Each year we see the changing of the guard at the Paramount Chamber of Commerce. This year they installed Jon Tanklage of Marukan Vinegar USA as President. This is the second time he will serve as Chamber President and Jon expressed his excitement to serve this time around. With some past experience, he looks forward to going the extra mile and to see new and great things emerge. He is already making plans to see innovative and up to date changes in what the Chamber has to offer the City of Paramount. Special thanks were made the the Major Sposnor Weber Metals and Otto Fuchs Company and to SoCal Edison for sponsoring the centerpieces.

As Mayor Martinez and other government officials paid honor to the Outgoing President, Brenda Olmos, they recogonized the great strides that Brenda and AppleCare Medical Management – a Part of OptumCare accomplished this last year. Most notably

are the Healthy Paramount campaigns that continue with monthly events and incentives for a healthy and active lifestyle. Also, was the First Women in Business & Leadership Luncheon this last spring that plans to become an annual event.

The Chamber made some very special awards to some businesses, clubs and individuals that made distinct contributions to the community:

Ambassador of the Year

Awarded to Rudy Sandoval (Real Estate Homes & Investments) for his volunteering and strong efforts to meet the new business in Paramount and new members of the Parmount Chamber of Commerce.

Award of Excellence

Awarded to the Paramount Friends of the Library for their never-ending efforts to the community in support of the local library branch and providing events that enrich the community. One of the most important is the Summer

Mayor’s Award

Mayor Martinez presented a special award to Casa Adelita and Jesus Perez for the family atmosphere in his restaurant and for their strong community presence and outreaches at Christmas time. Casa Adelita celebrates the Posada by giving blankets out to the children each year.

President’s Award

Outgoing President Brenda Olmos presented Northgate Gonzalez Markets a special award for many contributions they make to Paramount. Besides creating a spectacular shopping and dining environment inside their store they bring that outside the store with the enhance shopping area at Town Center West. They also are involved in the Paramount Education Partnership and contribute to several organizations

that benefit the residents.

The Paramount Chamber of Commerce is proud of its businesses, service clubs and residents for all that they do to make Paramount a wonderful place to live and work.

Mayor’s Award to Casa Adelita

At the Paramount Chamber of Commerce’s Installation and Awards Luncheon in June, it was my pleasure to present the annual Mayor’s Award for Business of the Year to Jesus Perez of Casa Adelita.

This small regional chain of familyowned restaurants opened its largest location in Paramount in 2004. Since then, it has grown to become one of the most recognizable and successful dining establishments in the City.

Casa Adelita is known for its family entertainment and for being family-friendly with a children’s playground. Mr. Perez has made it a point to connect with the community and be a good neighbor to the surrounding residential areas.

Since musical entertainment is a regular

feature at Casa Adelita, Mr. Perez went over and above the measures set by the City to make sure that noise is not a problem for the neighborhood.

In addition, Jesus has committed great resources to making high-quality façade improvements to his building, even importing the exterior stonework from Jalisco, Mexico.

He has created one of the most distinctive restaurants in our central business district and reinforced the City’s efforts at making the Paramount landscape beautiful.

In a yearly event that many people in the community cherish, Casa Adelita holds a Posadas Navideñas. This recalls the events leading up to the Nativity of Jesus and is a centerpiece of Mexican Christmas traditions. During this annual celebration Mr. Perez gives away free blankets.

For all of these reasons, I gladly named Jesus Perez and Casa Adelita as this year’s Business of the Year in Paramount.

for a second.

When compared to the first quarter of 2017, property crimes in Paramount during the same period in 2018 declined a healthy 21%, with burglaries down a dramatic 31%. Still, no crime level is ever acceptable to the City.

There are plenty of facts, figures, and details about distracted driving, but the California Office of Traffic Safety wants you to know the plain and simple ones:

• 80 percent of vehicle crashes involve some sort of driver inattention.

To help Paramount residents make their homes more secure, the City has started a Home Security Rebate Pilot Program for those purchasing a security product or service designed to deter property crimes.

• Up to 6,000 people nationwide are killed in crashes where driver distractions are involved.

• Talking on a cell phone or texting is the number one source of driver distractions.

Paramount residents can receive up to $200 for such a purchase of their choice. Already, 26 residents have received rebates.

• Texting takes your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds, long enough to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph. Most crashes happen with less than three seconds reaction time.

To be eligible for a rebate, a resident must have purchased a new security product or become a new subscriber to a security service.

• The act of talking on a cell phone, even hands free, can give you “inattention blindness,” where your brain isn’t seeing what’s right in front of you. You aren’t even aware that you are driving impaired. If you think you can handle both driving and talking on a cell phone or texting, you are kidding yourself and putting us all at risk.

These products and services can include, for instance, a home alarm system, security camera system, doorbell camera, exterior flood lights with camera, motion sensor lights with camera, etc.

Online applications must be submitted within 60 days of the purchase date. The program is limited to one rebate per household and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds are limited so residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Again, this is a pilot program.

