Southeast Area Social Services Funding Authority (SASSFA) has re-located to the Paramount Firehouse Activity Center at 15538 Colorado Avenue.

Formed in 2005, the Paramount branch of SASSFA provides free employment, training, and business services to low-income and out of work residents of Paramount. The services are funded through the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and administered by the County of Los Angeles.

SASSFA provides job seekers with a full computer lab, internet access, resume building skills, tutorials, community resources, faxes, phones, copiers, workshops, posted job leads and much more. In addition to its adult services, SASSFA also offers free services to Paramount youth ages 16-21. These include tutoring, college preparation, paid work experience, internet and computer lab, and job readiness and leadership workshops.

Businesses can also benefit by using SASSFA for recruiting, screening and hiring of employees.

Again, all of SASSFA’s services are free to the public, and anyone looking for a job or needing to upgrade their employment skills through training can do so at the Center.

“We are thrilled to move our business into the Paramount Firehouse Activity Center,” said Jennifer Capp, Paramount SASSFA spokesperson. “The new location will provide us with ample room and better resources to help more people in Paramount.”

For more information, call (562) 633-9511 or visit www.sassfa.org.

Seniors Thanksgiving Dinner This Month

Be sure and mark Thursday, November 15 on your calendar as our Seniors Thanksgiving Dinner. The annual celebration honors the elders of our community with a free day of entertainment, dancing, raffle prizes and a fine meal with all the trimmings. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Paramount Park gym. Business leaders from the Paramount Rotary Club and students from Paramount High School’s Corsairs will be serving the meals and local sponsors will be on hand with information about services they offer. Musical entertainment will be provided by the James Tobin Band.

We usually get upwards of 1,000 guests, and it’s always a great time. Hope to see you there.

9th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting

I hope you’ll also come and enjoy the City’s 9th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday, November 28, at 6:00 p.m.

The heartwarming and colorful event will take place at the Pond on the corner of Jackson St. and Paramount Blvd. It will feature musical entertainment, refreshments and a warm and wonderful time for all.

For more information, call (562) 220-2121.

Fun Fishing

I would like to express a word of thanks to all the kids and parents who turned out for a day of fun at the City’s yearly Huck Finn Fishing Derby at Spane Park. Special thanks also go to members of the Paramount Elks who helped out, as usual, with removing the

fish from the hooks and cooking hot dogs for the big crowd.

It was a healthy turnout and lots of fun for all involved.

Recycling Used Motor Oil

If you change the motor oil in your vehicle, you cannot dispose of it in the trash or down the drain. It must be recycled. But there are two easy ways to get rid of the stuff in Paramount.

You can take the used oil and used filters to Kragen Auto Parts at 15725 Downey Ave., phone (562) 272-1433. (It is recommended that you call before taking the oil in.) Or you can arrange for them to be picked up at home by calling Curbside, Inc. at 1-800-HHW-PKUP.

A few things to keep in mind: do not mix oil with bleach, paint, solvents or automotive fluids; contaminated oil will not be accepted; carry oil in clean, non-breakable, non-metal containers; maximum container size accepted is five gallons; maximum drop-off amount per day is 20 gallons.

For more information on recycling used oil or for other drop off locations, please call 1-888-CLEAN-LA.

New Traffic Signal

The left turn signal on north/southbound Downey Avenue at Flower Street is now operational. This intersection had the highest number of broad-side collisions in the city. Adding the left turn signal should greatly reduce this problem.

Water Conservation

As you are probably aware, California is suffering through a period of drought, with dry weather conditions and some imported water supplies from the north expected to be curtailed. While the City’s water department has no plans to impose conservation measures on users, it’s always a good idea to be mindful of saving water when you can.

Here are a few tips:

• When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

• Soak your pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.

• Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full and you could save 1,000 gallons a month.

• Time your shower to keep it under five

minutes. You'll save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

• Install a low-flow showerhead. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and can save your family more than 500 gallons a week.

• When you are washing your hands, don't let the water run while you lather.

• Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and save four gallons a minute. That's 200 gallons a week for a family of four.

• Turn off the water while you shave and you can save more than 100 gallons a week.

• Install low-volume toilets.

• Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway or sidewalk and save 80 gallons of water every time.

• Minimize evaporation by watering during the early morning hours, when temperatures are cooler and winds are lighter.

• Only water your lawn when needed. You can tell this by simply walking across your lawn. If you leave footprints, it's time to water.

• Check your water meter and bill to track your water usage.

• Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. Longer grass shades root systems and holds soil moisture better than a closely clipped lawn.

• Don't use running water to thaw food.

• Bathe your pets outdoors in an area in need of water.

• Check your sprinkler system frequently and adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.

You can’t change the past but you can ruin the present by worrying over the future.
Mayor, Peggy Lemons

Holiday Parties – Silent Days and Nights

As we head into the holiday season, let’s all remember that parties, while of course enjoyable and traditional, can sometimes get out of hand and bother neighbors. In Paramount, if a call for disturbing the peace comes into the Sheriff’s Station, deputies will go to the location and issue a first-warning notice. If a return visit is made, the property owner can be liable for a fine.

