SHARING OUR STORIES TOGETHER AGAIN We are excited to welcome you back to Riverside Theatres and to the joy of live theatre. As your recently appointed Director, it gives me the greatest of pleasure to invite you to join us for a 2022 program full of excitement, challenge, curiosity, provocation and of course, entertainment! With a new year approaching and as the restrictions that have been necessary begin to lift, it is so wonderful to see our city coming alive again with a vibrance and enthusiasm we haven’t seen for some time. The new year is a time for rejoicing, restarting and reconnecting and we have so many great performance opportunities to choose from to share with your friends and loved ones over the summer and beyond. We kick off our reopening season with the return of Spiegelesque!, The daring, quirky, funny and sexy as hell love letter to old school cabaret. December rounds out with the two exciting world premieres of The Tap Effect, presented by Riverside and FORMDance, and JUST Live on Stage!, which brings the hilarious children’s books of Andy Griffiths to the stage for the first time. We then launch into our new year with an amazing 2022 Sydney Festival program across the City of Parramatta. Riverside Theatres, in association with Sydney Festival and Darlinghurst Theatre Company is proud to present the Australian Premiere of an all new production of A Chorus Line, directed and choreographed by powerhouse choreographer Amy Campbell. A Chorus Line is just one of a number of incredible productions at Riverside during Sydney Festival, including the provocative seven methods of killing kylie jenner, and two exciting new works from Javaad Alipoor presented by our own National Theatre of Parramatta. We finish our Sydney Festival 6

program with a truly delectable musical treat, when award-winning vocalist Katie Noonan performs her latest album The Sweetest Taboo live on stage. We then power into the first quarter with the return of smash-hit Mamma Mia! from our friends at Packemin Productions, and trio of works from Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta presenting Guards at the Taj, Orange Thrower and the return of 2019’s hit, White Pearl. And of course our old friends and crown-pleasers, The Wharf Revue, will return with their latest show, Can of Worms. These are just some of the exciting array of great shows ahead for our members and patrons in 2022. As always, we take our responsibility for the well being of staff, performers and audiences very seriously, and we will continue to monitor and take advice from NSW Health, City of Parramatta Council and performance industry groups to ensure we deliver the highest standards of COVID Safe practice at Riverside Theatres for you, our valued guests. It is an enormous privilege to take on the role as Director of Riverside Theatres, and to have the opportunity to present the best in Australian and touring theatre and to continue to build on the great work of your former Director, Robert Love. The team and I can’t wait to welcome back and see you in our foyer very soon. Until next time,

Craig McMaster Director | Riverside Theatres

Dive into a world of sweat, sacrifice and sensational choreography when music theatre’s singular sensation comes to Sydney Festival. Conceived and originally directed by Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line ripped down the curtain to reveal the struggles of Broadway performers to be seen, heard, recognised and respected. Featuring the music of Marvin Hamlisch (including Dance Ten; Looks Three, What I Did for Love and One) and based on interviews with real dancers, A Chorus Line shows what it means to put everything on the line. During a gruelling musical theatre audition, desperation will open the door to exploitation, and racism and sexism are rife. A Chorus Line opened on Broadway in 1975. Ten Tony® Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and countless international plaudits later, it remains one of the most successful musicals of all time. This dynamic production, twice postponed by COVID-19, features bold new choreography by director Amy Campbell (In the Heights (Helpmann Nominated for Best Choreography), HAIR, Funny Girl ) and musical direction by Andrew Worboys. The night is still. The air is hot and thick. From up on the roof, matching houses stretch as far as the eye can see. Welcome to the sunny suburb of Paradise. While her folks are back in Johannesburg, Zadie is holding down the family fort. This means keeping her little sis away from bush doofs, avoiding the cute boy next door, and smiling when her nice white neighbours try to touch her hair. All that changes when an unexpected visitor bursts back into Zadie’s life in the middle of the night, breaking the silence with loud music and even louder opinions. To make matters worse, someone’s been pelting the house with oranges. All of a sudden, Zadie’s got a big, sticky suburban mess on her hands. Orange Thrower is the award-winning debut play from Kirsty Marillier. A fresh twist on the Australian coming-of-age story, this play is a joyful comedy, a curious mystery, and a poignant love letter to South African women. Directed with zest by musician, performer and director Zindzi Okenyo, and starring a kick-arse ensemble playing larger-than-life characters. Winner of the Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award.

A nasty truth goes viral…

TICKETS: Members $58 Adults $64 A $4.60 transaction fee applies for non-members.

In Singapore, it’s just another day at the office of Clearday cosmetics. That is, until they discover that their new TV commercial has been leaked online. The video goes viral for all the wrong reasons. Someone is definitely going to get fired. Anchuli Felicia King’s play is a ruthlessly entertaining portrait of toxic corporate culture, casual racism and the complexity of pan-Asian relations. As the team at Clearday scrambles to contain the fallout, the open-plan, glass-door office proves to be a nest of secrets, lies and resentments. King is an exciting, original young voice and it’s a play rich with twists, dark comedy and brutal honesty.

With a pioneering spirit Mozart took a rare instrument and enthusiastically embraced it to write the first major concerto for the basset clarinet. The final instrumental work by the great composer, the Concerto for basset clarinet in A major was completed less than two months before his early death at age 35. The wistful Adagio is familiar to many from its use in numerous wellknown film scores such as Out of Africa and The King’s Speech. Rarely, though, is the concerto performed in concert on basset clarinet, the instrument which Mozart chose in his enduring adaptation of an earlier composition for basset horn. Leading Australian period clarinetist Craig Hill delivers this beguiling concerto in a program which also includes a pair of brooding works by the youngest and eldest of the Bach brothers and the Australian premiere of a symphony by Anton Zimmerman.

Shakespeare’s most immersive and haunting play tells of the murderous ascent to ‘greatness’ of a husband and wife who believe they can control time and destiny. A loving couple, suffering the loss of a child, are surrounded by the children of others – of the King, Macduff, Banquo. To what extent is their first criminal act an act of love in that terrible void, a sacrifice she makes for him and in return, he for her? Sport for Jove’s acclaimed Macbeth is an ecstatic vision of what love and ambition can do to people, of ghosts, shadows, and the terrors of the imagination.