Distracted driving is anything that takes your eyes or mind off the road or your hands off the steering wheel – especially texting and cell phone use, whether hands-free or handheld. Who’s doing it? Most of us. It has been estimated that, at any one time, more than 10 percent of drivers are using a mobile device.

To access the location to fill out an application, go to paramountcity.com and find a story on the homepage with a link.

And hurry, since funds are limited for this program!

A ticket for $159 for texting or talking on a cell phone is a major distraction to your wallet.

What can you do? Most important, obey the law. It’s there for a reason. Also, do your best to eliminate distractions:

• Never text and drive.

• Turn off your phone when you get behind the wheel.

For more information, or if you do not have access to a computer, please contact Anthony Martinez of the City of Paramount’s Public Safety Department at (562) 220-2002 or email amartinez@paramountcity.com.

• Don’t text or call someone when you know they are likely to be driving.

Water-Safety Tips For Summertime Swimming

• Make a pact with your family, spouse, and caregivers never to use the phone with kids in the car.

• No eating or drinking while driving.

Here are some ideas supplied by the Los Angeles County Fire Department for being safe in the water.

• Don’t program your GPS, MP3 player, or other devices while driving.

• Pull over and stop to read maps.

• Never take your eyes off a child when he or she is in or near a body of water, even

• No grooming.

• No reading.

• If something falls to the floor, pull over before trying to reach it.

• Don’t rely solely on barriers, such as fences or walls, near a pool or spa. There is no substitute for constant supervision.

Project LEAD Sending Positive Message to Paramount Fifth Graders

• Keep toys, tricycles, and other children’s playthings out of the water and away from the pool or spa.

• Don’t consider your children to be “drown-proof” because you enrolled them in swimming or “water-proofing” classes.

• Don’t rely on inflatable devices to keep your child afloat. These are not substitutes for adult supervision.

Paramount has its own dedicated District Attorney – Kelly Tatman – who works out of the Sheriff’s Station. Her duties include making sure that criminal investigations and prosecutions in town receive full attention and don’t fall through the cracks at the larger County D.A.’s Office.

• Make sure your pool or spa has a fence, wall, or safety cover that guards against unsupervised access, particularly by young children.

Tatman has been visiting a class of 36 students at Jefferson School as part of Project LEAD. The program, which goes into the classroom once a week for 20 weeks during the school year, uses volunteers like Tatman from the D.A.’s Office to teach fifth-graders about the law and help them recognize the social and legal consequences of criminal behavior.

• Make sure doors leading to the pool or spa area are self-closing and self-latching, or are equipped with exit alarms and are never propped open.

• Always drain standing (surface) water from the pool cover. Remember that even a few inches of water can be hazardous, especially to young children.

• Install a phone, or keep a cordless phone, in the pool or spa area.

Sadly, too many young people first become acquainted with the justice system as delinquents. Project LEAD is designed to avoid that scenario.

If A Child Or Adult Is In Trouble In A Pool

• Don’t panic; yell for help.

• Get the child/adult out of the pool immediately.

• Call 911 immediately for emergency medical services.

The class from Jefferson recently went on a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance. (They will also go to a local courthouse). In addition, Project LEAD’s curriculum includes speakers connected to the criminal justice system and a mock trial involving either drug selling or gun possession on campus. Students are assigned roles and argue a criminal case to a jury consisting of other students. Teachers and parents attend, too.

• If you’re trained, begin CPR if necessary.

• If you’re not trained in CPR, follow telephone instructions from the Fire Department until they arrive to assist you.

At the end of the program, the kids will participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate of completion from the D.A.’s Office at a meeting of the Paramount Public Safety Commission.

Summer Vacation Home Checks

Summer Vacation Home Checks

Now that summer is here, if you are taking a vacation remember that Paramount residents can contact the Sheriff’s Station about having Volunteers on Patrol keep an eye on their home or property while gone. Call (562) 220-2002 to ask about vacation home checks.

With summertime approaching, remember that if you’re going out of town for an extended period of time, you can schedule a home check.

Paramount Chamber Donates to PHS Girls Empowerment Program

The Paramount Chamber of Commerce has donated a check for $500 to the Paramount High School Girls Empowerment Program. The donation comes from proceeds from the Women in Business & Leadership Luncheon, a recent Chamber event held at Progress Park. Brenda Olmos, President of the Chamber, was on hand with Chamber Executive Director Kyle Miller to deliver the check to Principal Mike Ono, Counselors Lourdes Talamantes and Patty Jacobo, and student program participant Anita Okogbue. President Olmos was very happy

that the Chamber could connect with this program. “We wanted to help a community group in Paramount, so when we learned about this girl’s empowerment program at the high school we knew it was the perfect fit”. In addition to the donation, the Chamber provided tickets for the luncheon to the students participating in the program. Special thanks to Lourdes Talamantes, the coordinator of the program, for being so helpful and making it easy for the Chamber to connect with such a worthy program.

Teachers of the Year

Every campus in the Paramount Unified School District names a Teacher of the Year. At the Paramount City Council meeting on May 1, as part of Education Month, the Council and representatives from PUSD recognized these outstanding educators.

