The audience meets Juliana, a successful neurologist whose life is becoming unhinged. Her success at work is unquestioned, but at home, her husband is filing for a divorce and her daughter has disappeared with a much older man. When she gives a lecture in the Virgin Islands, things become worse. A doctor is called. Her mother died of a brain tumor at an early age. Could the same thing happen to her? Nothing is as it seems. Juliana longs to escape to the family’s other place on Cape Cod to begin anew. Will she succeed? For tickets or info, call 215574-3550 or 800-982-2787 or visit www.walnutstreettheatre.org. • The Wilma Theater, 265 South Broad Street in Philadelphia, presents When the Rain Stops Falling, October 12 - November 6. A fish falls from the sky in the year 2039. A man named Gabriel prepares to meet his adult son after being estranged for twenty years. He wonders why his son is coming and what he wants: To know who he is? Where he comes from? Where he belongs? Gabriel knows nothing as his own past escapes him. As the story of Gabriel’s family unfolds onstage, his ancestors come alive around him to fill in the gaps. “Maya’s Blanket” has won the 2016 Bock Book Award, presented by Neumann University. The book tells the story of Maya, the main character, who receives a blanket from her grandmother. Readers then follow Maya through her life as the blanket becomes a dress, a skirt, a shawl, and so on. The story is an exploration of the lasting love in a family and an illustration of sustainability and reuse. Brown put a Latino spin on a traditionally Yiddish folk tale to reflect her own Jewish and Latina background. After reading her story to an audience of youngsters, she will speak to Neumann students and faculty at a forum on social justice issues in children’s literature. The event is free and open to the public. Brown has written many award-winning books for children, including Pablo Neruda: Poet of the People (Henry Holt), and Waiting for the Biblioburro (Random House). She is a professor of English at Northern Arizona University. The Bock Book Award, established in 2000, acknowledges Franciscan values in children’s book. Criteria for the award include text that is values-oriented, interesting and stimulating for ages 3-8 years, and pleasing and aesthetic. The illustrations should provide support for interpreting the story, instill a reverence for and compassion for all creation, and depict creation in all its diversity. Both the text and illustrations should promote a moral attitude and/or action.

Stahl’s Pottery’s 9th Annual Fall Pottery Fest o you love admiring fine craftsmanship and exquisite pottery? Want to learn more about a local, early twentieth-century pottery? If so, plan to visit the Stahl’s Pottery Fall Pottery Festival on October 1, 2016, located at 6826 Corning Road, Zionsville, PA, on the outskirts of beautiful Powder Valley. Sponsored by Stahl’s Pottery Preservation Society, this marks the 9th year for this event. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is $4 per adult (over 18) and parking is free. Activities at the festival include tours of the historic, redware pottery, pottery demonstrations, a museum exhibit of Stahl’s Pottery and over two dozen contemporary potters displaying and selling their fabulous, hand-crafted redware, stoneware or porcelain. A light lunch and baked goods sale are also available, as well as pottery memorabilia and books. The 25th anniversary commemorative redware sgraffito plate made by Joel Leh, great grandson of Thomas Stahl, will be available as well as a history book entitled, “Stahl’s Pottery of Powder Valley,” featuring historic photos of the Pottery and a color portfolio of pottery made at Stahl’s Pottery. Stahl's Pottery Preservation Society was founded in 1987 to preserve and interpret the Stahl’s Pottery site. The site includes the potting shed, home of Thomas and Alice Stahl, and the round, stone wood-fired kiln built in 1933/34. Thomas and Isaac Stahl ran the pottery from 1934 to 1950, using the skills they had learned from their father, Charles Stahl, in the nineteenth century. After 1950, Russell Stahl, Isaac’s son continued the business until 1956, when the kiln was fired for the last time. All funds raised at the event help to continue the preservation and interpretation of the site. For directions and information, visit www.stahlspottery.org or call 610-965-5019.

