Take the Pledge to Drink From the Tap

Earth Day began in 1970 when 20 million Americans gathered in schools across the country to celebrate the environment. Today, more than one billion people in more than 190 countries participate in the global day to protect the planet. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Planet vs. Plastics.” If you want to protect the planet and live in Vallejo, this should be an easy one for you.

We all know that plastics are terrible for the environment. They don’t decompose, and they suffocate our forests, threaten wildlife, and end up in our rivers, lakes, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that’s twice the size of Texas. A lot of plastic products that people use on a daily basis – shampoo bottles, toothpaste tubes, even a k-cup for a morning cup of Joe – may seem unavoidable (although they’re not), but here’s one thing that isn’t: the single-use plastic water bottle.

Plastic water bottles are notoriously antienvironment. Here are three great benefits you can enjoy by switching to drink Vallejo’s fabulous tap water:

FINANCIAL BENEFITS

Tap water is cheap. By drinking from the tap, you can save up to $1,400 a year!

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

Drinking tap water uses 85% less energy and 79% less greenhouse gas emissions than drinking the same amount in bottled water.

HEALTH BENEFITS

A recent study has shown that there are as many as 240,000 micro and nanoscopic plastic particles in a single liter of bottled water – these are plastics you’re putting in your body when you drink that water. Tap water around the globe might contain nanoplastics, but nowhere near the number as a plastic water bottle.

Plus, Vallejo has the great fortune of having some of California’s best water sourced from, among other places, the beautiful and pristine Lake Berryessa.

• Vallejoans can be proud of the water that comes from the tap. Vallejo’s tasty drinking water:

• meets or exceeds all the state and federal requirements for drinking water;

• lacks the hundreds of thousands of nanoplastics in a single bottle; and

• tastes great!

Your very own Vallejo tap water is the best choice to stay hydrated on Earth Day (and every day)! It’s as good for your wallet as it is for the environment. Celebrate this year’s Earth Day by making the pledge to drink more water from the tap and less from a bottle.

Pets of the week

CHICKPEA

Terrier, female, adult

Meet darling Chickpea! This beautiful blonde 5-year-old Terrier mix is ready for her closeup – and her forever home! Chickpea loves a good belly rub and is sure to doze off into a heavenly Zen nap at the first stroke of your fingers. She's good with other dogs her size and gives and receives kisses with equal zeal. Chickpea is affectionate, happy, and playful! She is also a laid-back girl who makes an ideal office companion or couch cuddler. To set up a meet and greet with Chickpea, go to HSNB.org and fill out our dog adoption interest application.

SHAE

Pit Bull mix, female, young

This playful pup is Shae! She is a 9-monthold ball of energy who loves other dogs and is always up for a play date! In fact, Shae is so fond of play dates, she gets to have them all the time in our HSNB play yard. At only 39 pounds, she frequently plays with much larger dogs and (we believe) she believes she is the same size! Her play style is a bit on the rough and tumble side, but with positive reinforcement training and maturity, she is sure to be a perfect companion in no time! Shae is a champ at on-leash parallel and pack walks and is always wagging her tail and ready to go! If you would like to give this peppy pup a safe and loving forever home, go to HSNB.org and fill out our dog adoption interest application.
