returns with an all-star lineup of local chefs, culinarians, winemakers, brewmasters and mixologists.

The main event, the award-winning Devoured Culinary Classic, will be held on Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, at Phoenix Art Museum, and will feature a new format, new restaurants and chefs, an intimate VIP experience and more.

This year’s Devoured Culinary Classic will offer four distinct areas to explore for complete culinary immersion. In the Great Hall, attendees will sample first course dishes like salads and appetizers. In the Dorrance Sculpture Garden, guests will be able to taste entree-style plates and sample beers, wines and spirits from around the region. Attendees can satisfy their sweet tooth in the Hardes Theater Dessert Lounge, a new addition to this year’s event featuring local restaurants, bakeries, coffee roasters and confectioners. Inside Palette, guests can browse the Local Foods Marketplace to sample and purchase products from local food artisans.

The VIP area will feature Chef Vincent Guerithault of Vincent’s on Camelback and Chef Cullen Campbell of Crudo and Okra.

This time last year, Downtown Phoenix was gearing up to host the biggest, best Super Bowl yet. But many residents may not realize that we’re preparing to do something very similar this January when we host the College Football Playoff National Championship.

The Champ Game will transform downtown into a three-day party with food and drinks, music, games, media and more. We’re calling it the Championship Campus, and it’s going to be a one-of-a-kind experience for locals and fans in town for MAYOR City of Phoenix the game.

Fan Central will host pep rallies for each team featuring the band, mascots and cheerleaders. Each night features different acts guaranteed to get our city pumped for some great football. Friday night is country themed; Saturday night features great pop acts; and Sunday night will feature rock artists including headliner John Mellencamp to close out the weekend. During the day, local talent and DJs will take the stage. Sponsors and partners will run family-friendly activities, and ESPN will be on the lot filming live broadcasts of SportsCenter and other programs.

Turf Paradise Throws Sixtieth Birthday Party In 1956, Elvis Presley had his first hit with “Heartbreak Hotel,” Park Central opened as Arizona’s first mall and gas was 22 cents a gallon. When Turf Paradise opened its doors in 1956, the area surrounding 19th Avenue and Bell Road was dirt roads and desert.

Today, North Phoenix has literally grown up around the iconic track, which has operated continuously in the same location, and celebrates its 60th anniversary in January. It offers one of the longest racing seasons in the United States thanks to Arizona’s great weather. Through Off Track Betting networks, its races are viewed at OTB locations all over the United States and worldwide.

“After 60 years in Arizona it’s safe to say we’re more than just a fad,” says Turf Paradise General Manager Vince

Francia. “As loyal fans and those new to horseracing continue to come to Turf Paradise, we expect to be around for at least another 60 years.”

On January 16, Turf’s fans will gather at the track to commemorate six decades in Arizona. Grandstand admission is just $2. The festivities will include free umbrellas while supplies last, a kids fun park, $3 bottled beer and, of course, free birthday cake.

The gates open at 11am and the first post time is 12:40pm. A full card of live horse racing includes the $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile, named after the late Phoenix Suns coach who was a horseracing fan and a regular at the track.

The University of Arizona (UA), in partnership with COX Communications, presents Connect2STEM 2016 – a family-friendly event celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Math – and Medicine.

STEM enthusiasts have the opportunity to interact with more than 100 tables of hands-on science activities. Last year, the event drew more than 2,000 children and families. The UA’s second annual Connect2STEM event is free and will take place from 10am-3pm Saturday, January 9, at the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix located in Downtown Phoenix at 550 East Van Buren Street. The event takes place just blocks away from the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship football festivities including: Playoff Fan Central and AT&T Playoff Playlist Live.

Explore The Treasures Of Master Violin Makers This month, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix celebrates the violin. The internationally beloved instrument will be the star of a new exhibition that showcases 10 exceptional historic and modern examples from the string family, including a 1728 Stradivarius violin on public display for the first time in the United States.

Opening January 16, “Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” introduces the story of how early violin makers from the modest Italian city of Cremona shaped global music from the 16th century onward. MIM will explore how the workshops of the Amati, Guarneri and Stradivari families produced and perfected the look and sound of instruments in the string family. The exhibition will show why their legacy continues to inspire instrument makers and audiences today. Guests will hear and see the instruments on display through audio and video technology and will experience the violin as never before.

