axãáM Case Management Services Medicare Part D Open Enrollment November 15 to December 31, 2010, Medicare Part D open enrollment time, is fast approaching and, as with every year since the start of Medicare Part D, we at the Stoughton Senior Center are here to help. We are, more or less, ready as we’ll ever be! Open enrollment is a period in which individuals enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription drug program can make changes and enroll in a different plan as desired.

Enrollees are also welcome to make no changes at all if the current plan indicates continued sufficiency. For many people there are adverse changes with their current Part D plan that may require them to change their enrollment. Several existing plans, such as Dean Care RX and First Health Part D will no longer offer their plan for 2011. Enrollees in these programs must make a change in order to stay covered by Medicare Part D. Regardless of your situation, the Senior Center is offering assistance to people who need help with their Medicare Part D insurance. We are also holding two Medicare Part D informational talks at the Senior Center open to the general public.

The dates are: Friday, November 12, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Monday, November 15, 5:30-7:30 PM During these sessions we will walk through the Medicare Part D plan finder offered by the Medicare.Gov website and teach attendees how to search for the best Medicare Prescription Drug plan for them based on their prescriptions.

If computer work is not a familiar skill, people are encouraged to bring a friend or relative who may be computer savvy and able to learn the details of website. After the event, if the individual assistance of a volunteer or case manager is still desired, the opportunity to schedule an appointment will be offered.

As with every year, the case managers will be holding office hours for people needing assistance in working with the Part D system. We will also have the assistance of three trained volunteers who will also hold open office hours.

Please know that you must bring your Medicare card and a current and accurate list of your medication for your scheduled appointment.

We will help you navigate the Medicare Plan Finder and you can make the decisions that you feel are best for you. Call us with any questions you may have and consider stopping in to one of the two scheduled informational times. We look forward to seeing you soon!

New Health Care Law Timeline: Changes for 2011 In 2010 the new health care law began several initiatives designed to help Americans of all ages with health care, including those receiving Medicare. Those changes included the $250 one-time rebate for Medicare Part D recipients reaching the “doughnut hole”. In 2011 expect a new set of health care changes, including: • Those who reach the Medicare doughnut hole (or coverage gap), will receive a 50 percent discount on brand-name prescription drugs.

• Medicare benefits will expand to include free coverage for wellness and preventive care.

• It will become easier to file complaints about the quality of care in a nursing home. Better access to information on nursing home quality and resident rights will be available.

• Workers will start participating in a voluntary national insurance program to help pay for future long-term care services and supports.

By 2020, Medicare Part D coverage gap is projected to be completely closed. Check www.aarp.org/getthefacts for the latest information.

Dane County Disaster Assistance Voluntary Registry

HospiceCare Seminars and Support Groups

The Dane County Disaster Assistance Voluntary Registry has been developed in an effort to identify individuals who cannot safely evacuate their homes in the event of a disaster. Registration does not guarantee any particular emergency services during a disaster. It will, however, enhance the ability of emergency management and local officials to meet the emergency needs of the community. The information acquired is kept strictly confidential in a secure database maintained by Dane County Emergency Management. You may want to apply to be on the Disaster Assistance Voluntary Registry if you and someone you care for would: • Be considered homebound and without family, caregivers or friends nearby to help in an emergency; • Need outside help to safely leave home during a disaster; • Be in jeopardy if there was a need to stay home for longer than three days without assistance; • Need special notification about the need for evacuation due to impairment.

HospiceCare Inc. will hold five grief support groups for those grieving the death of a loved one. HospiceCare will also offer a Holiday Remembrance Program and an informational seminar for caregivers. All groups are open to the public and free of charge. All groups require pre-registration and are held at the Don & Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, unless otherwise noted. To register, call HospiceCare at (608) 276-4660 and ask to speak with a grief counselor.

• Journey Through Grief will be held Mondays, November 1 – December 13, from 3:00 p.m.

– 5:00 p.m. This group is held at Waunakee Senior Center, 333 S. Madison St. in Waunakee.

• “Caring for Someone With Alzheimers’ Disease or Dementia” Tues. Nov. 9 , 6:30 pm to 8:00 p.m.

• “Choosing the Gift of HospiceCare” will be held Monday, Nov. 15, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

• After the Caregiving Ends will be held Wednesdays, November 17 – December 8, from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

• Bridges Weekly Support Group is held every Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Pre-registration is not required.

• Holiday Remembrance Program will be held Sunday, November 21, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5701 Raymond Road in Madison.

• Caregiving Through the Holidays: Ten Ways to Reduce Stress will be held Tuesday, November 16, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. This seminar is for those caring for someone with a progressive or terminal illness.

People with supportive and capable family and/ or caregivers available to help during an emergency are encouraged to develop a disaster plan or review disaster plans already in place for the consumer in lieu of signing up for the registry. Information on disaster planning or information related to the Dane County Disaster Assistance Voluntary Registry can be found online at www.countyofdane.com/emergency or by calling Dane County Emergency Management at 608-266-4330. KITCHEN CORNER: Are All Fats the Same?

