We host a series of events and activities throughout the year to give you a taste of what life is like at Sunderland College.

You can speak to our expert teaching staff, meet fellow students, and explore our amazing facilities. Our friendly team will be on hand to help with everything from careers guidance to advice on financial support available. There is no better way to explore everything we have to offer.

Open Events

Held throughout the academic year

Our Open Events are the perfect opportunity for year 10 and year 11 pupils to visit our campuses, find out more about our courses, see our outstanding facilities, meet our expert teaching staff and current students, and get a feel for the college atmosphere.

During the events, which are usually held on an evening or weekends, our Information, Advice and Guidance teams are also available to answer any questions you may have about finance, welfare or learning support.

Applicant Events

January to June

Once you’ve applied, we have events you will be invited to as part of your application journey.

These events are tailored to school leavers who have applied for one of our courses starting in September. Our applicant events include interactive sessions to give you a flavour of your chosen course, allow you to get to know our teaching staff, meet your classmates and current students as well as experience what it’s like to be a college student.

Parents/carers will be invited to specific sessions within some of these events which is a great opportunity to ask any questions.

More independence

At Sunderland College you can start making your own decisions. Your timetable will be very different to school with free periods for study, extra-curricular activities such as sports and games, on campus clubs and activities, or a part-time job.

There is no uniform at our college, meaning you can express your individuality through your clothing, although specific attire, like chef whites or PPE, may be required for certain courses. Please remember to always wear your college ID badge.

Bede Campus

Our largest college campus, Bede is home to fantastic facilities including science labs, a Health Simulation Ward, digital hub, dedicated sixth form and our impressive Sports and Arts Academies.

We have created a world-class technical skills and award-winning Innovation Space which includes a vibrant business hub and Immersive Space – a fully integrated 360-degree VR environment which immerses students in the heart of dynamic workplaces, giving them real-world experience and preparing them for future careers.

Bede Campus also boasts industry-standard media, broadcast, TV and radio production studios, and an Animal Resource Centre.

City Campus

In the heart of Sunderland is our City Campus. We have a range of industry standard equipment from engineering to professional cookery and hospitality.

We even have a hair, barbering and beauty salon and a critically acclaimed restaurant, City Bistro.

Our engineering, manufacturing and automotive facilities at our City Campus offer some of the best training facilities in the region, including a 360-degree Immersive Suite, battery power training facility plus an automation and robotics hub with a hybrid automotive technical skills workshop.

Some of our latest developments include a business management suite and a boardroom space featuring interactive digital walls.

The Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA)

Our groundbreaking HICSA facility is home to the North East’s only Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC), our housing and construction courses and the 14-16 Gentoo Skills Academy. Giving local people the skills to

build, retrofit and create homes for the future, HICSA has expansive open plan workshops, a Building Information Modelling (BIM) Studio, modern classrooms, and a Campus Café.

Our partnership with Northumbria University offers students a clear pathway into Higher Education and Higher Apprenticeships.

The Place

A cutting-edge, dynamic hub for students, innovators and esports enthusiasts, The Place is home to the British Esports Federation, the UK’s national esports body, and our esports courses.

Featuring modern classrooms, esports performance and training rooms, The Place is an entertainment and education venue like no other, nestled in the vibrant city of Sunderland.

Campus life

There are many opportunities for you to thrive, explore, develop, and learn at Sunderland College. Some days you may just want to enjoy campus life between your classes, meet your friends and relax in one of our cafés and outdoor areas, or take part in one of our activities and clubs.

Food & drink

Grab a bite to eat and catch up with your friends. We have several eating areas around our campuses offering a wide variety of healthy and nutritional meals, sandwiches, drinks and snacks. All our students have access to a free breakfast.

We operate an online payment system across our campuses to reduce the amount of cash our students carry and enhance the service provided within our catering outlets.

Each student has an account which can be topped up so you can purchase food and drinks at our Campus Cafés and eating areas. Although this is the preferred payment method, debit cards and cash are still accepted.

• Campus Café (Bede, HICSA & City campuses)

A large variety of delicious hot and cold food is available throughout the day in our Campus Cafés, offering regular meal deals and ‘theme days’ with many international dishes for you to try. Our Juice Bar at Bede also serves a range of healthy smoothies, shakes, sandwiches and snacks.

