Watch Albert Street’s ‘big dig’ from Wyndham crossing

New viewing windows at the Wyndham Street pedestrian crossing are offering great views of the City Rail Link’s bulk excavation works on Albert St. Located in the centre of the Albert St, the north and southfacing windows allow an up-close look at progress on the cut and cover rail tunnel works. Extra viewing windows are also planned for the Swanson St crossing.

Representing about 10% of the 3.45km length of the twintunnel underground rail link, the excavation involves digging 18 metres at the deepest point, using long-reach excavators above ground and smaller machinery inside the reinforced trench. The tunnels will then be constructed with a cast concrete floor, walls and roof before the trench is backfilled.

The work is being undertaken progressively from Wyndham St at the southern end to Customs St at the northern end.

Excavation at the southern end is expected to be complete

by October this year and the northern by the middle of next year. Construction of the tunnel box is expected to start late this year and be completed by late 2018. By spring 2019, this section of Albert St will be reinstated with a new road surface, bus lanes, widened footpaths and street furniture.

The bulk excavation marks a significant point in the construction process. It’s also exciting and challenging work for CRL engineers, who must construct rail tunnels below

groundwater level while maintaining surface-level access to Albert St for foot and vehicle traffic.

Cut and cover construction is being used at each end of the CRL tunnels – between Britomart Station and the future Aotea Station and, later, where it connects to the western line at Mt Eden. Between Aotea and Mt Eden stations, the tunnels will be between 13 and 42 metres below ground and bored using a 7m diameter tunnel boring machine.

Stay safe There are continual truck and machinery movements and road layout changes on Albert St. Stay alert, use only designated crossings and please abide by all traffic and crossing signals.

Praise for Tyler Street workers The team managing traffic around the Britomart construction site has come in for praise from two locals who emailed us this week to pass on their thanks.

Ross, Ihaia and Tony are on hand most days to help people using the street and accessing the station.

They’ve been praised by building manager Dean Mulligan for organising parking during the street’s inorganic collection.

“The Tyler St area is very busy at the best of times and the idea of having a sixwheeler compacting truck parked up for 20 minutes had us a bit worried. Fortunately, the CRL project guys had it covered and made the whole exercise for us, Waste Management and Auckland Council, look easy. To expedite things, they pitched in

and helped load the truck,” said Dean.

“These organised guys continue to be a pleasure to have around and deserve recognition and praise from those who work and live in the area.”

Ross also sorted out an issue for a local resident, who found her car park entrance blocked by someone in her driveway who wouldn’t let her in. She drove on a little further and approached Ross for help, saying she felt a little nervous and a bit intimidated by the situation. He jumped into action and said he’d sort the problem for her. He stopped traffic so she could back up, got the person to move out of the way and waited to make sure the resident made it safely into her building.

Introducing ‘Sandrine’, the hydrofraise machine

Waiting patiently on Lower Queen Street for her time in the construction spotlight, is an exotic red beauty named ‘Sandrine’.

She is painted the same bright red as both the six 10m high storage silos and bentonite plants that will create and recycle the bentonite slurry used in construction of the D-walls.

Sandrine is a 90 tonne compact hydrofraise piling rig that will be used to dig the 15 to 20-metre-deep diaphragm wall (or D-wall) panels that will form the structural support for the CRL tunnels at Britomart Station and prevent water ingress.

A D-wall is a continuous wall constructed in the ground, typically to form an underground barrier or structure.

They are constructed through a narrow excavated trench and supported by an engineered fluid (typically a sodium bentonite mud) which is later replaced by permanent concrete.

The rig is named after Sandrine Mussier, who has worked for CRL contractor Soletanche-Bachy for the past 20 years, looking after its international project staff. She is pictured here, sitting inside her namesake at its naming celebration in Paris before it was shipped to Auckland to start work on the CRL. Soletanche Bachy has a tradition of naming its machinery after women who work for the company.

At the completion of the works, the diaphragm walls become part of the permanent structure by supporting Britomart’s Chief Post Office building and the CRL tunnel box.

D-wall construction is due to start in August and continue over the next six months.

Sandrine can dig walls 50 metres deep and 1200mm thick.

Traffic changes around Albert St The general rule for traffic accessing Albert Street’s side streets is now ‘left in and left out’.

Right-hand turns are no longer possible.

This will be the formation for the remainder of the CRL construction works in this area.

For example, Mills Lane is now a one-way street going in and traffic must exit via Swanson Street, turning left into Albert Street (see map).

The diversion of northbound traffic down Swanson West will conclude in late October.

Concrete pour for CRL tunnel stubs at Commercial Bay site The first two concrete base slabs for the CRL twin-tunnels were laid on Lower Queen Street last week.

The 700mm-thick slabs are the first eight metres of CRL tunnel box floor to be poured out of the total 3.45km length of tunnel to be constructed.

Located under the Lower Queen Street walkway, adjacent to the Zurich building, these tunnel stubs will eventually connect to sections of tunnel from Britomart Station.

The slabs are protected by a high-tech waterproofing system to keep saltwater out, as they’re sitting about 13 metres below sea level.

Construction is about to start on the walls for this short section of tunnel. When a roof is placed over the top in about a month, the result will be the first completed section of tunnel box for the project.
