Paramount High School recognizes 2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Valedictorian Jasmine Gomez grew up in Compton and attended schools there until it was time to enter high school. Prompted by family tradition, she applied to an academy in Carson, California, but she was denied admission. Consequently, she enrolled in Paramount High School two weeks into the semester.
Jasmine regards her disappointment at being rejected as a driving force that led to her determination and academic success at Paramount. Overcoming her natural timidity, she continually challenged herself, immersed herself in her studies and built a strong foundation for dealing with challenges yet to come. Grateful for the support of both her immediate family and her Pirate family, she enters the future committed to building on her success while she continues striving to break stereotypes.
In accepting the honor of being valedictorian, Jasmine expressed her gratitude to the many talented, extraordinary Paramount students with whom she worked and learned. She strongly believes that all her classmates are capable of success, regardless of academic rank. She advises everyone to follow the simple advice that her mother gave her: “Seguir adelante.”

Salutatorian Jaime Perez never expected to become salutatorian back when he was a freshman; his goal was to get a high-enough GPA so that he could remain competitive for admission to college.
Jaime is honored to have been part of such a diverse and unique community at Paramount High School that has inspired him to reach new heights in his academic career as he heads off for college.
A science fiction fan, Jaime is particularly fond of the words of Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back: “Do—or do not! There is no try!” He learned the truth of that lesson during his four years of high school while watching his favorite science fiction heroes, wizards, athletes—and his fellow Paramount students—strive to keep doing better. He did the same himself, and he has every intention of maintaining his focus on doing throughout the rest of his life.
Jaime acknowledges that he changed a great deal during high school, and he saw similar changes in his classmates. As he and his peers continue to change and grow, he offers them his best wishes for the future along with the Vulcan salute from Star Trek and the words of Leonard Nimoy (as Spock): “Live long and prosper.”

Support for students with disabilities after high school
Each student with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will have support and resources available when he or she graduates or ages-out of programs from the Paramount Unified School District. (An IEP defines individualized objectives for a student who has been determined to have a disability or requires specialized accommodation. Tailored to an individual student’s needs, an IEP describes how a particular student learns, how the student best demonstrates that learning and what teachers and service providers can do to help the student learn more effectively.)
After leaving the district, an individual with a disability is eligible to receive support through a regional center or the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR). Regional centers provide clients with day programs, in-home support, or both. The DOR helps individuals with disabilities attend college and vocational training programs or obtain employment. All students in PUSD with an IEP are eligible to be a client of either a regional center or the DOR, and Paramount Unified is committed to helping families connect with these important resources.
The two regional centers that support students and families in Paramount are South Central Los Angeles Regional Center and Harbor Regional Center. In January, South Central Los Angeles Regional Center made a presentation to students and parents at the Paramount Adult School to describe current services and explain how to become a new client. All parents left with the assurance that there is continued support for students after leaving the district.
Any Paramount student with a disability not eligible for services at a regional center is eligible for assistance from the DOR. DOR counselors visit high school campuses throughout the district to meet with 11th-graders and 12th-graders. At these meetings, DOR shares what services are available and how to access those services. PUSD graduates are currently attending college and vocational training programs or working full time with the support of the DOR.
PUSD will continue to connect families with agencies and community partners to ensure that all students have the opportunity to achieve college and career goals.
Apoyo para estudiantes con discapacidades después de la preparatoria

Dear Paramount Unified School District Families and Friends,
On June 13, nearly 1,000 young men and women received their high school diplomas during a commencement ceremony and moved confidently into the next phase of their lives. As we celebrate our graduates, let’s also celebrate the role that each of us has played in paving the way for their success. From our dedicated parents, staff and educators, we have all collaborated to create brighter futures for our children.
We have finished another strong year with intensive programs that inspire students and their families. In April, we distributed College Readiness Guides (CRG) to help families support their child’s pursuit of college. The guide included information on graduation requirements as well as the admissions process. It’s yet another way that we are staying connected to the community in support of students.
On that note, we are encouraging parents to enroll in ParentVUE and Schoology, online Parent Portals that allow parents to remain in tune with their child’s education. The portals allow them to monitor critical school information and have a direct line of communication with teachers. Let’s continue to be engaged in the classroom progress of students.
I also want to give special thanks to one of our valuable partners, Vision To Learn, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education. Alondra Middle School students received free eyeglasses from VTL on May 28. Seeing smiles on the faces of children who tried on their new glasses was so rewarding, and motivation to continue pursuing new tools to help students reach success.