If there are such disturbances coming from the same location over an extended period of time, deputies will focus on solving the problem with those causing it. Deputies, also, do not divulge the identity of any residents making complaint calls.

For more information, call the Paramount Sheriff’s Station at (562) 220-2002.

Lakewood Station Phone Number

The recently renovated Lakewood Sheriff’s Station has changed its phone numbers, including the main line. That new number is (562) 623-3500, so mark it on your personal phone number list. The old number, (562) 866-9061, is still in effect for awhile longer, but you should change over to the new number.

Safe Shopping

As you begin your holiday gift buying excursions, here are a few easy, safety-related tips to keep in mind.

• Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.

Awards Night

• Always park in a well lighted area.

• Never leave packages, bags, cell phones, purses or other valuable items in plain sight in your vehicle. Place these items in your trunk, where they cannot be seen from outside your car.

• Carry small amounts of cash. Your front pocket is ideal for carrying cash.

• Never leave children in the car unattended.

• If possible, try to shop in pairs. Robbers often focus on, and target, solo shoppers.

• Never buy items from someone who approaches you in a parking lot. Often these items are stolen.

Detective Thomas “Bo” Dobis, who has served the Paramount community for 16 years in a variety of important Public Safety positions, was recently promoted and has left the City. The City Council honored him at its October 2 meeting. From left: Councilmember Tom Hansen, Councilmember Diane J. Martinez, Sheriff’s Lt. Rod Armalin, Marilyn Dobis, Det. Dobis, Mayor Peggy Lemons, Vice Mayor Gene Daniels and Councilmember Daryl Hofmeyer.
The Council also gave special recognition to a group of City Recreation staff members who formed the “Paramount Superstars” dance team to perform at the 50th Anniversary Community Fair.
The Paramount Superstars were led and choreographed by local dance teacher Kimberly Gonzalez with only four weeks of rehearsal. As a thank you for her volunteered time, the City made a donation to her dance studio of $500. From left: From left: Councilmember Tom Hansen, Councilmember Diane J. School Readiness Program Prepares Youngsters For Educational Experiences

The Paramount Education Partnership (PEP) is pleased to announce that its School Readiness Program is being offered at the Paramount Petroleum Learning Resource Center and the Emmanuel Computer Lab in partnership with Paramount Care Foundation.

The School Readiness Program offers children in preschool and kindergarten the opportunity to prepare for future educational experiences. The goal of the program is to assist students, as well as guide parents through their child’s first educational encounters by familiarizing them with the basics of educational curriculum. This involves the use of Open Court programming and skill-binding activities. The objective is to form a bridge between parents and educators to ensure educational success for all students.

PEP, in conjunction with the Paramount Care Foundation, offered the School Readiness Program twice last year at the Virginia Ave. Computer Lab. Twenty-four families participated. Seeing that the program was a success, it was decided to offer it at the Paramount Petroleum Learning Resource Center at

Spane Park, also.

During the first week of this latest program offering, 10 families enrolled. After great reviews from parents and students, plus ongoing promotion, the number jumped to 18 families by the third week, which exceeded PEP’s goal by three. If the program continues to be a hit among parents and children, it will further expand beyond the current Mondays and Wednesdays to also take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Parents are encouraged to enroll their children in the program, which is free of cost. The School Readiness Program is being offered at Virginia Ave. Computer Lab, 15942 Virginia Avenue, Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. At Paramount Petroleum Learning Resource Center, located at Spane Park, 14400 Gundry Avenue in Paramount, it is held on Monday and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Please contact Cathleen Marcade and/or Rosa Mendez at (562) 817-0820 for more information.

President Leonard Crespo presents a check for nearly $700 to Richard Hollingsworth, Program Administrator for the Paramount Education Partnership program better know as PEP. The money was raised though the Paramount Chamber Committee on Education’s toner cartridge recycling program. The Chamber collects used toner and ink cartridges and used cell phones for the PEP program and recycles them for cash. The funds are used PEP’s scholarship program which provides college or technical training scholarships for Paramount Unified students.

Are You An Expert? How to Prevent Dirty Looking Grout

Do you find your self hiding your beautiful floors with area rugs

because of dirty grout lines? Here’s a quick fix for the problem. Apply some grout colorant directly to your grout lines to enhance the beauty of your floors, and then seal the grout. Depending on your floor finish the sealer can be applied to the tile as well as the grout. For example a natural stone will always be sealed with a natural stone enhancer and sealer. Other types of material could be damaged by sealer and would need to be applied only to the grout lines.

What you need:

teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1 cup brown sugar, packed ½ cup raisins

1 egg, beaten

1 ½ cups canned pumpkin ½ cup chocolate chips

How to fix:

1) Mix dry ingredients with the raisins

2) In a separate bowl, mix the egg and pumpkin. Stir into dry ingredients.

