Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

axãáM Case Management Services Customer Credit Program:

As a customer of Stoughton Utilities, you may be eligible for our Customer Credit Program.

This is a Commitment to Community program that was established to help members of our community with limited financial resources cover their energy costs.

To qualify for our program you must verify through the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) that your gross household income from the past three months falls below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

To apply for energy assistance, please contact Energy Services Inc. at (608) 2678601 to schedule an appointment. You may apply anytime from October 1, 2010 through May 15, 2011.

Representatives from Energy Services Inc. will take applications at the Stoughton Senior Center, 248 West Main Street, on Wednesdays from 9:00AM to noon and 1:00 PM to 4:00PM on the dates listed below. You must call (608) 267-8601 to make an appointment for these dates at the Senior Center location.

Case Managers are often called to meet with clients away from the office and are not always instantly accessible as you may wish. They will return all phone calls and will schedule appointments.

6 Exercise Tips for Cold Weather When temperatures drop, it’s tempting to curl up on the couch till spring. Don’t. Instead, follow these tips from Michael Wollpert, triathlete and fitness instructor at Equinox in Chicago, and you may even enjoy exercising outdoors this winter.

Layer it on. “Wear a base layer of wool or synthetic fabric to wick moisture. Then add a fleece for warmth and a shell to protect against the elements.”

But don’t overdress. “Overheating can cause you to sweat too much and actually make you colder. Your fleece or shell should have zippers to vent out hot air.”

Cover bare skin. “Protect all exposed skin whenever the temperature is below freezing.”

Take time to warm up. “Pulled muscles are common in cold weather. Do a light warm-up, and then stretch before moving on. Never stretch cold muscles.”

If you are approved for energy assistance through WHEAP, you will automatically be approved for Stoughton Utilities’ Customer Credit Program without having to complete any additional paperwork. (This information was taken from the City of Stoughton Tower Times Issue 3, Winter 2010.)

Take a break. “Plan out spots where you can stop and get a break from the cold.”

axãáM Case Management Services Tips For Making Meals Easier • Use Lighter Weight Dishes Substitute plastic or break resistant ceramic

dinnerware for heavier pottery or stoneware.

Purchase glasses with bumps or ridges that make them easier to grasp.

• Store Dishes, Utensils, and Food in

Locations Closest to Where you Use Them Keep frequently used items on countertop.

Avoid stacking or piling objects on top of each other.

Place commonly used items on a turn table or Lazy Susan—in cupboards & on the table.

• Simplify Meal Preparation Buy packaged salads or baby lettuces & cut

up vegetables.

Use canned /frozen vegetables for soup and casseroles.

Utilize prepared foods- keep a few frozen or hermetically sealed meals and food items around for a quick & easy meal in minutes.

Purchase sliced meats/cheese or have deli/ butcher slice your purchases for you.

• Use Labor and Energy Saving

Techniques and Devices Use an electric can opener, jar opener, food processor, etc. to make meal preparation faster and easier.

Look for a cutting board with a raised side or use steel prongs to help keep food in place.

Use a curved-blade chopping knife and cutting bowl.

Use a dust pan or a large flat scoop to transfer chopped items for cooking.

Dealing With Cold Weather

If you use a cane or walker in the winter and have difficulty gripping the handle while wearing mittens or gloves, make a non-slip cover for the handles. For extra gripping power, try knitting or crocheting a small sleeve to fit snugly over the handle or attach a strip of self-sticking moleskin (available at drugstores) or Velcro (the soft side) to the cane handle. This technique may also work on some crutches. It definitely will make the handle feel warmer in cold weather!

Our case managers help individuals and families with a variety of services including home services, food programs, loan closet, mental health services, Medicare and Medicare D questions, housing and financial assistance. If you or some one you care about has received help from our case managers please consider making a donation to the Senior Center on behalf of the case mangers. January is National Hot Tea Month

Tea ranks as high or higher than many fruits and vegetables in the ORAC score, a score that measures antioxidant potential of plant-based foods.

