WHAT SWIMMING LESSON SHOULD MY CHILD BE IN?

Children in levels 1-6 should be at least four years of age or be 3 foot 6 inches tall. Children younger than four years old could sign up for Parent-Tot with a parent to get them used to the water and instructor-based classes. Children one year old and younger may be too young for an outdoor aquatic activity with varied water and air temperature. Children under the age of 6 months should not be submerged because their inner ear is not fully developed, which could cause pain and a traumatic pool event. This could develop into a fear of swimming at a young age.

Goggles are allowed, but goggles that cover the nose are not allowed because part of swimming involves blowing bubbles through your nose.

Parent-Tot: Each child must be a minimum of six months old and be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You will learn holding and support positions with proper techniques.

Level One: No parents, no floats. Your child will learn to be comfortable in water and basic swimming skills.

Level Two: Needs to be able to move around in the water without help and not afraid or water

HIGHER LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Level Three: At the start of class, must be able to float on front for five seconds and back for 15 seconds without help. Must also be able to tread water for 15 seconds, swim using front crawl, and swim on back using any stroke for 25 feet. Most children will stay in level three for several sessions.

Level Four: At the start of class, must be able to tread water for 30 seconds in deep water, float on back for 30 seconds, swim half the length of the pool using front crawl with rotary breathing and elementary backstroke. This level involves lots of swimming, which normally means kids will repeat unless they are good endurance swimmers.

Level Five: Kids should already be good swimmers at the start of class. They can swim two laps in the pool (there and back) using front crawl with good rotary breathing, and elementary backstroke. They can also do one length of the pool swimming breaststroke, back crawl, butterfly, and side stroke. They can also tread water for two minutes.

OTHER RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES

400 STATE TRAIL

Named after the Chicago - Northwestern passenger train that ran between Chicago and the Twin Cities, the 22 miles of the 400 State Trail begins in Reedsburg and ends in Elroy. The trail winds along the Baraboo River through wetlands, sandstone bluffs, rolling croplands, and pastures. The trail itself is crushed and hard-packed limestone and is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, turtles, cranes, and eagles. Trail users always appreciate the convenience of having small communities scattered every few miles, allowing for rest breaks, food stops, and more. Like Reedsburg and Elroy, the communities of LaValle, Wonewoc, and Union Center each have their own unique charm, and a special feature of the 400 Trail is a 7-mile horse trail that runs along the trail between LaValle and Wonewoc. During the winter months, the trail also serves as a snowmobile trail, weather permitting.

A few years ago, the 400 Trail was recognized by National Geographic Adventure Magazine as being “arguably the State’s prettiest cycling route,” a distinction our beautiful trail has definitely earned.

People can walk the trail for free, but anyone 16 and older is required to have a trail pass to ride a bicycle. Trail passes can be purchased with cash or a check at the Reedsburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Passes are $5.00 per day or $25.00 for an annual pass, valid through December 31st. Passes are good on any Wisconsin DNR-owned trail. To learn more about the 400 Trail, please call the Reedsburg Area Chamber of Commerce at (608) 524-2850 or stop by the trailhead at 240 Railroad Street in Reedsburg. The Chamber is open seven days a week from May 15 - October 31st. Free parking is located behind the depot, and limited tent camping is also available in Reedsburg by calling (608) 524-2600. Campers should call a few days in advance to make a reservation.

OTHER RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES

BARABOO RIVER

As the Baraboo River winds through Sauk County, it offers abundant wildlife and a relaxing canoe outing with no rapids. Every village along the river owes its start to the water power that fueled the first sawmills, grist mills, and textile mills. Eventually, the 11 dams along the river provided the energy to power street lights and other electrical needs in the communities. Twenty years ago, the final dam on the river was removed to promote fish and wildlife restoration, improve water quality, and encourage conservation practices. Consequently, the Baraboo River is now the longest free-flowing river in the nation at approximately 120 miles, beginning in Kendall and ending near Portage, where it meets the Wisconsin River. It is the fourth largest tributary to the Wisconsin River.

Canoeing from LaValle to Reedsburg can take an entire afternoon if sightseeing and relaxing, but this 14-mile stretch can be navigated in less than three hours if conditions are good and with some serious paddling. Minor log jams may require users to portage around them. The 14 miles from Reedsburg to Rock Springs is a very different run that might be best enjoyed by experienced paddlers. This area is known for log maps and other challenges Portaging around them is likely a certainty. However, the entire river is known for its beautiful rock out-croppings and serves as a nesting area for eagles and other birds. Along the way, paddlers will pass under several 1890’s vintage railroad bridges while enjoying breathtaking and scenic beauty. A public canoe launch is located at 230 Granite Avenue in Reedsburg.

As for fishing, since the removal of the dams, the Baraboo River has almost recovered the populations of crappies, bluegills, northern and walleye pike that were abundant nearly 200 years ago. Smallmouth bass fishing is becoming common once again, and there have been occasional reports of sturgeon spawning along the shallows of the river in the springtime. Water sports of all kinds are abundant and provide great enjoyment on the Baraboo River!

The Reedsburg Parks & Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association, offers reduced ticket prices for area entertainment attractions. Sales begin May 1st and end September 1. Tickets may be purchased at Reedsburg City Hall, 134 S. Locust Street, on weekdays between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm.
