Want to make a difference in a person’s life? We have two different options for you to consider. We are currently looking for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels, Mon.-Fri. 10:45AM -12PM; on a regular weekly schedule, or on a substitute basis. We are also looking for volunteer drivers to take older adults to medical appointments.

Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

New riders are to call ASAP with qualifying information for approval. Rides based on driver availability; 48-hour advance notice is required.

Stoughton United Ministries Affordable Transportation Program Low-income residents of all ages are eligible for free transportation Monday – Friday to various types of appointments in Madison and its nearby suburbs. Anyone whose income is less than 225% of the federal poverty rate is eligible.

Also, rides to the City and United Methodist Church Food Pantries are available at no cost.

Qualifying individuals are considered based on driver availability. Calls may also be made directly to SUM: 873-3273.

Vets Helping Vets Program Volunteer drivers provide medical, job application and support transportation within Dane County for any veterans, including immediate family members regardless of age.

News: Case Management Information New Medicare Cards Present Opportunity to Scam Seniors Reprinted with permission by the GWAAR Legal Services Team

Federal law required the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to create a new Medicare card design. Unlike the current Medicare cards, these new ones will not include the beneficiary’s Social Security number. Social Security numbers are a vital piece of information that scammers use as part of broader identity theft operations. Removal of Social Security numbers from Medicare cards is a big step in fighting both Medicare-specific fraud and broader financial identity theft.

Instead of Social Security numbers, the new card will have a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier with 11 characters. This should limit any consequences of a senior losing his/her new Medicare card.

Scammers may still use the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier for Medicare-specific fraud related to healthcare and benefit information, however, this is far better than when scammers could use the Medicare card for the potential theft of credit cards, banking services, and other wider-ranging financial identity theft.

The new cards will be sent to Medicare recipients automatically. New Medicare recipients will get the cards first, and some are already starting to receive them.

Even though the new Medicare card will prevent many future scams, scam artists have already tried the following: a) Calling a senior to ask for a credit card number to pay a $25 processing fee for the new card, along with requesting bank information and other personal details for the payment.

b) Selling a senior a “temporary” Medicare card for $5 to $50, in addition to requesting bank information and other personal details for the payment. c) Urging a senior to provide bank account information so that the crook, posing as a federal employee, can "credit" the senior's account for a bogus balance on his/her old card. d) Claiming that a senior must confirm her Social Security number to receive his/her new card.

Because Medicare never contacts anyone by phone, any phone call a senior gets claiming to be from Medicare is a scam. Don't even talk to the person; just hang up the phone without providing any personal or financial information.

In addition, the new Medicare card is just as important as any other primary identification, so seniors should be careful with it. If it's lost or stolen, a senior should report it immediately, just as with any other form of ID.

News: Case Management Information June is National Safety Month; Safety Behind the Wheel Excerpts Familydoctor.org For many older adults, the time may come to consider whether they can continue to drive safely. If you are at that point in your life, you might question whether your health, vision, and reaction times are still good enough to drive. You may feel less confident on the road. You may notice more people are honking at you, or that you are having trouble staying in a lane. Friends or family members might have asked if you can still drive safely. If you are concerned, talk with your doctor. He or she can check your health and find out if you have the skills necessary for safe driving.

Path to improved safety Your doctor will understand your desire to drive and be independent. He or she will do a thorough exam to check your physical and mental capabilities. Conditions that could impact your driving include: · Poor eyesight. For example, if you don’t have good night vision, you shouldn’t drive after dark. Eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration can impair your vision. · Arthritis. Stiff, achy joints affect your flexibility and your ability to react quickly.

Medical conditions, such as vertigo (dizziness), Parkinson’s disease, and seizure disorders, for example. · Concentration. · Hearing. If you have difficulty hearing, you may not notice horns, sirens, or even noises from within your car. · Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Forgetting where you’re going in the middle of a trip can be dangerous.

If your doctor feels your health will get in the way of driving, he or she is required by law to report that information to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Remember, your doctor is concerned about your safety. He or she doesn’t want you to hurt yourself or other people on the road.

If you do not have health problems that would make it risky for you to drive, your doctor may still suggest you improve your driving skills. Physical or occupational therapists may be able to help you remain confident in your driving. Changes to your car, such as hand controls or wide mirrors may make it easier for you to drive. Not listening to the radio while driving may help you hear important sounds. If your reaction times are slowed, your doctor may recommend avoiding high traffic times, highways, and allowing more space between you and the car in front of you.