Tea is the world’s most popular beverage after water. It has been cultivated in China since prehistoric times, where it is still grown in family plots. It was probably first used as a vegetable relish (as it was in American colonies and still is in some parts of Asia) and as a medicine. By the 8th century, cultivation had begun on a commercial scale, and shortly thereafter, tea cultivation began in Japan. Tea was first imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company in the early 17th century and became an instant hit. Its popularity played an important role in the opening of Asia to Western commerce.

All tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, a warm-weather evergreen. Whether tea is black, oolong, green or white depends on how the fresh leaves of the tea plant are processed after they are plucked, and their level of contact with oxygen. During oxidation, the tea leaves undergo natural chemical reactions that result in distinctive color and taste characteristics. Black tea is allowed to oxidize for two to four hours. Green tea is not oxidized at all—the leaves are steamed, rolled and dried. Oolong tea falls somewhere between green and black teas, in that the leaves are only partially oxidized. White tea is not oxidized at all, and in fact, is plucked in the spring before the leaf buds even unfurl.

NUTRITION PROGRAMS

All meals are provided by Dane County Consolidated Food Services; and packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton School District every weekday.

Herbal teas do not come from the tea plant Camellia sinensis, but are an infusion of various leaves, roots, bark, seeds or flowers of other plants. While they lack the caffeine of tea, they also are not associated with any of the potential health benefits of traditional teas.

Recipe of the Month Almond Tea

Not just almond, but lemon and vanilla too.

It's a very mellow tasting tea recipe, so you should be prepared to relax while drinking it. You will need: 4 tea bags of your choosing 1/2 tsp lemon zest 1/2 cup sugar 2 tbs lemon juice 1 tsp almond extract 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 4 cups water Preparation: Steep the tea and lemon zest together in boiling water for 4 minutes. Stir in the sugar, lemon juice, almond and vanilla flavorings. Serve hot.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. The suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal; Meal Site: $6.00, Delivered Meal: $6.25.

Orders/Cancellations: Participants must make reservations or cancellations by 1:00 PM the day before a requested meal. Any cancellations made on the day of a previously scheduled meal are still subject to payment to the caterer.

She will also be an online partner for you so you can add offers and look for services needed. Teach Knitting to Children The Stoughton Public Library is looking for volunteers to help teach kids how to knit.

Are you a safe driver, willing to use your own vehicle and can spare a few hours per week to provide an essential service to Stoughton area older adults? If so, please consider volunteering for one or both of the following Dane County RSVP Programs: RSVP Drivers provide transportation to adults 60 years of age & older who are in need of rides to medical appointments in Madison.

Home Delivered Meal Drivers pick up and deliver meals to older adults who are unable to prepare their own meals.

Drivers for both programs are reimbursed .485 cents per mile, and covered with personal accident, liability and excess automobile liability insurance. The programs are flexible and can work around individual schedules. More drivers are needed to meet the demand for service. Meeting Highlights for December 7, 2010 Newsletter: • A representative from Liturgical Press came fore a week to sell next year’s newsletter ads.

• Last year’s sales covered the cost of printing the newsletter and we will even receive a percentage back. We greatly appreciate everyone who supports our newsletter Medicare Part D: • Since November 15 (first day of enrollment) our case managers, intern and trained volunteers have assisted 108 people with navigating the Medicare.gov website to enroll for a new Rx plan. Open enrollment continues until Dec. 31.

RSVP of Dane County: • All volunteers of the Senior Center have the option to additionally register with RSVP. • The hours devoted to the Center are reported to RSVP; volunteers are eligible for supplemental and liability insurance and fun recognitions Strategic Plan: • Once COA sub-committees have been firmed, actions will be assigned to each committee (i.e.

Finance, Program & Evaluation, Public Relations, Volunteer).

• All COA members are encouraged to re-access their committee standings. Please contact Jeanne Schwass-Long with your committee (s) assignment preference ASAP. Community members are needed!