Simply put: no. Fat is a major source of energy for the body and aids in the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K, and carotenoids. Both animal and plant-derived food products contain fat, and when eaten in moderation, fat is important for proper growth, development, and maintenance of good health. As a food ingredient, fat provides taste, consistency, and stability and helps us feel full.

Saturated and trans fats raise LDL (or "bad") cholesterol levels in the blood, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease. Dietary cholesterol also contributes to heart disease. Unsaturated fats, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, do not raise LDL cholesterol and are beneficial when consumed in moderation. Therefore, it is advisable to choose foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol as part of a healthful diet.

Unlike other fats, the majority of trans fat is formed when liquid oils are made into solid fats like shortening and hard margarine. However, a small amount of trans fat is found naturally, primarily in some animal-based foods. Essentially, trans fat is made when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil -- a process called hydrogenation.

Hydrogenation increases the shelf life and flavor stability of foods containing these fats.

Where will I find trans fat?

Vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, cookies, snack foods, and other foods made with or fried in partially hydrogenated oils.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: WINTER SQUASH PECAN BREAD 1 1/2 c. cooked, mashed acorn winter squash (Hubbard, butternut or other yellow fleshed winter squash.)

2/3 c. butter 1 2/3 c. sugar 4 eggs 2/3 c. milk 3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. each ground coriander, ground cloves, ground cinnamon 1 1/2 c. chopped pecans Puree cooked squash in blender or food processor or press through sieve. Cream butter and sugar until blended. Beat in eggs until fluffy. Add squash and milk. Stir until blended. Mix flour, baking powder, soda, salt, coriander, cloves and cinnamon. Add to the squash mixture and stir until blended. Stir in pecans Pour into 2 greased 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes or until a wooden skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on wire racks All Meals provided by:

As a part of the LGBT Senior Resource Information Project (funded by the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County) a Dementia presentation will be held on Wed. Dec. 15 , 2:00 to 4:00pm. The presentation will be at OutReach, Inc., Ste 1, 600 Williamson Street, Madison. Danielle Thai, Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, will use a power point entitled “We All Forget: Is It Normal Aging or Should I Be Concerned?” to tell us how memories work, what's normal and what's not for our brains as we age, what should we do if we're concerned about ourselves or others? These questions and more will be answered. We will also be told about the many resources available for support.

axãáM Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for October 5, 2010 Budget: • The Mayor has proposed a 2.82% increase in next year’s budget; which is below the allowable 3% increase within the levy limit.

• Some City Council members have concerns with reducing the operations budget without looking at personnel; some members would like to see the budget with no increase.

Facility: • We have a social work graduate student intern. Natalie Raemisch will assist every afternoon with case management services through May. • Medicare Part D open enrollment begins Nov. 15. See page 2 for details.

Strategic Plan: • Bill Rizzo from Dane County UWExtension Office presented 5-year plan to COA members.

• The next step is for staff to prioritize and assign tasks to the COA Committees.

CHANGING LIVES ONE LITTLE DRESS AT A TIME……..

Do you sew? Have any extra fabric collecting dust? Little Dresses for Africa is a nonprofit, Christian based organization which provides relief to the children of Africa. Simple dresses are made and distributed through orphanages in Central Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy.

Knowing the history of the girls in Africa and the difficult road that lay ahead, a small group of ladies returning from a short term mission trip to Malawi began to sew simple little dresses.

These dresses are easy to make and take little fabric. They can even be made out of a pillowcase. The pattern is available at the Senior Center. Jeanne Schwass-Long has left a couple of examples at the center for you to look at. Ruby Cabibbo will pick up completed dresses and pay for shipping them. Ruby also has some donated fabric if you would like to sew, but don’t have fabric. Contact her at 873-5525. TAI CHI CLASSES This class will help you strengthen your

balance, reduce stress, and promote physical and emotional health. Monday and Thursday beginner classes at 9:00 am. Advanced classes on Monday and Thursdays at 1:00 pm. Call the center for exact location of class . Cost $5.00 per class.

Computer and Email Lessons

Learn to use a computer or to set up email with a computer specialist on Tuesdays 9:00 am to 11:00 am. No registration required. If you have computer questions you may also call 873-8585 on Tuesdays and talk to our computer specialists.

YOGA CLASS

Classes are held at the fire station located at 401 East Main Street in Stoughton on Tuesdays and Fridays 9:00-10:00 am. Anyone over 50 is welcome to attend. A suggested donation of $2 to $10 is appreciated, paid to the instructor Jill.

POOL PLAY ON TUESDAY EVENINGS

Music Appreciation classes presented by John Beutel will resume Monday nights.

The series is at 7:00 pm on Monday, November 1st , 8th , and 15th at the Senior Center. Anyone who loves music and wishes to learn more is invited to attend. The classes are free, but donations are welcome.