Gates Scholars Honored

The Gates Millennium Scholarships are given to only 300 high school seniors in the country each year. Two of those students in 2018 were Karla Navarro and Armando Torres of Paramount High School. They were recognized at the May 1 City Council meeting as part of Education Month. Karla and Armando have both been on the City’s Youth Commission for two years. He will be attending Stanford and she will be going to UCLA. Since the Gates Scholarships began in 1999, Paramount High has produced 23 recipients. Boulevard of Scholars

In the spirit of the Boulevard of Heroes that honors residents who are serving in the military, Paramount has now created a Boulevard of Scholars to recognize another group of the City’s finest. Banners featuring each year’s top 25 collegebound seniors from Paramount High School, based on their GPAs, will be featured on Alondra between Lakewood Blvd. and Paramount Blvd. The students in the inaugural group were recognized at the May 15 City Council meeting by the Council and representatives of the Paramount Unified School District, and were presented with a miniature version of their banners as mementoes.

Top-Performing Students Recognized at Heritage Festival

At the recent Heritage Festival in Paramount Park, the tradition was continued of recognizing Paramount High School students with the highest GPAs from the past year.

Members of the City Council and the Board of Education were on hand to congratulate students from each of the 9th, 10th and 11th grades. Here is the list of those accomplished young people and their impressive GPAs. These are all amazing students that are a positive reflection of the excellence of our school system, our community, and their wonderful families.

(It should be noted that, in the past, the top ten students from each grade were honored. This year, there was an abundance of high-performers with many shared GPAs. The top ten in 9th grade turned into the top 20. In the 10th grade, it was the top 11.)

Five Killer Social Media Marketing Tools You Need to Use Right Now

Founder and CEO at Fuze SEO (www. fuzeseo.co), a New York-based digital marketing agency. and co-founder of Nomad Coffee Club (www.nomadcoffeeclub.com).

While the future of social media marketing remains uncertain, there’s no denying it has affected the way businesses market their brands in a tremendous way.

As organizations continue to increase their spending on social media marketing, the pressure is on social media managers to ensure that each dollar spent generates results.

And as new social media platforms emerge and new features are added to the big social networks (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat), companies and marketers have no choice but to adapt how they promote messages to their respective audiences.

This is where social media marketing tools come in. With the right set of tools, you can spend less time managing campaigns and more time developing effective messages and refining existing ones.

Below, we take a quick look at the best social media marketing tools the pros swear by.

Best Campaign Management Tool: Buffer

Any social media marketer who knows what he’s doing will probably use Buffer (www.buffer.com) every day. But don’t let its popularity fool you. Buffer -- which has free and paid options -- is an incredibly useful campaign management tool that lets you

Ask The Expert

schedule virtually any kind of social media post on any platform you can think of.

Buffer also features an analytics dashboard for all posts within specific timeframes, allowing you to evaluate the performance and engagement of your posts.

Best Visual Content Creator: Canva

For social media managers whose weakness is graphic design, Canva (www.canva. com) has you covered.

As the majority of social media users gravitate towards visual content, it has never been more important for your images and videos on social media to be on point. This is where Canva (which has free and paid options) comes in, providing you with a suite of tools and templates to help you create stunning social media content for a wide variety of platforms. Whether you need to create simple ads on Facebook, complicated infographics, or even beautiful presentations and letters, Canva won’t disappoint.

While Canva is easier to use than, say, Adobe InDesign or Photoshop, it still requires basic design chops to use effectively. In other words, it may help to take a basic class on graphic design to get the most out of the tool.

Pro Tip: Canva is a great tool, but if you want to make killer graphics, pair it with a great source of beautiful stock images like Pexels (www.pexels.com) and tools like Adobe Color CC (www.color.adobe.com) which let you create color palettes using a color wheel.

Best Content Aggregator: Feedly

If content ideation is something you can’t wrap your head around, Feedly (www. feedly.com) can be the tool you need to find inspiration and discover great content to share.

Feedly is essentially a content aggregator (which makes free and paid plans avail-

able) showing a feed of content across the internet assembled based on your reading preferences. Whether you want to read about sports, technology, marketing or business, Feedly will display a single feed of what it thinks are the internet’s most relevant stories.

Pro Tip: Running out of ideas for your content strategy? Feedly is a great way to maintain a pulse on current events and breaking news, giving you valuable ideas on what to put on your blog.

Best Content Shortener: Bitly If your social media marketing campaign revolves around sharing your blog content on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, Bitly (www.bitly.com) offers (for free and for a premium) a convenient way to shorten chunky URLs that will fit nicely on practically any social media platform. More importantly, using a Bitly URL allows you to track each shortened URL’s performance on a single platform instead of dividing your attention between different sources.

Pro Tip: Use Bitly for networks like Instagram and Twitter, which don’t play nice with links. You can then track your URL activity on the Bitly dashboard, showing you the number of total clicks for each URL, as well as the most popular click sources. This list of social media marketing tools barely scratches the surface of what’s available to marketers on the internet. If you’re wondering what tool is best for you, think about your campaign’s biggest challenges. Each problem will always have the appropriate tool for the job — the trick is finding out what your most pressing issues are so you can solve them efficiently.
