Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

Stoughton United Ministries (SUM) Affordable Transportation Program Low-income residents of all ages are eligible for free transportation Monday – Friday to various types of appointments in Madison and its nearby suburbs. Anyone whose income is less than 225% of the federal poverty rate is eligible.

Also, rides to the City and United Methodist Church Food Pantries are available at no cost.

News: Case Management Information November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month Alzheimer's disease causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over several years. Eventually, memory loss becomes severe enough to interfere with daily activities.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 5.7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s. Increasing age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, and most people with Alzheimer’s are over 65. As the size and proportion of the U.S. population age 65 and older continue to increase, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s will grow.

One of the earliest noticeable signs of Alzheimer’s disease is worsening or more frequent confusion or memory loss within the previous year. As people get older, they may notice occasional problems with remembering certain things. However, severe memory loss, like that experienced by people with Alzheimer’s, is not a normal part of aging.

As the disease progresses, Alzheimer’s leads to increasingly serious symptoms, including disorientation, changes in mood and behavior, worsening confusion about events or time, unfounded suspicions about family or friends, difficulty speaking, and even difficulty walking.

People who are concerned about confusion or memory loss should speak with a health care professional who can do a memory screening and discuss possible treatments.

Alzheimer’s is also very stressful for caregivers.

Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer’s requires a lot of time and patience. Keeping track of medical appointments and prescriptions, as well as work, family, and social obligations, can be overwhelming. If you are a caregiver, here are some tips to manage your stress: 

Seek out community resources, including adult day programs, in-home care, and meal delivery. In addition, there may be a caregiver support group in your area. It may help to know that you are not alone and that other people are going through the same things you are.

News: Case Management Information Know what to expect. Learn about how Alzheimer’s affects those who have been diagnosed with it and what changes to expect.

This will help you understand how your role will be different with time.  Take time for yourself. Ask other family members or friends to step in, even for a short time, while you run errands, exercise, or just relax. Try to keep up with your hobbies and stick to a normal schedule as much as you can so that you do not become resentful over time. 

Make legal and financial plans. Talk to your loved one about healthcare and financial powers of attorney, living wills, and do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders soon after a diagnosis so the affected person can participate in decisionmaking. Having these plans in place can reduce stress for the whole family. If you need more information about these documents, talk to an elder law attorney.

Changes in Service Areas Please be aware that Dane County has changed some service boundaries for 2019.

This means that for a few seniors (mainly those living in the Towns of Dunn, Rutland and Pleasant Springs) the services they receive may be coming from a different senior center or focal point in 2019 than they did previously. Dane County is attempting to consolidate services so that people can deal with a single agency to take care of their case management, transportation and home delivered meal needs.

If you are currently receiving services and you will be affected by this change, you will be receiving further communication about the upcoming changes.

Issues of legal access can tie the hands of the best-intentioned caregiver, particularly when it comes to making tough decisions about money and healthcare. Here are key legal documents you may need to make critical decisions: 1. Health Care Proxy or Power of Attorney for Healthcare: This document designates a “proxy” with the power to make medical decisions if your parent is incapacitated.

2. Advance Directive or Life Care Plan: In this document, your parent indicates preferences for medical and end of life care, including granting permission for or excluding specific life-extending measures. Sometimes the health care proxy is rolled into this document.

3. HIPAA Release: Without this form, your parent’s doctors can’t share or discuss medical information, which is protected under the Health Insurance Portability or Accountability Act. Power of Attorney: This term covers a range of documents granting you the authority to handle financial matters. A durable power of attorney turns all financial matters over to you, while narrower documents are available from banks and other institutions giving you the ability to pay bills and access funds Information provided by the GWAAR Legal Services Team

News: COA & Community Information Home Energy Assistance

Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for October 2, 2018 Director Comments: Appreciates staff!  Survey from the County’s Area Agency on Aging is on our website requesting responses to guide their next 3-year Aging Plan.  We have received Bryant Foundation funds to replace the tables on our main level.  Center parking is an increasing issue.  Stoughton Dementia Friendly Coalition has developed purple folders with information and resources that we hope local clinics will give when they diagnose patients with dementia.

These are available at the Center.

Committees: Fund Development: Meeting with financial planner to distribute new brochure; Viking Brew Pub fundraiser tickets on sale!; planning a mailing to announce Spring 25-year festivities.

Public Relations: Group is discussing how to coordinate a community volunteer fair.

Legislative Update:  A lot is being proposed for the City Budget with limited funds.  The County is proposing to change the meal and transportation services in 2019 so they align with the current case management service areas. More news to come from the County (See Page 5 of this newsletter). As always, we welcome community members from all surrounding Townships for any activity, meals or entertainment.

Golden Pass for Seniors Seniors age 60 or older in the Stoughton Area School District are eligible for a Golden Pass from the school district. The pass will allow you to attend athletic games at the high school free of charge. The card does not include tournaments. Please stop in at the Senior Center to get your Golden Pass.

AARP Smart Driver Class Thursday, Nov. 1, 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM This AARP Smart Driver course is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for drivers age 50 and older.

For more than 35 years, the course has taught millions of drivers proven safety strategies so they can continue driving safely for as long as possible. Cost: $15 for AARP members $20 for non-members. 873-8585.

Game Time: Rummikub November 6, 10:00 AM November 20, 1:00 PM In this game you try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 tiles or more, or 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers on the tiles are like card suits. Players start putting more and more tiles in play, and the options for your upcoming turns can become more complex, challenging, and exciting. Come learn how to play, or if you know how already, come join the fun!

Senior Center Nutrition Program: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please talk with our staff.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District in Dane County every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu is on the following page.

Nutrition Site: Note the additional salad choice available on Fridays and the site/home cooked meals on Thursdays. See pg. 2 for transportation information.

Cost of the meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $9.73 Delivered Meal: $8.54.

Please remember reservations should be made by1:00 PM the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of are still subject to payment to the Center/County. .

Peanut Butter Facts A spoon full of peanut butter is a sweet treat that can help one get through the day or indulge a certain craving. When it is natural, this treat has a number of important and surprising benefits to it. This is especially true for aging elderly adults. A spoonful of peanut butter can be part of a balanced, healthy diet, and it only adds about 100 calories. Here are some great health benefits that seniors can start enjoying from a little bit of natural peanut butter.

 Adding Energy: Many seniors struggle with maintaining their energy levels as they age. All of those proteins and natural carbohydrates in peanut butter can give you that extra boost of energy you need.  Promoting Better Heart Health: A daily dose of peanut better can be a great step forward in helping any senior boost their cardiovascular system. This is all thanks to the monosaturated fats that can help with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Resveratrol, which is an antioxidant, can also lower a person’s chances of developing heart disease.  Boosting the Brain: Seniors can use a little extra brain power as they age and peanut butter may be the key. With a majority of elderly adults struggling with brain-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, a little extra brain power can only help. This comes from the vitamin E and niacin that are found in peanut butter. These two nutrients can actually help slow the cognitive decline that impacts so many seniors today.

If you don’t love the taste of peanut butter, consider trying almond butter, cashew butter or hazelnut butter, they are all great healthy alternatives. Just make sure to check the label and find a spread that isn’t filled with chemicals and preservatives and you can rest assured you will be getting the nutrients you need.
