The cast of Villanova Theatre’s “Godspell” includes Megan Slater (John the Baptist/ Judas) and Mina Kawahara (Jesus). Performances run September 19 through October 1, 2017. Best Direction of a Play two years in a row. This beloved show by John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz, brings to life the Gospel According to Matthew through parables, song, and dance. Villanova’s production showcases a diverse cast of versatile performers—including two talented women in the roles of Jesus and John the Baptist/Judas. Performances run September 19 October 1, 2017. Pfeiffer’s concept for this inventive and energetic Godspell arises from the idea of a group of performers coming together in an empty theatre to retell and rediscover this timeless story as vividly and immediately as possible. First-year graduate acting scholar Mina Kawahara takes on the role of Jesus with second-year acting scholar Megan Slater as her counterpart in the role of John/Judas. This unusual, gender-blind casting choice highlights the universality of Jesus’s message of kindness, tolerance and love, and invites audiences to see and hear a familiar story with fresh eyes and ears. Academy, Tony, and Grammy Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz captured the hearts of musical lovers in 1971 with Godspell’s sensational pop-rock score. From heartfelt ballads to quick-witted, tongue-twisting lyrics, Schwartz’s lively and resonant score stirs the spirit and comforts the soul. Beyond its ability to entertain, Godspell allows collaborators and audiences alike to explore questions at the heart of Christianity and humanity through its playful, poetic parables. James Whitmore Award for Excellence: Peterborough Players, 2002. Craig Noel Award for Professional Promise: Old Globe Theatre, 2005. In a return to site-specific work (Creditors, The Sea Plays, The Captive), PAC presents Iphigenia at Aulis by Euripides on the USS Olympia docked next to the Independence Seaport Museum. The ship offers an intimate, up-close-and-personal space where the audience is part of the action and the ship becomes part of the narrative. “We have a history of performing our Fringe pieces in historic locations around the city,” said Hodge. “Iphigenia At Aulis has always been a favorite, and the Olympia felt like the perfect fit. We sat down for a meeting and immediately found a ready compatibility. The ship itself is like a character in the play and adds a whole new dimension to the production.” From the moment of her launching in 1892, Cruiser Olympia was a rare treasure in the U.S. naval fleet, as no sister ships were ever built. She is the world’s oldest floating steel warship and the sole surviving naval ship of the Spanish-American War. Cruiser Olympia served as Admiral Dewey’s flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay, which marked the U.S.’s emergence as a world naval power. Cruiser Olympia’s last official naval mission was to carry the body of the Unknown Soldier from France to the United States in 1921. In addition to being a National Historic Landmark, Cruiser Olympia is also a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, on the National Register of Historic Places, and part of the Save America’s Treasures program. For more information about either historic ships’ collection, contact the J. Welles Henderson Archives and Library. If you are interested in donating historical artifacts and records to the collections, contact the Seaport Museum’s Chief Curator.

Director Matt Pfeiffer adds, “The piece has the capacity to transcend religious denomination, to engage in the ways in which stories have the power to uplift and inspire all walks of life. There is a corruption of the spirit right now, a corruption of human core beliefs that leads to conflict and ruin. If we can get at what makes this story human and universal, then I think we’re getting somewhere.” Pfeiffer’s Godspell lifts the musical out of its specific origins in the early 1970s to focus on the timeless value of community building. The production retains the revolutionary, transitional feeling of its original time period, as the cast builds a world that will speak to today’s audiences. In his work with classical texts, Pfeiffer’s goal has been “not to do a period piece or a museum piece, but rather to evoke the way in which the actors and the playwright approached the play. I’ve always felt Shakespeare’s poetry allows for this approach, and I am interested in similar aesthetics on this project. Whenever I’m asked, ‘What are you going to do with this play?’ I always respond by saying, ‘I want to find out what it’s going to do to me.’” Pfeiffer and music director Peter Hilliard foster a uniquely fluid arrangement of actors and orchestra, with actors playing instruments on certain songs, and musicians incorporated into the onstage action. The production conveys the feeling of a found space, as if these actors are performing for the very first time, making every night a unique and personal experience. “What attracts me to the play is the way it allows us to boil down to theater essentials,” Pfeiffer says. “Theater was born out of religious ceremony, and Godspell has always felt like an irreverent and inventive approach to that kind of spiritual theater.” The production’s inspired design team includes scenic designer Michael Lambui, whose austere, stripped-down set fulfills Pfeiffer’s vision for a spare, ceremonial space. Jerry Forsyth’s lighting includes the use of actor-operated lighting instruments placed around the stage, providing a “playground” for the eclectic and colorful costumes designed by Jennifer Povish. Choreographer Nikki Cousineau’s work will highlight the storytelling power of movement and dance. Sound Designer John Stovicek completes the team, balancing actors, musicians, and actor-musicians to deliver Schwartz’s powerful score. The cast includes acting scholars Mina Kawahara (Jesus), Megan Slater (John the Baptist/ Judas), Kara Krichman (Joanne), and Walter Tucker (Lamar); second-year graduate assistants Leo Bond (Jeffrey) and Sisi Wright (Peggy); theatre graduate students Marissa Kennedy (Robin), Heather Lemos (Gilmer), Galen Blanzaco (Sonia), and Mark Wheeler (Ensemble); English graduate student Stephen Reaugh (Herb); and Temple University undergraduate Katie Horner (Joanne u.s., Ensemble). Godspell runs at Villanova Theatre in Vasey Hall from September 19 - October 1, 2017. Speaker’s Night, immediately following the performance on Thursday, September 28, will feature commentary from Villanova University Professor of Theology and Religious Studies Dr. Paul Danove. Vasey Hall is located on Villanova’s main campus at the intersection of Lancaster & Ithan Avenues. Performances will be held Tuesdays - Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets run $21-$25, with discounts available for seniors, students, MA in Theatre alumni, and groups. Tickets may be purchased at the Villanova Theatre Box Office (M-S, 12-5 p.m.) in person, by phone: 610-519-7474, or online at www.villanovatheatre.org.

