TheCityisexcitedtoannounce that Travis Hultin, PE, has been selected to be our new Public Works (PW) Director. TravishasbeenourChiefEngineer for 20 years, including six years as Deputy PW Director,andhashadaverylong andsuccessfulcareerwiththe City.Travisstartedworkingfor theCityasacollegeinternwhile he was getting his Civil Engineering Degree from Oregon StateUniversity.

In 1996 the Citywas so impressedwithhisworkasan internthathewashiredfora full-timecivilengineeringposition as soon as he graduated.TravisisalifelongOregonian, growing up on the southernOregoncoast.

Inadditiontohisdutieshere attheCity,Travis’sengineeringandpublicworksexperience includes serving from 2008-2013asaTechnical

Leadwith Engineers Without Borders, designing and installing water treatment for municipal water systems in theremotecommunityofLes Anglais, Haiti. As Public Works Director, Travis will oversee the Water, Streets, Wastewater,Parks,andEngineering divisions. Slowdown!It’sthelaw.Whenyou speed,youareendangeringeveryoneontheroad.In2020,speeding wasacontributingfactorin 29percentofall trafficfatalities.

DeputyNick Bohrerhasbeenparticularly focusedontrafficsafety.Heuses acombinationofdataandneighborhoodcomplaintstoinform proactiveenforcementmeasures. TheMultnomahCountySheriff’s Office(MCSO)willalsocontinue touseexistingstateandfederal grantstosupportenforcement aroundspeedingandobeying lights and signals.

MCSOisaskingforthepublic’scontinuedvigilanceaboutphone scamsimpersonatinglawenforcementofficers.Inoneinstance, apersonreportedlosing$4,500.

Mostcommonly, the scam calls are from someone posing as an MCSO sergeant or deputy. It’s been reported that the scammer claimstherecipienthasawarrant,unpaidcourtfinesorhasmissed jury duty and must pay a fine with a gift card immediately or be arrested.Often,atacticofthescammersistokeepthepersonon the phone during the entire process and tell the person theyare not allowedto contactfamilyorfriends for advice. Once the scammer receives payment, they then often tell the person they cancometoanMCSOofficeforreimbursementorareceipt.

This newtool is a simple online form that will allow citizens to report problems with city-owned streets (damagedsigns,floodedstormdrains,roaddebris,etc.). Troutdale Flood 1948: 75 Years Later

The City of Troutdale has lived through several flood events in its 116-year history.Wewillcelebratebyrememberinghowwesurvived.

TheTroutdaleHistoricalSociety(THS)willholditsannualmeetingonSunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. at the Sam Cox Building at Glenn Otto Community Park, locatedat1102EastHistoricColumbiaRiverHighway.AllTHSmembersand thepublicareinvitedtoattend.

THSannualbusinesswillbefollowedbyapresentationontheTroutdale Flood, 1948: 75 Years Later byLenOtto. Seventy-fiveyearsago,acatastrophicflood destroyed the entire town of Vanport, Oregon.The effects thosewho experiencedthisdisasterwereaffectedlongafterthewatersreceded.LongtimeTHS treasurer,thelateTedSchulte,carriedaflockofchickenstohispoultryhouse and fed them upstairs. Len Otto will commemorate this historic event with photosandpersonalstoriesofthosewholivedthroughthefloodof1948.
