NEWS RELEASE

June 25, 2024

Contact: Mandi Renshaw SolTrans 311 Sacramento St Vallejo, CA 94590 (707) 736-6982

SolTrans’ Move to Paperless Fares Begins Monday, July 1st

Solano County, CA – On Monday, July 1, 2024, Solano County Transit (SolTrans) will eliminate paper passes as a fare payment option on all Local Routes and Express Lines. Paper passes will continue to be accepted on Paratransit buses. This crucial change is part of their broader strategy to modernize public transportation in Solano County and ensure a smoother, more efficient ride for all passengers.

SolTrans already offers several digital fare payment methods to ensure a seamless transition for its riders:

• Token Transit: A user-friendly mobile app allowing riders to purchase and activate passes directly from their smartphones. Simply download the app, purchase your fare, show the activated pass to the driver, and board your bus. It's that easy – Tap, Show, and GO!

• Clipper Card: A versatile contactless smart card that supports both cash value and various passes. The Clipper Card is the all-in-one transit card used for contactless fare payments throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

• Clipper START Card: A means-based fare program that offers a 50% discount for eligible riders.

For those who prefer traditional payment methods, SolTrans will continue to accept exact cash and coins for purchasing one-way fares and day passes onboard all local and express buses.

In November 2023, the SolTrans Board approved the initiative to go paperless. Starting in January 2024, SolTrans staff began extensive outreach efforts to inform and assist riders with the transition. These efforts included hosted events at the Vallejo Transit Center (VTC), where staff provided hands-on assistance and information about the new digital fare options. This proactive approach ensures that riders are well-prepared and comfortable with the upcoming changes.

All SolTrans paper passes expire and are not refundable or exchangeable. Current passes expire Sunday, June 30, 2024, and will no longer be valid for travel after the expiration date.

By embracing digital payment options and eliminating paper passes, SolTrans continues to lead the way in creating a more efficient, eco-friendly public transportation system. We are dedicated to providing our riders with the best possible service and appreciate your support during this transition.

Solano County Transit (SolTrans) has been the public transportation provider for south Solano County since July 2011. SolTrans provides local and SolanoExpress fixed routes and complementary paratransit. The agency is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) governed by a six-member Board of Directors, composed of two representatives from the cities of Benicia and Vallejo, Solano County’s representative on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and a representative from the Solano Transportation Authority.

Miss Vallejo tri-city

at Miss california pageant

How/when/why did you first become interested in becoming Miss Vallejo?

I grew up in Vallejo. My grandparents built their house here. I’ve always loved this city, growing up it felt like it was always calling my name. Last September, I received a few texts and flyers from friends encouraging me to sign up for a chance to compete in “Miss Vallejo/ Tri-City” for a $1500 scholarship. At the time, that felt like a miracle and a blessing I was finally ready for. Almost like a higher power was telling me that my last few years of hard work was not meant to go unnoticed. I was in need of a goal to work towards and the pageant became just that.

Please explain the Pageant history and how it has developed in Vallejo and Solano County. Where does the current Pageant stand now? How long is your reign? How can future applicants plan for the next one. Does it cost anything to apply and when you are crowned the winner?

This pageant, Miss Vallejo/Tri-City, was founded with clear intentions to uplift, empower and provide opportunity for young women in Vallejo and the

surrounding area.. Executive Director Dr. Lynette Parker saw this as a way for young women to see themselves as royalty - to carry themselves as valued, intelligent young ladies. Dr. Parker also saw the Miss America community service initiative as a way that all young ladies interested in becoming Miss Vallejo/ Tri-City could contribute to improving our community. Many people don’t realize that the Miss America crown has four points. The points stand for Service, Style, Scholarship and Success. These are all something that the young ladies of our community should have.

The second Miss Vallejo/Tri-City pageant is scheduled for November 16, 2024 at the Empress. Sydney will pass on the title to another young lady who cares about the community, has college and career aspirations, and will represent the Vallejo/Tri-City area at the next Miss California competition.

Each titleholder has a reign of typically one year, but that term can be shortened if the titleholder does not adhere to the guidelines (i.e. misrepresents the city, makes poor choices that negatively impact the organization or the community etc.)

What was your experience like in the Miss California pageant? Please provide details on location, dates and highlights.

My experience competing at the 100th Centennial Celebration of Miss California was one for the history books. It was a massive production, all things considered. We had a tech/production crew working around the clock building a runway and hanging chandeliers while also organizing 60 different mics for every contestant's talents. We had “Hostesses” and Directors around every corner helping us with not only our zippers but our peace of mind and eagerness to get on stage. Sabrina Anderson, our brilliant choreographer, helped us have stage presence because at the end of the day, competition aside, we knew we were about to put on a performance.

Notably, I did not walk away with any awards, but I must admit that the friends I did make have taught me the true meaning behind sisterhood. Miss Sonoma County, N’yreh Gibson, and Miss Southland Nyla Davis were close by whenever I needed them, and Miss Tulare County Emily Silva was my partner for the preliminary evening gown walk and sat beside me backstage in our dressing room. My Executive Director Dr. Lynette Parker and my coach & mentor (and former Miss Colorado 2018) Ellery Jones are two of my biggest supporters, and people I look up to greatly. Without them, my family, and my close friends, I would not be where I am today. And thanks to them, I eagerly look forward to tomorrow.

What would you like to accomplish as Miss Vallejo? What have been your best accomplishments so far?

My Community Service Initiative is close to my heart, and truthfully, one of the parts I think the Miss America Organization should focus on more altogether. Though every girl needs one to compete, my specific topic (that I chose after careful consideration) is Accessibility Justice. Moving forward with members of local councils and having open communication with our community would help me tremendously in making notable progress in the lives of those living with a disability. While competing at Miss California, I had the chance to reflect about my CSI and I came to a bit of a conclusion (granted, I happened to be mid-interview with the Judge’s Panel) but it went something like “I think our fault in society now is our obsession with labels. We do not seek to help the disabled because we do not wish disability on ourselves. But should

we ignore the label, and the need to understand everything behind it, we might restore some of our own humanity, something I think we need in order to truly begin making some real progress.”

What are your future dreams? (If you don’t mind us asking, what is your age? Where do you attend school?)

I aspire to work in the film industry! In fact I already had films accepted into national and international film festivals. I study Film Production at Diablo Valley College, after a few semesters of Social Justice at Solano Community. Realistically, getting my degree is a major goal for me, but the wishful thinking in me knows that I want to do more with my life, a lot of which is kind of unknown to me right now. I think right now, I chose to live my life unafraid, and rather, enthralled by the possibilities that exist in the world today.

I applied for one of the local grants with the hope of bringing a Film Festival to Vallejo as part of one of the cultural contributions associated with my reign, but we never heard back. So, I assume we didn’t get it, but it is still a goal of mine to bring film to the the community.

How can the Vallejo Community best support you in your endeavors as Miss Vallejo?

Come to the next pageant! Seeing a full auditorium at the next Miss Vallejo/Tri-City is what we really need and I have no doubt we can achieve this. But I wish to thank the Vallejo Community for all of the love and support I feel every day. I think we work hard as a city and as a family to grow together, support each other, and make a name for ourselves. This city inspires me everyday, and it is in my best interest to continue to do the same.

Also, we always need donations. The program is completely volunteer run. Dr. Lynette Parker, and all the others who work on putting the pageant together and managing the bookings and appearances do this completely because they believe in the work. So we rely on donations, ticket sales, and program ads to ensure that we have the scholarships and stipends for the delegates.