Area Libraries to Host Repeat Presentations of College Admissions Workshops he Bala Cynwyd Library (131 Old Lancaster Road, Bala Cynwyd); the Belmont Hills Library (120 Mary Watersford Road, Belmont Hills) and the Ludington Library (5 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr, at the corner of Lancaster Avenue) will host repeat presentations of the four-session workshop Understanding and Demystifying College Admissions this fall. Originally conducted at the Bala Cynwyd Library in the summer of 2000, these interactive sessions will aid both parents and students in comprehending contemporary college admissions. Topics to be covered will include guidelines and parameters of present college admissions; the process of creating a college search; differences among colleges and universities; how an admissions committee operates and what criteria they seek; standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, Subject Tests, ACT); the new Coalition application; financial aid; hot topics and current trends in college admissions; and special admissions considerations. The workshops will be conducted by Wynnewood resident Cigus Vanni. Mr. Vanni recently retired from the position of lead guidance counselor at Cherry Hill West (NJ) High School and has assumed his rightful place as Neighborhood College Fairy. A former assistant dean and admissions counselor at Swarthmore College, Mr. Vanni served as an elected assembly delegate for the New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling to its parent organization, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling from 2003-2006 and from this year through 2018. He was also appointed as a member of the Professional Development Committee of the national organization from 2007-2010, assisting in the creation and implementation of opportunities by which high school counselors and college admissions personnel can improve their professional skills and is presently a member of the Admissions Practices Committee. The sessions will be held at the Bala Cynwyd Library from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on successive Sundays: September 24; October 1, 8 and 15; at the Belmont Hills Library from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on successive Thursdays: September 28; October 5, 12 and 19; and at Ludington Library from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on successive Sundays: October 29; November 5, 12 and 19. Sessions are cumulative (students and parents may attend all as a series) but cover different topics and concerns (parents and students may attend any of the sessions independently). There is no fee associated with these workshops. Sessions are neither endorsed nor sponsored by the Lower Merion Library Association, and are intended to augment – rather than supplant or substitute for – high school counseling efforts. No pre-registration is required. For information, contact Head Librarian Jean Knapp (Bala Cynwyd) at 610-664-1196; Head Librarian Lizzie Barrie (Belmont Hills) at 610-664-8427; or Head Librarian Robyn Langston (Ludington) at 610-525-1776. Philadelphia School of Circus Arts announces the grand opening of a new 28,000-square-foot circus school and training studio at the former home of St. Madeleine Sophie Church (6452 Greene Street) in West Mt. Airy. Students from the tristate region will soar to new heights in the sanctuary that boasts 40 foot tall ceilings, original brilliant stained glass windows and an observation gallery. One hundred weekly classes will be offered for adults and children, from beginner to advanced students, in aerials, juggling, unicycling, tightwire, tumbling, acrobatics and physical conditioning. The new facility will also be home to the history-making Circadium School of Contemporary Circus—the first state-licensed vocational circus school in the United States (www.circadium.com). Grand opening festivities for both schools will take place on Friday, September 15 through Sunday, September 17, 2017. The weekend will include a SEPTA circus take-over, free performances, a ribbon cutting ceremony and free circus workshops. Sign-ups for the free activities, a full roster of fall classes and a list of coming events are now all posted at www.phillycircus.com. Students and parents can learn more about Philadelphia School of Circus Arts by calling 215-849-1911. “After 17 years of operations, and an exhaustive property search, we are finally able to say we have realized a dream,” said PSCA and Circadium Executive Director Shana Kennedy. “We have gone from one-on-one classes in my home to becoming the regional center for all things circus arts. We are proud to grow, expand and enter new territory at the same time as the region’s interest in circus arts continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Circus arts are now ingrained in the fabric of our region’s arts and culture community. We are proud to have helped make that happen and we look forward to the opportunity to help define what circus means to a whole new generation.” Shana and Greg Kennedy purchased St. Madeleine Sophie Church and the two-acre property surrounding the church for $1.2M. Their purchase includes the sanctuary and gymnasium, school building, a non-occupied home, and a portico/gatehouse. The grounds feature expansive green space that may be used for outdoor classes, performances and a potential circus festival. Students and guests will enjoy free parking in the 55 car parking lot behind the church off of West Cliveden Street. The property also offers direct access from Center City and Chestnut Hill via the SEPTA Upsal station located just feet from the school’s main entrance. After a multi-year search, the final sale of the property was completed on September 1, 2017. Light renovations began in August (during a special lease engagement) with the final renovations and installation of circus equipment ready for classes in early September. By grand opening weekend on September 15-17, 2017 all classes for both schools will be up and officially running. PSCA offices will also open officially by mid-September. Renovations are expected to total around $80,000 for phase one. Philadelphia School of Circus Arts invites the region to celebrate the new circus school with a weekend of free workshops, performances and tours. Farewell Amelia Mary: Long Time Looking

