Parks & Healthy Communities Even a ten minute walk in a natural environment provides health benefits. Did you know that spending time in nature and green spaces improves your overall health and well-being? When we access parks and open green space, it increases: yy Social well-being, by serving as a place to gather with family and friends and make new social connections; this is especially true for children. yy Physical Health, as we are more likely to be active and move more in open spaces and natural environments. yy Mental health and well-being, by reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Even a ten minute walk in a natural environment provides health benefits.
The City maintains over 100 parks and open spaces, ranging from smaller neighbourhood playgrounds to larger municipal parks. The recent Get Into It! parks promotion highlighted some of the lesser utilized City parks and encouraged residents to explore their neighbourhood parks and take advantage of their amenities. The City’s four municipal parks Bowring, Bannerman, Victoria and Rotary ‘Sunshine’ - are well known and used often, however, there are dozens of community and neighbourhood parks throughout St. John’s. Many of them connect to a network of trails, making it safe and easy to be active.
around St. John’s. Pippy Park is the largest urban park in Canada and offers plenty of recreational opportunities year round. Bowring Park covers 132 acres (53 hectares) and has one of the most diverse populations of trees in the province. Throughout St. John’s there are over 200 kilometres of walking trails, and the East Coast Trail is a 300 kilometre hiking trail that is recognized worldwide for providing access to our breathtaking coast. Find a green space or City park where you can be active, connect with family, friends and neighbours, and experience the physical, mental and social benefits of spending time outdoors.

Welcome Ashore It was an early morning in May. The sun was yet to rise over the Narrows and the Silverwind, the first cruise ship of the season, was a few hours out from arrival in the harbour. “I’m usually up with the sun on cruise ship days,” said Lydia Spurrell, City of St. John’s Ambassador. “I have been volunteering with the City of St. John’s Ambassador Program since 2007 and I am very proud to represent my country and my province when our visitors arrive.” The Ambassadors are a dedicated group of volunteers who provide tourists with information, directions, and a warm welcome, greeting passengers as they disembark, often as early as 7 a.m.
6
CITY GUIDE | FALL 2019
“My favorite part about being an ambassador is meeting people from all over the world,” said Rhona Hynes. “It’s really a lot of fun and I can’t say enough about how proud I am to be a part of the warm welcome visitors receive when they arrive.” The Ambassador Program has a total of 32 dedicated volunteers with two to three new volunteers accepted in the program each year. For each ship arrival there are up to 10 Ambassadors in attendance throughout the day.
The sights, sounds and smells of downtown can be overwhelming and navigating a new city in a foreign country is not always easy for a tourist. So, in 2018, the City of St. John’s began an Ambassador Walking Program to assist visitors who are exploring downtown by foot. All program volunteers receive product knowledge training and up-to-date information from various attractions, shops and restaurants in the downtown core.
“My favorite part about being an ambassador is meeting people from all over the world.”
DOCKSIDE DELIGHTS Gabriel is one of many dedicated Newfoundland dogs that participate in the Dockside Welcome. “Each and every ship that comes through the Narrows is greeted with a dockside welcome that includes a Newfoundland dog,” said Jeanette Kinny, dog owner. “Gabe is calm, patient and really loves welcoming people to the city.” In addition to the Newfoundland dog and Ambassadors, the welcome includes traditional

vendor and a list of Newfoundland sayings.
“I play the accordion and fiddle,” said local musician Jason March, “and there is no greater feeling than supplying the musical backdrop for our visitors arrival!”
“Captains play a key role in destination selection and a good first impression can encourage the return of a cruise line,” says Claire Sullivan, Marketing Manager of Cruise NL. “Providing a personalized welcome from key tourism stakeholders show the captain our commitment to the cruise industry in St. John’s, which goes a long way toward cruise line retention.”
Once on solid ground, cruise ship passengers can be seen dancing and clapping along with the musicians as they make their way from the ship into the city’s downtown. Cruise Ship Captains also receive a warm welcome to the City of St. John’s by a special delegation including representatives from the Port Authority, City Council and Cruise NL. Ship captains are presented with a gift from a local
After a busy day exploring the sights and sounds of our historic city the ship prepares for departure. As the ship departs through the Narrows, a farewell musket salute is performed by Parks Canada to say ‘so long’ to our visitors.

