Whyalla economy taking off as helicopter firm jumps aboard MAYOR Lyn Breuer has declared the Becker Helicopters arrival in Whyalla as a clear sign the city is in flight mode and ready to soar to new heights.

Representatives from Becker Helicopters, Australia’s largest helicopter flight training company, were in Whyalla in January to reveal their plans to create an operat-

ing base in the Upper Spencer Gulf region, operating out of the Whyalla Airport and creating 80 new jobs in its first three years.

Making the announcement, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said Becker’s expansion into Whyalla would create a new business sector for the town and increase economic activity in regional SA.

The South Australian Government will support the establishment of the new base in Whyalla through the Economic Investment Fund.

The new facility – including hangars and administration buildings - will be established at the Whyalla airport to provide pilot training for military personnel and international students.

In addition to the 80 full-time jobs - pilot instructors, engineers, operations and administration staff - a further 32 local jobs from flowon work are likely to be created along with 60 in construction.

Whyalla flying with new firms jumping on board Continued from Page 1 Discussions are underway between Becker Helicopters, the University of South Australia and TAFE SA to form training partnerships, facilitating the delivery of degree-level and vocational aviation and aerospace training courses in Whyalla.

Mayor Breuer said the move by Becker Helicopters to Whyalla was entirely appropriate as the city’s economy starts to take off again.

Council has been helping the company for the past year to make this exciting move to Whyalla.

“We have been talking with Becker Helicopters since January last year and believe they could see the benefits of setting up an operating base in Whyalla even before the sale of our steelworks to the GFG Alliance went through,” Mayor Breuer said.

“Their move to Whyalla confirms the fact the Whyalla economy is really starting to soar again.

“I must pay tribute to our Chief Executive Officer Chris Cowley who was instrumental in handling all the negotiations to pave the way for this exciting move to our city.

“The support we have had from the State Government and Defence SA in these negotiations has also been key component.

Member for Giles Eddie Hughes said the move would not only create immediate jobs but would mean more jobs in the future as the Whyalla economy diversifies.

“It will help diversify Whyalla’s economy and create jobs in a new industry,” Mr Hughes said.

“There is real potential for additional job growth and there will be a significant spin off for accommodation, hospitality and training given the number of trainee pilots that will be based in Whyalla.

The foundation for Whyalla’s rebirth as an economic powerhouse was laid with the sale of the Arrium Group to the Gupta Family Group Alliance last year and the good news has continued to build in 2018.

Now we have Becker Helicopters coming to Whyalla to set up a pilot training base at our airport. Here’s more jobs, more opportunities and more impetitus for our city.

It was a pleasure to meet Mike and Jan Becker when they came to Whyalla for the announcement. Not only are they very astute and professional business people they are all-round nice and genuine people.

What a pleasure it is to welcome these sort of people to Whyalla ... the sort of people that are going to embrace our city and become real contributors to our economy and our community.

The boost from this move by Becker Helicopters from the Sunshine Coast to Whyalla is already being felt.

Not only has it further lifted confidence in Whyalla and starting to make others think of our region as the place to be for industry and innovation. It is another business that will be providing real jobs for our community and real jobs for our young people who want to stay, work and study in Whyalla.

Becker has already indicated it wants to use some of our space at the TAFE campus and we are seeing what this could do for our young people.

From the Mayor’s office Immediately after the Becker announcement, we were contacted by a young Whyalla lad who was planning to move down to Adelaide to chase the sort of helicopter pilot training Becker will be providing. Now, he is a genuine hope to stay right here in Whyalla, with this family, to study and remain a member of our community.

This is fantastic news and just the sort of outcome we like to see when we go out and chase these businesses and present Whyalla as an attractive place for companies to relocate, set-up or simply expand.

The positive business news doesn’t stop here either. In the same week we welcomed Becker Helicopters to the city, we also had the pleasure of going to the official opening of the SSE Australia solar farm at the Whyalla industrial estate.

This is just the first of many renewal power projects planned for Whyalla.

We, as a regional city, are fast growing a reputation as one of the renewal energy hubs of South Australia and, indeed, Australia.

