Rodgers & Hammerstein’s American classic, “South Pacific,” weaves together tales of romance, duty and valor to bring audiences a hilarious, heartbreaking, and thoughtprovoking Broadway musical. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a French plantation owner. At the same time, U.S. Lieutenant Cable falls for a beautiful island native named Liat. On this island of paradise, can true love survive cultural prejudices and the threat of war? The thrilling score includes “I’m Gonna Wash That Man

“CLOTHING: STORIES FROM THE CLOSET” Printmaker/Mixed Media Artist Linda Dubin Garfield’s and photographer Susan DiPronio’s public participatory installation “Clothing: Stories from the Closet” will be exhibited as part of the 2016 Philly Fringe Festival from September 8 to 24 at The Book Trader, 7 N. 2nd Street in Old City Philadelphia. Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater Unveils the “Before I Die” Interactive Wall for Philly Fringe Festival 2016

ongue & Groove, Philly’s unique spontaneous theater company, will debut a new show, “Before I Die,” for the Philly Fringe Festival, September 2016. A visual art component of the show will run simultaneous to the performance. The unveiling of this interactive art installation, Inspired by the international “Before I Die” mural movement, will take place on Thursday, September 8, 6:30 p.m., at The Front Street Cafe, 1253 N. Front St, and is free to the public. “Before I Die” Interactive Chalkboard Mural in Fishtown We all have a bucket list, even if we don’t know it yet! Tongue & Groove asks you to give it some thought right now: what is your Before I Die… wall. The chalkboard is free to the public—any passerby true heart’s desire — what do you want to can add their hopes and dreams to the mural just by picking up the do or say or be before you die? T&G’s concept for their performance is based on artist Candy Chang’s international movement of interactive “Before I Die” chalkboards in which passers-by are invited to add to the collaborative mural (beforeidie.cc) by filling in the phrase, Before I Die I want to ______. T&G will collect responses both from the BID Wall and from audience members at the theater, and incorporate them into their spontaneously generated show. The chalkboard is free to the public—any passerby can add their hopes and dreams to the mural just by picking up the provided colorful chalk. The chalkboard will be located in Fishtown on a sidewalk-facing brick wall surrounding the beer garden area of the funky farm-to-table Front St. Cafe, on N. Front and W. Thompson Streets (www.frontstreetcafe.net). Thursday, September 8, 6:30 p.m. – The Unveiling The “Before I Die” wall will be officially unveiled on September 8 (though it will be up for several days previous). The event is designed to attract people to the wall and encourage them to fill the mural with their hopes and dreams. The highlight of the event is a performance by Unidos da Filadelfia, Philly’s premier samba school. The rousing Brazilian drums of Unidos never fail to lift people’s spirits and attract attention from afar. T&G is hoping that the entire neighborhood will come out, enjoy the music, add to the wall, enjoy the fresh and friendly farm-to-table food & drink at Front St Cafe & Beer Garden, and learn about Tongue & Groove and its collaborators, Paradigm Art Gallery and Front Street Cafe. The wall will remain installed throughout the Fringe Festival (through September). “Before I Die” Performances in Center City At the performances, Tongue & Groove asks the audience to anonymously write on a card their response to ‘Before I Die I Want To _______.’ Those submissions – plus random submissions from the wall itself – will inspire the ensemble’s instant creation of unscripted scenes and monologues, both hilarious and heartbreaking. BMFI S CREENING OF “T HE P HILADELPHIA S TORY ” S EPTEMBER 15 atharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart match wits in this Academy Awardwinning romantic comedy about the disruption of a socialite’s impending wedding caused by the simultaneous arrival of her ex-husband looking to rekindle their flame and a tabloid magazine journalist on the hunt for both a story and possible love. “The Philadelphia Story” is part of BMFI’s 2016 film series: 90 Years of Films in Bryn Mawr. Variously known as the Seville Theater, the Bryn Mawr Theater, and Bryn Mawr Film Institute, the building located at 824 West Lancaster Avenue has been home to film in Bryn Mawr for 90 years. BMFI celebrates this rich cinematic history with a nine-month long series that will feature films from the theater’s past, one screening a month for every decade of its existence. Set in the Main Line and starring Bryn Mawr College’s most famous alumna, it’s no wonder that the Bryn Mawr Theater chose to revive “The Philadelphia Story” in 1972 as a complement to Pat and Mike during a week devoted to Katharine Hepburn. Shown in conjunction with a Cinema Classics Seminar, “The Philadelphia Story” will be introduced by the seminar’s instructor, Alice Bullitt, M.A. “The Philadelphia Story” will show on Thursday, September 15, at 7:15 p.m. at Bryn Mawr Film Institute. Regarding her work, Brennan states, “I start with a mark, simple and straightforward, but then there is another, a splotch of color, and some scraping. The tools are uncomplicated but as in any interaction it is the relationship where the intricacy begins. The drawing itself is the experience that invites the viewer to share in the conversation.” A reception to meet the artist will be September 25, from 1:30 to 4:30. The public is invited.

