Contract awarded for Mt Eden works

A further contract for the City Rail Link (CRL) and the first for the southern end of the project has been awarded.

The contract for stormwater diversion works in Mt Eden has been awarded to the March Bessac Joint Venture.

The $16.5 million Mt Eden contract is for the construction of a new underground stormwater tunnel between Water and Nikau Streets to replace an existing pipe that will be in the way of the CRL tunnels.

It’s another milestone for the project, with work due to begin early next year in anticipation of the main tunnel and stations contract award in 2019.

The March Bessac Joint Venture contractors have extensive pipe-jacking and underground work experience in New Zealand and internationally and were chosen for a combination of their expertise, the innovation they brought to the tender and for their commercial offer.

All surface work will occur on property already owned by the project, with minimal effect on traffic.

Also starting in early 2018 are utility diversions and building canopy removal works in Albert Street, between Wellesley and Victoria Streets.

How the Commercial Bay Precinct development tunnels are looking this week

D-wall construction prepares CPO for load transfer Inside Britomart Station’s Chief Post Office building and under Lower Queen Street, contractors Downer Soletanche Bachy have now constructed 50 diaphragm walls (known as D-walls).

for the installation of large ‘collars’. The steel collars will clamp to the existing columns and transfer their loads onto the steel underpinning beams that span between the D-walls.

These walls are being excavated by the huge red piling rig named “Sandrine”, to between 16 and 20 metres deep. They are then filled with concrete and run either side of where the new train tunnels will be constructed.

Once the installation is complete, a total of 64 D-walls will be holding up the entire weight of the CPO. Structural steel beams weighing a total of 340 tonnes will be delivered to site in February 2018.

The main functions of the D-walls during CRL construction are to ensure ground water and soil don’t get into the deep open-cut tunnel excavation and to hold the entire weight of the CPO so the CRL tunnels can be built without impacting the structural integrity of the historical building.

This weight transfer from the CPO’s existing foundations on to the D-walls is done through a process called ‘underpinning’. Inside the CPO, its existing columns are being stripped and prepared

Also underway inside the CPO is the construction of jet grout columns that are able to go where Sandrine cannot. By April 2018, 77 jet grout columns of between 16m and 20m deep and 1.4m in diameter will have been constructed. They will work in conjunction with the D-walls to keep ground water out of the open cut and cover trench excavations for the tunnel construction.

C1 works will shut down between 22 December and 8 January.

First concrete poured for CRL tunnel box After almost two years and about 501,000 hours of work, the first concrete has been poured for the CRL’s tunnel box under Albert Street.

This first concrete pour was in the section beside the Auckland District Court and the Wyndham Street viewing platform at a depth of 18 metres.

The pour took almost 30 cubic metres of concrete pumped through about 56 metres of concrete hose, all the way down to the base of the excavation. The job took around four hours from start to finish.

This first concrete pour is the “blinding layer” to form a flat and smooth surface for a waterproofing membrane to be laid on top of it.

So far, 30,000 cubic metres of soil and rock have been removed from the trench, filling truck and trailer units 1,866 times.

The project has also required about 80kms of utility piping to be moved or suspended above the trench, and the two-metre-diameter main stormwater line to be broken out and re-bored approximately 10 metres to the east of its original location.

Auckland’s unusual new road From Christmas Day, anyone driving down Albert Street between Swanson and Customs Streets, will be suspended up to 16 metres in the air.

Together the concrete deck slabs weigh approximately 1339 tonnes – the equivalent to about 1860 cows or 335 elephants!

Underneath your wheels, bulldozers, diggers and shotcrete workers continue to build the CRL.

This concrete slab road is suspended over the Albert Street trench by steel struts and beams, while the excavation is carried out and the CRL tunnels formed. The slabs are supported by 68 horizontal struts and 155 supporting beams.

CRL contractors Connectus, the McConnell Dowell - Downer joint venture, have installed the last of the 201 thick concrete slabs that form the construction and public traffic deck along Albert Street. The deck allows the team to continue building the future CRL rail tunnels while traffic runs on Albert Street above.

This concrete slab road will stay in place until late 2018 when the tunnels are completed, ready for the new landscaped streetscape design.

Youth to benefit from CRL recycling initiative

To help save resources and divert waste from landfill, CRL has teamed up with the MPHS Community Trust to find new homes for bathroom fixtures and fittings that are no longer required at Britomart Station.

Re-usable items, such as hand basins, taps, partitions, mirrors, urinals, hand driers, hand rails, shower fittings, cubicles, doors and wooden benches, were removed from the old train crew bathroom facilities at Britomart before they were demolished as part of the station renovations.

The demolition team also found one item they hadn’t expected – an unused garage roller door within the walls of the station.

All the items will be on-sold at the Waitakere Transfer Station’s recycling shop, with proceeds going to the trust’s HiTech Studio, which runs a creative technology-focussed after school programme for local youth.

Albert Street northbound traffic switch From Friday 22 December, vehicles will again be able to travel northbound to the very end of Albert Street and turn left into Customs Street.

The completion of the Albert Street construction decks now allows for a continuous traffic lane to be provided on both side of the road along the full length of Albert Street. This removes the current need to divert northbound traffic along Wolfe Street and enables Wolfe to return to its original one-way configuration into Albert Street.

Albert Street traffic flow is now in a ‘steady state’ and will remain unchanged until late 2018. The set-up of Albert Street will increasingly look like this: Mills Lane