With our steelworks owner Sanjeev Gupta flagging a range of renewable projects through his Liberty One Steel, ZEN Energy and SIMEC mining companies, there will be some more exciting announcements on this energy front very soon.

All of this business excitement is matched by the vibe around town as we also see more and more big events rolling in to Whyalla.

We are gearing up for the second Whyalla uneARTh Festival on March 30-31 after the inaugural event was such a huge success and recognised with a People’s Choice Ruby Award at the Arts SA awards.

Once again, Council and it’s brilliant Events and Tourism Officer Rebecca Neilson have put together an outstanding array of talent for the 2018 Whyalla uneARTh Festival that is not only going to entertain locals, it will also bring many people into our city.

Then there’s the Hidden Music Festival on April 21 in Ada Ryan Gardens. This is a worldclass festival with top quality acts and an event that was rarely seen in the past in Whyalla. It is, however, the sort of event that is now viewing Whyalla as a must-play place.

Add in the new jetty which is getting closer to the start of construction, the brilliant upgrade of Wilson Park, the promise of a $100m new high school and its no wonder Whyalla continues to be viewed across the state and the country as the place to be.

Strap yourself in Whyalla, we are in for spectacular ride in 2018 and beyond.

Mayor congratulates new Barngarla board WHYALLA Mayor Lyn Breuer has welcomed the appointment of the new Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation board.

After six months with an interim body, the new board has been appointed to govern native title affairs for the Barngarla people.

“This is a positive move and a step forward for the Barngarla people,” Mayor Breuer said.

“I’d like to congratulate the new

board and chairs and look forward to working with them.”

The new Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation board includes people from Port Lincoln, Whyalla and Port Augusta. Members consist of Barngarla people who are approved by the corporation based on native title determination guidelines.

The board will manage all Barngarla native title affairs for the next two years. Port Lincoln’s Emma Richards is

co-chairperson of the committee alongside Whyalla’s Roderick Wingfield.

Her previous experience includes as a chairperson with the Natural Resources Management Aboriginal Advisory Board and the Family Violence Prevention Legal Aboriginal Service.

Ms Richards said she was honoured to be the first female chairperson for Barngarla native title affairs.

“As a woman I am very proud, I’m a single mother of four children, I work

full time and have always been a strong advocate for our people,” she said.

“I will strive to help deliver good governance, accountability, transparency and positive new directions for our Barngarla community as a whole and look forward to working with the community to achieve these targets.”

Ms Richards said it was encouraging to know the community has moved into a new era where women are now being allowed a voice on this level.

She said the goal in 2018 was to have determination handover formalities completed before a formal Ceremony of Native Title handover was held for the community to participate in.

Ms Richards said the most exciting event to look forward to was the establishment of the Barngarla Business and Cultural centres to provide a space for the Barngarla community to access support and information.

Fitting tribute for Jim

Wetlands named after former mayor IT was a special day for the city as the Jim Pollock Whyalla Wetlands were officially named in February.

More than 50 people were in attendance for a ceremony that involved the unveiling of a plaque, featuring a picture of former Whyalla Mayor Jim Pollock, set in a 14-tonne iron ore boulder.

Members of Jim’s family, friends and many Whyalla residents were joined by distinguished guests who spoke at the ceremony. Those speaking were not only prominent leaders in our community but also close friends and colleagues of Jim, making it a very emotional occasion.

Member for Frome and the minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Geoff Brock was almost overcome with emotion as he paid tribute to Jim. Whyalla Deputy Mayor Jenny Barnes (deputising for Mayor Lyn Breuer) and Member for Giles Eddie Hughes also gave deeply moving, and at times amusing, speeches as they recounted the life of Jim and why the naming was so appropriate.

ance, son-in-law Nigel Morgan spoke on behalf of the Pollock family before Jim’s daughters Kerri and Steffany gave an impromptu speech to thank all those involved in the ceremony, the monument and naming of the wetlands.

“I can’t think of a more appropriate honour for someone I had the pleasure of working for, and with, while an employee of council and then as a councillor,” Deputy Mayor Barnes said.

“Jim loved Whyalla and loved the community.

