Mission Statement We are dedicated to the enrichment of the lives of older adults and their families by providing diverse programs, social services and volunteer opportunities.

The Stoughton High School Madrigal singers and musicians present their annual dinner show for the Stoughton Area Senior Center on Tuesday December 7 at Noon. Please make reservations by noon Dec. 6. Cost for the dinner and show is $8.00. Come and enjoy some holiday cheer! Wassail!!

St Ann’s second grade will be here on Dec. 6 at 9:45 AM to help decorate our tree and to do a craft. They will also be bringing holiday treats to share with us.

Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

Gay & Gray Discussion Group

Senior adults from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community meet on Thursdays from 2:30-4:00pm at the Madison Senior Center, 330 W. Mifflin St. These are friendly conversations that are informal, open dialogues. LGBT persons, their friends and families are welcome. Participants determine the topics based on current interests; a facilitator attends each meeting. For December, the dates are the 2nd & the 16th. If you need more information, please call the Madison Senior Center at 266-6581.

Volunteer Opportunity – Become an Elder Friend

The Stoughton Area Senior Center needs caring and compassionate volunteers to work with older adults who are having difficulty coping with life changes. Some may be feeling lonely, depressed or forgetful as they age. Others may be having difficulty dealing with the loss of a spouse, family member or friend.

Elder Friends receive training in listening and communication skills, the aging process and resources for older adults. Elder Friends can help by reaching out to persons in need and enriching these person’s lives with sensitivity and practical assistance. If you are interested in hearing more about becoming an Elder Friend, please contact one of the Case Managers at the Stoughton Area Senior Center.

Alzheimer’s and the Holidays: Making it Comfortable for Everyone

When the holidays arrive, you strive to make things wonderful and special for your whole family. However, if you have a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, he or she may feel disoriented and scared if the regular routine is disrupted by holiday parties, loud music and different decorations throughout the house. It’s important to find ways for the whole family to enjoy the holiday season.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s is a brain disease. It destroys brain cells, leading to memory loss and changes in behavior that can affect all areas of your life including your social life, work and the hobbies you once enjoyed. It is a progressive disease, and there is no cure. However, there are medications on the market that can help temporarily delay the more severe symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and there are strategies and medications that can help with the emotional difficulties associated with this disease.

The prevention of Alzheimer’s disease is currently in its infancy. Factors like age, genetics, lifestyle and environment play a role. However, experts agree that exercise, diet and an active social life may lower your chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise may benefit brain cells by increasing oxygen and blood flow through the brain. A heart-healthy diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish and shellfish, nuts and olive oil and very little red meat may also help to protect the brain. Continued on p. 4

Tips for the holidays

While advice about the best way to help someone with Alzheimer’s disease often depends on the stage of the disease, there are some general guidelines. To make your loved one feel comfortable during the holiday season, keep things simple. Not only will you enjoy yourself more but your loved one will appreciate it. Keep your holiday decorations toned down.

Avoid blinking lights, candles and other decorations that might resemble food, which could be hazardous to a person with Alzheimer’s. Do your baking together. Have your loved one measure out ingredients, stir the batter, roll out the dough or do whatever they are capable of doing. The time spent doing something together should be pleasurable and relaxing for both of you. Wrap presents together. Perhaps they can help with wrapping or may only be able to help with the bows.

Read the holiday cards that you receive together and talk about events to include in your holiday letter/greeting card. Watch a favorite holiday movie together.

Keep your gatherings low-key and limit the number of people. Keep in mind soft music and conversation. A lot of stimulation can be upsetting to a person with Alzheimer’s. A calm situation is best. Ask someone familiar to the individual with Alzheimer’s to stay near them and shield them from stressors that may occur during a holiday gathering. This also gives the primary caregiver a nice break and they can concentrate on the guests.

If your loved one resides in a care facility, taking them away from their surroundings can cause anxiety. It’s better to bring the small celebration to them. Visit your loved one during the best time of day for them. Typically Alzheimer’s patients are best in the mornings and at lunch time.

As the day progresses, they become more tired and may be less responsive or become agitated. In addition, limit the number of people visiting to two or three people at a time. A small group of familiar faces may be enjoyable, while a large group of people may cause anxiety.