This one-of-a-kind exhibition will feature five historic instruments made from the 16th to the early 19th century by the so-called masters of Cremonese violin making. Additionally, five award-winning modern instruments from European and American makers represent the ongoing legacy of the Cremonese violinmaking method. In addition to instruments, the exhibition will feature a selection of tools and designs from the workshop of Antonio Stradivari. These precious artifacts are rarely on display outside of Cremona.

“Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” is a collaboration between MIM and two Cremona-based institutions, the Museo del Violino and the Friends of Stradivari.

“Happy Neuter Year” Campaign Altered Tails wants residents to ring in the New Year by making a resolution to neuter their male dog or cat during its “Happy Neuter Year” campaign.

Sponsored by PetSmart Charities, the “Happy Neuter Year,” campaign will provide 750 $20 neutering surgeries for male dogs and cats during the month of January.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population and is safe for puppies and kittens as young as 12 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Neutering male pets is a simple surgery that reduces unwanted behaviors, like roaming, fighting and urine marking territories,” says Altered Tails Executive Director Ellen Clark. “It also guarantees your dog or cat never fathers an unwanted litter.”

This special $20 rate is even less than the organization’s normal low-cost price and is available to anyone who owns their male dog or cat. Pet parents who wish to take advantage of this offer must mention the “Happy Neuter Year” campaign when they schedule their appointment. This campaign is based on availability.

Workshop Offered Deer Valley University is a series of workshops for parents, community members and staff in the Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD). The program is intended to provide participants with a basic understanding of how the DVUSD works. This year, the DVUSD Governing Board has prioritized three aspects of the district as areas of focus for Deer Valley University: Governance, Finance and Curriculum and Standards. Inaugural Sculpture & Wine Festival Honors Charitable Tradition Thunderbird Artists will host its inaugural Sculpture & Wine Festival January 15-17 in Fountain Hills. The juried show will feature more than 60 acclaimed sculptors from around the globe, giving patrons a chance to view and purchase stunning, diverse pieces comprised of bronze, stone, copper, clay, wood, metal, glass, gourd, steel, found objects and mixed media. “Thunderbird Artists has always been ambassadors for the arts and community, and ICAN’s mission is one we support,” says Judi Combs, Thunderbird Artists’ CEO and a cancer survivor.

Fountain Hills Theater will present La Cage Aux Folles January 22 – February 7.

Before there was the popular movie The Birdcage, there was the Tony award-winning, smash hit Broadway musical, La Cage Aux Folles. After 20 years of bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-orworse, get a bit of both when Georges’ son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of an ultra-conservative politician.

Further complicating the situation, Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the star performer “Zaza.”

When nighttime temperatures drop and days cool down, many of the community’s homeless end up on the streets without blankets, clothing and other necessities to keep them warm.

The City of Phoenix is asking for donations to help. Blankets, new or used (but clean and freshly laundered), are the highest priority. Clean warm clothing, such as long-sleeve jackets and long pants, sweatshirts and sweatpants, warm hats and gloves, coats, new underwear and socks, shoes and hygiene items also are accepted.

The items above also are needed in children’s sizes for families. Additional needs are baby food/ formula, diapers and children’s blankets. These are the only items the city will accept. The items will be collected through March.

The program is coordinated by the city’s Human Services Department. Donated items, which are tax deductible, may be delivered to any of the city’s three Family Services Centers between 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday: Travis L. Williams, 4732 South Central Avenue; John F. Long, 3454 North 51st Avenue; and Sunnyslope, 914 West Hatcher Road.

The donations will be distributed by local outreach teams from Basic Mission, Catholic Charities, Church on the Street, Community Bridges PATH Outreach, Healthcare for the Homeless, Native American Connections Inc., Set Free Ministry, TERROS, The Salvation Army/ Project HOPE, Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development and U.S. Vets.

Children and baby items will be distributed to families at the city’s emergency shelter facility.

Former NBA All-Star, Olympian, World Team member and Phoenix Sun, Dan Majerle, invited David to play with the Grand Canyon University’s (GCU) Division 1 basketball team. David, a 13-year-old boy who loves basketball, joined the team on the court to shoot with the players. He also received some pointers on his free throw shooting skills from Thunder Dan himself. GCU offered David a care package of shirts, a beanie, sunglasses, a plastic tumbler and tickets to a game.

