Greetings to you, the lucky finder of this 2021-2022 season brochure, from the Stoughton Opera House Staff! An extra special greetings and thank you to all of our member donors. Your generosity was key in the Opera House making it through the last 18 months.

The coming season of shows has the rare distinction of being years in the making, and we think you will not be disappointed. In fact, despite the enormity of scheduling the 2021–22 performances, we have still found time to prepare some surprises for you!

Something we’re particularly excited about is our beautiful Ghost Light Lounge, located on the first floor of the Opera House. The Ghost Light Lounge will be open before, during, and after Opera House performances and will offer various refreshments including regional beers, wine and cider! The Lounge will also host pre-show performances by local artists and provide an extra comfy respite for your behinds (complete with a video feed from the theater) during the shows.

We’ve also installed a robust video streaming system during the last six months. The best part? We will be able to provide a home viewing option for many of the shows in our 2021–22 schedule! We know that some of you may not be ready to return to in-person events…or maybe you just don’t get out as much as you used to. Shows with a streaming option will be announced as we approach the date of each performance, so keep an eye on our website for more details if you’re interested in that option. We will always provide picture and sound that makes watching from home almost as good as what you’ve come to expect when attending the theater in person.

For the health and safety of those attending in person we will be following the most up-to-date health guidelines from Dane County throughout the entire season. Visiting our website before you come to visit will be the best way to keep on top of what to expect. If you have had a wait and see attitude on vaccines then a wait and see attitude on indoor concerts is probably safest for you!

As you’re looking through the many offerings listed here please keep in mind that some of these shows originally went on-sale in August of 2019 and may already be sold-out! Head over to our website to see which shows are already on-sale. If you have tickets from a previously scheduled date for these shows you do not need to take any action—just come for the show on the date listed here.

There is so much to look forward to this season—and even more shows to be added to the spring. One of the best ways to spend more time at the Opera House than your budget will allow is to volunteer. It is super easy to get involved by calling the Box Office or heading to our website—we can use all the help we can get!

Blood Harmony. Whether it’s The Beach Boys, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit, that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music.The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase, gorgeous harmonies, and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered), not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Joe Troop Trio

Thur. Sept. 23 • 7:30 pm Joe Troop is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

During his decade in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he formed the group Che Apalache with three of his students. The band’s second album, Rearrange My Heart, was produced by legendary genre-bender, banjoist Béla Fleck and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Folk Album in 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made international touring all but impossible, forcing Che Apalache into hiatus.

Working in a style dubbed “latingrass,” Joe melds music from the Appalachian foothills with traditional soundscapes from across Latin American. He composes wry and well-traveled acoustic music, sung in English and Spanish. Wrenching old-time music into the world of contemporary global politics, Joe creates spaces for sympathy, solidarity, and a little humor. His new solo album featuring Charlie Hunter, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Tim O’Brien and many more superb musicians will be released in late summer. www.joetroop.com

Dan Tyminski Band Fri. Sept. 24 • 7:30 pm

Throughout his 30+ year career, Dan Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. Since 1994, Tyminski has played guitar and mandolin for Alison Krauss and Union Station. His unmatched instrumental skills and burnished, soulful tenor voice have been key components of the band. Tyminski’s voice famously accompanies George Clooney’s performance of the Stanley Brother’s Classic song, “I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow,” in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou.

His vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey, Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed over 1 billion times to date.

Dan has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards from 18 nominations, was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association four times and was recognized as 2004’s Male Vocalist of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America. Round up your herd and join in the fun with America’s favorite singing cowboys! Adorned in colorful Western wear, this quartet of madcap cowpokes consists of Ranger Doug—Idol of American Youth; Too Slim—the Fastest Wit in the West; Woody Paul—King of the Cowboy Fiddlers; and Joey—the CowPolka King. Perpetual crowd-pleasers, this Grammy-winning quartet mixes authentic Western music with yodeling, rope tricks, and a whole heap of crackpot humor in the timeless tradition of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. For the last 4 years, Dailey & Vincent have brought their multi-award winning American Music (bluegrass, traditional country and gospel) to a national television audience on their top-rated, national, weekly television show, The Dailey & Vincent Show on RFD TV. It’s cinematic and sweeping- with literary references, reflections on nature and above all the ability to transport you to a memory, a place in time or somewhere you saw in a dream with vivid lucidity. Like a film director, she works as an aural auteur building scenes with her rapturous voice and the plaintive plucks of her guitar strings. With these ten songs, the Nebraska-raised singersongwriter immediately establishes herself as a formidable talent with her deeply felt folk-indebted sound and inquisitive, empathetic lyrics. Over the course of the past 15 years, Jake Shimabukuro has challenged and changed all notions of what was possible with a ukulele. But on his latest album, Trio, the acclaimed musician begins a bold and exciting new chapter in his already remarkable career.

