Bill D’Agostino and directed by Matt Silva. This all-new mystery surrounds the stolen magical holly plant that helps Santa and his reindeer navigate the globe on Christmas night. When the holly is stolen, Christmas is once again in danger. Mrs. Claus calls Murray the Elf to Toyland .... but he’ll need the kids’ help to solve the case! Every year since 2012, Act II has produced a new Murray the Elf mystery. Due to new commitments by the creative team, this will be the final mystery. “After five years, Murray is hanging up his detective badge, notebook, and tights,” D’Agostino said. “But he’s going out with his biggest adventure yet!” This new mystery is D’Agostino’s ninth original comedy for kids produced in the last six seasons in theatres around Philadelphia. Will Dennis once again plays Murray the Elf. As in the previous years, Andy Shaw plays all of the other characters, including returning favorites Candy Kane, Humphrey the Penguin, and Mrs. Claus. In the previous four mysteries, Shaw played more than 12 characters. New characters played by Shaw this year include the Easter Bunny, a lightening-fast Gingerbread Man, and a millennial elf named Jingle. Tickets for “Murray the Elf and the Case of the Horrible Holly Heist” are $12-$16. Tickets are available online at http://www.act2.org, by calling the Act II Playhouse box office at 215654-0200, or in person at 56 E. Butler Avenue in Ambler. “Murray the Elf” mysteries are approximately one-hour long, and are designed for kids ages four and up. No knowledge of the previous mysteries is needed to enjoy this year’s show. The production team for “Murray the Elf and the Case of the Horrible Holly Heist” includes Colin McIlvaine (Scenic Design), Courtney Boches (Costume Design), Amanda Coffin (Lighting Design), Mikal Odom (Sound Design), Lauren Davenport (Production Assistant), and Carrie Nielsen (Dramaturg).

of School for Academic Program at Friends’ Central, who spoke about cultural identity and holding onto one’s identity while navigating their larger, diverse community communities. Her speech was punctuated by an activity that asked participants to write something – an object or word – that describes their background on a balloon. Dwight Dunston, Assistant Director of Admission and Friends’ Central senior Simone Gibson welcomed alumnus of Friends’ Central, explained, “After writing on their balloons, each person lifted the balloons into the air, illus- over 100 faculty and students from public, private, and trating how we bring our identity and our culture to our schools and communities and how we hold a piece of someone else’s parochial schools across the greater Philadelphia region culture, of who they are, each day.” The conference was timed to take place shortly after the to the 2nd Annual Diversity Conference on Saturday, election, which was a hot topic of discussion this year. Through thoughtful discussions and participation in workshops like November 12. Gibson created Social Justice and Sports, The LGBTQ Community’s Story in the conference in 2015 to America, Respectability Politics, Black Men and the Media, help students and teachers and Racial and Ethnic Labels in the US, attendees were given discuss important topics in the tools needed to continue these conversations and exerrace relations. cises at their respective schools in order to educate and advocate for change in their own communities. Art Hall, Upper School Principal, commented, “The big conference takeaway was that it allowed for candid discussions, which served as a platform for growth, progress, and civil discourse. Postelection, the conference allowed students to process their thoughts around feeling marginalized, taking those feelings and flipping them so students could move into methods of empowerment. The legacy that Simone leaves behind will last for years to come.” Upper School Dean of Students Tom MacFarlane also shared, “We owe it all to the vision and sheer will power of our amazing Simone! She was right that there is a need for an event like this, and I feel like we have something now that we can sustain and continue to develop in the coming years. Simone perfectly exemplified the difference that a single student can make.” 11 at 2 p.m. An open-captioned performance in Spanish will be held on Wednesday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. “It’s about the everyday magic of love and generosity,” says the show’s author Continued from front page and director, Jennifer Childs. “The Carols is set in the past but it’s not a history lesson—it’s very much about what’s happening in our world right now, where groups of people, small and large, are finding common ground in their dreams of what their lives, and the world, can be—while war and strife seem to lurk at every corner. The show takes the theme of Dickens’ work in several different directions. It’s not just about one man and his money, it’s about how we collectively help others get ‘unstuck’ from their troubles, and how we find ourselves helped in return. The Christmas miracle and the nostalgia of it all are still there, but it’s a living nostalgia for the interactions we have with people every day. The Carols offers a glimpse into the world of possibility right outside our doors. Dickens summarized this connection perfectly when he wrote, ‘…there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good-humor.’” Lance Kniskern, Christopher Colucci, and Drew Billiau return to 1812 as scenic, sound, and lighting designers, respectively, creating the classic look and atmosphere of a 1940’s-era VFW hall. Three-time Barrymore Award winner Janus Stefanowicz joins the production team as costume designer. 1812 veteran choreographer Karen Getz completes the production team. “The Carols” is presented as part of The Phoebe and Otto Premiere Series sponsored by Wyncote Foundation. Production support has been kindly received from Independence Foundation. “The Carols” welcomes honorary producers Sharon and Jeff Weiss.

Bach’s six cantatas for the twelve days of Christmas, now known as the Christmas Oratorio. It is an Oratorio because there is an Evangelist who narrates the story taken from the accounts of the birth of Christ from the four

Gospels. J.S. Bach here at the height of his creative powers: he has already composed his St. John and St. Matthew Passions as well as the bulk of his sacred cantatas, roughly 300 of which have survived to this day. By this point in his life, when he picks up his pen, it is to revive and perfect some older works, touch up the orchestration or tighten up some counterpoint. In fact, some of the Christmas Oratorio movements recycle material from some of his earlier secular cantatas and other presumably lost works. Rarely heard in its entirety, this historically-informed performance was first presented by Choral Arts Philadelphia in 2014. Historians have settled on 1498 as the foundation date of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle and in consequence the Vienna Boys Choir. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, at private concerts and functions, and on state occasions. The choir’s current repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Renowned Opera Star to Sing at Ardmore United Methodist Church Singing excerpts of Handel’s “Messiah” December 11 and December 24 singing “O Holy Night” urak Bilgili, internationally acclaimed opera singer, will return to Ardmore United Methodist Church as soloist in excerpts from the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah,” on Sunday, December 11 at 11 a.m. and on Saturday (Christmas Eve), December 24 at 7:30 p.m. singing “O Holy Night.” Mr. Bilgili, a native of Konya-Aksehir, Turkey, previously sang with the church’s choir as baritone-bass soloist while attending the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia where he studied under Maestro Bill Schumann. He also studied at Istanbul Mimar Sinan University, Academica Lirico Internationale in Parma and the San Francisco Opera Merola Programme. His stage debut came in 1998 when he sang Don Geronio in Rossini’s Il turco in Italia with the Turkish State Opera. In 2002, while still a student at the Academy of Vocal Arts, he made a series of house debuts throughout Europe including La Scala. Bilgili made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2004 singing Leporello in the final performance of Don Giovanni. Interviewed by Scott Simon of NPR following the performance, Simon reported Bilgili had neither a “full-stage or orchestra rehearsal” when assuming the role in the final performance. Taking his solo bow, the audience of 4000 roared in appreciation. He returned to the company in 2009 as Ferrando in Il trovatore. The winner of numerous operatic prizes, Bilgili continues to perform throughout the world with leading opera companies across Europe, North America and South America. Ardmore United Methodist Church welcomes Mr. Bilgili back together with the current church soloists and the full choir under the direction of Elizabeth Boggs, Director of Music. The public is invited to attend. Ardmore United Methodist Church is located at 200 Argyle Road, Ardmore, PA 19003. For information, call 610-649-4382.