“I think he would love, albeit very modestly, the fact he will be further remembered for this beautiful place in Whyalla that represents so many of the things Jim wanted for Whyalla … good facilities, beautiful attractions and wonderful places for the whole community to enjoy.

“The lump of iron ore that carries a special plaque in Jim’s honour is entirely appropriate. Jim was, indeed, like a rock for Whyalla with a heart that probably weighed in around the 14-tonne mark.”

Former Mayor Jim Pollock. for the ceremony as a friend of the family and was very proud to have been invited.

“I first met Jim when I was a councillor in Port Pirie and we came over to Whyalla for business,” Mr Brock said.

“Jim made sure he went out his way to make us feel welcome, that was the sort of man Jim was.

Eddie Hughes, a former councillor colleague of Jim’s, told a few tall fishing tales involving Jim and spoke about the friendly footy banter that would be swapped during the week as supporters of opposing sides.

He also listed off the other organisations Jim contributed to including the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association, the Upper Spencer Gulf Common Purpose Group, the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula RDO, the Local Government Association and Provisional Cities and Eyre Peninsula National Resource Management Board, to name a few.

As a measure of the esteem that Jim was held in the Whyala community, the offer by the Gupta Family Group Alliance to donate the boulder was backed up with a massive voluntary effort by a group of Whyalla businesses to get this impressive monument to the city and in place at the wetlands where an information board will also be erected nearby.

The 14-tonne boulder was sourced from GFG Alliance Simec-owned Southern Middleback Ranges Mining Operation at Iron Duke. Mining contractors BGC did the heavy work at the pit to extract the rock before loading it on to a Scholz Transport truck in November last year.

Bright future in energy MAYOR Lyn Breuer said it was another proud day for the city and the region as the SSE Australia Whyalla Solar Farm was officially opened in January.

The 6MW DC solar farm on Edwards Road in Whyalla is the first utility scale solar project to be completed in South Australia.

It is stage 1 of a 3-stage project within the Whyalla industrial zone totalling 18MW. The project commenced construction in January 2017.

Mayor Breuer declared it was yet another sign Whyalla was motoring ahead as an industrial powerhouse while being driven by a renewable energy focus.

“This project started early last year and shows Whyalla wasn’t sitting idle even when there was

uncertainty over the future of the former Arrium-owned steelworks,” Mayor Breuer said.

“As a council, we’ve always had confidence in our economy and this was recognised by SSE Australia in starting this project and following through with this magnificent new solar farm.

“With GFG Alliance adding to the renewable energy push

in Whyalla, SSE Australia will be expanding on this farm and there are more and more companies interested in becoming a part of the booming Whyalla economy.”

Major Projects Director of SSE Australia, Colin Gillam said “While South Australia has led the country in policy and support for renewable energy,

this is the first utility scale solar project to commence construction and be commissioned.

“We are delighted to have the Premier back again to see us deliver on our promise to be part of the solution to South Australia’s energy future.”

The project is located on 10ha of land in the Whyalla Industrial Estate. It uses 17,280

solar panels and 180 SSE solar inverters converting power ready for export direct to the SA electricity network.

It is anticipated it will generate 10GWh, enough to power 1400 homes and reduce carbon emissions by 7500 tonnes per annum. Space on site has been allocated for a battery expansion in the future.

It has employed around 20 so far with most of these coming from Whyalla.

Access ramps

THE City of Whyalla is listening and has moved to solve an issue outside the new Novita Hub on Forsyth Street.Comments from a resident were posted on our Facebook site expressing their frustration over a parking and access issue at the hub for those in wheelchairs. Council crews placed a temporary ramp in place in February, the day after receiving the resident’s complaint, while temporary disabled parking and signs have been in place since late last year. After being contacted by Novita late last year, Council has been working with the organisation to sort out a permanent solution to these issues. The current parking needs to be widened and permanent ramps installed to be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act requirements.Council CEO Chris Cowley said completion of the consultation and construction process would be no later than mid April.

Another chip day

THERE will be another $10 microchipping day for pets on June 30 from 10am to 2pm at the Searle Street dog park. The City of Whyalla ran its second $10 microchipping day in March. In preparation for new animal management laws coming into effect in July this year, council provided $10 microchipping for dogs and cats.

