Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

RSVP Driver Program Donation-based transportation to medical appointments for seniors 60 years or older.

New riders are to call ASAP with qualifying information for approval. Rides based on driver availability; 48-hour advance notice is required.

Stoughton United Ministries Affordable Transportation Program Low-income residents of all ages are eligible for free transportation Monday – Friday to various types of appointments in Madison and its nearby suburbs. Anyone whose income is less than 225% of the federal poverty rate is eligible.

Also, rides to the City and United Methodist Church Food Pantries are available at no cost.

Qualifying individuals are considered based on driver availability. Calls may also be made directly to SUM: 873-3273.

Vets Helping Vets Program Volunteer drivers provide medical, job application and support transportation within Dane County for any veterans, including immediate family members regardless of age.

News: Case Management Information Scams and Other Crimes Submitted by Stoughton Police Department

Scams continue to plague unsuspicious citizens on an increasing basis. We could list several hundred different types of scams that innocent victim’s fall to each year. Often, these scams are becoming more and more sophisticated as criminals become increasingly more tech savvy, and so are the scams that they run.

¨

The next scam is that you have won an amount of money and that they need your bank information to direct deposit the money.

Or, another variation is that you need to send them the taxes and fees before the funds can be released. Both of these are fairly common scams that people fall prey to each year.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

¨

Lastly, your bank or financial institution will not call you to conduct an “under cover audit” of the bank. A very common scam is a caller who identifies themselves as a bank investigator investigating a fraud at your bank and they need your help. The person then tries to get the victim to go to the bank and withdraw monies to test the bank employee.

The person then takes the money stating you will get it back when the investigations are completed.

Here are some of the recent examples of scams that people have fallen victim to in our local area: A person calls, identifying themselves as a law enforcement officer (usually from a jail), and states that a relative has been arrested and needs bail money immediately. Often this scam is done to an elderly target and the scammer uses the real name of a grandchild that they likely obtained from another source.

The scam follows that the person needs bail money to be released from jail. People need to understand that law enforcement agencies do not call and request anyone post bail for someone in jail. When in doubt, call the law enforcement agency directly and do not use the number provided by the scammer. Or call your local police department for assistance. It is not uncommon for these criminals to use false caller ID that may look real on your phone.

Next is a call from someone falsely representing themselves as a local Utility Company and stating that they have not received your payment and are going to shut your services off immediately if you don’t pay.

The scammer will usually request your credit card number or ask you to get a prepaid card from a retailer. Again, Utility Companies do not conduct business this way. When in doubt, call the company using the contact number from your last bill or from the directory. Never use the number supplied by the caller to confirm. And never supply a credit card number to them.

News: Case Management Information For scams, it is important for people to remember to avoid any calls that involve you supplying personal information of any type over the phone or internet, unless you have initiated it through a reputable business. Never supply bank information to anyone calling you. Utilities, banks, IRS, etc. will never call you demanding immediate payments. It is especially true of any payment that requires your credit card information or you obtaining a prepaid credit card. The key warning with any of these calls is be suspicious anytime they try to rush you or say this needs to be done immediately. Often the purpose of those statements is to compel you to act instead of thinking about it.

The bottom line is that everyone needs to be suspicious about their personal information and finances. Once your personal information and credit card information is out by fraudulent means, thousands of dollars can be lost in minutes. Scammers and con artists can be very good and sound very convincing. Don’t be fooled by nice sounding people, as it is just part of the scam. Protect yourself and your money. When in doubt call the police department or your local case manager at the Senior Center. You should never be too embarrassed to report suspicious behavior even if it is after the fact and you are a victim. Your information may be the information that spares someone else the pain of being scammed.

Take Action Against Fraud and Identity Theft From the Wisconsin Identity Theft Coalition, a project of the Coalition of WI Aging Groups.

1. NEVER give out credit card, Social Security number or bank account information by phone or over the internet, unless the transaction was initiated by you with a trusted, reputable vendor, whose name and phone number you have verified independently as legitimate.

2. Keep your personal identifying information in a safe location and refrain from sharing that information with anyone that you do not fully trust.

3. Opt out of credit marketing lists: 1-8885OPTOUT (888-567-8688) 4. Use a shredder to foil garbage thieves.

5. Get on NO Call Lists. For State call 1-866 -966-2255 (renew every two years) and for Federal www.donotcall.gov (permanent).

6. Go over your monthly bank account statements and check for any unauthorized charges.

7. Check your credit reports for any suspicious activity: 1-877-322-8228 or www.annualcreditreport.com. There are three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). If you request a free report from one agency every four months, you can keep track of your credit report all year long.

Monthly Highlights Memory Café In the Spring, Stoughton’s Dementia Friendly Community Coalition has plans to establish a Memory Café. This is a monthly social gathering for individuals with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s or other dementias to meet in a relaxed environment to visit, share common interests and enjoy refreshments.

Led by trained medical professionals, examine medications, home safety, balance, vision and more. Learn simple and fun balance and strength training exercises. With support from Safe Communities, Dane County, and the Stoughton Senior Center, the program builds confidence, reduces falls, and prevents hospital stays. $35 participation fee includes instruction, guest expert presentations, printed materials, and snacks. Intergenerational Through the Ages: Zoo to You Friday, April 14, 1:00 PM Join in the fun as Henry Vilas Zoo will be bringing the ‘Zoo to You’! You’ll learn about their Education Animals and meet them close up.

This one-hour presentation will feature live animals and a variety of animal classification, history, and behaviors. This intergenerational zoo program is appropriate for all ages as we encourage you to bring children, neighbors, friends and family!

Livsreise Tour Wednesday, April 26, 10:00 AM Join us for a guided tour with videos and information provided. The Livsreise center tells the story of Norwegian immigration to the Midwest from 1825 to 1910, when 800,000 people left Norway for a new life. They house a combination of historic artifacts along with electronic and interactive displays, immigrant story books, and large “map wall” where visitors can build a sample immigrant journey. They also have another small gallery housing the“ Sacred Symbols of Norway” exhibit on loan from the Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, Iowa. In addition they have a small genealogy lab where you can research your family lineage. Please sign up by April 24th.

Senior Center Nutrition Program: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please talk with staff regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District in Dane County every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu for the month is on the following page.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. The Nutrition Site offers meals from the menus on p.15. Note the below salad choice available on Thursdays only at the center. Page 2 for transportation info.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $10.23 Delivered Meal: $8.54.

Please be reminded that, cancellations and/ or reservations should be made by 1:00 PM the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county. Thank you.
