Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

RSVP Driver Program Donation-based transportation to medical appointments for seniors 60 years or older.

New riders are to call ASAP with qualifying information for approval. Rides based on driver availability; 48-hour advance notice is required.

Stoughton United Ministries Affordable Transportation Program Low-income residents of all ages are eligible for free transportation Monday – Friday to various types of appointments in Madison and its nearby suburbs. Anyone whose income is less than 225% of the federal poverty rate is eligible.

Also, rides to the City and United Methodist Church Food Pantries are available at no cost.

Qualifying individuals are considered based on driver availability. Calls may also be made directly to SUM: 873-3273.

Vets Helping Vets Program Volunteer drivers provide medical, job application and support transportation within Dane County for any veterans, including immediate family members regardless of age.

News: Case Management Information Scams

We all like to help those in need. It’s human nature for us to do so. However, there are many ways to help others while still protecting you from scams and thieves that prey on our good heartedness. Those that prey on us know that most people generally like to help others. They often design their scams precisely around people’s desire to help.

In an example of a recent local scam, a young woman comes to your door and says that her car broke down and she needs to use your phone to call for help. Simple enough, right?

You hand her your cellphone or let her into the house to make a call. The woman makes the call and sounds disappointed and turns and asks for a glass of water. Now you leave the room and she proceeds to check for valuables close by.

When you return with the water, she begins by telling you she has young kids in the car and no money for a taxi. You feel sorry for her and give her money. How can this be wrong you say?

The next day you find out from your neighbors that this same woman had been to five houses in the same area.

This is just one of many types of scams that are perpetrated every day all across the country and especially to the elderly. Most of us remember those days when you didn’t even lock the doors to your house when you left, or a time when you knew all your neighbors by their first names. Those days are not lost forever, but you need to understand that there are more and more people that will prey on our sympathies.

Crimes against the elderly continue to skyrocket each year, as criminals continue to find more ways to carry out both new and old scams.

In fact, seniors lose billions of dollars a year to home repair scams, investment scams, IRS scams and various other cons targeting older people.

So what should you do? Be suspicious.

Be careful. When in doubt don’t let them in and call the police department. We are here to help those people that legitimately need help. We will come and find out for sure if they are truly in need or if they are just trying a scam. Usually, the scammers will leave when you tell them you are calling the police to get them help.

If someone calls you and says they are from your bank or the IRS, or even the police.

Think before you respond. Your bank typically would never call you unless you initiated a contact and never pressure you for personal information. Police will never call you demanding payment or bail money for someone you know.

Never give personal information to anyone over the phone or on the internet. This includes someone asking to “verify” your information.

Scammers can now present any phone number and name they want on a caller ID. So don’t trust caller ID unless it’s someone you know and a number you recognize.

Whenever in doubt, call the police. We can help you to ensure you remain safe and secure.

News: Case Management Information Heart-Healthy at Any Age: 60s & Beyond Source: American Heart Association, Go Red For Women

The more risk factors you can keep under control, the less likely you are to have a future heart attack. But as you get older, your blood pressure, cholesterol and other heart-related numbers tend to rise.

No matter what your age, you can take matters into your own hands to help reduce your risk of heart disease. It’s never too late to live hearthealthy, which is why Go Red For Women wants you to consider your heart health at every age. Learn what you can do to prevent heart disease in your 60s and beyond.

Know your risk.

Studies show that the number of women who have heart attacks increases dramatically, especially after menopause. But the good news is that you have the power to reduce your risk, and if you do have a heart condition, there is plenty you can do to manage it.

Know your numbers.

Knowing the numbers that impact your heart is an important step toward healthy living. Here’s a quick overview of the numbers you need to know and your goals. Be sure to talk to your doctor to see how your current numbers measure up. · Total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL · HDL (good) cholesterol 50 mg/dL or higher · LDL (bad) cholesterol less than 100 mg/dL · Triglycerides 150 mg/dL · Blood pressure less than 120/80 mm Hg · Body Mass Index less than 25 kg/m2 · Waist circumference less than 35 in.

Eat heart-healthy meals.

Whenever you eat or are cooking for yourself or your family, have meals that help maintain your heart health.

They can still be delicious!

Focus on including foods that are nutrient-dense like colorful veggies and fruits, fiber-rich, whole-grains, lean meats, skinless chicken and fish rich in omega-3s, and fat-free, 1 percent fat and low-fat dairy. These foods can give your heart the nutrients it needs as well as improve your cholesterol and blood pressure.

Keep moving.

The older we get, the trickier exercise can be.

But it’s still very important to make physical activity a top priority in your life. If exercise is new to you, start slow and talk to your doctor for suggestions on the types of exercise or workouts that you can explore. If working out has never been your thing, that’s okay; walking, even short brisk walks for as little as 10 minutes throughout the day, can provide enough physical activity to keep your heart in shape. Your goal should be to get 40 minutes of exercise three to four times per week. Light weight lifting, water aerobics and yoga are all great exercises for senior women.

Kitchen Corner Senior Center Nutrition Program: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please talk with our staff.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District in Dane County every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu is on the following page. Nutrition Site: Note the additional salad choice available on Fridays and the site/home cooked meals on Thursdays. See pg. 2 for transportation information. Cost of the meals:Individuals 60 or older pay by donation.

Suggested donation is $4.00. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $10.23 Delivered Meal: $8.54. Please be reminded that reservations should be made by 1:00 PM the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the center and/or county. .

Home-cooked meals are served at our Senior Center every Thursday between 11:30AM to 12:30PM. The cost is a suggested donation of $4.00; please pay what you can afford. In order to ensure we have a meal available for you please reserve at least one day in advance. Walk-ins may be accepted.

Daily Recommendations for Seniors According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the regulations for seniors are: 1-1/2 to 2 servings of fresh fruit; 2 to 2-1/2 cups of fresh vegetables (e.g. anti-oxidant rich dark leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, as well as oranges and yellows, such as carrots and squash); 1,200 mg. calcium (e.g., low-fat milk, yogurt, or cheese. Non-dairy sources include tofu, broccoli and almonds); 6 to 7 ounces of grains (choose whole grains over processed white flour for more nutrients and a higher fiber count); and approximately 65 grams of protein.

The following are some very easy breakfast ideas for seniors: Warm oatmeal and berries: Place frozen or fresh berries in a crockpot at a low heat setting. Add a pat of butter and one serving of old-fashioned oats and water. Cover and cook on low, for several hours (or overnight).

This will give it the consistency of bread pudding. (The easier option is adding berries to warm oatmeal.)

A hard-boiled egg: Accompany with a side of fresh fruit and a slice of whole-wheat toast.

Yogurt parfait: Mix together yogurt, nuts and fruit. It's a good combo of healthy fat, Vitamin C and carbohydrates.

Power toast: For healthy fat and some protein, spread peanut butter or almond butter on whole -wheat toast; enjoy fresh fruit on the side.

Poached egg: Place egg on top of whole-wheat toast and steamed asparagus. Top with a small amount of butter.