It’s no surprise that David was overjoyed with the afternoon’s events and was thankful for the experience. During his interview, David expressed how nervous he was at first to shoot with such great players and the legendary Coach Majerle; but that didn’t stop him from going for it and playing his heart out. Both his courage and determination David is a fun-loving boy who showed up on the court that day. plays guitar.

Some other activities David enjoys include playing guitar, singing and drawing cars and action characters. “I was in an art exhibit and sold one of my pictures.

When I sold my picture I was so happy,” he says.

Guitar is one of David’s favorite pastimes and he is fortunate to be able to take classes to learn it at school. “I’m getting a little better each time I play. I have an A in guitar and I love it. I like to stay after class sometimes to work on the song I wrote and then grade my song before I leave.

My teacher encourages me. I like to sing too.”

Another subject David excels at is math. “Math is my favorite thing to do because it’s pretty easy for me. I’m good at it.” David would like to use his math skills in the future when he manages a sporting goods store. He said this would be a good profession for him because he likes to help people.

David interacts well with adults. He would be a blessing to an adoptive family and offer them love, laughter, help and respect. He wants a mom and dad and maybe some siblings.

“I would like my parents to love me, care for me, protect me and just be there for me.”

An ideal forever family will help David continue to grow – body, mind and soul. They will help keep him active by playing sports with him and they will foster his love for guitar and drawing.

Experience Authentic Native American Culture And Artistry Magic Bird Festivals will host the Fifth Annual Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival this month in Downtown Carefree. Native cultures unite at this festival where 100 highly acclaimed artists will display traditional and contemporary creations celebrating Native American artisanship and intercultural understanding.

More than 10,000 visitors are expected to attend.

Many of the invited artists are recognized under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 that validates exhibitor authenticity. Culturally informative for both families and collectors, visitors will view exquisite sculptures, paintings, and handmade Native American musical instruments available for purchase. Known for the spectacular display of intricate beadwork and handcrafted jewelry, the Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival show cases an array of artistic mediums.

Dance and music performances will take place throughout the weekend, including traditional Native American hoop dancing by world champions Brian Hammill of Native Spirit Productions and Moontee Sinquah, who specializes in Hopi songs and dances. Spectators can view the live entertainment and colorfully adorned costumes in the open air Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion.

MindQuest Series Discusses Lindbergh

The January 19 meeting of the MindQuest Speakers Series at the Foothills Community Foundation is about Charles Lindbergh. In 1929, he used his biplane for a honeymoon trip combined with a work project crossing the country into the southwest. During the flight, he literally came upon some archaeologists and ended up doing survey work from the air with them. It was the first use of aviation in archaeology, which included the sites and geologic features around Chaco Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly and elements throughout the general four corners area.

Presented by Erik Berg, an award-winning historian and special interest writer of the early 20th century Southwest, the talk includes some of Lindbergh’s historic photographs and describes this pioneering collaboration of aviation and archaeology, as well as some insight into Lindbergh and his family life. The Lindbergh’s Arizona adventure ties prehistoric and Stone Age relics to the history of aviation leading to the Space Age evolving later in the century.

Berg’s insight into the Lindbergh’s personal life enhances the overall perspective of his presentation.

The Jubilate Music Program for children will offer spring semester violin, percussion, choir and drama classes. The 17-week courses run from January 18 – May 2. Classes take place at the Christ Anglican Church, 35500 North Cave Creek Road in Carefree.

Spring curriculum includes ear training, music theory, sight singing, harmonization and the technical mastery of voice or instrument. Choral classes combine both secular and sacred works. Class sizes are limited and tailored by age group, providing a more focused educational experience. A student recital will be presented at the close of the semester.

Guests won’t need a secret knock to enter The Speakeasy On Easy Street Thursday, February 11, only plans for fun, lively music for dancing, silent auction and lots of surprises. Desert Foothills Woman’s Club invites residents to don fancy frocks, furs, diamonds and high heels – play Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth or Ava Gardner. The band is warming up to provide an evening guests won’t forget, while raising funds for scholarships and local community nonprofits. The event, Hooray For Old Hollywood, runs 5:30-9pm and will feature music and dancing, food, silent auction and a cash raffle. Beverages will be available for purchase.

Cellar 13 Returns As Bodega 13 Cellar 13 re-opened November 2 as Bodega 13 with a new look and an international tapas menu.