• Starbucks (Bede Campus)

Situated in the Arts Academy, Starbucks is one of our most popular spaces on campus. As well as serving all your Starbucks favourites, you can also purchase sandwiches, paninis, snacks, cold drinks and more.

• Café 1929 (Bede Campus)

Located within our Headways Building and adjacent to our Future Ready Hub, Café 1929 serves a wide range of sandwiches and

snacks, as well as hot and cold drinks for when you need to fuel your revision sessions.

All our food and drink outlets have a 5-star food hygiene rating.

Enrichment

We are committed to providing an environment where students can grow and develop by offering a wide range of wellbeing activities across our campuses.

Join in volunteering and social action projects with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, National Citizenship Service and Good for Me, Good for FE, one of our college clubs and societies or take part in weekly themed events.

IT support

We have many computers with an extensive range of software, available for students to use on a drop-in basis. Students are expected to improve their awareness of, and skills in, information technology (IT).

There are many staff who can support you in your use of IT. The college has campus-wide Wi-Fi, which enables students to access the internet and complete their college work using their own, or college, devices.

Future Ready Hubs

Our Future Ready Hubs will help you find all the resources you need for your studies, including study support such as developing your research skills, exam preparation and help with referencing alongside printing, photocopying and scanning facilities.

We also have books, eBooks, journals and a range of online resources, including your course textbooks.

If you need help locating a resource or using the facilities in the Future Ready Hub, you can speak to one of our friendly and experienced team who are there to assist you.

All resources are free to borrow, we just ask that they are returned in good condition by their due date.

Our Future Ready Hubs also offer a range of services including financial, counselling and mental health & wellbeing support.

Your journey to college

For most students, travelling to college by bus is a great option. Public transport is an environmentally friendly and a reliable way to get to campus. We understand that you may be anxious about travel, after all this might be a big change from your normal school journey. Working out your route and doing a test-run before you start college can help build your confidence.

Support with travel to college

If your household income is less than £30,000 and you live more than 1 mile from your campus of study, you could receive travel support. If your household income is between £30,000-£50,000 and you live more than 3 miles from your campus, you may also

be eligible. Students who qualify for bursary will now be offered travel support in the form of a Stagecoach Annual Pass or GNE Monthly Tickets. If you drive, you will receive 30p per mile. Mileage is capped at £60 per month.

Careers Guidance Service

We provide a free, accessible, impartial, and confidential Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) service to help current and potential students make well-informed choices about their course, progression, future learning opportunities and career goals.

Some of the services on offer include oneto-one appointments, career and CV writing workshops, and mock job interviews. Our CEIAG team is available at open events, by emailing guidance@educationpartnershipne. ac.uk or by calling 0300 770 8000.

Sunderland College has received matrix accreditation. This is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers information, advice and guidance on learning and work.

Financial support

Students aged 16-18 years old are not required to pay course fees on most of our full-time study programmes. You could be eligible for financial assistance while at college including help with course-related, transport and kit costs, childcare, free meals, or bursaries, depending on your circumstances.

Learning Support

We are all different, and sometimes our differences can impact how we learn. Our Learning Support team can provide tailored services to meet your needs including one-toone and small group sessions, in-class support or specialist equipment and technology.

Personal Tutor

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will help you settle into college and be your first point of contact for any questions about study, life, or anything else. Whatever you may need, your Personal Tutor will help you find the right support.

We can provide you with a wide range of counselling, mental health & wellbeing support services to help you make the most of your time at college. The service provides confidential, professional help for any personal issues impacting your college experience such as mental health advice, money management and carer responsibilities, or just be a friendly face for you to talk to.

Safe to Say

Safeguarding and supporting the wellbeing of our students is vitally important to us. Our Safe to Say initiative allows you to report any concerns you have directly to our Safeguarding team who will respond straight away and provide the necessary help and support.

LGBTQIA+

Self, Society and Skills/Global Skills

We have career-ready sessions and workshops to develop your knowledge, skills, and behaviours to help you discover your interests and talents.

This prepares you for learning, life, and careers through an innovative programme across six themes: Career Planning and Destinations; Community; Health and Wellbeing; Preparation for Life; Next Steps and Progression; and Celebration of Success.