From July this year all dogs and cats must be microchipped. Dogs and cats must also be registered with council and expiation notices will be issued to owners who fail to register.

Clean-up becoming a tradition

CONGRATULATIONS Whyalla … you did yourself proud on Clean Up Australia Day. At Civic Park there were more than 100 people and many groups that registered for the Council-organised clean-up day on Sunday, March 4 while a number of community groups held their own clean-up days including the schools which got busy cleaning up on Friday.

Just as encouraging was people all over Whyalla cleaning up their own backyards and houses as Council put on a half-price waste and free green waste day at the Mount Laura Waste and Resource Recovery Centre.

More than 200 cars rolled up to the waste centre on March 4 to take advantage of this day. The centre normally gets about 30 cars on a Sunday.

CEO Chris Cowley, was one of many Council workers who put in the hard yards at the waste centre to help keep the big line of cars moving on the day. Cars were lined up to Iron Knob Road for most of the day with the waste centre workers skipping their lunch breaks to keep things moving smoothly.

“Full marks to all the workers down here at the waste centre and those out at the clean-up day at Civic Park … everyone pitched in.

“I know everyone at the waste centre skipped lunch and normal breaks to deal with the huge workload and their commitment was really appreciated.

“We had a bit of a wait on the gate but everyone was really good, patient and we got through a massive load.

“It was fantastic to see everyone cleaning up the city and making Whyalla an awesome place to live.”

At the waste centre there was a total of 22.36 tonnes

of mixed waste processed, 4.08 tonnes of steel extracted for recycling and 54 loads of green waste delivered.

A lot of the trucks that came through were from the Civic Park clean-up day where residents turned out and then scattered to clean up areas of Whyalla. Council Project Control Officer and organiser for the Whyalla Clean Up Australia Day, Jo McGrath said the response from the public was again positive and the next generation of community-minded people was now starting to come through.

“We had people there who have been coming for years and now they are starting to bring their children and their grandchildren,” Jo said.

WHYALLA Mayor Lyn Breuer returned from leave on Monday, February 19 this year.Mayor Breuer took leave from Thursday, February 8 this year to seek legal advice on a report made to South Australian Police alleging an assault. The Mayor subsequently received a summons to appear in court regarding the report. Mayor Breuer informed Council she has engaged legal counsel and will be strenuously defending any charges. Mayor Breuer has informed Council that this is a private matter and does not interfere with her ability to perform her functions and duties as a civic leader. While a matter is being investigated, and even after charges are laid but before a finding by a Court, no action is required under the Local Government Act 1999 (“LG Act”). Council Chief Executive Officer Chris Cowley said this was a personal decision by the Mayor and had no bearing on day-to-day Council operations.

“Council and all its services have continued and will continue as normal,” Mr Cowley said. The matter was mentioned in court on March 5 and adjourned.

Whyalla working with sister cities to grow

THE City of Whyalla has committed to working with Port Augusta and Port Pirie to transition the region’s economy and communities.

Deputising for Mayor Lyn Breuer, Deputy Mayor Jenny Barnes attended the launch of the ‘Transforming the Upper Spencer Gulf’ report with other Upper Spencer Gulf leaders in Whyalla during February.

The report, revealed in the City of Whyalla chambers, detailed the priorities for the Upper Spencer Gulf and identifies 30 strategic initiatives to help pave the way for transition of the region’s economy and communities.

Some of the key initiatives of particular interest to Whyalla include a focus on renewable energy; defence; event, cultural and marine tourism; and mining.

Deputy Mayor Barnes said

that to secure the future of the whole region, the three cities must keep working together.

“For example, we know the three cities all have potential to grow in areas such as renewable energy, defence industries; event and marine tourism,” Deputy Mayor Barnes said.

“We need to keep working together to make sure we generate more benefit across our whole region than we ever could by working on our own or by competing against each other.”

Port Pirie Deputy Mayor Leon Stephens said the opportunities for the three cities are huge with many gaining traction.

“As the future of our three Upper Spencer Gulf Cities gains more certainty, we can’t afford to be complacent,” he said.

