isit Bartram’s Garden (5400 Lindbergh Blvd.) this summer to see a new feature: the Ann Bartram Carr Garden, the only 19th-century flower garden in Philadelphia. The Ann Bartram Carr Garden is the result of a transformative $2.7-million project and marks the first major garden restoration at Bartram’s Garden in nearly a century. Bar tram’s Garden, including the new Ann Bartram Carr Garden, is free to those who wish to explore on their own from dawn to dusk. Bartram’s Garden is open year-round, with the exception of City-observed holidays. The Ann Bartram Carr Garden creates a welcoming new entrance as Bartram’s Garden takes its place as a premier river destination in the city. The arrival of the Bartram’s Mile trail, a project led by the City of Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation and the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, and the Garden’s growing presence as a destination for the Southwest Philadelphia community, provides more than 50,000 Philadelphians with access to nature and recreation each year. Located to the west of the historic 1731 John Bartram House, the Ann Bartram Carr Garden was established as an exhibition garden by Ann and her husband, Colonel Robert Carr. It was also the first public green space at Bartram’s Garden, showcasing fashionable exotics that the Carrs imported from Asia as well as Ann’s own hybrid dahlias and camellias. In the new garden, visitors will also be able to enjoy latticed cross vine and passionflower, boxwood-edged beds, roses, peonies, nicotiana, and bright bedding annuals to provide color all summer long.

ARTS, CULTURE & SOCIETY EVENTS Villanova University Art Gallery Showcases Area Sculptor George Nista’s Work in “Pursuing Beauty” n its first exhibit of the 2016-2017 academic year, the Villanova Art Gallery will showcase the work of George Nista, a Philadelphia-area sculptor whose masterful explorations of the human figure will be collected under the title “Pursuing Beauty.” The show opens Monday, August 8. Refreshments will be served. Convenient on-campus parking is available. The exhibit continues to October 6. Included in “Pursuing Beauty” will be Nista’s best-known sculpture, “Paradise Lost,” a three-quarter-life size sculpture in bronze. “Paradise Lost” depicts the moment in Milton’s epic poem of the same name when Lucifer, the most beautiful of the angels, is cast out of heaven. Lucifer is inverted, captured mid-fall, every muscle engaged—a violent change of circumstance depicted with power and grace. The figure’s immense, intricate wings extend above and below him, with the entire cantilevered form supported from the tip of one wing. The figure’s wings are an element that Nista employs in many of his sculptures, and though the viewer may perceive them as angelic, the sculptor is careful to clarify that these figures are not, in fact, angels: “They’re metaphors for some transcendence of the human condition or some ideal of the human condition; in other words, man fully realized.” George Nista’s “Summer,” Many of Nista’s sculptures present an ideColored Pencil, 16" x 20". alized human form. He enjoys working with dancers, whose musculature and mastery of their own physicality often results in a collaborative discovery of theme. Of course, not all of Nista’s subjects are dancers. Some of his most striking pieces are portraits, the subject’s essence captured in a thoughtful expression or a whimsical smile. At the heart of all his work is Nista’s interest in beauty and how it is expressed through the human body: “I think the body – every body – expresses [beauty] naturally. Anybody can have a beautiful moment that expresses the whole human condition. Discovering that moment provides the excitement in what I do.” George Nista’s artistic career has been a journey of continual discovery. As a boy in Hamden, CT, he was always drawing. He earned a BA in fine art from Catholic University of America, then went on to earn an MFA at the Pratt Institute in New York, NY. He also completed most of a MS Ed degree from Southern Connecticut State University. In those years, Nista was creating large, abstract, kinetic sculptures, both architectural and mechanical in nature. After moving from New York, NY to Philadelphia, Nista taught high school art while pursuing his own work. He found himself unfulfilled by kinetic sculpture and began to transition to other kinds of 3D art, especially set design for theatre and film. In 1984, Nista’s wife suggested he take a drawing course at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA). That course would lead to a full four years of study in PAFA’s certificate program, and the feeling of fulfillment that he had been seeking. During his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Nista won the Ward Traveling Fellowship, the Stewartson Prize, and several other awards. Now retired from teaching, Nista’s decades as an instructor included 22 years at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, teaching a wide variety of courses from sculpture to 3D design, to environmental (set) design. He has also taught at Drexel University, PAFA, and the New York Academy of Art’s Graduate School of Figurative Art. The Villanova University Art Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. For extended and weekend hours, and information, contact the Art Gallery at 610-519-4612, or visit www.artgallery.villanova.edu.

