Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their own homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

Equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and other items may be checked out on a short-term basis to those residing in our case management service area (Stoughton, Town of Albion and Town of Dunkirk). Call or stop in for details.

News: Case Management Services Information Celebrate National Family Caregiver & Alzheimer’s Awareness Month November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness and National Family Caregiver month, The two are undeniably connected. The majority of individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementias have one or more family caregivers during the course of the disease. It is necessary to raise awareness for this disease, an estimated 119,000 people have been diagnosed in Wisconsin alone and that number is expected to grow even higher as the population ages. It is important to acknowledge the important role family caregivers play. Alzheimer’s is often incorrectly seen as a normal part of aging. Though there is no known cure at this time, the disease can be treated, increasing the overall quality of life. Living with a memory or cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s or other dementia can be a journey of worry, frustration and fear of the future. However, with planning and support, you can live each day to its fullest.

Helpful Tips for Planning and Support:  At the first signs of memory difficulties, talk to your doctor about your concerns. You may also want to consult a geriatric specialist or memory assessment clinic to get a thorough cognitive evaluation. A thorough evaluation is important so you understand the course of the illness and appropriate treatment options.  Educate yourself and others. Learning about your diagnosis and how to maintain your abilities and manage symptoms can help you make informed decisions, prepare for the future, and enhance your quality of life.  Stay active and involved in daily life. Continue your usual routine. If you make adaptations to accommodate your changing needs, you should be able to continue your favorite activities.  Get support and use available resources. The support of family and friends and your involve

ment with outside resources can be an enormous help. Ask for and accept help from friends, family, neighbors, and your faith community.

Use community services such as in-home care, adult day services, and financial assistance.  Maintaining your health and well-being may improve your ability to function. Try to focus on what you are doing well. Include fun, laughter and opportunities to learn new things and socialize with others each day.

Top Ten Ways to Help a Caregiver: Here are some ways to nurture our daily heroes in family care giving, not just during the Holidays, but perhaps year-round. Thoughts and actions, no matter how small, truly matter and go a long way in supporting our caregivers!

1. Be a good listener. Just be present. Spend time experiencing life in their shoes, even for a short while. Support and accept, try not to judge.

2. Offer to take over tasks such as walking the dog, mowing the lawn, shoveling the snow or grocery shopping. Help in ways that would specifically benefit them. Even for a set amount of time, this can be a welcome relief to a caregiver.

3. Offer respite time. Give a respite coupon promising a period where you will care for the person’s loved one while they take time for themselves.

4.Stay in touch, show you care. A card, a call or a visit can mean a lot. Even well-placed humor can be invaluable! (continued on page 4)

News: Case Management Information 5. Plan a picnic or dinner at your place. Or, if they are unable to get out, arrange for a meal to be delivered. Present that with a bottle of wine or a homemade dessert 6. Educate yourself about the disease the caregiver’s loved one has been diagnosed with.

Learn about the disease, its effects and best ways to respond. (consider LEEPS, p. 10) 7. Buy pre-paid coupons for transportation services such as taxis, medical vans, and wheelchair-accessible vans. Or, offer a ride to appointments if needed.

8. Choose books or subscribe to magazines for them. Consider something practical such as a book on care giving or on the particular diagnosis or problem. Or, consider something fun to give the reader as a break from everyday responsibilities.

9. The gift of assistive technology can aid caregiving. These may include walkers, raised toilet seats, large button phones, intercoms or personal alert systems.

10. Encourage a healthy lifestyle. Cook a healthy meal together, meet to take a walk.

Include the person whenever possible on fun, active or educational events. Focus on strengths and positives, not on weaknesses and negatives.

Re-examine Your Medicare Coverage Every Year!

It’s that time of year again! From October 15 through December 7, Medicare beneficiaries can re-evaluate Medicare prescription drug and health plans. Plan features—including premiums, copays, drug formularies, provider networks, and other details —can and often do change each year. Some plans will no longer operate in Wisconsin in 2016. Plans are required to send out Annual Notice of Change letters to current enrollees to notify them of the plan changes for the upcoming year. These notices should have been received by October 1.