“We must continue to actively promote the region’s potential to grow and diversify across a

while securing the future of the smelter, steelworks and a new solar thermal powerstation are major boosts for the region, all three cities need to look at other opportunities that will leverage further investment and growth.

Port Augusta’s Deputy Mayor Brett Benbow also highlighted the importance of skills and infrastructure in transitioning and diversifying.

“We need to improve access to higher education and training in our region to support these emerging sectors and make sure we have the strategic infrastructure to secure our role as a transport intermodal hub,” he said.

“That includes expanding existing, under-utilised port facilities in Port Pirie and Whyalla and an alternative national highway crossing of the gulf at Port Augusta.

“Ultimately this is about strengthening the role of Port Pirie, Whyalla and Port Augusta as regional centres, improving business and community confidence and making sure our three cities are places people want to come and live, work and visit.”

Mayor goes into bat for local jobs WHYALLA Mayor Lyn Breuer has gone in to bat for local workers and made a call for measures to create a strong local employment base instead of flyin-fly-out workers.

Mayor Breuer said as the economy of the Upper Spencer Gulf transitions, the region needed to have a strong local workforce with the right qualifications.

“Our three cities have all suffered from an increase in fly-in-fly-out professional and technical workforce and, if not addressed, it will be an impediment to our future growth and economic diversification,” Mayor Breuer said.

“We need to make the facilities and support available locally to give school leavers and adult learners the best opportunity to finish their tertiary studies and to be part of the long-term success and vibrancy of our regional cities.

“Ultimately, we want to see an expansion of high education courses and research successfully delivered in the region.”

What’s more, Council has teamed up with these businesses, and others, to become ambassadors for our city and

region. The Unearth Whyalla Visitor Guide is being distributed to these businesses where those behind the counter can further promote our city and region to visitors coming into their premises.

“This is not only a great publication, it is a great example of Whyalla getting on the front foot and building on the wonderful community we have here,” City of Whyalla CEO Chris Cowley said.

Leader Teresa Coles said the Unearth Whyalla Visitor Guide had been distributed throughout 43 accredited visitor centres in South Australia from Port Lincoln to Coober Pedy the Riverland and Mt Gambier as well as sneaking across the border into Broken Hill and Mildura.

Chunked-up talent in a chock-a-block program THE line-up for this year’s Whyalla uneARTh Festival is pretty damn chunky!

Backing up from last year’s outstanding inaugural event (which, by the way, won a Ruby Award as the people’s choice at the Arts SA Awards) organisers of this year’s event on March 30-31 have put together another amazing array of talent with many acts coming straight from the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Every act is a headline act like the iconic Adelaide tribute band Chunky Custard.

Yep, that’s right, the Chunkies are bringing their mullets and spandex to Whyalla for uneARTh. This legendary Adelaide highcamp cover band has been cruising around the fringes of society for nearly 30 years. They’re an iconic band that fits perfectly with the uneARTh vibe.

The Chunkies are outrageous, funny and bloody talented as they put on a show like you’ve never seen. Their performance just keeps evolving over a 20-year loop to make them as retro-relevant now as they were when they started back in the 90s.

From chunky to funky, the Gospo Collective will be putting on their Jackson v Jackson extravaganza. This an amazing sing-off between the hits of Michael and Janet Jackson performed with the backing of a heavenly choir.

From nice to naughty, it will be a big welcome for the outrageous Hans.

ARTie our cool mascot

ARTie it is as the 2018 Whyalla uneARTh Festival mascot has a name thanks to Rebecca Gow. We asked Whyalla to come up with a name for the uneARTh Festival doggy mascot beautifully made by our own Pete Santucci (pictured). We had a stack of suggestions and it was a tough task for the judges.

There were some great suggestions with Rusty being a big contender. Frank (furt) was a good one, as were Steely, Dig the Dog, Spark Pug, Chew Barka and Waylla the Dog. We even had plenty of people thinking it should be Pete after its creator Pete was very flattered.

The award for the cutest could go to Rachel Barlow’s fouryear-old who suggested Princess Nunkey. If we happen to get a female version of the dog … that will be her name!