Unlike previous releases on which Shimabukuro sometimes utilized studio musicians recording songs he’d already written, Trio is radically different: It’s a true band album.

The only sounds on the record are performed by himself, bassist Nolan Verner and guitarist Dave Preston, and many of the songs were composed spontaneously in the studio. In this way, Trio lives up to its title as a fully immersive document of the sonic alchemy the three musicians achieve on stage.

“I really wanted to capture the sound that we make when we jam together,” Shimabukuro explains.

Fans already know the chemistry between Palmer’s Midwestern charm, those long winters spent listening to a steady diet of Townes Van Zandt and John Hartford, and Kendl’s poetic and playful way with words. Aoife O’Donovan with String Quartet Songs and Strings Sat. Oct. 9 • 7:30 pm

Grammy award-winning songwriter and musician Aoife O’Donovan is one of the most sought-after singers and songwriters of her generation. She has released 3 critically-acclaimed solo albums, is co-founder of the bands I’m With Her and Crooked Still, is the featured vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile, and spent a decade contributing to the radio variety shows “Live From Here” and “A Prairie Home Companion. Crystal Bowersox, a northwest Ohio native currently calling Nashville home, has built her life around music. Crystal’s love for music developed at an early age from a need to find peace in a chaotic world.

Through art and creation, Crystal was able to direct her energy and emotion, finding a way to mend a mind in turmoil. For her, music was always the most effective form of catharsis, and she would play for anyone, anywhere. In her own words, “my guitar was an appendage. Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings Thur. Oct. 14 • 7:30 pm

For nearly 30 years Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings have continued to bring the blues to its legions of fans around the world. He was indeed named for the singing cowboy. A singer, himself, and also a master slide guitarist with a distinctive and instantly recognizable style, Rogers has recorded with Miles Davis, Taj Mahal and recorded two albums together in a band with former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. As a producer he is perhaps best known for John Lee Hooker’s classic comeback album The Healer featuring Bonnie Raitt, Santana, Los Lobos and more which earned a Grammy Award.

: Taj Mahal doesn’t wait for permission. If a sound intrigues him, he sets out to make it. If origins mystify him, he moves to trace them. If rules get in his way, he unapologetically breaks them. To Taj, convention means nothing, but traditions are holy. He has pushed music and culture forward, all while looking lovingly back.

“I just want to be able to make the music that I’m hearing come to me—and that’s what I did,” Taj says. The 76-year-old is home in Berkeley, reflecting on six decades of music making. “When I say, ‘I did,’ I’m not coming from the ego. The music comes from somewhere. Legendary musician Bob Mould announces his “Distortion and Blue Hearts!” tour starting September 16, 2021, in Boston at Paradise. The tour is in two parts. In 2017, Ivor Novello Award-winning and Grammy Awardnominated legend Richard Thompson gave himself up to the music itself. A cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, norteño, punk, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa, formed in Denver by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass) and percussionist Shawn King, emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s infusing modern indie music with a global flavor.

They found widespread success in 2006 with their Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with revered indie, Anti-, the band delivered A Mad and Faithful Telling in early 2008, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. A lengthy world tour followed, including stops at major festivals like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Bumbershoot. After doing more soundtrack work, this time for the 2009 comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, the group returned to the studio for 2011’s moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. Embarking on another world tour, they collaborated with the Colorado Symphony on the 2012 concert album Live with the Colorado Symphony. Over the next several years, Urata became increasingly involved in his own film composition career, scoring movies like Crazy Stupid Love, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Paddington, and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. Meanwhile, the band regrouped for a lengthy recording session, eventually returning in 2018 with their sixth album, This Night Falls Forever, this time via Concord Records. www.devotchka.net

The Jayhawks and their rootsy sound were definitely swimming against the tide when they emerged from a crowded Minnesota music scene in 1985. Over the course of almost 4 decades, 11 albums, countless memorable live shows and enough personal drama to fill a couple of Behind the Music episodes, this beloved band soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics, fans and peers in the process. After releasing two Indie albums in the 80s The Jayhawks signed with American Recordings in 1991 and over the next decade released 5 challenging, at times groundbreaking, albums, toured the world to widespread acclaim and even survived the departure of founding member Mark Olson in 1995. After a hiatus in the mid 2000s, the “classic” 1994 lineup reunited for another new studio album in 2011 and 2 years of solid touring, reacquainting audiences old and new with the band’s timeless musical vision. 2014 saw a late 90s version of the band led

by Gary Louris hitting the road to support the reissues of the 3 Jayhawks albums released from 1997-2003. This lineup released the band’s 9th studio album in 2016, recorded in Portland, OR with producers Peter Buck and Tucker Martine. The band’s next studio album, Back Roads And Abandoned Motels, was released in the summer of 2018, featuring Jayhawks versions of songs Gary Louris had previously written with other artists plus 2 new compositions. He’s also a well-known painter whose work has been shown throughout the country, and who contributed the cover and tray card paintings for their new album, Hang It High, Hang It Low. Keyboardist Nathan Williams Jr. is enrolled in the music program at the University of South Louisiana, while he leads his own band in the Lafayette area. Rubboard player Mark Williams is a cousin who has been with the band since its inception. Manager Sid ‘El Sid O’ Williams, the eldest Williams brother, is an entrepreneur who has built a remarkable network of businesses in Lafayette, whie honing his skills as an accordion contender himself.

