OUTDOOR RECREATION:
ARTS AT THE AMP / HISTORY OF OUTDOOR ARTS
The Westerville Rotary Amphitheater at Alum Creek Park North is a treasured piece of architecture that has served as a performance space in Westerville for more than 80 years. Since its completion in the 1930s, the Amphitheater has gone through many changes, including a re-design in 2001 with the support of the City of Westerville, Westerville residents, and Westerville Rotary. The Amphitheater has played host to a range of musical and theatrical performances throughout its history, and continues to do so today. The Summer Concert Series, for example, is one of the first Parks and Recreation performance programs in the outdoor theater that remains popular today (and one of the longest running arts programs in Westerville). Westerville Parks and Recreation offers three series of concerts at the Amphitheater each year: the Sunday evening Sounds of Summer Series; the Wednesday evening Family Concert Series; and a newly expanded “Jazz at the Amp” series. The concerts showcase a wide range of music that include classic rock, jazz, classical, swing and dance music.
CREATIVE ARTS In addition to the music series, the Amphitheater is also home to several theatrical performances during spring and summer. New for the 2017 season is a Westerville Parks and Recreation Civic Theatre (WPRCT) youth production of Disney’s The Lion King Jr., as well as a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, a collaborative project with The Curtain Players. The Amphitheater also serves as the backdrop to outdoor drama camps and programming for children through Westerville Parks and Recreation and local drama organizations. This unique performance space located in Westerville’s first and oldest park offers residents a chance to enjoy high quality arts programming with the whole family in a beautiful outdoor setting. The Westerville Rotary Amphitheater is a performance venue steeped in history that is unlike any other in the community. Look for more information about all of the outdoor arts programs and performances at the Amphitheater online at www.westerville.org and in the Summer edition of the Westerville Community Recreation Guide.