PHS honors two Athletes of the Year • PHS honra a dos atletas del año
We honored our two Athletes of the Year, DeAnte Livingston and Elizabeth Gataivasa Saleapaga, on May 28 at Paramount High School.
DeAnte Livingston has been a starter for the Paramount varsity football team for the past three years. As a junior, he was named team captain and defensive player of the year. He also made First Team: All San Gabriel Valley League and First Team: All CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) in Division 5. He was the leading tackler in the region with 135 tackles. His senior year, DeAnte was again named team captain and selected for First Team: All San Gabriel Valley League, and he received our Kenneth Teeples Scholar-Athlete Award.
DeAnte has also had great success in the classroom, earning a 3.4 GPA while taking demanding classes. His hard work both on the field and in class inspired our younger players and earned DeAnte an athletic scholarship at Bethel College in Kansas in the fall.
Elizabeth Gataivasa Saleapaga is a four-year varsity wrestler. She took third place in the Moore League wrestling finals her freshman year, and in her sophomore year, our team awarded her its “most improved” award. By her junior year, she had become the San Gabriel Valley League Champion. Elizabeth took third in Regionals, sixth in CIF, and became a state qualifier.
This year Elizabeth continued to dominate on the mat. She won first place at the San Dimas All County Wrestling Tournaments, second in the Corona Classic and captured her second San Gabriel Valley League championship. Elizabeth then became Regional Champion and fifth in CIF, and she made it to the second day of competition at the state championships, just missing the medal round. Voted the team MVP, she became the first at Paramount High School to earn a college wrestling scholarship. She will continue her wrestling career at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota.
The athletic staff and Pirate community could not be prouder of these two athletes.
OTHER PIRATE NEWS
Doubles tennis players Froy Garcia and Andrew Lujano, competed in CIF matches on May 17, finishing third in the league behind Warren and Downey. Because of rain delays and engagement conflicts involving the first- and second-place teams, Froy and Andrew ended up representing the San Gabriel Valley League in competition in Carpenteria—but they lost to the team from Maranatha. However, this was the first time a Paramount tennis team had competed in postseason play in the last decade. Now that they’ve had a taste of postseason competition, Froy and Andrew are eager to step up their game and return next year.
Boys’ volleyball—Our team reached the second round of CIF play after achieving an impressive overall record of 26-11 and a league record of 7-3. Many of our players are headed to colleges both to continue their educations and play volleyball. Miguel Rivera is going to the University of California, Irvine; Andrew Sais and Tomas Tafolla will play at Long Beach City College; Angel Madrigal will attend California State University Long Beach; and Edgar Camberos will continue his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Jason Robles will serve our country in the U.S. Army. Coach Charles Park said: “I wish the boys the best of luck in the future and thank them for such an amazing season! Once a Pirate, always a Pirate!”
Track and field—Our team did an outstanding job this season, producing the following individual San Gabriel Valley League champions who went on to compete at CIF: Girls—Alejandra Ayala (sophomore): 800m,1600m and 3200m; and Ashley Miller (junior): 100m and 200m. Boys— Drew Pickett (senior): 110m high hurdles and 300m low hurdles; Anthony Williams (junior): 200m and 400m; Willie Cleveland (junior): 100m; Christian Hernandez (senior): 800m; LaSalle Jackson (senior): triple jump; and Nathaniel Esmana (senior): long jump. Boys’ 4x100 relay (42.94)—Drew Pickett, Willie Cleveland, Ahmad Parker (junior) and Anthony Williams. Boys’ 4x400 relay (3:30.00)—Donja Wilson (senior), Drew Pickett, Christian Hernandez and Anthony Williams. Sophomore Alejandra Ayala had a great year, breaking school records in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. Ashley Miller also did well, coming close to school records in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Both ladies are expected to return next year for another great season.
Drew Pickett went all the way to CIF Masters Meet and fell only one place short of qualifying for the state meet. He lost by less than .10 of a second in an exciting photo finish, coming in seventh—but he needed to be sixth or better.
Triple jumper LaSalle Jackson injured his knee the day before state track and field competition began.
Swimming—The swim season ended April 18. Our team is very grateful to Downey High School for the use of their pool and facilities for meets, practices and San Gabriel League finals this season while the city of Paramount was working to repair the Paramount pool.
Baseball—Our team ended up tied for third place with a 6-4 league performance and an overall 12-16-2 record. The Pirates are now ready for summer league play.
Girls’ softball—With no seniors on the team, the ladies ended their season in high spirits and are working on rebuilding our program for next year.
Fall sports—Football, boys’ water polo, girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball and cross-country are all gearing up for next season.