to ballet for male dancers. He was born prematurely on a Trans Siberian train in 1938 and trained at the Kirov Ballet Academy where he brought passion and uncompromising dedication to classical technique. Throughout his career he dazzled audiences and they showed their appreciation. In deed, on October 1964 in Vienna, Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn received 89 curtain calls at the end of their performance of Swan Lake—a record for curtain calls which remains unequalled to this day, and which is still in the Guinness Book of World Records! His last role was in Sleeping Beauty, performed in Berlin in 1992. The next year, at age 54, he passed away. He was quoted as saying, “As long as my ballets are danced, I will live.” Élisabeth Platel, a French Prima Ballerina, once said, In Jamie Wyeth’s painting Rudolf Nureyev does a bow of humility and appreciation to his “He taught us that the stage audience and the Academy of International Ballet (AIB) dancers bow with reverence is a sacred place, whatever the and appreciation to Nureyev. Photo/Rick Prieur theatre, whether it be the most prestigious and the most sophisticated, or the most humble and the most rudimentary. He taught us to exist.” In preparation for their visit AIB dancers gathered with warm smiles in the museum’s gallery under the watchful eye of the many Nureyev’s paintings as they immediately adjusted their pointe shoes, and began to stretch, bend and prepare their bodies to warm up and acquire proper flexibility for the photo shoot with Nureyev. They know that after their many years of practice, rehearsals, performances, in addition to standing in front of mirrors in the studio constantly correcting themselves, they are ready for the cherished moments to pose shoulder to shoulder with the beautiful paintings of Jamie Wyeth and a ballet giant known as Rudolf Nureyev. Anastasia Babayeva spoke to the dancers in French, the international language of ballet, then in English to perfect each pose and then offer them words of inspiration so they may capture the mood of the moment with Nureyev. Professional photographer Rick Prieur added, “The time to think of ballets future is today and it is a joy for me to capture its beauty in images.” Anastasia then said, “Throughout history, dance has been used to communicate—to ward off war, to bring rain, to inspire blessings, to honor someone, to celebrate and to bring beauty into this world. At this time our dancers bring beauty with a delicate mixture of fragility and power to the moment. They know that being in this beautiful museum of art and doing this photo shoot with Nureyev is a reminder to us all that classical ballet shares with us the privilege of having a soul. It offers us unconditional beauty. It is a role model for being alive.” Free Performance by the Academy of International Ballet at the Brandywine River Museum of Art On Sunday, October 2, at 1:30 p.m. enjoy a beautiful and lively performance by dancers from the Academy of International Ballet at the Brandywine River Museum of Art as part of PNC Arts Alive First Sundays for Families. The dancers will perform a variety of classical and contemporary works as well as excerpts from the “Nutcracker Ballet,” under the artistic direction of Denis Gronostayskiy and Anastasia Babayeva. The seated event will be held in the Lecture Room. The Academy of International Ballet, located in Media, PA, offers training in classical ballet to a wide spectrum of students in the finest traditions of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, using their time-honored Russian-based Vaganova ballet method. Admission to the museum and the ballet performance are FREE. There is ample free parking adjacent to the museum. EDUCATION NEWS

Devon Prep Freshmen Participate in Adventure Education he 48 young men in Devon Prep’s Freshman Class got to know each other while working together outside of the classroom as they participated in Adventure in Education Day, sponsored by the school’s Guidance Department. The goal of this interactive learning experience was to strengthen the developing bond among the members of the class as they begin their high school journey. The freshmen were divided into randomly formed groups giving them a chance to meet all the members of the Class of 2020. While participating in new challenging activities and stretching their own expectations they discovered the value of cooperative or group power and learned that sometimes a group, when working together, can accomplish what an individual cannot.

Devon Prep Freshmen, from left – Nicholas Perullo of Swarthmore, Joseph Cecchine of Drexel Hill and Daniel Fotezu of King of Prussia, help a fellow ninth grader climb the ten foot wall during the Adventure in Education Day for the Class of 2020. The program, which took place at an outdoor course in Newtown Square, involved traditional outdoor activities such as group games and a low ropes course. Most situations called for team problem solving, good communications, trust in one another, respect of individual differences within a group, and working together to fulfill the task created. The goal was not competition but cooperation. The students learned to solve problems by working together in a group creatively and effectively, and to take responsibility for the outcomes of their decisions. Devon Prep is a small, independent, Catholic college preparatory school for young men in grades six through 12 conducted by the Piarist Fathers and located on Philadelphia’s Main Line. Devon Prep will hold an Open House on Tuesday, October 18 and Thursday, October 20 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Scholarship/Entrance Exams are scheduled for Saturday, October 22, and Saturday, October 29 at 8:30 a.m. For information call 610-688-73370 or visit www.devonprep.com.

