Britomart’s new Commerce Street entrance opens PIER 3

To Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter



Trains and timetables will run as usual, as the station remains operational throughout the construction work, which is being done by our contractors Downer Soletanche Bachy.

When completed, the CRL will enable more frequent trains across the network, more direct services to the city centre and will double the number of people who can use trains at peak times. The Queen Street entrances and Chief Post Office station interior will remain closed for the next three years while the City Rail Link (CRL) tunnels are being constructed.

Tomorrow (Tuesday 17 January), train passengers will find the Queen Street entrances for the Britomart Station closed and a new main entrance open at the rear of the Price building in Commerce Street.

New station entrance blessed

Pot-holing work to begin this month To get ready for the detailed design of the CRL’s mid-town and Karangahape Rd stations and the modifications to Mt Eden Station, a series of investigations into the condition and location of the existing underground utility services will begin in about a week.

The investigations will take the form of closed circuit television (CCTV) drainage surveys, ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and potholes (open excavations).

Whereas the CCTV and GPR surveys are relatively quiet, the potholing operation will have some associated noise and traffic impacts.

CRL and its contractor, Intergroup, will liaise with people close to the works to minimise any negative effects.

Potholing works are planned to occur within the following locations and timeframes. However investigations may result in additional locations and timeline shifts.

• Mid-town (mainly Albert St, plus Kingston St, Victoria St West, Mayoral Drive): Late January to late February

Valerie reaches half-way point ‘Valerie’, the two-metre-wide tunnel-boring machine simultaneously excavating and installing a new stormwater pipe under Albert Street as part of CRL construction works, is expected to finish the first leg of her journey this week.

Valerie started tunnelling and pipe-jacking work from the Victoria Street on 21 November last year. By the time she arrives at the Swanson Street reception shaft mid-week, she will have travelled 290 metres.

Valerie will then be dismantled and transported back to the Victoria Street shaft in preparation for the second leg of her journey under Albert Street – tunnelling 200 metres to the shaft at Wellesley Street.

Valerie is named after Dame Valerie Adams. The name was chosen by two Auckland school children, who believed the tunnel boring machine would need to be strong like the world champion shotputter to break her way through the earth.

Gomer making good progress up Albert St ‘Gomer’, the nine-storey-high piling rig affectionately named after 1960s TV character Gomer Pyle, continues to make good progress on Albert St, keeping the project on track to start digging the cut and cover tunnels at the end of April.

Over the next fortnight, Gomer will work between the Shakespeare Tavern and the Prince Albert Apartments.

To date, Gomer has dug 142 piles of up to 20 metres in depth, which have been filled with reinforcing cages and concrete. There will be a total of 376 piles.