But it was Rebecca’s suggestion that resonated with the judges. It built in the “ART” of the

uneARTh Festival and is a short, sharp and sweet name that really encapsulates what the festival is all about … arty and exciting.

Rebecca wins for herself a double cinema pass to the Middleback Arts Centre.

So look out around town as ARTie starts to pop up here and there in the lead up to the 2018 Whyalla uneARTh Festival on March 30-31.

Art Saturday, March 31. All day. Roving Local natural and digital media artist Leith O’Malley will be painting and drawing all day on Saturday. Leith’s work has been showcased at the Wacom ‘Next Level Exhibition’ in Auckland (NZ), Sydney and Melbourne galleries. He was also included in the 2016 European book publication “Looking Down Under – Contemporary Artists of Australia”. The 2018 music release this month from Australian songstress Christine Anu features his portrait work on the cover.

Karma and the Jester are a local easy listening band that have been playing together for just over a year. The band formed at the local Whyalla COMET music festival, where local musicians play their original song compositions. The band consists of Jeanneke Karma Morrison Aardenburg (Karma), Vocals and percussion, Paul Handley (Jester), Guitar and vocals, Robert Ziggler (Ziggy), Bass Guitar and Mick Frost (Frosty), Guest Drummer. The band has spent a lot of time writing songs and has done a couple of local gigs that were well received.

An international superstar, sex symbol and accordionist, Hans has been enthralling (and terrorising) audiences around the globe for over a decade.

Famed for his fabulous performances Hans’ unique brand of cabaret has won high profile fans including Princess Mary, Naomi Campbell, Miranda Kerr, P!nk.

Moon Band (or in Yankuntjatjara “Kinara Band”) is the culmination of Desmond Woodforde’s 30 years of experience working with the best musicians from across the APY Lands.

As one of the founding members of Iwantja Band, Desmond was inspired to create Moon Band after a Battle of the Bands, at Uluru.

Mel and Me will be playing all your children’s favourites at this year’s uneARTh Festival. The duo are well known to the city as Melissa Schenck on vocals, accompanied by guitarist Graeme Stephenson. They will be bringing a mix of current and older style music for everyone to be bopping along to during the festival.

Namaste Whyalla will hold a workshop on the second day of the festival, it’s a workshop not to be missed.

Our festival the people’s choice WHYALLA stood proud last year as our inaugural uneARTh Festival defeated some of the biggest events in the state to win the People’s Choice Award at the 2017 Arts South Australia Ruby Awards.

In a record-breaking year for the People’s Choice Award, with close to 1700 votes registered, the 2017 Whyalla uneARTh Festival was crowned the people’s choice in what Ruby Award organisers said was a “heated fight for first place to the very end”.

Whyalla’s UneARTh Festival was voted by the people of South Australia as the best event in state in front of other big ticket items like the DreamBIG Children’s Festival, SALA Festival, Stirling Fringe and two Adelaide Festival events.

Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer and council’s Events Co-ordinator Rebecca Neilson attended the glittering award night at the Queen’s Theatre in Adelaide on the weekend. UneARTh was a finalist in the Community or Regional Impact under $100,000 category of the prestigious statewide awards.

While missing out to the Coorong’s Creating Coonalpyn project in this division, Mayor Breuer said the People’s Choice Award meant more to Whyalla and the community.

“While it would have been nice to win the category as voted by the judges, the fact that our event got the most votes from the public throughout South Australia out of all these other events, is a magnificent achievement,” Mayor Breuer said. “Effectively, our festival has been voted the best by those that actually attended the event and by the people of Whyalla who are obviously so very proud of it.

“Whyalla has not only shown it is capable of producing a world-class event, it is also showed the whole state how strong our community is and

A further three awards were announced including the Sustained Contribution by an Individual, the Geoff Crowhurst Memorial Award and the Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Oz Day goes off in garden THE threat of scorching weather didn’t come but the pre-emptive move of the Australia Day celebrations proved a winner.

The Whyalla Australia Day Celebrations were originally planned for the foreshore but for everyone’s comfort, they were moved to nearby Ada Ryan Gardens to give people more shade and shelter.

