Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you're going to retire, assessing the right time involves some homework. Here are some considerations to help with the decision making. For the complete article, go to the website listed above.

1. Calculate available retirement income and assess adequacy Determine how much income you'll get in retirement from all available sources (pensions, Social Security, retirement accounts, work, etc.). If this doesn't give you your desired lifestyle, given whatever withdrawal strategy you plan to use, consider not retiring.

Not retiring when you don't have enough income to support your desired lifestyle isn't necessarily a bad thing. In addition, not retiring serves four primary functions: It preserves your assets; it gives you a chance to keep building your nest egg; it shortens the period of time you'll be drawing down your assets; and it increases the monthly income you'll get from Social Security, provided you delay claiming it.

2. Consider life expectancy, expenditures and risks Consider all the risks that you might face in retirement and how you'll mitigate those risks.

These may include outliving your assets, inflation or sequence of return risk. If you haven't addressed those risks, you might consider not retiring until you do.

3. How does your retirement plan function?

How sound is your plan? Is there a 90% chance that it will work or just a 50% chance?

If nothing else, you want to get a sense of the trade-offs and choices you have to make to ensure your plan is as sound as possible.

4. Evaluate the impact of your debt If you have a lot of debt as you head into retirement—especially mortgage debt, it could affect your ability to increase the amount of money you save for retirement. Also, you shouldn't retire if you don't have sufficient income to service your debt, especially if you have a home equity loan that converts from interest-only payments to principal-and-interest payments while you're in retirement.

5. Determine the availability of health insurance It might seem obvious, but if you don't have health insurance coverage, consider delaying retirement until you've earmarked either assets or income for out-of-pocket health care expenses in retirement. As various studies have shown, the net present value of health care costs ranges anywhere from $250,000 to $900,000 for a 65-year-old couple retiring today. Of course, before making your decision to retire or not, you should consider all sources of health insurance, including employersponsored retiree health insurance, spousal insurance, COBRA coverage, Medicare and Medicaid.

6. Examine the impact of various Social Security claiming-age options There are plenty of Social Security strategies, many of which can increase your monthly benefit and overall benefit. One bit of advice as you contemplate when to retire and when to

News: Case Management Services take Social Security: Distinguish between the Social Security claiming age and the optimal retirement age. The two are not inextricably linked. In other words, choosing the ideal age at which to claim Social Security is a different and separate decision from when to retire. So be sure to examine not just the best age to retire but also the best age (or ages, if you're married) to claim Social Security.

7. Assess the type of retirement plan and the plan's features Some workers have employer-sponsored pension plans with different features and different distribution options, as well as contribution or benefit formulas. Knowing what you have is part of deciding your optimal retirement age.

8. Analyze the financial status of investments If you retire before or during a down market, you stand a good chance of running out of money. In some circles they call this the “sequence of return” risk. For some, it means reducing the percentage of money you might put in risky assets and delaying retirement. For instance, retirees need fewer stocks and more annuities.

For those who think the stock market might rise in the five- to 10-year period around retirement, it might be OK to retire.

9. Examine earnings prospects if you remain employed What do you stand to earn if you keep working, versus the joy you would get from being retired and enjoying a life of leisure? That's the trade-off that must be evaluated.

10. Appraise the availability of phased retirement You might be more likely to select a retirement age if you knew you could ease into retirement -4

a phased retirement, so to speak. Retiring isn't always about leaving the workforce and relying on income from a pension or Social Security. Other considerations include early retirement incentives, your health status and whether or not you are care giving a loved one.

The authors of this article urge you to take time to evaluate all of the factors involved in this important decision. We wish you successful planning for a happy retirement!

KITCHEN CORNER Food poisoning sickens millions of consumers per year according to latest government statistics.

Sometimes it's not always easy to tell the difference between food borne illness and influenza, especially since both show similar symptoms.

Influenza, commonly called "the flu," is caused by a virus that infects the respiratory tract. Food borne disease, referred to as food poisoning, is carried or transmitted to humans by food containing harmful substances.

With the flu, most symptoms will be associated with fever, fatigue, chest discomfort, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose. With food poisoning you will most likely have symptoms of headache, backache and stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and fever.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Taken from Rayovac Healthnets Healthy Cookbook

Spinach –Artichoke Casserole 2-10 ounce packages frozen, chopped spinach 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1-14 oz.can artichoke hearts, packed in water 3/4 cup nonfat sour cream 6 Tablespoons Parmesan cheese, divided Pepper to taste 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Cook spinach according to package directions. Drain well, lightly squeezing out excess water.

3. Saute onion in olive oil until onion becomes translucent. Drain artichoke hearts and cut into quarters.

4. Combine all ingredients, reserving 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese to sprinkle over the top.

5. Bake for 30 minutes. Serve hot with garlic toast rounds.

6. Serves 18-20

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals : Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. The minimum suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal. Meal Site: $6.15 Delivered Meal: $6.40.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00pm the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.

Community & Center News PREVIEW: Living Well with Chronic Conditions Workshop Tuesday, January 22, 12:30 pm Stoughton Area Senior Center Come to learn about this upcoming workshop designed for people with different chronic health problems and for their caregivers. The workshop is given 2 ½ hours, once a week for 6 weeks and will be facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are trained professionals with a chronic condition themselves.

Accreditation Process In August, we began our second process for National Council on Aging re-accreditation. Going through this process not only ensures we maintain this official recognition; it also forces us to be critical of our service to the community –Are we the best we can be?

Currently, the Accreditation Committee, comprised of staff, volunteers & community leaders has reviewed five of the nine standards. Completion of each standard means the Committee feels the Center fulfills the NCOA’s required criteria.

Throughout the process, unmet requirements or recommendations are scripted as Action Plans for further work. So far, we’ve sited the following needs: «Review our mission statement.

«Conduct an orientation to all COA members.

«Report funding & participation trend data in reports.

«Review our confidentiality policy.

«Continue refining our Policies & Procedures Manual «Develop an evaluation plan.

«Compile results of all evaluations and give observations and recommendations.

The Committee is scheduled to finish reviewing the remaining standards by March. However, our work does not end there. Meeting all nine standards of excellence fore senior center operations is ongoing.

Walking The Halls Are you looking for an opportunity to get out of the house and get some exercise during the colder weather? If so, consider walking the halls of River Bluff School. At no charge, River Bluff will be open to the public from Nov. 12 to March 15th Monday -Friday, 5:00 - 7:00 pm. It will be closed on 11/22, 11/23, 12/26, 1/2. Beginner Tai Chi Classes to Start in January Here’s your chance to stick to your New Year’s resolutions to become more active and get some exercise. Discover the strength and vitality this Chinese health exercise can give to you! It will begin on Monday, January 7th at 10:30 AM. This class is for beginners. It features a Tai Chi exercise routine of three steps and eight moves. The cost is $27.00 for 6 classes or $5.00 for each class. Participants from previous classes have reported increases in strength and flexibility as well as better balance.
