The exhibit opens Friday, March 13, with a reception to meet the artist, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. centuries, genres, and styles. As a student of that grand tradition, Philadelphia-area photographer Robin Hiteshew has made a decades-long project of capturing the images – and even the essences – of as many contemporary Irish writers as he can. Fifty-eight of his finest portraits will be presented at the Villanova Art Gallery from March 13 - April 14, 2020, in his exhibit, Beyond the Words: Portraits of Irish Writers. Visitors to Beyond the Words will encounter the likenesses of poets Seamus Heaney, Eavan Boland, Eamon Grennan, and Michael Longley; and novelists Colm Toibin, Anne Enright, and Glenn Patterson, among many others. Some writers – like Heaney – sat for Hiteshew multiple times over the course of several years, and each portrait captures a different moment in the writer’s evolution. Always, the images represent a collaboration between the photographer and the subject. Hiteshew says, “My goal is to try and capture in a portrait something about who the person is. I hope that the viewer will come away from the photograph knowing something about who that person is in some kind of intangible way. But also, I hope that the viewer will leave wanting to know more about the writer—to read his or her work, perhaps.” The images in Beyond the Words: Portraits of Irish Writers are about evenly divided between black and white film and digital color photographs. Nearly half of them were shot on the Villanova University campus, while those writers were in town for a reading or as the Charles A. Heimbold Jr. Chair of Irish Studies, a visiting professorship. Early in the development of the series, Hiteshew would attend a wide variety of readings by Irish writers and introduce himself right there, sometimes capturing the writer’s portrait in the few minutes before or after an event. As the project gained momentum, however, he has been able to develop on-

Public Gerrymandering Reform Event in Berywn – February 26 presentation on "Redistricting Reform – Not Red, Not Blue, Just Fair” will be made at the Easttown Library and Information Center on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at 7 p.m. Mark Pavlovich, Fair Districts-PA Advocacy Advisor for Southeast PA, will explain why gerrymandering reform is critically needed in Pennsylvania. They will also explain why the participation of a motivated citizenry across Pennsylvania is urgently needed in 2020 to change how our Congressional and state legislative maps are drawn. American politicians have practiced gerrymandering, the intentional manipulation of election district lines to protect incumbents and secure partisan advantage, for more than 200 years. In a profound distortion of the Democratic process, recent advances in mapping technology and voter data collection have made it possible for those who draw district lines in Pennsylvania to capture voting districts and control election results well before a single vote has been cast. Politicians are selecting their voters through mapmaking rather than voters choosing their political leaders at elections. If the players and process do not change, democracy in Pennsylvania will continue to weaken. Every state, upon 2020 census completion, must re-draw their state legislative and congressional maps in 2021. At stake are new district maps for 203 state reps, 50 state senators and 18 congressional maps. The current closed-door process for drawing all these maps

A

rests in the hands of 5 individuals, 4 of whom are political leaders from both major parties. Carol Kuniholm, the co-founder and chair of Fair Districts PA, said, “by any measure, Pennsylvania is among the most severely gerrymandered states in the nation. This means diminished choice for all voters. Our distorted districts yield a less accountable government that is unable to enact policy solutions or accomplish even the minimum requirement of the job -- to agree on a reasonable budget.” Fair Districts-PA endorses redistricting reform legislation that puts redistricting control in the hands of an Independent Citizens Commission, operating transparently and with a minimum of personal voter data. Fair Districts-PA’s reform legislation has garnered a near-majority of state representatives’ support during the current 2019-20 legislative session – but appears blocked by leaders of both parties. Time is short! All are welcome to attend this education event to understand the problem, the proposed solutions and how every citizen can help end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania. Area Pennsylvania legislators have also been invited to attend. The Easttown Library and Information Center is located at 720 First Avenue, Berwyn, PA. The telephone number is 610-644-0138. For information, go to www.FairDistrictsPA.com.