Beginning Sunday, September 11, at 1 p.m., Rabbi Moshe Brennan of Chabad of Penn Wynne will conduct the 3 sessions of the new course, “Read it in Hebrew” at the Kaiserman JCC, 45 Haverford Road, Wynnewood. “Many people feel lost in synagogue, because they don’t know how to read Hebrew,” explains Rabbi Levi Kaplan of JLI’s headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. “We have found that learning how to read Hebrew strengthens one’s feeling of connection to Judaism in a powerful way. ‘Read it in Hebrew’ fills a tremendous need.” Already a hit with communities around the world, “Read it in Hebrew” has been tried successfully in over 150 Chabad Houses, camps, and schools enabling over 1,000 students to read Hebrew. The first lesson of “Read it in Hebrew” focuses on the letters of the Hebrew alphabet while the following two lessons introduce vowels and teach students how to read words. With flashcards portraying the letters alongside catchy mnemonics that make the information memorable and easy to digest, “Read in Hebrew” allows students to absorb information quickly and efficiently. “Read it in Hebrew” utilizes a timeless teaching method espoused by the Jewish sages for generations. In addition to reading skills, students get a glimpse into the holiness and depth of the Hebrew language, including brief kabalistic explanations of the Hebrew letters. “Finally, a fun and easy-to-use program that teaches Jews how to read in the language their ancestors, exclaims Rabbi Moshe Brennan, the local instructor in Wynnewood. “If you want to participate in synagogue but find it hard to follow what’s going on, this is for you. Longtime Competitive Aquatics Director will Represent the Region at the September Global Event ouis Petto, director of competitive aquatics at Upper Main Line YMCA, will coach the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team in Rio in September 2016. Held immediately after the Olympic Games, the Paralympics is an elite competition among athletes with a range of physical disabilities. Petto is the only person chosen from our region to coach at this international event. He will coach his first Paralympics as member of the US Olympic Committee for Team USA. “The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is definitely pleased to be able to have one of our own participating on the world stage in this way,” said CEO Denise L. Day. “This is a marvelous achievement for Coach Lou. Our team is dedicated to developing every child, of every ability, at every level, and Coach Lou is an example of that. We couldn’t be prouder.” U.S. Paralympics is a division of the United States Olympic Committee. Paralympic swimming competition is open to male and female athletes with physical disabilities such as dwarfism, amputation/ limb loss, blindness/visual impairment, spinal cord injury/wheelchairusers, cerebral palsy/brain injury/stroke, cognitive impairment and Les autres. Griswold went on to win bronze in the S9 100m backstroke at the 2014 Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships, and bronze in the S8 400m freestyle at the IPC Swimming Championship in 2015. Petto said he wants to build on that kind of momentum, and his time in Rio will help. “I’m looking forward to continuing to learn from this opportunity and to bring back my experiences to Upper Main Line YMCA,” Petto said. The Upper Main Line YMCA is a branch of YMCA of Greater Brandywine, an association of seven YMCAs that offer lifechanging programs for children, families and adults throughout Chester County.

