Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

Criticize, ridicule, and lie about those who don't meet their standards of acceptance regarding race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, economic background, and any other criteria they condone. Bullying may be done in person, via electronic communication or on the phone.

Older Adults Can Be Bullies, Too Today we often read about cyberbullies among young people, but bullying also plagues senior centers, senior apartments, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Between 10 and 20 percent of residents in senior care homes are mistreated by peers, says Robin Bonifas, an Arizona State University gerontology expert.

Bullies may be male or female, young or old, rich or poor. Their reasons for bullying even vary from anger to a desire to dominate others to the need to build themselves up by putting others down. They come in many shapes and sizes, but some similarities occur among bullies. Often bullies lack empathy and give little thought to actual damage that their words and actions cause. They feel the need to dominate others, but often bully those who are weaker or less likely to fight back.

These are some hurtful actions of "mature" bullies: 1. Block off seats for their little cliques at mealtimes and events. Common adult bullying methods include isolating an individual, dismissing a person’s ideas or ignoring someone completely.

3. Steal and destroy property to flaunt their power and harass victims.

4. Physically abuse victims by pushing, hitting, punching, or kicking them. They sometimes justify this as an "accident."

Bullying among older adults gets less attention generally than among children and adolescents because it is generally verbal rather than physical. Often, a person doesn’t even understand why he or she has been chosen for bullying. Usually it involves behaviors such as shunning/excluding someone, “You can’t sit here - I am saving this for a friend,” or sarcasm and pointed verbal comments targeting their victim or spreading gossip and rumors.

However, it can lead to physical violence as in the September 2009 case of a 100-year-old nursing home resident in Dartmouth, MA, who was killed by her 98-year-old roommate. The 98-year-old thought her roommate was “taking over the room” and was reportedly jealous at the number of visitors the victim had.

Fortunately bullying in older adults doesn’t usually lead to such tragedies but it all too often creates great distress for the victims and can cause or increase depression and anxiety.

axãáM Case Management Services All staff in Senior Centers, Apartment Managers, Senior Center participants, apartment & long term care residents, and families need to be committed to promoting equality and respect and to have zero tolerance for bullying. At all ages empathy is the best antidote for bullying. Hopefully the new emphasis in schools on preventing bullying will make the next generation of older adults more empathic and ensure that there will be one less indignity that our elders need to fear.

What can be done? All of the following strategies should be utilized against bullying. One strategy isn’t typically enough to overcome a bully permanently.

Realize that bullying is taking place. Victims of bullies may wonder why they’re being targeted and even accept bullying as something deserved.

Bullies thrive on projecting their problems on victims. Bullying isn’t ever acceptable and is never the fault of the victim.

One of the greatest defenses against bullying is support and communication. Individuals who isolate themselves and don’t have a support system of family and friends are more likely to become the targets of bullying. A support system allows a person to be more confident about exposing bully behavior. In some cases, speaking out against a bully, with other supporters present, solves the issue quickly because bullies prefer victims who suffer in silence.

Respond in support of those whom you notice are being bullied – Albert Einstein once stated, The world is a dangerous place; not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. Standing up for a bully victim helps others stand confidently as well.

Get counseling to deal with the mental health issues that are often related to bullying. Both bullies and their victims need mental health help to overcome their roles. If you’ve been bullied and choose not to get professional help, you may find yourself the target of ongoing or new bullying.

Older adults struggle with exposing bullies, often feeling that they won’t be believed or that the bully will respond more harshly. If you need help handling a bullying situation, please contact a Case Manager at the Stoughton Senior Center at 873-8585.

Is celebrated each May to honor and recognize older Americans for the contributions they make to our families, communities and society. Keep a documentation journal –a written journal documenting the bullying allows the victim to begin gaining control and creates a tool for exposing the bully.

Rhubarb the “Pie Plant” Rhubarb has edible, long, fleshy petioles.

It is classified as a vegetable. Because of its versatility, rhubarb can be used for baking pies, cakes, muffins, breads, cookies, bars and squares, and more!

Nutritionally, it is low in calories. (1 cup contains about 26 calories.)

The “pie plant” contains a fair amount of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, dietary fiber and calcium. Unfortunately the calcium content it supplies is bound by oxalic acid and is not easily absorbed by the body. Calcium from plant sources is not usually absorbed by the body as well as calcium from dairy products.

Recipe of the Month Quick Rhubarb Pickles Recipe from Rachael Ray Makes 3 jars (10 ounces) 2 cups cider vinegar 1 ½ cups sugar 1 ½ tablespoon coarse salt ½ teaspoon yellow mustard seeds 10 whole cloves 10 whole black peppercorns 1 piece (1 ½ inch long) fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced 1 lemon 1 pound fresh rhubarb, cut crosswise into ¾ inch pieces.

In a nonreactive medium saucepan, combine vinegar, sugar, salt, mustard seeds, cloves and peppercorns. Cook over medium heat stirring occasionally, until the sugar is just dissolved, about 5 minutes. Add the ginger, then use a vegetable peeler to slice strips of zest from the lemon; add to the saucepan.

Let the liquid cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes.

Divide the rhubarb into 3 clean, small glass jars.

Ladle in the cooled brine mixture. Top with the lids and refrigerate the pickles for 2 days before eating.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday. In 2011, there were 19,671 meals delivered.

Cost of Meals : Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation.

The minimum suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal.

Meal Site: $6.15 Delivered Meal: $6.40.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00pm the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.

You may know someone with a chronic or serious illness who’s trying to manage their own care.

They would benefit from the coordinated care associated with hospice, but they’re not eligible for hospice services.

Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation Grapevine Project Classes at the Stoughton Area Senior Center The goals are to help women and their families reach their healthiest potential and become advocates for their own health and improve the overall quality of life for women and their families.

They provide programs that focus on education, prevention, and early detection. Two parish nurses from Stoughton are bringing the Grapevine health programs to us. Sue Richards, Parish Nurse at Covenant Lutheran Church and Jane Jenson, Faith Community Nurse at Lake View Church are partnering to provide the following units to women at the Stoughton Senior Center : MAY 24 at 1:00 PM: Oral Health: Women receive information on oral health and how it affects your overall health. A toothbrush and toothpaste will be given.

JUNE 28 at 1:00 PM: Bone Health: Women receive information on osteoporosis including signs, symptoms and how to prevent it. Exercise bands for weightbearing and muscle-strengthening exercises will be given Please register for the class at 873-8585

Are you interested in taking a floral design class at the Senior Center? Cost would be $10.00 for the class and flowers. The class will be meeting Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 pm.