Academic Study Support

From managing your workload to essay writing and exam preparation, we will support you to get the most out of your studies. We offer regular skills tutorials, and you can arrange a personal advice session with one of our team. There are also online resources available with tips and advice, all of which will help build your academic study skills.

Through our extensive enrichment programmes, you will develop essential life and employability skills to prepare you for an exciting future.

Future Ready

Our innovative Future Ready Enhanced Curriculum offers exclusive access to an inspiring range of activities outside of your main study programme. You will develop the skills and personal qualities to prepare you for the careers of tomorrow including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, critical

thinking, resilience, adaptability, and social and cultural awareness.

You will have opportunities to apply these skills to real-life challenges, study in new tech environments, and take part in masterclasses and live projects to keep you ahead of the curve.

Work placements

We work with hundreds of employers to help you become career ready. Taking part in work experience or an industry placement will give

you the edge in the job market and ensure you develop the skills, knowledge, and experience that employers require.

Project-based learning (PBL)

Our exciting project-based learning initiative is designed to bring the classroom and the world of work closer together. You will work with employers and industry experts and produce innovative ideas and solutions to real world issues and scenarios.

Skills competitions

You’ll have the opportunity to challenge yourself and showcase your newly developed skills and talent in regional, national, and even international competitions. They will look great on your CV and will develop your high-level technical skills. Some of our students have competed at the Young’s Seafood Chef of the Year, the National Esports Championships, The Guild of Bricklayers and the AHT National Finals against colleges from across the country!

Recreational sport & games

For students who enjoy the fun and social side of college life, our Youth Work team runs a series of timetabled gym, health and wellbeing activities as well as weekly table tennis, dance, football sessions and more!

Community Collectives

Our Community Collectives group represents students from a range of backgrounds coming together to share insights about their cultural values, beliefs, and customs. They work together to organise events to celebrate the rich diversity of our college community, showcasing different traditions, languages, foods, and customs to foster a deeper understanding and respect for one another.

Careers Fairs

Throughout the year we host a series of inspirational Careers Fairs attended by leading local and national employers and universities to showcase the opportunities available to you when you leave college.

Game on

Do you have a passion for sport?

Our Sports Academies give students the opportunity to combine their studies with an elite training programme with professional coaching in state-of-the art facilities, competitive matches, performance analysis and exclusive links with professional and semi-professional sports clubs.

These Academies are open to all Sunderland College students, so you don’t have to be studying a sports qualification to be involved! For example, you could be studying A-Levels, a T Level or a technical course such as Construction while competing for your Sports Academy.

Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme If you are a talented athlete and represent your sport regionally and/or nationally, we can support you with a Talented Athlete Scholarship.

The Sport England supported scheme brings the best out of the country’s most exciting talented athletes by helping them balance sport with their education.

Women’s Football Academy

Our Women’s Football Academy, delivered in partnership with Foundation of Light, is part of Sunderland AFC’s Professional Game Academy, which provides talented female footballers with a clear route from a young age through to professional football.

Academic or technical, find the right route for you.

Choosing what course to study at college can be tough, especially when there are so many on offer. Thinking about the career path you’re interested in and understanding the type of course that suits you means you will engage in a course that you are passionate about which will guide you towards an exciting and rewarding future.

T Levels A-Levels

Our A-Levels will enable you to study academic subjects in more depth and are great preparation if you are thinking of going to university. You will gain knowledge across a suite of academic subjects and have access to an extensive enrichment programme.

Technical courses

These courses are designed to prepare you for a career or higher-level study. You will gain skills for a specific sector and experience a more practical way of learning to develop your skills and knowledge.

Directions

Our Directions programme is tailored for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. We offer a varied curriculum delivered by specialist staff, to make sure you achieve your goals, gain your independence and fulfil your own unique potential.

Pathways

Our T Level qualifications will give you the opportunity to experience an industry while studying. You will gain a high-quality, technical qualification and job-specific skills and knowledge through a combination of classroom learning and placement to develop practical and technical skills.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships can help you get started in a new career by combining study with real work experience and mean you can be earning a wage while you’re studying from day one. You will learn ‘hands on’ in a specific job role and be given a fasttrack route into your chosen career.