Chris Rabb, entrepreneur, author, teacher, and social activist, will explore this question with host Hugh Taft-Morales, Leader, Philadelphia Ethical Society, at 7 p.m. Monday, September 12, at 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square. Rabb will focus on poverty, race, and other structural roadblocks to business success, echoing insights from his book, “Invisible Capital: How Invisible Forces Shape Entrepreneurial Opportunity.” Q&A with the audience will follow his presentation. The program, the 5th in Ethics on the Square’s Capitalism in Crisis series, is free and open to the public. Chris Rabb is a writer, consultant, teacher and thought leader at the intersection of entrepreneurship, media, civic engagement and social identity. Until recently, he served as an affiliated faculty member of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, and adjunct professor at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. He is currently running as an independent-minded Democratic candidate for the 200th legislative district representing Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill. A graduate of Yale College, Rabb worked in the U.S. Senate as a legislative aide and as a writer, researcher, and trainer for the White House Conference on Small Business. For ten years, he served as a board member for a family-owned newspaper business in Baltimore founded by his great-great grandfather over 120 years ago. Rabb’s book, “Invisible Capital: How Unseen Forces Shape Entrepreneurial Opportunity,” explores the landscape of mod-

He has also appeared on MSNBC’s “Up w/ Chris Hayes” and “Your Business” with host JJ Ramberg. Chris lives with his sons in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. Dr. Rosalie Mirenda, Neumann President, to Retire June 2017 r. Rosalie M. Mirenda, Neumann University’s longest-serving president, will retire on June 30, 2017. She became president in 1996 and is in her twenty-first year at the helm of the University. In an August 1 letter to the University community, Dr. Mirenda wrote, “Together with my husband and family, I thought and prayed at length about this decision. The Good Lord has shown us in many ways that now is the right time for this transition for us and for our beloved Neumann University.” In the letter which was sent to faculty, staff and students, she expressed confidence in Neumann’s future: “Our leadership team is strong. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education reaffirmed our accreditation and commended our self-study process. Our University trustees are the most wonderful of people; they are courageous leaders with the acumen to continue to guide the institution to new and greater heights. The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, as they have for more than 50 years, continue their sponsorship and support of Neumann and its Catholic Franciscan identity and mission.” James Delaney, Chair of the University Board of Trustees, wrote to the University community on the same day. “On behalf of the entire University Board of Trustees, I express my deep gratitude to Dr. Mirenda for her exceptional leadership of and unwavering devotion to Neumann University,” he said. Delaney praised Dr. Mirenda as “a tireless advocate and savvy visionDr. Rosalie M. Mirenda, Neumann University’s ary for Neumann University while never taking her eye off its Catholic longest-serving president, will retire on Franciscan identity.” June 30, 2017. During Dr. Mirenda’s presidency, Neumann has grown from a commuter college of fewer than 900 students to a residential university of almost 3,000, annual and capital giving has increased, the campus has expanded from 14 to 68 acres, new academic programs have been added at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, athletic teams have grown from 9 to 24, and state of the art residence halls were built to accommodate 700 students. She led the multi-year effort that culminated with Neumann achieving university status in April 2009. “The Board is in the process of formalizing the search process to select Dr. Mirenda’s successor,” Delaney explained. “I will oversee the search committee that will be representative of our trustees, alumni, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, faculty, staff, and students. This committee, to be co-led by two experienced trustees, will review and interview candidates who respond to our search and recommend finalist(s) to the Board of Trustees for final approval and recommendation to the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for their affirmation.” Dr. Mirenda’s letter expressed her gratitude for the privilege of serving as Neumann’s President. “I prayed daily for strength and wisdom to handle with integrity and authenticity the responsibility I viewed as vocation,” she wrote. “I have been and continue to be inspired by the goodness of our students, the talents of our faculty and staff, and the knowledge and generosity of colleagues across the campus, the region, and our Church. Most especially, I am inspired by