DR. KENNETH J. MARTIN

Meet 89-Year-Old Author H.J. Worthington at Narberth Bookshop September 24 .J. Worthington has led what many would call a “normal” life. He has been a husband, father of six, grandfather of nine, accountant and a veteran. He has also embraced storytelling and has never been one to claim. “It’s too late to go after a dream.” Now at 89, Worthington has realized one of his greatest dreams: he is a first-time literary author with his book Farewell Amelia Mary: Long Time Looking (Shorehouse Books, 2017). “I didn’t do this for fame or fortune,” Worthington acknowledges. “The stories and offerings in this book are from the

I have told the stories to the generations after me, but I wanted there to be a written history. I designed the book this way so readers could visualize what I saw through the years,” he noted. “The book invites them into my life and history–which is a glimpse of the world and all that was going on in the world. CITY SUBURBAN NEWS – Your Community Paper for 33 Years!

ommunity Arts Center is holding its 15th annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, September 23, 2017, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Park Avenue in Swarthmore, PA. This free family event gives festival-goers the opportunity to purchase high quality original art directly from over 60 local and regional artists and also includes artist demonstrations, an art raffle, kids’ activities, live music, great food, and local non-profit booths. Proceeds from the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, as well as The Taste of the Town September 21 dining fundraiser held in conjunction with the Festival, will support programs at the non-profit Community Arts Center in Wallingford, PA. CAC’s Fine Arts and Crafts Festival selects participating exhibitors through a jury process and presents original (no mechanical reproductions) art and craft work in watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, mixed media, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, pastel, photography, pottery, printmaking, and sculpture. Attendees can meet and buy art directly from the over 60 participating artists plus get a look at art in the making with artist demos by local artists, including: a Felt Mask Workshop by Ali Dworsack at 12 p.m., Zentangle Drawing with Marie Simons at 10 p.m., and Gnome Home Ceramics Workshop with Brad Hagmayer at 2 p.m. The festival features a variety of live music throughout the day with performances by local musicians: 10:30 a.m. – Gerry Getz, solo singer-songwriter; 11:45 a.m. – Out of Order, Americana; 1 p.m. – Rose Weathers; 1 p.m. – Cornerstones, acoustic music, stripped down roots; 3 p.m. – SwUkestra, Swarthmore Ukulele Orchestra; 4.p.m. – Last Chance, folk duo. Festival attendees can also get information on local non-profit and community efforts. Participating non-profits include The Helen Kate Furness Library, Media Chamber Chorale, and Art Goes to School. With a tie-dying table and children’s activity tables, the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival is fun for the whole family! Volunteers will be on hand to help little ones explore art and create a craft to take home. Throughout the day, there’s also the opportunity to purchase food from the Swarthmore Co-Op (outdoor grill and indoor prepared foods) as well as from restaurants in town. Additionally, prior to Saturday’s Festival, Friends of the Festival can attend the Taste of the Town fundraiser on September 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the CAC’s Duke Gallery, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford. With the purchase of a $75 ticket, guests can enjoy an open wine and beer bar and live music by the Jeff Knoettner Trio (jazz) while they sample delicious food from all the best restaurants from towns surrounding Community Arts Center including Aria Mediterranean Cuisine, Ariano, Broad Table Tavern at the Inn at Swarthmore, Burlap and Bean West End Roast House, Hobbs, The Icery, Jeffrey Miller Catering, Margaret Kuo’s Media, Scooped Ice Cream, Shere-e-Punjab, Swarthmore Co-Op, Swarthmore Pizza, and Yia It’s All Greek to Me! At the end of the night, guests can vote on their favorite foods and help one lucky winner take home the title of Best of the Fest!