ESOL

Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses offer more than just learning basic English skills. The curriculum offers a gateway to increasing confidence, career advancement, and empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive in an interconnected world.

If you are unable to progress to your chosen course due to entry requirements, personal barriers or unsure of your career pathway, this programme will help you develop your skills.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements vary for each course. We offer courses at various levels, so even if you don’t have any formal qualifications, we are confident we will have the right course or subject for you.

Studying English and maths at college

English and maths are important life skills that will support you in achieving the most from your studies and progression to your chosen career.

Employers and universities require them, and GCSE English and maths qualifications could be the difference between being accepted onto a university course, securing employment, or gaining a promotion.

If you have achieved:

• A grade 4-9 in GCSE English and/or maths at school, you will develop your English and maths skills throughout your course at college.

• A grade 1-3 in GCSE English and/or maths at school, you will re-sit your GCSE qualification at college.

• A grade U in GCSE English and/or maths at school, we can discuss the best English and maths study options for you at college.

Real World Maths

If you are a Level 2 student, you will receive ‘Real World Maths’ sessions tailored and relevant to the sector you are studying, where you will see first-hand how the skills you are developing are essential to your career progression.

Sunderland College Sixth Form at Bede Campus

A-Levels will give you the qualifications, knowledge, and experience to progress to university or your chosen career.

At Sunderland College Sixth Form, you can study 3 to 4 A-Levels or combine them with A-Level equivalent vocational qualifications.

It’s up to you! When choosing what to study, it’s important to consider subjects that link, cross over or complement each other.

Entry requirements

To be able to select from our wide range of A-Level and A-Level equivalent vocational courses, the general entry criteria is a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above.

Most of these subjects will also have specific requests for GCSE Maths and/or GCSE English Language to be at a grade 4+.

A-Level subjects frequently have individual entry criteria which are higher – for example, some essay-based subjects request GCSE English Language at grade 5+, and Science subjects will require GCSE Maths and Science to be at a grade 6+. Please refer to our website for specific entry criteria for each subject.

Progression to Sixth Form

This one-year level 2 programme has been tailor-made to provide opportunities for school leavers who may not have achieved the required grades at GCSE to study A-Levels, or for those students who do not feel ready to start their journey with Sunderland College Sixth Form straight away.

This one-year programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge to progress into the Social Sciences subject area to study A-Levels in Law, Criminology, Psychology or Sociology. To study this course, you will need 5 GCSEs at grades 3+, including Maths and English.

7 key facts you need to know:

1. An apprenticeship is a real job.

2. You will be paid a salary.**

3. Apprenticeships last a minimum of 12 months and range from Level 2 to Level 7.

4. Your training will be fully funded.

5. Apprentices will receive paid off-the-job learning.

6. Apprentices will spend most of their time on-the-job.

7. There are thousands of apprenticeships in more than 170 industries, including Animal and Land-based, Business and Administration, Computing and IT, Early Years and Childcare, Engineering and Manufacturing, Sports Coaching and more!

**What you will earn depends on the industry, location and type of apprenticeship you choose. If you’re aged 16 to 19 or in the first year of your apprenticeship, you’re entitled to the apprenticeship minimum hourly rate of £7.55.

Higher Education

Studying Higher Education can give you access to exciting career opportunities and help you develop your skills to give you the edge in the competitive jobs market.

We offer a wide range of university-level courses including Childcare & Education, Business, Construction & Engineering, Creative, and Health & Care, validated by the University of Cumbria and University of Hull. We also work in partnership with Northumbria University.

Access to Higher Education

Access to Higher Education programmes are one-year courses that will allow you to access your chosen degree, or an apprenticeship.

They are designed to provide a progression route for those who have been out of formal education, or who do not have the qualifications to progress straight to Higher Education.

Alongside your course you can also receive support with UCAS applications, careers guidance, and industry expert tutors to help with your progression.

Financial support

Did you know that we can help you with the cost of college? Students aged 16-18 years old are not required to pay course fees on most of our full-time study programmes.

If your household income is less than £30,000, we can support eligible students with transport to college as well as course-related costs such as uniform, kit, equipment, books, trips and UCAS fees.

If you are in receipt of Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit, and your income does not exceed the thresholds, your child could be eligible for free college meals.
