Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are a vital part of the City of Reno Inclusion/ Adaptive Recreation program. Volunteers will gain rewarding experiences through assisting Parks and Recreation staff with a variety of programs or providing additional support for participants. We are currently seeking volunteers for our upcoming programs!

SHARING THE LOVE:

Renown Health and Hometown Health Fund Grant to Support 74 Local Non-Profit Community Organizations Including City of Reno Adaptive!

Renown Health’s mission is to make a genuine difference in the health and well-being of people and communities. Yesterday, Reno’s only not-for-profit health system celebrated local organizations with grant funding for 2023 to improve the health and well-being of our community.

“Improving the health and wellness of an entire population of people is not easy. It is a huge task. Nevada continues to rank near the bottom of overall health rankings in the U.S. and suffers from high mortality rates for chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer, and chronic respiratory disease,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO of Renown Health. “We must continue to work with partners in the field, who share our mission- to keep people healthy, to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, and to achieve the vision of a healthier Nevada.”

As a non-profit organization, Renown reinvests every dollar earned back to the community; in staffing, technology, treatments, training, and research to improve health and prevent illness. Yesterday, their senior leadership team took an hour to celebrate and support local not for profit partners for their efforts to improve the well-being of our community, with a boxed lunch, conversation, cake and therapy dogs from Renown’s volunteer program.

“Renown Health has long-standing commitment to the community spans more than 160 years,” said Suzanne Bharati Hendery, MA, APR, Chief Communications & Customer Experience Officer for Renown. “This commitment has grown and evolved through significant thought and care in considering our community’s most pressing health needs. One way this is done is through conducting a periodic, comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The most current assessments were completed by an external health care consulting service working with Renown and include quantitative and qualitative data that serve to guide both our community benefit and strategic planning. Through the CHNA process, Renown Health has identified the greatest health needs among our communities, enabling Renown to ensure our resources are appropriately directed toward outreach, prevention, education, and wellness opportunities where the greatest impact can be realized.”

Renown’s Community Benefit grant funding process for 2023 is now complete. This is the second year of Renown’s 3-year Community Health Needs Plan that seeks to improve the priorities of Healthy Behaviors; Immunizations and Infectious Diseases; Behavioral Health (Mental Health & Substance Abuse) and Youth & Adolescent Health.

The success of the health system’s partnerships in improving the health of Washoe County is measured in the health statistics and data that is reported at the local, state, and national level on the website, NevadaTomorrow.org.

SPORTS

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY

Thursdays 2 - 5 p.m. $50

Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center - 1301 Valley Road

Wheelchair or Quad Rugby is a fast paced and competitive sport for individuals with physical disabilities that affect all four extremities. Players use special “Rugby Wheelchairs” to play the sport. These chairs are very maneuverable and can take a hit or two. Rugby players must be able to push their own wheelchairs.

RENO RUMBLE WHEELCHAIR RUGBY TOURNAMENT

October 27 - October 29

Plumas Gym - 475 Monroe

The City of Reno will host their annual wheelchair rugby tournament. Teams from the United States Wheelchair Rugby Association (USWRA) will join the High Fives Wheelchair Rugby Team in a fun filled and competitive weekend of wheelchair rugby. SLED HOCKEY

Fridays 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. $50

Reno Ice - 15500 Wedge Parkway

Participants with physical disabilities will get a chance to learn about sled hockey and get on the ice. All equipment and on-ice instruction provided. Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes. No prior experience necessary.

WHEELCHAIR SKILLS AND DRILLS

Saturdays 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. $50

Whether you’re just getting started or looking to develop your skills to get to the next level, this program will help you along your journey through sport. Practices will focus on conditioning and sport specific drills (wheelchair basketball, power soccer, etc.).

Are you interested in the extreme challenge of wheelchair basketball? Wheelchair basketball is a sport for everyone - people who use wheelchairs for mobility and people who don’t.

Our adaptive recreation equipment is available to rent (sports wheelchairs, beach wheelchairs, hand cycles, etc.) Affordable prices for participants to try before they buy.

These classes fosters both technology and social skills and is geared toward teens of all abilities.

Learn the basics of creating electronic music in a hands-on environment.

This third annual elegant prom event in honor of our friends and neighbors with developmental disabilities in Greater Douglas County and surrounding areas. Semi-Formal Attire. Food, drinks, dancing, raffles and much more!

We are beyond excited to be hosting this event with bestselling author and autistic disrupter Tiffany Hammond. Healing the Divide Between Autism Parents and Autistic Self-Advocates

Online spaces have turned into battlegrounds between autistic self-advocates and parents raising individuals with autism. Heated arguments over language, symbols, and support methods has resulted in division within the community. How can we heal this divide so our community can work together?

Classes will cover orientation to equipment, assessment of fitness level, proper technique to develop strength, endurance and flexibility, and discuss fitness goals. PGA HOPE is the flagship military program of PGA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. PGA HOPE introduces golf to all Veterans to enhance their mental, social, physical and emotional well-being.

In lieu of our monthly newsletter, we are sending out an email about all things Buddy Walk! We can't believe that Buddy Walk is less than a month away.