Devon Prep Freshmen Robert Burdick of Norristown, Colin Fulmer of West Chester and Morgan Unruh of West Chester participated in the school’s Adventure Education Day which took place on a low ropes course in Newtown Square.

rary stage, igniting the mind, body and soul through the power of the actor, design and spoken word. Quintessence continues to work towards the establishment of an acting ensemble and a rotating repertory at the historic Sedgwick Theater in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia. As Quintessence Theatre’s home, the Sedgwick Theater, a 1928 art deco movie palace designed by William Lee, will regain its place as a jewel in Philadelphia’s cultural landscape. Quintessence’s seventh season will continue with “Wilde Tales,” an original adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s short stories adapted and directed by Jeremy Bloom, with an original score by David Cope. In the Spring Quintessence will present the Love and Longing repertory, pairing Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “Love’s Labor’s Lost” with John Ford’s heartrending revenge tragedy “The Broken Heart.” The season will conclude in the summer with Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” in a new translation by Annie Baker. “Mother Courage and Her Children” plays October 12 -November 6. A special Pay-WhatYou-Can preview will be presented on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. Post-show talkbacks with the cast and director will take place on Sunday, October 23 and Thursday, October 27. Performances take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Check the performance schedule at www.QTGrep.org for exact performance times and schedules. rauhaus Schmitz will transform the 16,000 square-foot 23rd Street Armory (22 S. 23rd St.) into the likeness of a Munich festival tent for the first annual 23rd Street Armory Oktoberfest running Friday through Sunday, October 7 - 9, 2016. Decked out with Bavarian blue and white ceilings, authentic festival tables and benches imported from Germany plus a lofted stage area for musical acts like the Grammy-nominated Alex Meixner Band, Brauhaus will throw the trip-state region’s largest Oktoberfest celebration. Traditional food provided by Chef Jeremy Nolen and beer will be provided by the famous Hofbräuhaus will be served. Tickets are available for each of the five sessions for $45 general admission, or $65 VIP. With the most authentic German dancing, food, entertainment, beer and more this new festival is sure to be as amazing as Munich! For information and tickets to the 23rd Street Armory Oktoberfest, visit http://brauhausschmitzoktoberfest.com/. “We have seven years of experience from South Street Oktoberfest in hosting tens of thousands of guests for the city’s most well-known celebration,” said Brauhaus owner Doug Hager. “We reach capacity every year and had no room to grow our South Street event. We also wanted to challenge ourselves by creating a brand-new, three-day, truly unique experience. We will transform the Armory from top to bottom – and put on an even bigger and better show. With its 16,000 square feet and 30 foot ceilings the vision was clear the first time I walked into the space.” On Columbus Day weekend, Brauhaus Schmitz debuts a new three-day festival that will offer five sessions each for up to 1,500 people. There truly is nothing currently like this in the entire region or state and the fest is expected to attract folks from Philly, SE PA, Baltimore, DC, NYC and beyond. The schedule is as follows: • Friday, October 7, 2016, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (entertainment: Alex Meixner). • Saturday, October 8, 2016, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (entertainment: Die Heimatklange). • Saturday, October 8, 2016, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (entertainment: Alex Meixner). • Sunday, October 9, 2016, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (entertainment: Die Heimatklange). • Sunday, October 9, 2016, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (entertainment: Bavarski). General admission tickets for all sessions include: open seating on imported festival benches, traditional Bavarian food, first liter of beer, glass 1L mass stein to take home and entertainment by the German Hungarian Dancers as well as a featured entertainer (listed above). VIP tickets for each session includes all of the above plus VIP quick entrance, reserved seating by the band and dance floor, table service, and brotzeit (meat and cheese board) on table when you arrive. Each session will also include a ceremonial Keg tapping with special honored guests. One lucky person from the weekend will also have the chance to win an all expenses paid trip to Germany for Oktoberfest 2017, with proceeds benefiting Volunteers of America. Traditional Oktoberfest food will be provided by Chef Jeremy Nolen and beer will be provided by the world famous Hofbräuhaus. “Upwards of 400 Kegs of beer will be shipped across the ocean from the World Famous Hofbrau Brewery in Munich,” added Hager. “Personally I’ve been to Oktoberfest in Munich 7 times and although we could never get anywhere close to re-creating that experience, we are going to try our hardest. Prost!”