1
If you haven’t already, write your address on the white label on the side of the cart with a permanent marker.
2
When placing your cart for collection please ensure the arrows on the lid of the cart are pointing towards the street.
3
Don’t place carts on lawns and keep one metre away from parked vehicles, poles and recycling and yard waste bags.
4 5 6
Ensure your cart lid is fully closed. Carts hold four, full, standard-sized bags of garbage.
Each cart has a radio frequency identifying (RFID) tag and individual serial numbers. Carts are assigned to a property - not a person - and residents who move leave the cart behind.
The cart is the property of the City, however liability for the cart rests with the property owner. Property owners are charged to replace carts that are vandalized, stolen or lost. The City replaces defective carts or those damaged because of collection efforts.
For more on the automated garbage program, go to curbitstjohns.ca
Reduce Your Waste with Improved Recycling We encourage residents to check out all the items that can be recycled at the curb in blue bags, including these bulky items that take up space in the cart: yy Cardboard yy Boxboard (eg. cracker and cereal boxes, etc.) yy Milk cartons yy Steel cans yy Plastic clam shells yy Laundry soap containers To find out what you can recycle, go to curbitstjohns.ca

Yard Waste
Curbside Collection From April 29 – November 29 the City of St. John’s collects yard waste (such as leaves and grass clippings) in paper yard waste bags only. Place the paper yard waste bags at the curb and they will be collected biweekly on the same day as your recycling day. Leaves in paper yard waste bags will be composted and used in future landscaping projects.
DID YOU KNOW? In the last two years, our curbside yard waste collection has diverted 1,550 tonnes from the landfill!
yy There is no limit to the number of paper yard waste bags that can be set out for collection at the curb. Yard waste bags must be under 50 lbs and will be collected separately from your garbage and recycling. yy Bagged leaves and grass clippings can also be brought to the Residential Drop Off at Robin Hood Bay until December 12 to be composted.
Mulch Your Leaves and Grass Mulching is the earth-friendly approach to disposing of leaves and grass. It does wonders for your lawn!
Save Time, Money, and your Back No need to rake your grass clippings, buy bags, or lug the bags to the curb. By mulching-in-place you save time and money.
Soil Enrichment Grass and leaf mulch puts nutrients back to the soil. Your lawn and garden will require less fertilizer and other additives.
Water Conservation Grass and leaf mulch helps to retain moisture in soils. When soil is covered with mulch, the mulch lowers the soil’s exposure to sun and wind which reduces evaporation.
14
CITY GUIDE | FALL 2019
Insulation Mulch acts like an insulating barrier from the heat in the summer, from the cold in the winter and from the wind all year round. Mulch prevents compaction and erosion of soils from wind and rain.
Weed Control Mulch can help prevent the growth of weeds. Add a thick layer - 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3”) - to gardens to reduce the need for herbicides.
Tax Savings No disposal fees are charged to the City for yard waste, therefore allowing for a more efficient use of your tax dollars.
What else can I do with my leaves? yy Dig leaves directly into your garden to add organic matter and nutrients to the soil. yy Put leaf mulch on gardens and flower beds and around shrubs and trees.
Learn to Compost
yy Add 2.5 cm (1 inch) layers of leaf mulch to your composter while alternating with other materials or use a separate composter for leaves only. For a leaf composter, alternate 15 cm (6 inches) of leaf mulch with a 2.5 cm (1 inch) layer of soil or finished compost and maintain by turning it regularly and keeping it moist.
MUN Botanical Garden 306 Mount Scio Road
Attend a free information session from the experts at the Botanical Garden and buy a compost bin afterwards. Bins are $50 for a standard compost bin, or $75 for a tumbler bin (cash only, please).
yy Rake regular or mulched leaves into a 90 cm (3 foot) pile in the corner of your yard. If leaves are dry, dampen with water. Turn the pile a few times in spring and summer to speed up the decomposition process which can take up to 12 months.

Declutter Your Home The decluttering craze has hit North America, with shows like the popular Tidying Up with Marie Kondo making waves on Netflix. Kondo says that living a simpler, decluttered lifestyle “sparks joy: and there is no doubt that decluttering reduces stress, gives you more energy and gives a feeling of space and comfort.” There are lots of items that can be decluttered in our home from clothes, shoes, cosmetics, toys, paper items and more. If you are considering the benefits of decluttering your life, why not start with something the City of St. John’s makes easy for you to get rid of – paper. From magazines to old books, newspaper and office paper, once you make the decision to remove excess paper from your home these items are easy to recycle; just toss them in your blue bag for paper recycling.
Here are a few tips to help you declutter your home of paper products: yy Tear off the covers from hardcover books; paperbacks can be tossed in the blue bag as is. yy Newspaper can be added directly to your recycling bag, as is. yy Envelopes and office paper can be inserted as well – don’t worry about windowed envelopes; just make sure you remove any paper clips or large binders, including those plastic ring binders, before recycling. Did you know that there are now new markets for our News #6 paper, turning all those magazines, newspapers and books into a blow-in insulation for homes? If you are ready to reduce your stress, increase your energy and feel like you have a bit more space in your home, start putting papers in your recycling blue bags!
Wondering if something is recyclable? Use ‘Put Waste In Its Place’, on our app or website. Just enter the type of item (e.g., plastic bottle, milk carton) and it will tell you how to recycle or properly dispose of it - it’s that easy.

