Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

News: Case Management Information American Heart Month February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women. Just like an engine makes a car go, your heart keeps your body running. As you grow older, some changes in the heart and blood vessels are normal, but others are caused by disease.

Choices you might make every day can contribute to heart disease. Do you smoke? Are you overweight? Do you spend the day sitting at a desk or in front of the TV? Do you avoid doing exercise?

Do you drink a lot of alcohol? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, making healthy lifestyle changes might help you prevent or delay heart disease. Take the following steps to keep your heart healthy: Be more physically active.

Aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most or all days of the week. Every day is best. It doesn’t have to be done all at once; 10minute periods will do. Start by doing activities you enjoy —brisk walking, dancing, swimming, bicycling, or playing basketball or tennis.

If you smoke, quit.

It’s never too late to get some benefit from quitting smoking.

Follow a heart healthy diet.

Choose low-fat foods and those that are low in salt. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and foods high in fiber. Following a healthy eating plan and being physically active might help you.

Keep a healthy weight.

Your healthcare provider can check your weight and height to learn your BMI (body mass index).

A BMI of 25 or higher means you are at risk for heart disease, as well as diabetes and other health conditions. Following a healthy eating plan and being physically active might help you.

News: Case Management Information Substance Abuse in Older Adults Reprinted with permission by the GWAAR Legal Services Team

Substance abuse among older adults is a growing problem. As Baby Boomers age and America’s demographics change, substance abuse in older adults is becoming a widespread issue. The nature of substance abuse can vary. However, a growing number of older Americans are suffering from alcohol and prescription drug abuse. Unfortunately, older adults’ substance abuse is often undetected and untreated.

It is suggested that healthcare providers often overlook substance abuse in older adults. Further, some argue that substance abuse is hard to detect in older adults because its symptoms are quite similar to those of other medical issues. For example, substance abuse can cause fatigue, irritability, and/or chronic pain. However, these symptoms could also be a result of common medical conditions.

Moreover, substance abuse is associated with young people, not older adults. Additionally, the stigma or denial that is often associated with substance abuse may hinder an individual from discussing his/ her concerns with their health care providers. Individuals 65 and older make up 14.5% of the population. However, this group accounts for one-third of the nation’s total prescription drug use.

It is suggested that older adults are more likely to be prescribed multiple long-term prescriptions, which may contribute to the possibility of improper medication use.

Patients are encouraged to take precautions when using prescriptions medications. The following is a list of easy ways to promote proper medication use: · Always follow prescribed directions; · Be aware of potential interactions among the drugs that you are prescribed; · Never use another person’s prescription; and · Always discuss all of your medications with your healthcare provider, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements.

As one ages, his/her body is increasingly sensitive to the harmful effects of alcohol. Accordingly, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends that individuals 65 and older limit alcohol consumption to 7 drinks a week (but no more than three drinks on any one day).

If you have concerns regarding substance abuse, be sure to talk with your health care provider.

Medicare may cover treatment for substance abuse if you receive services from a Medicareparticipating facility, your doctor indicates that the treatment is medically necessary, and your doctor works with you to set up a plan of treatment. Mental health conditions, like depression or anxiety, can affect anyone. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, a lack of energy, or an increased use or alcohol or other drugs, you should speak with your health care provider.

Rosemaling Class Tuesdays, February 28, March 7, 14, 21 & 28, April 4, 6:00-8:00 PM Mary Knoflicek will be back to teach rosemaling at the Senior Center. She has been teaching for over 25 years. The cost of this class is $65 and includes supplies (wood, paints and patterns, and one brush) for beginners and more advanced projects. More supplies could be added for a nominal fee. Please sign up at the reception desk by February 24th and bring your payment with you the first night of class.

Through the Ages – Mason Bee Presentation Thursday, February 23, 3:00 PM Did you know that there are bees that do not sting; gentle little bees that pollinate even more than honey bees? Unfortunately, these little female bees do not live in hives or communities. They are forced to find accommodations before they can do their very important work—places like reeds, cracks in the pavement, or deserted woodpecker drillings. We can help by crafting simple bee hotels so they can get on with their pollinating. A bee hotel can be as simple as a tin can packed with straws or as intricate as garden art. Join Cinder Roherty as she explains more about these busy bees. Invite your family, grandchildren and friends to make your own bee hotel and save the planet, one bee hotel at a time. Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please talk with staff regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District in Dane County every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu for the month is on the following page.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. The Nutrition Site offers meals from the menus on p.15, (Note additional meal choice of a salad available on Thursdays). Page 2 for transportation info.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $10.23 Delivered Meal: $8.54.

Please be reminded that, cancellations and/ or reservations should be made by 1:00 PM the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county. Thank you.

Artichokes are native to the Mediterranean region, an area of the world with one of the lowest rates of chronic disease and one of the highest life expectancies. Mediterranean cuisine features artichokes, other vegetables and fruits, and little saturated fat.

Artichokes are a delicious fit for a healthy lifestyle.

One large artichoke contains only 25 calories, no fat, 170 milligrams of potassium, and is a good source of vitamin C, folate, magnesium and dietary fiber. The trick is to keep dressings, sauces and dips low in fat, too.

Some new exciting studies have shown that artichokes contain an unusual amount of anti-oxidants, in the form of phytonutrients and in a study done by the United States Department of Agriculture, artichokes rank as the number one vegetable in ant-oxidant count. Among the most powerful phytonutrients are Cynarin and Silymarin, which have strong positive effects on the liver. It is interesting to note here, that over the years, artichokes have been reputed to help in the cure of liver diseases, liver cancer and to cure hangovers!

The typical American diet is notoriously lacking in fiber, due to the heavy reliance on processed foods and meat products. Adding a large artichoke to the daily diet would add one-fourth the amount recommended by the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services. One medium artichoke has more fiber than a cup of prunes!

Hot Artichoke Dip Mayo Clinic Chef Staff Dec. 2012

2 cups artichoke hearts 1 tablespoon black pepper (or less) 4 cups chopped spinach 1 teaspoon minced thyme 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon minced parsley 1 cup white beans, prepared 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream Mix all ingredients together. Put in glass or ceramic dish and bake at 350 F for 30 minutes.

Serve with whole-grain bread, crackers or raw vegetables for dipping, or can dip used as a baked potato topping. Serves 8.