There was still attractions on the foreshore and the fireworks went off with a bang off the jet-

ty, but the overall sentiment was that gardens were perfect for the celebrations.

There was plenty of free entertainment and activities with more than 5000 people wondering through the celebrations on January 26.

The watermelon eating and dummy spitting competitions proved popular and funny as young and old got involved.

Local entertainers Brie Ryan, Jasmine Moder and Emily

Rawlings kicked off the entertainment while Brie performed the national anthem and the Whyalla Citizens of the Year were present.

Circus Elements then kept crowd amused before local lads Jackdaw jumped on stage and belted out a fine accoustic set of popular songs.

A big crowd then gathered on the foreshore to watch a spectacular display of fireworks off the jetty groyne.

Wonderful recognition Whyalla’s leading citizens honoured WHYALLA Mayor Lyn Breuer praised this year’s winners of the 2018 Whyalla Australia Day Awards and said it was no surprise so many wonderful people were being recognised.

The Mayor presented each winner their City of Whyalla Australia Day award during a special function on Thursday, January 25, at the Mount Laura Homestead.

“We’ve seen over the past six months what a wonderful and strong community we have in Whyalla,” Mayor Breuer said.

“The strength of this community is the reason we got through a tough period last year, with the uncertainty of the sale of the steelworks, and the foundation for that strength comes from these individuals we are honouring.

“When the likes of Sanjeev Gupta (chief executive of GFG Alliance which now runs and owners the Whyalla steelworks and associated mines) and representatives from the number of new companies coming to Whyalla, talk about how impressed they are with Whyalla and our community, we can thank all of tonight’s winners, and all the nominees, for their work to create that community.

“Every one of the winners has contributed in their own way to help Whyalla get back on the road to a wonderful future.

“Along the way, they’ve also helped a lot of individuals and groups in our city and for this we are so grateful.

Top shop for Whyalla Tourism focus in our main street

MAYOR Lyn Breuer has hailed the Whyalla Tourism Focus Group’s city plaza information centre as an “excellent initiative” for our city.

The Mayor was speaking after officially opening the new office in the Whyalla main street. The new office and tourist information point is an initiative of the Whyalla Tourism Focus Group which formed 12 months ago.

“This is an excellent initiative,” Mayor Breuer said.

“Now that we’ve turned the corner in Whyalla and our prospects have changed with our economy diversifying, it is important to bring the tourism aspect into the mix.

“Anything we can do to encourage tourism will make such a difference to our economy and our community. This venture by the Whyalla Tourism Focus Group is going to add to what we’ve already got with the Whyalla Visitor Centre and provide something that people can come to in the main street.

“I’d like to thank everybody involved in this venture and look forward to its progress.”

Chair of the Whyalla Tourism Focus Group, Barbara Derham agreed that the new office and tourism information shop would complement the visitor centre on the Lincoln Highway.

“This is another venue where people can get information,” Ms Derham said.

“The idea came from a couple of our executive members and council staff have been very

supportive.

“We now have a shop kindly donated by SA Design and Print, where we pay no rent or electricity, and this shows that businesses understand what tourism brings to the city.

“We’d like to thank the owners of SA Design and Print, this will make the city more vibrant and provides another venue where people can get informa-

tion in the city.

“It will be staffed from Tuesday to Friday by a team of dedicated volunteers.”

She said the office, situated next to SA Design and Print, was also a chance for other businesses to become members of the Whyalla Tourism Focus Group and have a presence with brochures and information. She said the group was also keen to

promote local community and sporting groups who could use the facility for meetings.

Sponsorship powers model railway THE Whyalla Maritime Museum model railway now has a full head of steam and is tracking towards an even bigger future with sponsorship from Genesee & Wyoming Australia Pty Ltd. The three-year sponsorship was signed last year with the official cutting of the ribbon for the agreement being conducted February 21.

This presentation signified the partnership between Genesee & Wyoming Australia (GWA), the City of Whyalla, the Maritime Museum and the Whyalla Model Railway Society which builds and maintains the impressive model railway.

