Western Line integration
Information on CRL’s Mt Eden rail corridor works February 2020
Managing the impacts of our construction activity Just as we did during the planning phase for our early works, we are now preparing a suite of management plans for Auckland Council approval that set out how we will manage the effects of our main construction works on people and the environment. They include specific measures to address environmental effects such as noise, vibration, traffic, air quality,
contamination, silt and sediment, groundwater and settlement.
we prepare are as effective and responsive as possible.
We are also preparing a Social Impact and Business Disruption management plan, and in doing so are seeking input from people living and working within the vicinity of our construction areas. We need to understand how people could be affected so that the management plans
We incorporate this feedback into the management plans and submit them to Council for approval. Once approved, the construction teams will work in a manner that ensures the measures outlined in these plans are in place to minimise the effects on the environment and impacts to nearby businesses and residents.

View towards Mt Eden Station redevelopment from Ruru St Extension
As part of the City Rail Link (CRL) project, the existing Mt Eden train station will be enlarged and redeveloped to incorporate a modern new station building and an additional platform for the new CRL line. The station will also remain a stop for Western Line services, making it a busy rail junction for passengers travelling to and from the city centre or connecting to other services via Newmarket.
When the CRL opens in 2024, it will provide access to two new city centre stations – Karangahape (under Karangahape Road) and Aotea (under Albert Street) – between Mt Eden and Britomart stations. Britomart will operate as a two-way through station, enabling Auckland’s rail network to double in capacity to carry up to 54,000 passengers an hour at peak times. The CRL will also provide travel time savings for many rail users. From Mt Eden, a train to Karangahape will take just three minutes, while Aotea and Britomart will be a six and nine-minute journey respectively.
Prior to 2024, significant changes need to be made in and around the rail corridor at Mt Eden to integrate the new CRL lines with the existing rail infrastructure and construct new overbridges for vehicles and/or pedestrians and cyclists. This brochure outlines the key rail and road network changes that will be made in Mt Eden for the CRL project, when construction is scheduled to occur and what sort of impacts you might expect from these works.