our Catholic Franciscan identity—the rock on which Neumann University and my leadership has stood.” She has served on many boards, including the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, the PA Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, Seton Hall University, Archmere Academy, Holy Child Academy, and the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. Recently, she served on the board of the World Meeting of Families 2015, Inc., and served as Chair of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary’s Task Force on College, which completed its work in June 2013. She was appointed by the late Bishop Joseph McFadden to the Ex Corde Ecclesiae Working Group for the Committee on Catholic Education of the U.S. Conference of Bishops. Neumann University, through Dr. Mirenda’s efforts, spearheaded the formation of the Drexel Neumann Academy in Chester, PA, now celebrating its 10th year. Dr. Mirenda has been recognized by a number of organizations for her steadfast faith, distinguished character and numerous accomplishments. She received the Gary Papa Award (2013) from the Delaware County Community Foundation, the Sons of Italy Distinguished Achievement Award (2013), the Sourin Award (2012) from the Catholic Philopatrian Society, the Catholic Graduate Hall of Fame Award (2011) from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the Woman on the Move Award (2011) from Main Line Times, The Keys and Sword Award (2011) from Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, and the Catholic Leadership Institute Award (2010). She also received the Outstanding Alumnus Award (2006) from Widener University, the Pontifical Honor of the Cross, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (2003), and the Nursing Alumna Award (1999) from Villanova University. In 2005, Dr. Mirenda was awarded the honorary degree from Saint Charles Seminary. Dr. Mirenda earned her Ph.D. from Widener University, her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania, and her B.S. in Nursing from Villanova University. She has been married to Anthony D. Mirenda for over 50 years. They have three children and five grandchildren.

C AROL W ISKER ’ S E XHIBIT “H OSTS : L IFE , D EATH + THE A BSURD ” August 31 - October 2, 2016 he 3rd Street Gallery, in Old City Philadelphia, celebrates its 38th year with a solo installation exhibition by Philadelphia artist, Carol Wisker who is also participating in this year’s Philadelphia Fringe Festival. In addition to First Friday events on September 2, from 5 - 9 p.m., an Artist’s reception will take place on September 11, from 1 - 4 p.m. with music by Jazz Musician WOZ, Paul Wozniki. “Hosts: Life, Death and the Absurd,” Carol Wisker’s sculptural installations, use fiber and textiles combined with furniture, mannequins and mundane objects to express her interests in contemporary social concerns, science and politics. Rendered with emotion and wit, Wisker has been influenced by the sculptures of Dorothea Tanning and the fantasy paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, making skillfully crafted, multi-media installations that memorialize human and environmental loss, explore bioscience and feminism and as well as poking fun at the visual arts world. The soft, seductive sculptural surfaces created from individual medallions of raw natural cotton have become Wisker’s signature media over the past six years. With this material she forms thick, dense surfaces that serve as casings for a myriad of repetitive objects, such as spent bullets, metal mechanical fittings, silk cocoons or pieces of rubber tubing. Manufactured in India, the material is cut from bundled cotton fiber cording, a textile typically used to line the interiors of domestic decorative objects. Utilizing the cotton cording in a new way, not as a hidden lining, but as an external covering, she exposes its soft texture. Using it as a “skin” for her carefully chosen objects, Wisker makes an analogy to the surface of the body, clothing or to surfaces in nature. The Gallery environment is quieted by the absorption of sound by the sculptures’ thick surfaces but then is augmented by the original recorded sonic explorations of experimental musicians Jacob Brunner and Jim Strong. The duo will also perform at the Gallery on Saturday, September 17, from 8 - 9 p.m. following Wisker’s artist talk at 7 p.m. In addition, on September 21, from 7 - 8:30 there will be related poetry readings by the Montco Poets’ Wordshop. 3rd Street Gallery, an artist-run fine arts gallery, opened in 1978 on the corner of 3rd and Bainbridge in South Philadelphia and since has shown the work of thousands of Philadelphia artists. The current members are multigenerational, have advanced degrees in the arts as well as the sciences, work in diverse media and include artists who are award-winners and those whose work is collected by museums as well as in corporate and private collections. 3rd Street Gallery is located at 45 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia PA 19106, across from the Arden Theater.