Debido a los retrasos por la lluvia y los conflictos de participación en los equipos de primero y segundo lugar, Froy y Andrew terminaron representando a la Liga del Valle de San Gabriel en la competencia en Carpenteria, pero perdieron ante el equipo de Maranatha. Sin embargo, esta vez fue la primera en que un equipo de tenis de Paramount compitió en la postemporada en la última década. Ahora que han probado la competencia de postemporada, Froy y Andrew están ansiosos por mejorar su juego y regresar el próximo año.
Voleibol de los chicos Nuestro equipo llegó a la segunda ronda de juego CIF después de lograr un impresionante récord general de 26-11 y un récord de liga de 7-3. Muchos de nuestros jugadores se dirigen a las universidades para continuar su educación y jugar voleibol. Miguel Rivera va a ir a la Universidad de California, Irvine; Andrew Sais y Tomas Tafolla jugarán en el Colegio de Long Beach; Ángel Madrigal asistirá a la Universidad Estatal de California en Long Beach; y Edgar Camberos continuará su educación en la Universidad Aeronáutica Embry-Riddle. Jason Robles servirá a nuestro país en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos. El entrenador Charles Park dijo: “¡Les deseo a los chicos la mejor de la suerte en el futuro y les agradezco por una temporada tan increíble! ¡Una vez Pirata, siempre Pirata!”

Chicos-Drew Pickett (12º grado): 110 m de obstáculos altos y 300 m de obstáculos bajos; Anthony Williams (11º grado): 200 my 400 m; Willie Cleveland (11º grado): 100 m; Christian Hernandez (12º grado): 800m; LaSalle Jackson (12º grado): triple salto; y Nathaniel Esmana (12º grado): salto de longitud. Relevo 4x100 de los chicos (42.94): Drew Pickett, Willie Cleveland, Ahmad Parker (11º grado) y Anthony Williams. Relevo 4x400 de chicos (3: 30.00) —Donja Wilson (12º grado), Drew Pickett, Christian Hernandez y Anthony Williams.
La estudiante de 10º grado Alejandra Ayala tuvo un gran año, rompiendo récords escolares en los 800, 1600 y 3200 metros. Ashley Miller también lo hizo bien, acercándose a los registros escolares en los 100, 200 y 400 metros. Se espera que ambas chicas regresen el próximo año para otra gran temporada.
Drew Pickett fue hasta la CIF Masters Meet y cayó a un sólo un lugar corto de calificar para la reunión estatal. Perdió por menos de .10 de segundo en un emocionante final fotográfico, llegando en séptimo lugar, pero necesitaba ser sexto o mejor.
El saltador triple LaSalle Jackson se lesionó la rodilla el día antes de que comenzara la competencia estatal de atletismo.
Natación La temporada de natación terminó el 18 de abril. Nuestro equipo está muy agradecido con la Preparatoria Downey por el uso de su piscina e instalaciones para las competencias, prácticas y finales de la Liga de San Gabriel esta temporada mientras la ciudad de Paramount estaba trabajando para reparar la piscina de Paramount.
Béisbol Nuestro equipo terminó empatado en el tercer lugar con un rendimiento de liga de 6-4 y un récord general de 12-16-2. Los Piratas están listos para jugar la liga de verano.
Softbol de las chicas Sin ninguna chica del 12º grado, las chicas terminaron su temporada con gran ánimo y están trabajando en la reconstrucción de nuestro programa para el próximo año.
Deportes de otoño El fútbol, el polo acuático de los chicos, el tenis de las chicas, el voleibol de las chicas y campo y travesía se están preparando para la próxima temporada.
