Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their own homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

Equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and other items may be checked out on a short-term basis to those residing in our case management service area (Stoughton, Town of Albion and Town of Dunkirk). Call or stop in for details.

News: Case Management Services Information Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) MISSION: To ensure that the variety of life’s choices and equal opportunities are available to all deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing people.

ODHH promotes “Equal Communication Access” and Accommodations. What is Equal Communication Access? Required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Equal Communication Access is communication made possible by auxiliary aids and services so that persons who are deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing can participate in and benefit from services, programs and other opportunities.

WHAT CAN ODHH DO FOR YOU? The Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides:  Information and referral about the following (including but not limited to): available services, available technologies for accessibility, community services, working with people who are deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind and laws relating to the rights of people with hearing loss.  Training and consultation: ODHH staff provides free in-service trainings, presentations and consultations. No Time Like the New Year to Complete Important Documents The start of the new year would be the perfect time to consider the following: Do You Have a Durable Power of Attorney?

This designates who will take care of your affairs if you are unable to decide for yourself in the case of mental or physical incapacitation. You can designate one person to handle health decisions and another for financial decisions or you can designate one person for both roles.

What Are Your End-of-Life Wishes? A living will, also known as an advance health care directive, is used to indicate choices about end-of -life care. Make sure your health care agent is aware of your decisions.

Do You Have a Will or Living Trust? These are the legal methods used to designate what happens to your possessions and money after you pass. A will simply specifies, in writing, who gets what and how much. A living trust is an alternative to a will. A senior who prefers a trust puts their assets in the trust and names a person to take charge in case of death or if they become incapacitated.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Food and Safety Checklist

Taken from “Old Timey Recipes” circa 1995 Recipe by Mrs. Robert Rounion

Have a week’s worth of food and safety supplies.

If you live far from other people, have more supplies on hand. Make sure you have the following supplies:  Drinking water  Canned/no-cook food (bread, crackers, dried fruits)  Non-electric can opener  Food for your pets  Prescription drugs and other medicine  First-aid kit  Rock-salt to melt ice on walkways  Supply of cat litter or bag of sand to add traction on walkways  Flashlight and extra batteries  Battery-powered lamps or lanterns (To prevent the risk of fire, avoid using candles.)  Powered milk Information from:

Maple Apples 5 medium sweet potatoes 5 medium tart apples 1 cup pure maple syrup ¼ cup butter Buttered crumbs Boil sweet potatoes in their jackets in salted water. While potatoes are boiling, pare and slice apples and place in syrup. Add butter and a pinch of salt, cook until apples are tender. Peel potatoes and slice in halves, place in buttered baking dish. Spoon over half the apple/syrup mixture. Repeat layers.

Top generously with buttered crumbs. Bake at 400 degrees to heat through.

Nutrition Program Information: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch Mon. thru Fri. at 12:00 PM. Menu pg.15.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Cancellations and reservations must be made by 1:00 PM on the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the County/Senior Center.

News: COA Community Commission on Aging

Center News: Cindy McGlynn  Welcomed Roz Gausman and Bob Barnett as new COA members. Kay Davis is resigning from COA due to her inability to attend for 4 consecutive meetings/year. Kay has kindly offered to continue to serve on COA ad hoc meetings as needed. Kay, thanks for your many years of support to the Senior Center, and we look forward to your continued assistance in other capacities.  Announced Teressa Pellett’s resignation as Program/Volunteer Coordinator. SC staff and participants will greatly miss her, but wish Teressa well in her new position.  Getting bids to replace the river rock.  Discussed Nutrition Site Program Pilot grant to offer additional meal options. See Pg. 12 In-Service: Stoughton Senior Housing Jean Truss presented on the housing options in town, and discussed the challenge older adults have with finding affordable housing.

Strategic Plan  Reviewed 2010’s strategic issues.  An Ad Hoc meeting will work on specific questions for focus groups. COA members will give suggestions for people to invite.  Critical thinkers / those who will give honest feedback are welcomed to participate.

 Girl Scout Troop #2301 for the thoughtful cards for the Meals on Wheels clients.  The Thanksgiving Day Meal Delivery Drivers, Stoughton Hospital, McGlynn Pharmacy and On Track Communications.  The many volunteers from the Key Club, Boy Scout Troop 167, Universal AET, and Triangle Troopers 4-H who provided hours of yard work help to seniors.  All our wonderful volunteers for their support and service to our Center this past year.

Christmas Dinner on December 25th Hosted by the VFW Post 328, American Legion and Auxiliaries and a host of awesome volunteers.

We often caregivers say they are looking for support from people who "really understand because they've been there, too." A Dementia Caregiver Support Group offers just that – a safe place for caregivers of loved ones with dementia to meet and develop a mutual support system.

CenterEvents: Educational/Health Learn to Felt Wednesday, December 2 1:00 PM Join Felting Artist Peter McMasters, of Spry Whimsy, to learn about this beautiful and practical art. During the class you will be introduced to basic wet felting techniques that will carry over to future felting projects. You will see how you can make more flowers or fabric at home with very few tools and just a little fiber.

Be an Artist for Day Wednesday, December 9, 1:00 PM Let’s gather and explore your creative side.

Come create a beautiful and unique piece of art with the help of artist/instructor Sara Lenz.

We will work with acrylic paint on a 16 x 20 canvas. Sara will provide easy step-by-step instructions and by the end of the class you will have completed your own rendition of the masterpiece below to take home. Sandwich with Soup or Salad: A New Meal Site Option on Tuesdays As part of a statewide revitalization effort directed toward the congregate nutrition program, the Bureau of Aging and Disability Resources(BADR) released a Request for Applications to aging units/ADRCs to fund pilot projects throughout the state. The Stoughton Area Senior Center applied and received one of the eight Revitalization Innovation Mini-Grants to pilot additional meal options at the Center. Similar to the Thursday salad option, on Tuesdays anyone over the age of 60 will have the choice to order from the regular congregate site menu or a sandwich with soup or salad option from Main Street Kitchen.

Unlike the $5 meal deal offered by Main Street Kitchen in the summer, this option may be paid by donation based on a client’s determined ability to pay. This six-month trial will be an option ever Tuesday beginning January 5, and if successful, may be continually covered Dane County.

Many thanks to the BADR and Area Agency on Aging of Dane County for this funding opportunity and to Kim at Main Street Kitchen for providing a great line-up of meal options in the months ahead. Here are January’s meal options.