Wisconsin’s favorite bestselling humorist and author Michael Perry returns with his band the Long Beds for a night of music, storytelling, and laughter. Perry began writing songs in the early 1990s during long nights when he was struggling to survive on prose. Often described as “country folk,” “roughneck folk,” “folk-twang,” and Americana, they prefer the description given by an audience member after a benefit concert in Perry’s old high school gym: “You sound just like Gordon Lightfoot...only zippier!”

Perry has co-written or collaborated with musicians including Phil Cook, Justin Vernon, Sean Carey, Mary Cutrufello, and Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Geoffrey Keezer, but not until he met producer (and Long Beds’ musical director) Evan Middlesworth did he learn to play a “cheater” B minor. In the fall of 2019, Michael Perry & The Long Beds released Long Road to You, an EP featuring five freshly-recorded songs and a spoken word piece from the Long Beds headlining stint on 2019’s Wisconsin Vinyl Collective tour. American Songwriter describes Eilen Jewell as one of America’s most intriguing, creative, and idiosyncratic voices. Drawing on music extracted from Scandinavian folk, bluegrass, Celtic songs, Eastern and blues folk tunes, Appalachian, Brazilian, ragtime, as well as modern acoustic artists, MadFiddle brings students between the ages of six and seventeen together for a romping, stomping, good time. MadFiddle is directed by the Madison Area Music Association’s 2016 “Teacher of the Year,” Shauncey Ali, and accompanied by the energetic adult backing band, Highway 151 which consists of Chris Powers on mandolin and bouzouki, Pat Spaay on upright bass, and Bruce Anderson on guitar. Over the Rhine

May 7 • 7:30 pm When you listen to Over the Rhine, the supremely talented musical couple comprised of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice “which has the power to stop the world in its tracks” (Performing Songwriter). But then the songs start hitting you. Paste magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters.

Janis Ian Last North American Tour: The End of the Line Fri. May 13 • 7:30 pm

Now in her fifth decade of writing songs and performing, Janis received her most recent Grammy nomination in 2016 for the self-produced “Patience & Sarah”, an audio book she produced and co-narrated with the actress Jean Smart (“Designing Women”.) This makes a total of 10 nominations in 8 different categories, a record for a solo artist whose first nomination came at the age of 16 for her debut album, Janis Ian. Ian’s tours have sold out in every country she’s visited, and her songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as John Mellencamp, Amy Grant, Diane Schuur, and Joan Baez. Janis has dueted with Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Mel Torme and, most recently, Trevor Sewell; their single, released only in the UK, jumped up the jazz charts, again reminding us of the diversity in a career that saw Ian on the cover of Downbeat at 16, featured in Melody Maker at 26, honored by the Grammy Hall of Fame twice, co-starring with Laurie Metcalf, Rita Moreno, and Alex Borstein in the final episode of Getting On, receiving Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews picks for her children’s book The Tiny Mouse, and continuing to expand and move forward with plans for several more books and a new album in the works. Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society with New England Ragtime Ensemble

Fri. June 24 • 7:30 pm Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society is now in its twenty-first season of bringing chamber music with a bang to enthusiastic audiences in Madison and south-central Wisconsin. Since 1992 flutist Stephanie Jutt and pianist Jeffrey Sykes have been inviting other world-class musicians to join them in a three-week summer festival that puts the element of “play” back into chamber music, showing that chamber music concerts, often serious to the point of stuffiness, can be both serious and fun at the same time. www.bachdancing.org

New England Ragtime Ensemble

One of the most distinctive contributions America has made to the world of music is ragtime, a musical style that developed in AfricanAmerican communities in the late nineteenth century and took the world by storm. Ragtime features distinctive rhythmic syncopations that are very complex yet catchy—syncopations that greatly influenced the development of jazz. The style was popularized by “the King of Ragtime,” African-American composer Scott Joplin, through his hits “The Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer.”

Over the years there have been many revivals of the ragtime style, but none more successful than the New England Ragtime Ensemble.

Founded by Gunther Schuller at the New England Conservatory, the group won Grammys for best chamber music performance and classical album of the year. Flutist Stephanie Jutt was a founding member of the NERE, and she is reconvening the ensemble for BDDS audiences.