3) Spread the thick batter in a 9 x 12 inch greased baking dish

4) Sprinkle chocolate chips on top

5) Bake at 350o degrees for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cut into squares. Makes 24 squares. (91 calories and 1 gram fat per serving.)

Paramount Rotary Serves Families at the Fiesta

A recent participant at the Paramount Chamber Fiesta the Paramount Rotarians, and Paramount High School’s Rotary Interact student’s, provided emergency records services to children and their families. The Rotarians finger printed, weighed, measured and photographed 350 local children at no charge to create individual printed records which were then given to parents. These kinds of records are very valuable to the police in the event of a child’s disappearance.

The Rotary Club is an organization of local business and professional people who provide humanitarian assistance to Paramount residents. The Club meets at noon every Tuesday at Progress Park for fellowship, lunch and informational programs. Please feel free to join them as a guest for lunch, visitors are always welcome. Dusk to Dawn Urgent Care – Quality Medical Service For Paramount

In Los Angeles County, many hospitals have been closing their emergency rooms. This fact has greatly impacted those ERs that remain open, most importantly in how long it takes a patient to see a doctor. Wait times can average anywhere from five to 12 hours.

But in Paramount, there is a medical urgent care facility that makes an amazing pledge.

Dusk to Dawn Urgent Care guarantees that you will be seen by the attending physician within 45 minutes.

“Our mission is to provide access to quality care for Paramount and the surrounding area without the wait you’ll encounter at impacted emergency rooms,” said Dr. Eugene Allen, founder and CEO. In addition to emergency care, Dusk to Dawn has the added benefit of being an ongoing family practice, so you can have the comfort and familiarity of seeing the same doctor in both acute emergency and standard nonemergency settings.

Dusk to Dawn is unique. Often, urgent care facilities are staffed by physician assistants or family practitioners. But Dr. Allen is trained as an ER doctor, and has worked in a number of ERs in the area. “When the emergency room at Suburban Medical Center closed, we stepped

in to fill the void,” Dr. Allen noted. “We provide the community with the same service.”

Dusk to Dawn can handle all emergencies. “We attend to any issue, and either send the patient home or stabilize their condition before getting them to a hospital designated by their insurance plan,” Dr. Allen explained. “Our goal is to provide fast, efficient and effective care.” This same spirit applies to the family practice, as well, which accepts most insurance plans. Cash patients can make a first visit for only $25 with proof of having gone to the facility’s website (www.dusktodawnurgentcare.com).

“Once patients come by and get to know us, they come back. We provide total care, for emergencies and family practice, and have both male and female doctors on staff. We have created an inviting environment, everything to make a patient feel comfortable. You walk in and it doesn’t feel like it’s a business. It’s restful, you’re not waiting like a number on a list.”

Dusk to Dawn opened in 2003, and has expanded to include two offices in the medical building adjacent to Suburban. There are six exam rooms and a four-member staff. One of the two offices is devoted to workers’ compensation for local businesses. An employee

who is injured on the job or has medical issues that need attending will be examined and given appropriate treatment. Then the business owner is consulted on the best way to manage the case. “The benefit of developing a relationship with us is that we’re in the community,” Dr. Allen said. “And we provide access to the same doctor, all the time, for any

and all medical needs.

“We’re here to serve Paramount,” Dr. Allen added. “I love what I do, and I want everyone in Paramount to know that we are here for them.”

Dusk to Dawn Urgent Care is located at 16415 Colorado Ave., Suite 104; phone, (562) 808-2273. Transportation is available, and Spanish is spoken.

Chamber and City officials join Dr. Allen for the grand opening of Dusk to Dawn Urgent and Industrial Care. Dusk to Dawn may be found at 16415 S. Colorado Ave. Ste. #104.

$20,000 REWARD

VERNON SECURITY IS OFFERING A $20,000 REWARD

FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST AND CONVICTION OF THE PERSON OR PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF VERNON SECURITY OFFICER ON THE PARAMOUNT HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS

MONDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 22, 2007

An unarmed Vernon Security Officer was viciously beaten and left for dead by two or more individuals who were breaking into vending machines on the Paramount High School campus sometime during the early morning hours of Monday, October 22, 2007.

The security officer remains in a coma at a local hospital where he is being treated for his massive brain and facial injuries, a collapsed lung and broken ribs.

The individuals responsible for this senseless crime were on the Paramount High School campus between 2 am and 4 am. They were using a blowtorch to cut into the vending machines. They also used a heavy-duty bolt cutter to cut their way through chain link fencing and gate locks on the south side of the campus near the railroad right-of-way.

Anyone seeing any suspicious vehicles or persons on Downey Ave. between Rosecrans Blvd. and Somerset Blvd., on Monday morning between 2 am and 4 am, or who know of anyone with an unusually large amount of loose coins should contact Det. Smith at Paramount Sheriffs at 562-220-2002.
