HOW WE’RE WORKING WITH

K Road community Impacts and mitigations Construction generates effects such as noise, dust and vibration. Access and throughfare for people and vehicles can become restricted around a worksite. We aim to reduce the impacts on people and businesses as much as possible using management plans that help us understand how people and businesses could be affected and ensuring levels stay within acceptable guidelines. There are a variety of methods to minimise impacts, including physical barriers such as screens, hoardings, barriers and filters; timing work to happen on weekends or times of the day when people will be less affected; and construction methodology – choosing less impactful machinery, techniques and processes.

Working with the community to minimise impacts We’re working with a variety of groups representing the K Road precinct business, citizen and political communities to involve them in planning to minimise construction impacts with care and consideration.

Protective screens reduce noise and dust and can also be designed to brighten up the area around a site.

Design partnership with Mana Whenua City Rail Link’s design partnership with Mana Whenua has resulted in the incorporation of many cultural references expressed in the architectural narratives of all its stations. The Māori creation story has influenced the CRL station entrances, each telling the story of Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother. Each station entrance emphasises, through the architecture and materials, the relationship between solid earth on the ground and the sky above the entrance. The Mana Whenua design influence means all CRL stations will look like no others in the world; proudly Auckland and uniquely New Zealand.

The Community Liaison Group (CLG) Our Community Liaison Group (CLG) includes representatives from the Local Board, K Road Business Association, and residents. The group meet regularly for project updates, to review management plans and provide feedback and questions to subject matter experts and technical experts.

As a neighbouring business or resident, expect to hear from us through:

Together, we’ve planned for the utility investigation and diversion works to be carried out in a way that minimises impacts. As we move from planning to delivery, we’ll establish communication channels to share project updates and important information with the local community. We’ll also communicate more widely to promote that our neighbouring businesses are open and advise changes to road layouts. We’ll be developing a range of activities to keep the public space around construction sites bright and pleasant and support local business:

• Construction updates • Meet the Alliance events • Newsletters • Face to face information pop-ups like this one!

Other ways we’ll keep people informed:

• Hoardings can be used for aesthetic purposes and depending on site-specific factors, different materials can be used. We’ll be seeking feedback from local businesses on hoarding designs. • Business support activities – business packs, maps, directories, events and promotional campaigns will be considered as part of a support package to be developed with neighbouring businesses. • Street cleaning – daily street cleaning will be carried out around the sites to ensure all spaces around the sites are kept clean and tidy, and free of any debris.

• Hoardings – Protective barriers around work sites can also be used for information purposes. Our hoardings will be used to communicate information about the works and promote surrounding businesses as accessible and open. They will provide neighbourhood wayfinding, directing people where to go to access local businesses and services. • Wayfinding – Site wayfinding complements the wayfinding on hoardings by providing a finer level of detail, for example signs giving detour instructions for people moving around the site. • Campaigns – We’ll promote significant changes to the road layout through wider information campaigns that include social media.