Co-owner Mike Hightower explains, “I was approached by a close friend who liked the community feel of my wine bar concept but wanted to introduce shared plates or tapas as a way to create a fun, casual place to spend time with friends and neighbors in Carefree.”

The new look for Bodega 13 includes an upstairs kitchen, a chef’s table in the kitchen, a remodeled dining room and an expanded patio. The chef’s table is available by reservation only and features a multi-course culinary experience prepared directly by Chef Karsten Hartig.

Fairy Tale Ballet To Be Presented Plumb Performing Arts Center will present The Fairy Tale of Snow White & Rose Red Saturday, February 6, at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center.

A New Year’s Resolution About Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are as traditional as noisemakers and kisses at a New Year’s Eve party, and they should be fun to make and fun to achieve. Statistic Brain Research estimates that 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, nearly 144 million. That’s a lot of goal setting.

I’ve decided to join the resolution-making crowd again this year, despite evidence from research, claiming that only eight percent of us are successful in achieving our resolutions.

I have a suggestion that might improve our results. Let’s make two kinds of resolutions. On New Year’s Eve, we can make a few fun resolutions while celebrating, like resolving to always put the toilet seat down in 2016, or controlling my emotions when watching the Arizona Cardinals. Then on New Year’s Day we can list a few that are more serious like, getting organized, losing weight or spending less and saving more.

This year I will increase my chances of accomplishing my resolutions by making sure I really want to do them, putting them in writing and keeping track of my progress. That is my first 2016 resolution – a resolution about resolutions.

Since its opening in October 2015 in North Scottsdale, the team at The Bourbon Cellar restaurant has worked hard to bring guests a finedining experience at a casual dining price. The locally-owned establishment aims to be more than just a date-night destination, but rather a place where locals can drop in on any given weeknight or Saturday for an excellent meal or a bourbon with the guys (or gals), in a beautiful atmosphere.

“My wife (Jeannine) and I live up here, in Cave Creek,” says chef and owner Doug Smith. “We both

have experience in the restaurant industry, and we are building a nice family-oriented family establishment here where we know you by name.”

While the ambiance is important to Smith, his focus is firmly on the quality of food he serves.

And although they have made some recent menu changes – no longer offering items à la carte, but rather an entrée with a choice of two sides – serving the best quality meal to his customers remains the priority for the 20-year kitchen veteran.

“That was a big key feature for me. I am very passionate about my food, my sauces and how I prepare the dishes. This has been 20 years of trial and error, and this has been 10 years in the working for this restaurant,” says Smith. “I fly fish in fresh every single day from Prince Edward Island, Maryland and Maine, and I bring in the best of the best, hand-cut, hand-selected USDA prime meat.”

Each of the chef’s dishes comes with its own unique bourbon sauce, a reflection of the restaurant’s name. But if a full meal is not on tap for the evening, Smith invites residents to stop in and enjoy their evergrowing happy hour, Monday-Friday from 3-6pm.

“We carry about 200 labels of the finest bourbon America makes. Hence the name, The Bourbon Cellar,” says Smith. “But we also have a great, sophisticated wine list, we have hand-crafted cocktails and I carry a lot of locallyhandcrafted brewed beers – from Sedona to San Tan to Four Peaks.”

Since it’s opening, some have compared the restaurant to a number of high-end seafood/ steakhouse restaurants, but Smith is having none of it, saying that his personal touch, offering a mix of fine dining and casual flair, sets them apart from the corporate restaurants, “I’m The Bourbon Cellar, and this is what we do.”

New Kiwanis Marketplace Manager After announcing that Karen Mackiewich had resigned as its Marketplace general manager, the Kiwanis of Carefree has named a new manager, Craig Lemke.

The Kiwanis personnel committee says of Mackiewich, “We are sorry to see her move on to her new position. She will be missed.”

But the committee feels fortunate to have found a candidate with Lemke’s applicable experience so quickly.

Lemke has worked as a manager at Winnebago, Kraft Foods and more recently at Goodwill stores, where he was the district manager of 12 stores. In this position Craig opened seven stores in four years.

Lemke joined the Marketplace team December 15. He and his wife live in North Phoenix.