A REAL Act of
KINDNESS
Many thanks to Chris Rooney who donated $290 to the REAL Program through the 2019 Barn Burner. Chris’ donation sent three children to camps this summer! “I have been running hockey programs and tournaments for a few years now and thought it would be a nice idea to do some fundraising to help out a local charity,” explained Chris. “Our last tournament of the year occurs in May and I was looking for a creative way to raise money, so we ran a putting competition in the rink during the hockey tournament as a nice transition from hockey to golf season. “I had first learned about REAL from a friend of mine who worked with Choices For Youth. In looking for a charity for the putting competition fundraiser I wanted to find something close to my heart, one that provides opportunities for local youth to get
involved in athletics. After searching other options it became apparent to me that REAL was the perfect fit for this donation. “The putting competition was a big hit with players and patrons of the 2019 Barn Burner and we managed to raise some money! It was a fun atmosphere and we will definitely continue with this for years to come. REAL staff spent an evening at the tournament and their passion and commitment to the REAL program was apparent; we look forward to working with them again next season.” 100% of all donations to the REAL Program go directly to placing children and youth in recreation, art and music programs. If you or your organization are interested in donating to the REAL Program please contact us.

The Alarming News on
Carbon Monoxide Carbon Monoxide is:
Odorless
Colourless
By Cara Pardy Fire Inspector, St. John’s Regional Fire Department
As the leaves turn from green to orange, and the weather cools, you start preparing for the cold season ahead. Have you thought about the fire safety risks that occur in the fall? To keep you and your family safe this season, let’s look at some important, seasonal fire safety and prevention tips. With the temperatures falling outside, you will be turning up the heat inside. What you may not know is that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires during the winter months. It’s important to have any fuel burning (i.e. wood, oil, propane) heating systems inspected by a qualified professional. These systems haven’t been

used for a few months, so you need to make sure they are safe before you need to use them. If appliances are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) can result.
What is carbon monoxide (CO)? Sadly, I meet many people who are not aware of the dangers of CO and don’t have CO alarms in their homes. CO is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuel such as gasoline, wood, coal, propane and oil burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of CO. Vehicles or generators running in an attached garage can also produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
Only use appliances indoors or in enclosed areas that are approved for indoor use. A person can be poisoned by a small amount of CO over a longer period or by a large amount of CO over a shorter amount of time. Your pets are affected by CO as well.
How would you know if you are experiencing CO poisoning? Exposure to carbon monoxide gas can cause flu-like symptoms such as:
Install Alarms If you have anything in your home that could produce CO, you must have CO alarms. Install them outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. CO alarms need to be plugged all the way into a working outlet, or if battery operated, have working batteries. Along with CO alarms, you also must have working smoke alarms. Install them on every level of your home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms. Replace batteries at least every six months. It’s best to have smoke alarms that are interconnected so if one activates, they all activate. New wireless technology provides an easy way to interconnect smoke alarms making it a simple way to protect your family!

Know Your Home Escape Plan Make a home escape plan and discuss it with your family so you can be fully prepared when an alarm sounds! Get out immediately. Once you’re out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building or one that could have high levels of CO. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Our firefighters have the skills Fire Prevention and equipment to 576-3905 perform rescues. fireprevention@stjohns.ca

Ask a Vet By Dr. Heather Hillier Veterinarian, City of St. John’s
I am often asked for my professional advice when it comes to pets and pet care. Fleas are a popular topic. Here some of my most commonly asked questions.
My pet had fleas and no matter what I use, they keep coming back. Why?
Do I have to use flea control if my pet is indoors only?
There is no quick fix to treat fleas once they are established on a pet and in a home. It will often take months for any flea treatment regiment to be successful, however some key points essential to success are:
Yes. Fleas can thrive in your home and pet infestations can occur in the home any time of year. I recommend having all household pets on flea prevention all year.
I have several cats; can I buy the dog product and share it between the cats? No. Some flea treatments that are safe for dogs can be fatal to cats. It is important to use a flea product for the type of animal you have. If you are treating cats and dogs in the same household, consult your veterinarian to ensure the products you are using are safe for all your pets.
yy Use products that kill fleas at multiple stages of their life cycle, not just the adults or eggs. I recommend purchasing products directly from your veterinarian. yy All furred pets in the household need to be on the appropriate flea treatment year-round. yy Wash all pet bedding regularly in hot water. yy Vacuum all flooring daily (dispose of the vacuum contents after each use). yy In some cases, your home environment may need to be treated separately with a flea spray. yy Rotate the flea products you use. Fleas can develop resistance to a particular product over time.