Rafferty will explain the critical need for redistricting reform in Pennsylvania in 2020. He will also explain why the participation of a motivated citizenry is urgently needed to change how our Congressional and state legislative maps are drawn. All are welcome to attend these education events to understand the problem, the proposed solutions, and how every citizen can help end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania. Reading Avenue, Boyertown on Monday, March 4, 2020 at 6:45 p.m. by Fair Districts PA – Berks and Montgomery County leaders. Fair Districts-PA endorses redistricting reform legislation that puts redistricting control in the hands of an Independent Citizens Commission, operating transparently and with a minimum of personal voter data. Fair Districts-PA’s reform legislation has garnered a near-majority of state representatives support during the current 2019-20 legislative session – but appears blocked by leaders of both parties. They receive unparalleled preparation for eighth and ninth grades and beyond, prepare for the entrance exams for high school, and learn various skills, such as time management and effective study skills. Plus there is a healthy living component, where students utilize MMA’s new (air-conditioned) gymnasium and other fitness amenities,” said Mrs. Harrison. f you ask Philadelphia musician Harvey Price what’s the best way to resolve conflict, he’ll say, “Make music together.” With this coupon. Not valid with other offers or prior purchases. Exp. 3/19/20 And, that’s exactly what he has done for seven years. With the goal of bringing together children who are Jewish, Christian F u l ly I n s u r e d a n d B o n d e d and Muslim in the Galilee region of Israel, Price has encouraged peacemaking and social impact through the Peace Drums 2 Bala Plaza, Suite 300, Bala Cynwyd, PA Steel Band. And, now, the band is returning to the United States, with a new set of band members, to demonstrate their Certified Nursing Assistants • Home Health Aides camaraderie in performances in Philadelphia, PA and Wilmington, DE in April 2020. In 2013, Price had the dream to form a steel band of Jewish and Arab students in Israel to encourage them to connect with the shared goal of playing steel drums in a band. With the support of clergy from Delaware Churches for Mid-East Peace, THANKS FOR READING CITY SUBURBAN NEWS EVERY WEEK! that dream became a reality. It was Price and Israeli Michael Chacour who negotiated alliances among Israeli, Arab and Jewish partner schools. The initial 20 students that started in the band in 2013 has grown to 150 students currently participating in Peace Drums. Now, four years after their initial US tour, an ensemble of 25 middle school musicians from the Peace Drums cohort is coming to the United States to demonstrate their new passion for Caribbean steel drum music as well as their commitment to each other for a shared society. The mission of the Peace Drums Steel Band has gotten tremendous support in the past few years. In addition to the United States State Department that provided a USAID grant administered by the U.S. Embassy in Israel, The Peace Drums tour is also supported by Peace Drums US and Peace Drums Israel. The Peace Drums performances will take place April 17 through April 22, 2020 in Philadelphia and Wilmington, giving the following performances: • Friday, April 17 – 7:30 p.m. in Wilmington, DE. Free Admission. Grace United Methodist Church, 900 Washington St., Wilmington, DE 19801. • Saturday, April 18 - 7:30 p.m. in Philadelphia. $75 ticket to the annual fundraiser. Congregation Adath Jeshurun, 7763 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027. Harvey Price explains the use of the steel drum for this peace mission. He said, “When I first started teaching students to play steel drums, I noticed they formed a really nice bond. Using steel drums seemed ideal because they are instruments from Trinidad and have nothing to do with either culture – Arab or Jewish – and it’s something brand new for all Doctoral Degrees the students. In addition, the steel drum itself was born out of conflict in Trinidad and Tobago and used for conflict resolution.” Price, who travels to Israel several times a year • Counselor Education and to work with the students and their teachers, is excited and enthusiastic about this second Super vision (PhD) US Tour. He added, “I can’t wait to see the response to the students when they are here in the United States demonstrating their love for the instrument and their appreciation of each • Educational Leadership (EdD) other. It is my dream that they become models for others, who will come together through • Physical Therapy (DPT) music and focus on their similarities instead of differences.” Being supported by the USAID is quite an honor. The USAID West Bank/Gaza and the U.S. Embassy in Israel jointly invest in Conflict Management and Mitigation (CMM) grants, which Master Master’s ’s Degrees support Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel, working on issues of common concern. Comedian Lewis Black at the Merriam Performing New Riotous It Gets Better Every Day Tour March 6, 2020

