ANDREW'S ANNOUNCEMENTS
A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
Hello Vallejo!
As the weather warms up again, it’s time to start planning for all the fun events the City offers this summer, including the Bay Area Butterfly Festival and 4th of July Parade. You’ll find information on these events in the Vallejo Weekly, including how to register to participate in the parade! Also, please note that the date for the City of Vallejo Blood Drive has changed from May 21st to May 23. The Red Cross apologizes for the need to change the date due to equipment issues, but please check out the flyer in this Weekly to sign up for an appointment if you haven’t already done so.
Please enjoy the short article on musical artist LaRussell riding SolTrans and engaging with local leaders and the community. You will also find a staff spotlight for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage
Month, along with other fun events that took place this past week such as our staff Public Works Week celebration and a visit from Future Leadership Vallejo to City Hall.
As you may have seen in the City Council meeting Tuesday, Public Works and our Planning Department have many upcoming projects that will continue through the summer, such as working with our partners to improve SR-37, Fairgrounds Drive, and SR29. We will be providing more Staff Briefs in the coming weeks with updates on these key projects.
With appreciation,
Andrew Murray Vallejo City Manager

LARUSSELL
rolled through Vallejo last week, bringing the community together in true hometown fashion. Hopping on the SolTrans bus, he covered the fare for everyone who wanted to ride along—turning a routine trip into a rolling meetand-greet. With Mayor Sorce, Supervisor James, and Councilmember Gordon by his side, he welcomed more people to the family, connecting with fans, making new friends, and cruising through the streets that shaped him. And he’s not stopping there. With plans to hit the road again, he’s hoping even more people will jump on board— not just for the ride, but for the movement. As he says, “The extra mile is usually where the traffic dies down.”

State Route 37/Fairgrounds Drive Interchange
Vallejo Construction Shifts into Gear - May 2025
Watch for Traffic Lane Shifts/Overnight Ramp Closures
The Solano Transportation Authority (STA), in close coordination with its transportation partner, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), has started construction work on the new State Route 37 (SR 37)/Fairgrounds Drive Interchange Project in Vallejo. The interchange improvement project will enhance motorist safety and improve bicycle and pedestrian access with construction of a new divergent diamond interchange. This is the first-ever divergent diamond interchange (DDI) constructed in the Bay Area and only the second-ever constructed on a major highway in California.
What to Expect During Initial Construction Work
Construction at SR 37 and Fairgrounds Drive recently started construction in April 2025. The site is near the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Theme Park and the Solano County Fairgrounds. Major public impacts to SR 37 and Fairgrounds Drive are scheduled to start in May 2025. In the coming weeks, motorists will begin to see lane traffic shifts, overnight ramp closures, tree removal, signage installation, and various temporary lane closures.
The following construction-related activities are set to happen starting in May 2025.
• Motorists on Fairgrounds Drive at SR 37 should watch for temporary traffic lane shifts.
• Eastbound on and off ramps at SR 37/Fairgrounds Drive will be closed overnight with detours. Closures are scheduled from 10:00 PM until 5:00 AM.
• The westbound off-ramp from SR 37 to Fairgrounds Drive will be closed nightly from 11:00 PM – 5:00 AM.
• The SolTrans bus stop at the on-ramp to Westbound SR 37 will be temporarily relocated a few feet away. Motorists should drive with caution in construction zones and expect travel delays. All work is weather dependent. For general questions, please email our project team at: SR37-FairgroundsPIO@portal3.pbid.com.
STA and Caltrans will provide additional project details as soon as information becomes available.
STA and Caltrans thank the motoring public for its patience and understanding as we work to improve and maintain our state’s highways.

Meet the Team for AAPI month!
Matt Herrera, Public Works Senior Engineering Tech
This week, we’re shining a light on Matt as part of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. His story is a reminder of Vallejo’s rich diversity and the importance of learning about different cultures.
Originally from Agat, Guam, Matt proudly embraces his Chamorro heritage—a legacy instilled by his parents. Vallejo has a vibrant Guamanian community, and their traditions have become an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric.
Matt joined the city in 2009, starting as an electrician before earning certifications to become a Signal Tech II. His experience led him to City Hall, where he now serves as a Senior Engineering Tech.
Though Vallejo isn’t his birthplace, it has been his home since 1975. Growing up in South Vallejo’s Beverly Hill neighborhood, sports were a huge part of his childhood—playing until the streetlights came on. Baseball was his passion, and while he’s now more of a spectator, he still enjoys fishing and camping with his family.
A self-proclaimed foodie, Matt loves eggs, rice, and protein topped with Tabasco—but anything over rice is a win. He’s a fan of Vallejo’s local eats, from sushi to taco trucks. His music taste leans toward ’80s R&B, but his wife and son have broadened his playlist to include artists like Teddy Swims and Sarah McLachlan. His biggest inspiration? His wife and son—the reason he strives to be better every day.
If he had a magic wand, he’d make kindness a law, believing that small acts of goodwill could transform the world. To improve Vallejo, he suggests creating more opportunities for kids, like the sports and events that shaped his own childhood.
Though not multilingual, Matt wishes he spoke Chamorro fluently. He does know one key phrase: Hafa Adai! (Hah-fuh-day)—a warm Chamorro greeting. Closing out his thoughts on AAPI Heritage Month, Matt shared:
“Vallejo recognizes all the different cultures, making it one of the most unique, diverse cities in the world. I love this city!”

PG&E provides this update on restoration work occurring in the boat launch parking lot that is part of a larger 26-acre City of Vallejo-owned property at the corner of Curtola Parkway and Sonoma Boulevard (site). This is the last step of the restoration work associated with PG&E’s former Vallejo Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) environmental cleanup project. In December 2023, PG&E completed cleanup work under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to address impacts from a gas plant that operated at the site from 1872 to 1930. To learn more about this project, or if you have questions, please contact us at the email address or phone number listed below.

• Placed sealant, striping and wheel stops on paved parking lot
• Finished removing office trailers and the majority of heavy equipment from the site.
Upcoming Work
• In the next few weeks, a small crew will return to install a short section of water main pipe along the south side of Curtola Parkway and finish landscaping activities in that area.
• The larger crew will return this summer to construct the restroom building and install EV charging stations at the parking lot.

• Air monitoring results to date have confirmed that air quality remained at levels protective of the health of the surrounding community.
Work Hours
• 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