With the ashes and blackened remains of the Buffalo Chip in the background, the preacher continued forth with his sermon, a mere four days after the iconic downtown watering hole went up in flames on Thanksgiving morning. The loss, felt by all those in attendance that Sunday morning, was all too fresh to process; the impact still too raw.

The Town had lost a structure that, in addition to MAYOR Town of Cave Creek being a dance hall favorite and a Packer rooting hall, was also the repository for decades of personal memories.

The community responded immediately, which comes as no surprise.

Citizens, other business owners and the Town Council stepped up, offering immediate financial assistance to Wendt’s now out-of-a-job 120 employees, to numerous fundraisers and to an expedited processing of rebuilding plans, all aimed at getting The Chip up and running as soon as possible.

For the moment, we’re still re-living the images of angry orange flames and of smoke so black and thick it blocked out the sun’s light. But even with the unbearable loss there was hope. For amid the charred ruins there could be clearly seen a Buffalo Chip sign, bent and fire-seared, but proclaiming for all to hear and to take comfort in: “The Chip will arise anew.”

Of course, the sooner the better. For people need a place to make new memories. It would be a great way to start the New Year.

Get a healthy New Year off to a good start with a Friday Fitness Walk.

These brisk, non-interpretive walks are held every Friday at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, 44000 North Spur Cross Road in Cave Creek.

The series begins with a two-mile walk and get progressively more difficult each week. Participants need not be tri-athletes, just ordinary folks who would like to add diversity to their existing walking program. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. The walks begin at 9am; end times vary depending on the distance.

After the tragic Thanksgiving Day fire that burned down The Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse, an iconic landmark in Cave Creek for more than six decades, town businesses, residents and patrons have rallied to support the popular restaurant’s owners and their more than 100 employees.

Archaeology Society Monthly Meeting The Desert Foothills Chapter of the Arizona Archaeology Society based in Cave Creek meets on the second Wednesday of each month and features well known guest lecturers during these meetings. On January 13, the Society will present A Synthetic Review of Hohokam Archaeology, AD 1694-Present.

The Hohokam, like most prehistoric Native Americans, seemed to disappear for no reason from a farming rich environment in the Valley that flourished for decades with their advanced irrigation techniques. The talk covers a larger overview of the prehistoric peoples through historic times and hopes to answer the question. “Whence the Hohokam?”

The presenter, Dr. David Wilcox, is an outstanding southwest archaeologist with many publications and awards. He received his doctorate from University of Arizona and more recently was with the Museum of Northern Arizona for a couple of decades before his retirement. He is still a recognized researcher at the U of A. He doctoral work was at the great house known as Casa Grande, south of Phoenix not far from the Gila River.

The general public may attend an Arizona Archaeology Society – Desert Foothills Chapter meeting at no charge. There are refreshments available at 7pm and the meeting begins at 7:30pm, usually ending prior to 9pm. The meetings are held in the community building (Maitland Hall) at The Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, 6502 East Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek.

Hope 4 Kids focuses on the many children in Africa who are without one or both parents, and who are without hope to get out of the poverty and desperation of life there.

The trip included many service days to more remote villages, where safe water has been a basic need for the lives of many villagers, and the child death rates are higher than 50 percent. In these areas, Hope 4 Kids has drilled more than 350 wells and given the villages safe water for generations to come. Hope 4 Kids also sponsors schools, programs to give children healthy meals and medical assistance, among many other things.

After months of buzz in both the dining world and the film industry, the film about Phoenix’s most iconic restaurant, Durant’s Never Closes, is set for release on January 21, at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel. The red carpet premiere will be hosted in partnership with Scottsdalebased real estate developer Deco Communities and Edison Midtown, now under construction just steps from the original Durant’s, in association with Get Your PHX and Local First Arizona. The film will begin a theatrical run at Harkins Shea 14 January 22, before playing in select cities around the U.S. Starring Hollywood actors Tom Sizemore and Peter Bogdanovich, this film tells the story of legendary Jack Durant, a restaurateur, ladies’ man and mysterious gentleman who maintained many connections to the mafia. From the backwoods of Tennessee, to the world of Vegas at the time of Bugsy and finally as the owner of his famous steakhouse, Durant is a legend and dynamic character, at once charming, powerful and dangerous.

This film, based on the play by Terry Earp and the book by Mabel Leo, tells his story during one day at his restaurant.