The start of the sponsorship last year allowed the society to add several more metres of track (the equivalent of hundreds of kilometres) to its famous model railway at the Whyalla Maritime Museum. The new section of track represents the line out to the Iron Baron and Iron Duke mining areas.

“The tracks were installed and tested, the next step was to manufacture the unique ore wagons, no off the shelf models were available,” Jim Cochrane from the model society said.

“The ore wagons provided quite a challenge due to the odd cylindrical shape, many attempts to build replicas were

GWA is the railway company that runs the local rail network between the Eyre Peninsula iron ore mines and the Whyalla steelworks.

“The Genesee and Wyoming locomotives and wagons are an iconic part of our city and we believe the GWA sponsorship will greatly enhance the Whyalla Maritime Museum’s model

railway exhibit and relevance for visitors,” Whyalla Visitor Centre Team Leader Teresa Coles said.

Audits on our green dumping

THE City of Whyalla is continuing with a series of audits to avoid contamination of green waste at the Mount Laura Waste and Recycling Depot.

During a recent audit, conducted between 9.30am and 1pm on a weekday, three loads of green waste were found to be contaminated. These incidents were resolved on site but serve a reminder to residents to be careful with the content of their green waste.

Green waste is converted into mulch for use in the community.

As such, green waste should consist of only organic material from your garden and nothing that has been treated with chemicals such as railway sleepers and pine posts.

Acceptable green waste includes grass clippings, weeds (but no caltrop or other noxious weeds that can spread), tree pruning’s no greater than 300mm diameter, plants, branches, shrubs and bushes.

Green waste delivered to the waste depot should NOT contain plastics, metal, cans, cardboard, paper, bricks, concrete or large logs or anything you suspect could contain asbestos.

Council in fight to stop vandalism THE City of Whyalla is continuing its fight against vandalism and crime after several attacks over the Christmas holiday period Council has documented each of the incidents and reported them to the Whyalla police to be recorded.

Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer said every incident of vandalism to public property and crime was being reported to police and those responsible should be aware they “are” being watched and council will not stop in its campaign against these senseless acts.

“Those responsible for these acts need to know that we are reporting every incident to the police,” Mayor Breuer said.

“The people causing this damage should also be aware there are a severe penalties for these actions.

Mayor Breuer said council also encouraged residents to report all incidents of vandalism to public property to council.

Another top-quality fueled event coming to Whyalla

WHYALLA continues to enhance it’s reputation as the motor sport city of South Australia with another blockbuster event coming to town next month.

The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars extravaganza will roar into Whyalla on Saturday, April 7 at the Steel City Drags Club track.

This event keeps the rubber rolling on a big few weeks in Whyalla when it comes to motor sport. The city is still humming from the Xtreme Powerfest #8 last month while the Steel City Drags Club, Whyalla Speedway Club and Whyalla Go Kart Club keep on providing top quality events and competition for motor fans.

The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars will keep the pistons pumping in Whyalla with a show only ever seen in South Australia once before. We’re talking 4000hp nitro funny cars tearing up the Steel City Drags track.

Plus there will be Supercharged Outlaws, Modified Eliminator, Super Sedan, Super Street, Modified Bike and Junior

Dragster. Drags club president Mark Kuhn said it is going to be a spectacular show of raw power.

“We only ever seen these sort of nitro cars in South Australia once before and this is the first time they’ve come to Whyalla,” he said.

“We’re going to see nitro funny cars that are going to hit 200mph (320km/h) down the 200m track in under 4 seconds.

“There’ll be flames, noise, action and amazing show of brute power and excitement.

“They’re also bringing a nitro wheel stand car that will lift off down the track in an amazing sight.”

The Aeroflow event is part of a national circuit of drag events.

The event that’s coming to Whyalla is the same event they get in Melbourne, Sydney and right up to Cairns in Far North Queensland.

“It is the most spectacular show in drag racing,” Mark said.

The Steel City Drags Club is hosting the event in partnership with Aeroflow. If you haven’t seen enough flames and fireworks on the track during the day, the club is also putting on a fireworks spectacular to round out the evening.

Gates open for the family-friendly event at 10am on Saturday, April 7 with eliminations starting at 1pm and the nitro racing starting at 5pm.