Award-winning comedian Lewis Black’s “It Gets Better Every Day” Tour will be at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 8 p.m. he Kimmel Center Cultural Campus presents, in association with Live Nation, awardwinning stand-up comedian Lewis Black, who is undoubtedly one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a standup comedian, actor, and author. Black’s It Gets Better Every Day Tour will be at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 8 p.m. “Lewis Black has been an established figure on the comedy scene for many years, showcasing his ingenious performances and unique style across many facets of entertainment,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We are thrilled to welcome Black’s return to our Cultural Campus as part of our growing comedy series.” Receiving critical acclaim with his position as the “king of the rant,” Lewis Black maintains his trademark style of comedic yelling in order to skewer anything and anyone that gets under his skin. In the past, Black hosted Comedy Central’s hit series Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil and makes regular appearances on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, delivering his famous “Back in Black” commentary segment. “Back in Black” is one of the most popular and longest-running segments on The Daily Show, beginning with John Stewart’s tenure and continuing with current host, Trevor Noah. Black has earned five Grammy® nominations and two wins (2007 for The Carnegie Hall Performance and 2011 for Stark Raving Mad) for Best Comedy Album. Black was also nominated for an Emmy ® in 2007 for one of his HBO specials, Red, White and Screwed. While Black was in college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he began studying playwriting. After college, Black attended Yale University where he earned an MFA degree. When Black first started his career, he was working as a playwright at a prominent theater. He served as the playwright-in-residence at the West Bank Cafe’s Downstairs Theatre Bar in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City, where he oversaw the development of more than 1,000 plays, including works by the famous West Wing creator, Aaron Sorkin. In the 1980s, Black left the West Bank Cafe to pursue a stand-up career full time. In addition to his acting, Black has also written three best-selling books (Nothing’s Sacred, Me of Little Faith, and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas) and over 40 plays. Additionally, Black was voted as one of the top 100 greatest comedians of all time by Comedy Central. Black is also known for hosting the History of the Joke, a 2-hour comedy-documentary on The History Channel, in 2008. He returned to The History Channel in 2009 to host Surviving the Holidays with Lewis Black, in which he discussed the year-end pressures of Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas, and New Year’s. Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Paula Poundstone (March 7, 2020, Merriam Theater), MasterChef Junior Live! (March 11, 2020, Merriam Theater), The Chieftains: The Irish Goodbye (March 11, 2020, Verizon Hall), and Ilana Glazer (March 21, 2020, Merriam Theater). Tickets are on sale now starting at $39.50. Tickets can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center Box Office.

Gallery222 Malvern Announces “The Maine Event” G

allery222 Malvern announces “The Maine Event” with amazing fine art highlighting all aspects of the scenic state of Maine. The show opens on February 19 and runs through March 14 with the public artist reception on Thursday, February 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. While the Gallery is ecstatic to highlight the beauty of Maine, that’s not the only reason why this show is different and special. “The Maine Event” is an ALL woman show at a gallery owned by a woman. The Gallery has assembled an all-star cast of seven female artists: Elaine Lisle, Jacalyn Beam, Elise Phillips, Valerie Craig, Nancy Bea Miller, Eliza Auth, and Alexandra Tyng. Malvern resident and owner of Gallery222 Malvern, Andrea Strang is thrilled to bring these award-winning Plein air artists together in “The Maine Event.” “If 2020 hasn’t been declared the year of the women in the art world yet, I guess Gallery222 Malvern is doing it now,” says Strang. “As a female gallery owner, I don’t think I can be prouder than to have these seven talented ladies showing with us and with such an amazing and beautiful theme. We just can’t wait.” “One of the wonderful things about painting en Plein air has been the chance to develop friendships and travel with other painters,” says participating artist Elaine Lisle. “Most of us have painted together for many years, either in Plein air competitions or on painting trips, locally and even in Europe.” “The Maine Event” will predominately feature Plein air paintings. All of their fine art will be available for purchase in the gallery as well in Gallery222 Malvern’s online shop once the show opens. Visit www.gallery222malvern.com for information on the Gallery and the online shop. Find Great Upcoming Events Every Week in City Suburban News!