Things to consider Most older adults want to be independent and have the freedom to be on their own. Giving up driving is a change in lifestyle that you may not want to face. However, remember that your safety is important to your family and to the public. If you get lost, have near-misses with other cars, or have an accident, the results could be fatal. Rather than risk your life or the lives of others, you should use other kinds of transportation.

Friends and family members can give you rides.

Don’t feel uncomfortable asking for rides. For example, you can choose to visit the grocery store with a friend. You can go to a social event with a relative who is also planning to attend. You can use public transportation, such as taxi cabs, city buses, or shuttle services. Some towns and cities have special transportation services for older adults. Many people are angry when their driving is limited or when they’re not allowed to drive at all. This reaction is understandable.

Although you feel angry now, try to imagine how you would feel if you were injured or if you hurt someone else. For your safety and for the safety of others, follow your doctor’s advice. Don’t drive if you’ve been told it isn’t safe.

Noting we need to find more community members willing to serve on Committees. · Recently had interview for the Volunteer/ Program Coordinator position. We hope to extend an offer Friday, and look forward to being back to full staff. · Our new canoe rack is expected to be installed this week, new lighter canoes and kayaks will follow soon after.

Volunteer Handbook: COA reviewed and recommends it be printed in color.

Accreditation: Cindy reviewed the recommendations that have been made by the Accreditation Committees to be included in our 5-year Strategic Plan. The list will be emailed with the next agenda.

Legislative Update: The City is hiring a new Finance Director. The 2019 Budget process should begin in June.

Tax-Free Donations Via Your IRA Donors age 70½ can ask their IRA custodian to transfer up to $100,000 in 2018 and thereafter to qualified not-for-profit organizations like the Stoughton Area Senior Center.

Distributions are made only from a personal Individual Retirement Account or a Roth IRA. The benefit is that the value of these gifts are pre-tax. Their value will not be counted as a part of your adjusted gross income. They do not go into your 1040 “deductions” because hey are pre-tax.

The amount is up to the full value of our mandatory distribution for each year. If your 2018 distribution has not yet been taken, you may designate some of it to be sent to the Senior Center.

A letter of notification should be sent by you to the Senior Center. In that letter ask for a receipt when the donation is received.

If you have an interest in learning more about the Center and would like to assist the staff and COA in reaching its goals, please consider serving on a committee: Public Relations: promotes awareness and understanding of SASC program and services.

Program: plans quality and diverse program opportunities for older adults and their families.

Evaluation: determines SASC’s effectiveness in accomplishing its mission and recommends change to ensure high quality service.

Fund Development: identifies and recommends ways to meet current and future needs.

Volunteer: supports staff in developing policies and procedures to recruit, orient and recognize SASC volunteers.

Kitchen Corner Choosing Healthy Meals As You Get Older Making healthy food choices is a smart thing to do—no matter how old you are! Your body changes through your 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond.

Food provides nutrients you need as you age.

Use these tips for better health at each stage of life: 1. Drink plenty of liquids, with age you may lose some of your sense of thirst. Drink water often!

Low-fat or fat-free milk or 100% juice also helps you stay hydrated 2. Make eating a social event. Meals are more enjoyable when you eat with others. Many senior centers offer noon meals that are shared with others.

3. Vary your vegetables. Include a variety of different colored vegetables to brighten your plate. Most vegetables are a low-calorie source of nutrients. Vegetables are also a good source of fiber.

6. Eat for your teeth and gums .People with dental problems sometimes find it hard to chew fruits, vegetables, or meats. Don’t miss out on needed nutrients! Eating softer foods can help.

Try cooked or canned foods like unsweetened fruit, low-sodium soups, or canned tuna.

7. Keep food safe. A food-related illness can be life threatening for an older person. Throw out food that might not be safe.

Home-Cooked Meals: Served at our Senior Center every Thursday between 11:30AM to 12:30PM. The cost is a suggested donation of $4.00; please pay what you can afford. Please reserve at least one day in advance, 873-8585.

Walk-ins may be accepted.

Senior Center Nutrition Program: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please talk with our staff.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District in Dane County every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu is on the following page.

Nutrition Site: Note the additional salad choice available on Fridays and the site/home cooked meals on Thursdays. See pg. 2 for transportation information.

Cost of the meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $9.73 Delivered Meal: $8.54.

Please remember reservations should be made by1:00 PM the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of are still subject to payment to the Center/County. .
