Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

RSVP Driver Program Donation-based transportation to medical appointments for seniors 60 years or older.

New riders are to call ASAP with qualifying information for approval. Rides based on driver availability; 48-hour advance notice is required.

Stoughton United Ministries Affordable Transportation Program Low-income residents of all ages are eligible for free transportation Monday – Friday to various types of appointments in Madison and its nearby suburbs. Anyone whose income is less than 225% of the federal poverty rate is eligible.

Also, rides to the City and United Methodist Church Food Pantries are available at no cost.

Qualifying individuals are considered based on driver availability. Calls may also be made directly to SUM: 873-3273.

Vets Helping Vets Program Volunteer drivers provide medical, job application and support transportation within Dane County for any veterans, including immediate family members regardless of age.

News: Case Management Information Comparing Medicare Advantage Plans to Medicare Supplements Reprinted by permission from the GWAAR Legal Services Team

The Fall Medicare Annual Enrollment Period is a great time for individuals to review both their health coverage and drug coverage under Medicare. The annual enrollment period (AEP) takes place from October 15 through December 7th every year, with coverage changes becoming effective on January 1st. Below is a very general overview of the differences between a Medicare

Advantage plan and a Medicare supplement (also called a Medigap plan). The Advantage plan and supplement are both completely optional, but they help reduce consumer out of pocket costs under Original Medicare. For more information on evaluating the pros and cons of each plan, contact your local Elder Benefit Specialist, or the Board on Aging and Long-Term Care Medigap helpline at (800) 242-1060. It is also illegal for a consumer to be sold a Medigap plan if enrolled in an Advantage plan.

Medicare Advantage Plan Privatized plan entirely replaces Medicare A & B. Typically has network provider restrictions (HMO, PPO, PFFS).

Must re-evaluate plan costs, premiums, and provider networks annually during AEP. Many include Medicare Part D drug coverage (optional).

Plan is required to provide the same level of coverage as Original Medicare A & B.

Medicare Supplement Policy is in addition to Original Medicare A & B; wraps around A & B coverage.

Works nationwide with any provider who accepts Original Medicare.

Typically enroll at age 65 and keep same plan for lifetime.

No drug coverage. Must enroll in a separate Part D plan.

Policy typically pays Part A & B deductibles, copays, and co-insurance.

Limited or reduced coverage outside provider network unless emergency. (Some Adv plans offer 50% coverage out of network.)

Need a special enrollment period (SEP) to get in/out of plan.

Nationwide coverage. Option of adding foreign travel rider.

No underwriting. Anyone is eligible to enroll except for people with end stage renal disease.

May need to pass medical underwriting unless in a guaranteed issue period. A person cannot be turned down for a supplement if they enroll within the first 6 months they turn age 65 or enroll in Part B. If Medicare covers the service, typically there are no out of pocket costs for the consumer (depends on the type of policy and options selected).

Consumer must still pay the monthly Part B premium (and Part A premium if applicable).

Governed by WI Office of Insurance Commissioner.

Sold by local private insurance agents or by calling the policy directly (not listed on the plan finder; cannot enroll by calling Medicare).

Annual cap on in-network, out of pocket costs for medical services is typically $3,400 or $6,700 (depending on the plan selected).

Consumer must still pay the monthly Part B premium (and Part A premium if applicable).

Governed by CMS/Medicare rules.

Do a planfinder, enroll through 800MEDICARE, or consult a private insurance agent.

News: Case Management Information Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period

It’s that time again! The Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15th and continues until December 7th of 2017. This is the time frame when Medicare Beneficiaries are able to enroll in and/or change their Part C and/or Part D plans. During this time, a person on Medicare can: Join a Part D plan; Drop a Part D plan; Switch to a new Part D plan; Drop a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare; or Join a Medicare Advantage plan with or without drug coverage.

Changes made during this annual enrollment time period will become effective on January 1, 2018. It is highly recommended that anyone on a current Medicare Part D plan at least check to make sure they are still enrolled in the best plan for their needs going into the new year. Part D plans are contractually allowed to change the terms of coverage every year, which means that plans are allowed to change premiums, formularies (list of covered medications), pharmacy networks, etc.

The simplest way to evaluate an existing Part D plan or choose a new plan is to go to the www.medicare.gov website and use the “planfinder” tool to search potential plans.

Rock Painting Friday, October 27 10:00-11:30 AM Have you heard about the rock decorating craze in our community? There is a wonderful activity happening right in our own backyard, and the Senior Center would like to offer an opportunity to keep it going. Kids, parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends are all welcome to join in on this free and fun event of painting and decorating rocks! All supplies will be provided however if you have rocks to contribute we’d gladly accept them. You can also bring a paint smock if you wish. We will hide the rocks next spring for others to find. Appetite for the Arts – Literature and American Art Friday, October 6, 12:00-1:00 PM Join us for a special lunch and an engaging art lesson from Michael Hecht. He will be discussing influences of literature and American Art including Walt Whitman, Andrew Wyeth and Robert Frost. Kitchen Corner Senior Center Nutrition Program: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please talk with staff regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District in Dane County every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu for the month is on the following page.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. The Nutrition Site offers meals from the menus on p.15. Note the below salad choice available on Thursdays only at the center. Page 2 for transportation info.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $10.23 Delivered Meal: $8.54.

Please be reminded that reservations should be made by 1:00 PM the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the center/county.

Smoothies!!!

Smoothies are an excellent way to eat nutritiously. They're easy to make, take a couple of minutes to prepare, utilize raw fruits and vegetables containing fiber and vitamins and are simply delicious. They're also excellent for people who want to lose weight, have small appetites or find it hard to consume solid food.

It's what you put in your smoothie that makes the difference.

In the green vegetable department, try adding spinach, Swiss chard, kale, collard greens or green peppers to your fruit smoothie for a whopping dose of vitamin K, iron, vitamin C and calcium. Some greens have a strong, bitter taste, so experiment with your favorites to find a winner.

Try out a veggie-packed strawberry smoothie that tastes really good. Add ¼ cup of cooked broccoli and half an avocado to six ounces of vanilla yogurt, ¾ cup of pomegranate juice and a cup of strawberries, fresh or frozen. Blend and drink!

How about a green smoothie that doesn't involve a dairy product, yet is still as tasty as it should be. Combine 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice, ½ a cup of water, 2 cups of stemmed and chopped collard greens (or spinach), 1 ½ cups of mango, and 1 cup of green grapes.

If you're a veggie lover and can accept the idea of a smoothie with no sweetness, try a total vegetable smoothie with no dairy. Add several vine tomatoes, a large red bell pepper, 1 small zucchini, 2 or 3 onion slices, several celery stalks, ¼ avocado, and chili powder and cayenne pepper to taste, with water for accepted thickness. You can also add a little garlic, if you like.

There are so many value-added additions you can make to your smoothie. You can add ground flax seeds, hemp hearts, wheat germ, steel-cut oats, all of which add their special nutritional benefits to your diet.
