Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their own homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

Equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and other items may be checked out on a short-term basis to those residing in our case management service area (Stoughton, Town of Albion and Town of Dunkirk). Call or stop in for details.

News: Case Management Services Information PROPER ORAL CARE FOR SENIORS IS VERY CRITICAL Research has shown that tooth brushing and dental visits prevent death from pneumonia, especially aspiration pneumonia.

Oral hygiene reduces the chronic inflammation that periodontal (gum) disease causes, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease and strokes. Contact your dentist today for an exam.

MEDICARE PART D OPEN ENROLLMENT GIVES OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE MONEY Open enrollment for Medicare D plans in 2016 is October 15 through December 7, 2015. This is the time that Medicare beneficiaries who are enrolled in Part D prescription drug plans can review their plan to determine if it is still the best one for them. Because insurance companies can change their premiums, deductibles and co-pays, switching to a different plan often results in extra money in your pocket.

DEANCARE GOLD INSURANCE PLAN NEWS Individuals will no longer be able to enroll in a DeanCare Gold plan on or after November 1, 2015. Individuals who are already enrolled in DeanCare Gold prior to that date will be grandfathered in and maintain coverage under their plan. Individuals who want to enroll in a DeanCare Gold plan should do so ASAP before change takes effect.

Dean will be offering a Medicare Advantage Plan in 2016. Information on this plan is scheduled to be released in early October. Those who would like to enroll in the Advantage Plan can do so in the Medicare Open Enrollment Period October 15 -December 7. 2015 CASE MANAGEMENT SURVEY Dane County Department of Human Services is administering the Case Management Satisfactory Survey again this year. Randomly selected seniors who received Case Management Services this year (January thru August 2015) will be receiving a survey in the mail in early October.

If you receive a survey, please take a few minutes to complete it and return the survey in the enclosed self-addressed, stamped envelope.

If you have had changes in your medications this past year it seems obvious that looking into a different plan is a good idea. But even if you have not had medication changes, sometimes the different pricing structure an insurance company imposes will mean that the costs for your same drugs will increase next year. Likewise, a different company may now offer better coverage for those same medications. Some people have saved hundreds of dollars in a year by switching to a different Part D plan.

Insurance companies can also change their formularies (the list of medications that they cover) or change the way they cover your medication. In some cases, you will need to get prior authorization before your medication is covered. Sometimes, insurance companies will make you try an alternative drug before they pay for the one you and your doctor have chosen.

This is called step therapy. Another restriction to watch out for is quantity limits, where you are limited to a certain number of pills each month.

These are other reasons it is important to carefully review your Part D plan each year.

People on Senior Care, Wisconsin’s state drug plan, are not affected by this open enrollment period. They only need to renew their enrollment every 12 months. A renewal notice will be sent in the mail to the beneficiary. If you are on Senior Care and have had medication changes, you might want to check on the cost of a part D plan to see if Senior Care is still the best option for you.

Another avenue to saving money on prescription drugs next year is the Extra Help program.

Extra Help reduces your drug costs by decreasing premiums, deductibles, and co-pays for medication based on your income and asset levels. If you are married and your income is less than $1991 per month with assets below $24,250 or single with an income less than $1,471 per month and assets below $12,140 you may qualify for Extra Help. Remember that your home and car are not counted as assets. Call the Stoughton Area Senior Center Case Managers at 873-8585 for more information.

The federal Food and Nutrition Service Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has notified states that there have been reports of the general public receiving unsolicited calls from what appears to be the SNAP toll free information hotline number at 1-800-221-5689.

The unsolicited callers are requesting personal information; offering assistance for filling out a SNAP application or other non-SNAP related services such as home security systems. Never provide personal information or your credit card number over the phone to unsolicited callers.

Health Benefits of Peanut Butter

It helps you lose weight Calling peanut butter a diet food, with 180 to 210 calories per serving, may seem counter-intuitive.

But it has the enviable combination of fiber (2 g per serving) and protein (8 g per serving) that fills you up and keeps you feeling full longer, so you eat less overall. Plus, there's nothing more indulgent than licking peanut butter off a spoon-and indulgence (in moderation) helps dieters fight cravings and stay on track.

It's packed with nutrition A serving of peanut butter has 3 mg of the powerful antioxidant vitamin E, 49 mg of bonebuilding magnesium, 208 mg of muscle-friendly potassium, and 0.17 mg of immunity-boosting vitamin B6. Research shows that eating peanuts can decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic health conditions. One study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that consuming 1 ounce of nuts or peanut butter (about 2 tablespoons) at least 5 days a week can lower the risk of developing diabetes by almost 30%.

It's got the good fat Peanut butter is chock-full of hearthealthy monounsaturated fat. A recent study found that insulin-resistant adults who ate a diet high in monos had less belly fat than people who ate more carbohydrates or saturated fat. PS: If you're buying reduced-fat peanut butter because you think it's better for your waistline, save your money. The calories are the same (or even a little higher) thanks to the extra ingredients that are added to make up for the missing fat (including more sugar).

Homemade Peanut Butter Cups Yield 3 Dozen

1 c. creamy peanut butter, divided ½ Tsp salt 4 ½ Tsp softened butter 2 c. semisweet chocolate chips ½ c. confectioners’ sugar 4 Milk chocolate candy bars, coarsely chopped In a small bowl, combine ½ cup peanut butter, butter, confectioners’ sugar & salt until smooth, set aside. In a pan on the stove, med to low heat, melt chocolate chips, candy bars & remaining peanut butter, stir until smooth. Drop a tsp of chocolate mixture into paper-lined miniature muffin cups. Top each with a scant tsp of peanut butter mixture; top with another tsp of chocolate mixture. Refrigerate until set, store in an air tight container. A “melon ball” spoon, works well.

Nutrition Program Information: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Cancellations and reservations must be made by 1:00 PM on the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the County/Senior Center.

News: COA Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for September 1, 2015 Meetings are Open to the Public

Center News  The Center’s river rock and canoe stand will be replaced soon.  New brochures have been printed for the Friendly Visitor Program (formerly called Peer Support).  The Center’s ads are now in shopping carts at the local Pick’n Save!  The County and City budget processes are beginning; the City has a 0% budgeting yr.

COA Bylaws  COA finished reviewing/updating its Bylaws  Revisions will be emailed for review before they are given to City Council for approval.

Strategic Plan:  Discussed proposed timeline for the Plan to be completed by Summer 2016.  Discussed staff’s proposal to have 5-6 focus groups instead of 10 as we did in 2010.  For Oct,’s meeting, members are asked to look over 2010’s strategic issues and focus group questions, bring ideas for new issues and questions and a list of people to invite.

Legislative Update  WI State SB 19 CARE Act still moving along to help family caregivers when their loved ones are hospitalized—and return home.  Social Security is 80 years old; an AARP survey found that 80% surveyed plan to rely on it as a substantial way to pay bills.