Fewer than 10% of all seniors choose the Part D plan that was best for them. Name recognition alone is not a good way to choose a plan. Rather, plan choice should be based on a combination of factors — coverage of all medications, plan premiums, deductibles, preferred pharmacy, medication copays, and expected annual out-ofpocket costs.

Go to Medicare.gov between October 15 and December 7 to look at the plans available in 2016. At this website, you can enter your zip code, medications, and preferred pharmacy to find the best plan for you.

Voter ID Registration Do you need a ride to the local DMV in order to obtain an ID for voter registration? Please call the Senior Center for more information.

Vitamin A

There are two types of vitamin A. Preformed vitamin A, also called retinol, is found in animal products. Good sources are fortified milk, eggs, meat, cheese, liver, halibut fish oil, cream and kidneys. Pro-vitamin A is found in plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

The most common type of pro-vitamin A is beta-carotene, a carotenoid that produces dark pigments in plant foods. Beta-carotene can be found in these brightly colored foods:  Cantaloupe  Pink grapefruit  Apricots  Carrots  Pumpkin  Sweet potatoes  Winter squash  Dark green, leafy vegetables  Broccoli Functions of vitamin A include the formation and maintenance of teeth, bones, soft tissue, white blood cells, the immune system and mucus membranes. Beta-carotene also acts as an antioxidant.

Vitamin A also helps skin grow and repair skin. It works by signaling to the cells to grow at a faster rate, bringing fresher, more youthful skin to the surface more rapidly.

Recipe of the Month:

Pumpkin Grilled Cheese Sandwich from www.thedailymeal.com Butter, softened 8 slices whole grain bread 4 slices mozzarella cheese 4 slices cheddar cheese 8 ounces pumpkin puree Make grilled cheese sandwiches by buttering one side of each piece of bread and placing both cheese slices on the non-buttered side of the bread. Spread 2 to 3 tablespoons of pumpkin puree on the remaining slices of bread and then place them on top of the cheese, buttered side out to make a sandwich.

Cook in a skillet over medium heat until both sides are very crisp and the cheese is melted.

Remove from heat and let rest for 2 minutes.

Serve with tomato soup.

Makes 4 sandwiches.

Nutrition Program Information: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Cancellations and reservations must be made by 1:00 PM on the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the County/Senior Center.

News: COA Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for October 6, 2015 Meetings are Open to the Public

Center News: Cindy McGlynn  Carol Heidenway is officially moving; thanks for your service, we wish you the best in IL.  Former Mayor Bob Barnett has been appointed our newest COA member.  We are $8,000 short our fundraising goal.

In-Service: Stoughton Homelessness Coalition Kelly Janda presented its goals of promoting awareness & better coordination of services to prevent poverty and homelessness. She also shared the group’s current projects/strategies.

Strategic Plan  Discussed format plans for focus groups.  Critical thinkers / those who will give honest feedback are welcomed to participate.

COA Bylaws  Revisions complete; motioned and adopted.  The draft sent for approval by City Council.

Legislative Update: Carol Heidenway  Many thanks to Carol Heidenway for her years of volunteer advocacy and education of public policies and their effects on seniors. You will be greatly missed here!  Voter ID laws are up for debate; contact your local officials with your personal stories.  Wireless service is unreliable or nonexistent in 11 counties & cannot be used to report some medical conditions. WI backs a bill to mandate residents maintain landline access.  Sen. Baldwin seeks support for the Family Caregiver Act to recognize/support caregivers through a national advisory council.  Family Care re-design draft expected April 1.

Would you like to see your budget stretch further? FoodShare Wisconsin may be able to help. This is a food assistance program for anyone with low or no income. This includes working people or those receiving Social Security, SSI, SSDI or Unemployment. You could receive monthly deposits on the QUEST card to help with your food purchases. If your monthly income is less than the amount shown for your household size, you could be eligible.