Appropriate gift giving

It’s important to give those with Alzheimer’s something that they can use and is not frustrating for them. Choose simple, functional presents like comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing, audiotapes of favorite music or books, videos and photo albums. Such choices will have to be based on the stage of the illness and the person’s cognitive functioning. By making some adjustments in your holiday planning, you can make the holiday season comfortable and enjoyable for everyone and much less stressful for you. Kitchen Corner HEALTH BENEFITS OF PUMPKIN

Pumpkins are full of vital anti-oxidants and vitamins. It has been referred to as a superfood, as it is an excellent source of vitamin A. Pumpkins are also rich in B-complex vitamins like folate, niacin, vitamin B-6, thiamin and pantothenic acid. It is also a rich source of minerals like copper, calcium, potassium and phosphorus. The seeds are a good source of fiber, protein, minerals and many vitamins. Almost all of the parts of the pumpkin plant are edible.

Including the leaves and flowers. To get the maximum nutrients, it is best to steam cook it.

NUTRITION PROGRAMS

All meals are provided by Dane County Consolidated Food Services; and packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton School District every weekday.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

Roasted Pumpkin Soup 2 Tbsp. olive oil 2 tsp. ground cinnamon ¾ cup chopped onion ½ cup chopped carrot ¼ cup chopped celery 2 Tbsp. fresh minced ginger 1 Tbsp. minced garlic 1 can (15 oz.) pumpkin 3 ½ cups low sodium chicken stock Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste In a medium saucepan, heat 2 Tbsp. olive oil over medium-high heat. When hot, add the cinnamon, onions, carrots, celery, ginger and garlic to the pan. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until lightly caramelized, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the canned pumpkin, stirring into the vegetables. Add chicken stock to the pan and bring the stock to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook the soup for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft.

Remove the soup from the heat and process in batches in the food processor. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Garnish with chopped fresh sage and a dollop of low-fat sour cream (if desired).

Makes 5 servings. Per serving: 111calories, 6 g total fat (<1 g saturated fat), 11 g carbohydrate, 3 g protein, 4 g dietary fiber, 437 mg sodium.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. The suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal; Meal Site: $6.00, Delivered Meal: $6.25.

Orders/Cancellations: Participants must make reservations or cancellations by 1:00 PM the day before a requested meal. Any cancellations made on the day of a previously scheduled meal are still subject to payment to the caterer.

Tips to Manage Holiday Stress 1. Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones, realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief.

2. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events.

3. Be realistic. As families change and grow, traditions change as well. Choose a few to hang on to & be open to creating new ones.

4. Set aside differences Accept family members and friends as they are, even if they do no live up to your expectations.

5. Stick to a budget.

Decide how much money you can afford to spend; and stick to your budget.

6. Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends, etc. to prevent last minute trips.

7. Learn to say no.

Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful & overwhelmed.

8. Don’t forget healthy habits. Don’t go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks; & continue to get plenty of sleep & physical activity.

9. Take a breather.

Make some time for yourself!

10. Seek professional help if sad or anxious feelings persist.

Meeting Highlights for November 2, 2010 Budget: • The Mayor’s proposed budget was passed!

• City Council approved for the City to do a comprehensive “Budgeting for Outcomes” study to determine the best plan for future budgeting.

Facility News: • Parking lot construction completed in time for winter weather. Thanks for everyone’s patience with the mess and noise.

• Medicare Part D open enrollment continues through to Dec. 31, 2010. Trained volunteers and Case Managers are available to assist with the Medicare.gov website.

Strategic Plan: • Distributed the action plans, along with the remaining action plans from the accreditation process.

• The action plans were generated to address the following strategic issues: 1. Maintain financial stability 2. Be more effective in outreach efforts 3. Expand our pool of volunteers 4. Attract more diverse younger-older adults 5. Begin and expand collaborative activities • Once COA sub-committees have been firmed, actions will be assigned to each committee (i.e.

Finance, Program & Evaluation, Public Relations, Volunteer).

DANE COUNTY TIMEBANK:

Linda Schmidt has become a coordinator for the Dane County TimeBank. She will be glad to sign you up, so you can use your hours volunteering at the Senior Center for exchanging for services you might need. She will also be an online partner for you so you can add offers and look for services needed. Any questions please contact her on Tuesdays 9-11 when she is at the center for computer support 873-8585.

Home Energy Assistance

You will need to schedule an appointment with Energy Services, Inc. at (608) 267-8601.

They will hold office hours at the Stoughton Senior Center on the following Wednesdays: Dec. 8, Jan. 12, Feb. 2, March 16 & 30, and April 13.

MOVIE DAY

Our next free movie will be Marmaduke. A suburban family moves to a new neighborhood with their large yet lovable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way. Join us at 1:00 pm on Friday Dec. 3 for the movie and stay for a treat after the movie for only $1.00.

TAI CHI CLASSES

This class will help you strengthen your balance, reduce stress, and promote physical and emotional health.

Classes are on Mondays and Thursdays; beginners at 9:00 AM, Advanced at 1:00 pm.