Durant’s Never Closes was filmed entirely in Arizona by local independent filmmakers. Director and producer Travis Mills began Running Wild Films in 2010 with the vision to build a sustainable film movement in Phoenix and to focus on making films about the city and state’s history. For students who took the PSAT test in October, the College Board will not send the paper reports to schools until January. The College Board should have emailed students a pass code in December and you can go online for the results. As you know, the PSAT this year was based on the revised SAT format.

The new test will no longer have vocabulary in Reading, no traditional grammar in Writing and no longer a “penalty for guessing.” The scoring is now based on the more traditional SAT 1600 scale (for the SAT), however the PSAT scores will be between 320 and 1520. The PSAT scoring is much more complex and confusing than previous years. If you would like some help in deciphering these score reports, call Ellie or Tom at VogelPrep for a free consultation.

The first SAT under this new format will be given on March 5. Because this is the first sitting under the revised format, the College Board needs more time to calibrate the scoring. So, March scores will not be released until late May or possibly early June.

For current juniors, this adds a great deal of uncertainty and makes a focus on the SAT a risky proposition this year. SUSD Teacher Named 2016 Arizona Teacher of the Year Christine Marsh, an Advanced Placement (AP) English teacher at Chaparral High School was named 2016 Arizona Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF). Marsh is in her 24th year of teaching and believes it is important for students to feel valued both inside and outside the classroom.

“I believe that outstanding teaching is more a factor of a teacher’s relationships with students than his or her knowledge of a subject matter,” stated Marsh. “The more the students know a teacher cares, the more effort they will put into the class.”

In addition to teaching 11th and 12th grade students at Chaparral, Marsh mentors new teachers, writes curriculum, and is a strong advocate for education.

Marsh received the recognition at the annual Teacher of the Year Awards Luncheon held at the Arizona Biltmore. It was the 33rd consecutive year that the award was presented. More than 600 attendees including business leaders, Arizona educators, and elected officials attended the event. Over the next year, she will have the opportunity to advocate for students and the education profession at government, education, and other professional meetings throughout Arizona.

Additionally, as the AEF Arizona Teacher of the Year, Marsh will have the opportunity to compete for National Teacher of the Year, meet President Barack Obama and attend international space camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Etiquette Classes For Children Certified etiquette instructor, SueAnn Brown, owner of It’s All About Etiquette will offer a fun-filled, four-week etiquette course for children ages nine to 12.

Children will learn social etiquette, self-confidence and integrity with an

table skills and dining manners, grooming and posture and more. On the final day of class there will be a special graduation ceremony.

A recent survey by AARP in Arizona finds 54 percent of residents 45 and over are currently, or have recently provided care to an older adult. The survey, released as part of November National Caregivers Month recognizes the important role that caregivers play in helping relatives or close friends with chronic, disabling or serious health problems to remain living at home for as long as possible.

The survey found that at least eight in 10 caregivers perform many daily activities for loved ones that include driving them to appointments, shopping for them, helping with chores and meals, overseeing medications and managing finances. In many instances, family caregivers are also taking care of younger family members or children under the age of 18 that are living with them.

“Caregiving duties run the full gambit,” says Dana Marie Kennedy, AARP Arizona State Director.

“Sometimes it can simply mean providing companionship or social engagement to keep their family member or friend feeling engaged and connected to society.”

Currently, there are more than 804,000 family caregivers in Arizona helping an older loved one carry out daily activities, providing an estimated 818 million hours of care.

“It’s easy to add up the numbers but it’s harder to see the emotional effect that caregiving has on caregivers,” says Kennedy. “Nearly two in three admit to feeling stressed due to their caregiving responsibilities and over half find it hard to get enough rest, or they have challenges balancing work and family.”

“Clown Town” Event To Promote Preventive Healthcare

Well known doctors, international humanitarian clowns and friends of Carl Hammerschlag, M.D. of Paradise Valley and Patch Adams, M.D. (made famous by the Robin Williams portrayal), are teaming up to host the inaugural Clown Town Healing Fest Saturday, February 27, at the Arizona Center in Downtown Phoenix.

Adams and Hammerschlag aim to change the way that healthcare is viewed in Arizona, by helping shift people’s focus from the traditional intervention model of medicine that takes place after someone gets sick to a mindset of prevention and community healing before illness occurs.