Fort Mifflin was built by the British in 1771 to protect the wealthy colonial city of Philadelphia, but the most common question Fort Mifflin associates hear is “…why did they build the Fort so close to the Airport?” Enjoy guided tours to learn why this location was selected for the Fort, and how it now shares the space with the busy, 21st century Philadelphia International Airport. Discover the basic principles of aviation and make your own FPG-9 glider, check off all the different aircraft on our “Spotter’s Guide,” listen to the pilots talk to the control tower and “Meet the Pilot and Flight Crew” who will share what it is like to work over 30,000 feet above ground! Discover why the planes take off and land in the patterns we are familiar with. Be sure to bring your camera so that you can check out all the photo “sweet spots” on top of Fort Mifflin’s walls, taking photos that will amaze your friends and Instagram followers! Guided tours and cannon demonstrations. Bring a picnic to enjoy in our shaded, riverfront picnic area! Free parking. Society can create a picture of what the world should be, but you should create the picture for yourself.” He added, “This show is not like any other Gershwin show. en years ago, Dr. Brigette Erwin launched her one-person Anxiety and OCD Center in Exton, PA, as a pioneering private Philadelphia-area practice offering treatment for anxiety and related disorders based on medical research rather than more conventional psychological approaches. Since then, the medical university-trained cognitive behavioral psychologist and mother of six has built the Center into a specialized, leading edge practice posting strong quality-of-life outcomes for a growing number of children and adults suffering from moderate to severe levels of anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and related disorders. To ensure that her practice will continue to “grow and flourish,” in accommodating the growing numbers of patients and corporate clients, Dr. Erwin announces the Center’s move to larger quarters at 270 West Lancaster Avenue in Malvern, PA. Scheduled to open on August 1, the new facility will offer an expanded staff of licensed psychologists and post-doctoral residents intensively trained in medical evidence-based treatment. “Currently,” she says, “we are drawing clients from a 50-mile radius and nationally from specialized inpatient anxiety disorder treatment hospitals.” In the Philadelphia area, these include Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, and the Main Line Health System. “By standard patient improvement measurements, as well as by patient retention and outside referrals, the Center’s treatment performance is excellent,” says Dr. Erwin. of the world-class concert cellist, Zuill Bailey, who will join the group for a rendition of the Kol Nidrei by Bruch. This concert will be the grand finale of two separate week-long workshops for adult amateur cellists. The entire cello choir under the direction of Conductor/Arranger Gary Fitzgerald, and organized by the new Artistic Director, Kenneth Law, will perform works by Bach, Puccini, Schubert, Kabalevsky, Beethoven, Villa Lobos, and others. This event will also mark the first year that Cellospeak’s founder Dorothy Amarandos has turned over the position of Artistic Director to Kenneth Law, a consummate teacher and well-known cello performer who is, currently also Director of The Main Street Music Studios in Fairfax, VA. Undertaking Cellospeak on top of his rigorous schedule of concertizing and teaching has been a major challenge, but a welcome one, which he has accepted with zeal. Ms. Amarandos started Cellospeak in 2000 as a one-week workshop in rural Virginia with just 13 of her local adult cello students. She was 75 years old at the time, and had already had a lifelong career as a cello performer, teacher and entrepreneur. Under her inspiring and energetic leadership, Cellospeak has since become a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation with a devoted membership of adult amateur cellists from all over the country. Cellospeak’s Annual Cello Workshops now extend over two weeks and are attended by over 100 students and served by over 16 professional teachers each summer, bringing adult cello students and faculty together from the four corners of the nation to immerse themselves in an extraordinary musical experience. They express their love of the cello by playing, studying and performing in coached ensembles and in Cellospeak’s signature choir. The workshops offer participants the opportunities not only to improve their technical skills, gain exposure to diverse teaching styles, and perform in nightly recitals, but also to create lifelong friendships with others who share a passion for the life-affirming power of music. August 5 concert is free, but contributions ($10 suggested) are gratefully accepted. Visit www.cellospeak.org for info about Cellospeak.

Says Bartram’s Garden Executive Director Maitreyi Roy, “To me, Ann Bartram Carr remains important because she opened Bartram’s Garden up to the general public and spread the importance of horticulture and open spaces—ideals that are still dear to us 200 years later. She was also one of the first women to run a gardening business in our young nation, carrying on until 1850. Ann taught her visitors and customers about the need for beautiful plants and open spaces in their lives, paralleling a time when heavy industry was blossoming in the Philadelphia area.” “This new garden reconnects us to the Bartram spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation,” adds Maitreyi. “It further complements recent improvements to the National Historic Landmark Bartram House, which received a new roof, geothermal climate control systems, and historic features this past winter.” To celebrate the opening of the Ann Bartram Carr Garden, new guided tours of the house and garden will highlight critical conservation work as well the Bartram’s Mile project that will eventually connect Bartram’s Garden with the Schuylkill River Trail and revolutionize access between Southwest Philadelphia and Center City. Tours are offered Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. until December. Bartram’s Garden welcomes everyone to explore, connect to nature, participate in programs, celebrate personal journeys, relax, reflect, and experience something new.The grounds are free and open to the public year-round, dawn to dusk, except on City-observed holidays. Celebrating this exciting artistic partnership are, from left – Rachel Ammon, Director of Communications, Main Line Arts Center; Stephanie Steiner Nicholson, Artist; Anastasia Babayeva and Denis Gronostayskiy, Artistic Directors of the Academy of International Ballet in Media, PA. he Academy of International Ballet (AIB) in Media, PA, announces a creative partnership with the Main Line Art Center (MLAC) in Haverford, PA. The new partnership offers faculty, students, guest artists and visitors to the Academy a unique opportunity to view original paintings created by regional artists that focus on the images from the world of ballet. Each painting on exhibit will offer the guest artist high visibility in a dedicated location within a classical ballet academy to share their vision of classical ballet and to promote the fusion of the visual arts and the performing arts. In the words of AIB Artistic Directors Anastasia Babayeva and Denis Gronostayskiy, “With the support of Main Line Art Center we will now offer an ongoing exhibit program that will allow us to link the past with the present and the future through a never ending display of what we value as precious and important.” Ms. Babayeva added, “We believe ballet academies should be open to exhibit and promote art work that is focused on and promotes the enduring beauty of ballet. Each work on exhibit adds value and inspiration to every visitor to our academy, to the artist on display and to the traditions of ballet.” Main Line Art Center is an anchor cultural institution where people can discover, create, and experience visual art. A frequent recipient of Best of Awards for its beautiful galleries and high-quality art instruction, the Art Center’s visual art classes and contemporary and innovative exhibitions stimulate creativity, conversation, and joy. The mission of Main Line Art Center is to inspire and engage people of all ages, abilities, and economic means in visual art through education, exhibitions, and experiences. This exciting partnership allows their artists new opportunities to share the visual arts with the ballet community. On exhibit until September 1, 2016 is a pastel entitled “Pointe Shoes” by regionally recognized artist Ms. Stephanie Steiner Nicholson. Ms. Nicholson is a portrait painter specializing in pastels. She is also a printmaker and illustrator. She received her BFA in painting from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts in 2002 and exhibits her work with the Delaware Valley Art League. Stephanie’s portraits in pastel capture the joy of the chosen subject’s spirit in a celebration of light and color. You may visit Ms. Nicholson’s creations at http://stephanienicholsonstudio.co. The Streets of Philadelphia: Philly Streets Followed by Philly Treats Philadelphia’s streets are as varied as her residents. Whether big and busy boulevards, quiet tree-lined lanes, or gray back alleys with asphalt as weathered as the old brick row homes that line them, each of our city’s streets bears a story all its own. Many of those stories end at the same figurative stop sign, however. From Shippen Lane to Gratz Street, Rittenhouse Square to Wayne Avenue, their namesake and extended family origins now rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Attend this twilight trip through Laurel Hill – Philadelphia’s ultimate dead end – to learn more about how the roads upon which we live and travel earned their place on the map. The tour will take place on Wednesday, July 27 at 6 p.m., departing from Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Gatehouse entrance at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. Free parking is located in the lot across the street from the Gatehouse. The cost is $20/person; or $18/students and seniors. Reservations are suggested. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.thelaurelhillcemetery.org.