Hammerschlag has been practicing medicine for more than 50 years. The 76-year-old is the son of Jewish parents who fled Nazi Germany just three years before he was born. He has lived in Phoenix since 1970 and has been friends with Patch Adams for 25 years.

The pair have traveled around the world healing through clowning, and are bringing the same philosophy to Phoenix for the first time during the Clown Town Healing Fest.

The free, family-friendly event runs from 10am-4pm. Attendees are invited to join in a lively Clown Walk that starts at 9:15am at the Central Bus Station, on the northeast corner of Central Avenue and Van Buren Street, and ends at the Arizona Center at 10am. Other activities include lectures, workshops and exhibitors, live music, performances, art, games and health and fitness demonstrations.

Twentieth annual Buses by the Bridge Those who are heading to Lake Havasu for the Havasu Balloon Festival & Fair, may want to bring their VW to the event – or just go check out others’ at the annual Buses by the Bridge XX, held at Lake Havasu State Park.

What started as a split-window campout has turned into a Volkswagen extravaganza with VW buses coming from all over the country for a giant campout at Lake Havasu State Park. For the adults, there are hot air balloon rides and a chili cook-off. The grand finale at this ode to the classics is a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. The 6th Annual Havasu Balloon Festival & Fair takes place January 15-17 at the Lake Havasu City Nautical Beachfront Resort. Enjoy hot air balloon “Mass Ascension,” balloon night glow, sky divers, arts and crafts, antique and classic cars, carnival rides, dog shows, kids’ events, kite displays, balloon rides (tethered and untethered), live musical entertainment, food vendors, beer garden and more.

The 2015 event drew 24,000 attendees and proudly flew 78 balloons, with one very special guest, Lord Mayor all the way from London, England. For 2016, expect more “sky candy” soaring over Lake Havasu City and in and around the Channel and the London Bridge again. Watch as the giant balloons lightly touch the water and quickly ascend (coined a “splash and dash”).

Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) is an outdoor skills clinic for women, presented by the Arizona Wildlife Federation. The objective of the program is to provide women with an opportunity to learn basic outdoor skills in a fun, non-threatening environment. The January 2016 BOW will take place at Saguaro Lake Ranch, and offers adventure and life skills, for women age 18 and older to learn to camp, fish, rappel, hike, cook with Dutch ovens, photograph wildlife and a range of outdoor recreation skills.

While you’re “editing” your 2016 list of resolutions, let me add a few small things you can do on a regular basis that will enhance your most precious sense, your vision.

Our eyes are coated by a very complex protective layer of tears. Each time we blink, we recoat our eyes with new tears that help to maintain the quality of our vision. When this layer of tears is disrupted, we can experience symptoms such as: irritation, burning, stinging, heaviness, fatigue, blur, itchiness, and foreign body sensation.

Farewell, Dear Friends After more than 30 wonderful years as a writer, I have decided to retire at the end of this year.

I know what you’re thinking, “He’s MUCH too young to retire.” Okay, so maybe you are not thinking that, but it’s my final column, so would it kill you to work with me here? Thank you.

All kidding aside, when I began writing columns and publishing my weekly newsletter back in the primordial era of computing, virtually everybody used Windows 3.1. We were a simpler people back then. Technology, as we all know, moves ahead at an unrelenting pace, with us or without us. And yes, it is exhausting just trying to keep up.

Today I receive questions from readers using Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 – and heaven help us, the next version of Windows is already in the works. Add to that Apple, Android and Microsoft smartphones, tablets of all species, plus Kindle, Kobo, Slick, Nook and other eReaders – it’s enough to make one’s head explode. The reality is that my one remaining neuron is no longer willing or capable of retaining all that information. (I can, however, still remember some of the 1960s, for which I am very grateful.)

Where Does T’’U Come From?

We made it! We’ve successfully blasted through Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and are pushing toward the next set of holidays: Fiesta Bowl, Cactus Bowl, the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday and T”u Bishvat.

You know about the first six festivals; maybe you celebrated a couple. But what about the funny-looking one, T”u Bishvat (pronounced: too bish-vaht)?

T”u Bishvat is Chag ha-ilanot, the New Year of the trees.

(You’ll recall Rosh Hashanah in the Fall, is the New Year for people.) In celebration of this special day, 16th century Kabbalists began the tradition of singing and dancing, while tasting fruits, nuts and wines.
