The Santa Train, a Paramount holiday tradition for more than 50 years, will once again travel the streets of our city but this year will be a little different due to safety precautions because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. See details below.

For more information about holiday events in Paramount, see “From the Mayor’s Desk” on page 3 and the latest issue of CityScape on page 13. Happy Holidays, and please take necessary precautions to stay safe and well.

SANTA TRAIN DRIVE-THROUGH

—This year The Santa Train will follow the same traditional routes throughout our Paramount neighborhoods but very slowly and without stopping. The Train will operate beginning on Monday, December 7, to Thursday, December 10, starting at 6 p.m. each night. See CityScape on page 13 for the route schedule. Everyone is welcome to greet Santa by waving from a safe distance in front of their homes as he and his helpers glide by. Please remember to wear a mask if outdoors and when in proximity to non-household members, and please maintain social distancing of six feet between individuals. The traditional apples and candy canes will be handed out at the Breakfast with Santa Drive-Through event (see page 13 for details and visit paramountcity.com for additional information).

Christmas and New Year’s Day will alter refuse collection and street sweeping schedules this season. There will be no street sweeping on Thursday, December 24, or Friday, December 25, and no makeup days. There will be no trash pick-up on Friday, December 25. Trash pick-up will resume on Saturday, December 26 (if your collection day is Friday, put trash out for Saturday).

There will be no street sweeping on Friday, January 1, 2021, and no makeup days. There will be no trash pick-up on Friday, January 1, 2021. Trash pick-up will resume on Saturday, January 2 (if your collection day is Friday, put trash out for pick-up on Saturday). If you have any questions regarding garbage collection, please call CalMet at 562-259-1239.

Also, City Hall and the City Yard will be closed on December 24 and 25 and on New Year’s Day. The Paramount Sheriff’s Station will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 24 and December 25 and New Year’s Day.

Recycle your Christmas tree

After the holidays, Paramount residents who have Christmas trees can place them out at curbside for pickup. Trees will be recycled into mulch.

CalMet, the City’s refuse hauler, will pick up trees at no charge after Christmas from December 28, 2020, through January 15, 2021, for single-family residential accounts. Remove the stand and all the decorations, lights and tinsel, and do not wrap the tree or enclose it in a plastic bag. If the tree is four feet tall or less, you can put it in your green waste recycling barrel. For anything larger, just set it curbside on your normal garbage collection day by 6 a.m. Flocked trees will also be picked up.

After January 15, 2021, your tree can still be taken away by scheduling a bulky item pickup.

For apartments or condominiums, trees on the curb by 6 a.m. during the stated dates will be taken away for free on regular pick-up days. If it’s necessary to drive onto the property, there will be a $5 charge per tree, and pick-up must be ordered 24 hours before the regular pick-up day by the manager or owner, who must have the account number for verification.

Also, commercial customers must call CalMet (562-259-1239) before placing a tree out for collection so that a green waste truck can visit their location.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff (see below) of the Paramount Chamber of Commerce, I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season with hopes for a prosperous and productive 2021 as we all work together to rebuild our local economy.

Paramount Education Partnership

PEP TALK

Help Paramount students go to college

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, education must go on. Thanks to the local efforts of generous donors to help Paramount students attend college, we can ensure that our future generations are provided the opportunity to advance their educational goals.

The Paramount Education Partnership (PEP) began in 2004 by gathering input from a range of community members to find out what kind of entity would best serve their needs.

PEP’s many achievements include opening Community Learning Resource Centers that provide students and adults with computer access, homework help and a variety of other classes and programs. PEP has also created mentorship programs for young people and general outreach efforts to promote the importance of advanced education.

Perhaps the most ambitious aspect of PEP has been issuing college scholarships.

Thanks to the generosity of the local business community, nearly $1.3 million has been awarded to Paramount students attending a university, community college or technical school, with a total of 420 scholarships given out since the program’s inception.

For some of these students, these scholarships have made the difference in whether or not they could continue their educations.

All donations are made to the PEP 501c3 non-profit entity and are tax deductible. Donating to the fund also offers ways to promote a business to the community at large.

What better way—especially during such a challenging time of anxiety and uncertainty—to step up and show our youth that somebody cares and is willing to help chart an important course of success into the future?

If you’re interested in contributing through sponsorships or other donations, please call 562-220-2121.

You can view short videos about the program on the City’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/cityofparamount in the playlist titled “Paramount Education Partnership.”

Public Safety

You can report loud holiday parties anonymously

As a reminder, Los Angeles County health officials strongly discourage large gatherings during this holiday season. But if such gatherings do occur and get a little loud and bothersome, you can lodge a nuisance complaint.

Paramount has a “loud party” patrol that responds to resident complaints about such nuisances. It will also respond to your reports of large gatherings.

If a call for disturbing the peace comes into the Sheriff’s Station, there will be a visit to the location, and a first-warning notice will be issued. If a return visit is made, the responsible party (property owner, tenant, etc.) will be issued a citation and fine. A second visit within 30 days will produce a fine of $250. The third, fourth and fifth visits within 30 days of the first call will entail fines of $500, $750 and $1,000, respectively. In addition, the cost of extra resources involved (multiple deputies, helicopters, etc.) can also be assessed.

If such disturbances come from the same location over an extended period of time, deputies will focus on solving the problem with those who are causing it.

Keep in mind that deputies do not divulge the identities of any residents making complaints, so you can call in anonymously.

For information, call the Paramount Sheriff’s Station at 562-220-2002.

Online exchanges at the Paramount Sheriff’s Station—Remember during this season of shopping: If you are selling (or buying) items through an online site or phone app, remember that you can meet at the Safe Internet Purchase Exchange Zone at the Paramount Sheriff’s Station to conduct these transactions.

There is a designated parking space in the public parking lot open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Sunday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on holidays.

Though deputies will not validate transactions, the space is directly in front of the station and located in a well-lit area with surveillance cameras in place, making such exchanges safer for residents.

Please remember to keep your social distance and wear a mask during the contact.

The Station is located at 15001 Paramount Blvd. Call 562-220-2002 if you have any questions.

Vacation home checks—The State of California has issued a travel advisory for this holiday season. Californians are encouraged to stay home or in their regions and to avoid non-essential travel to other states or countries. Avoiding travel can reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission and bringing the virus back to California.

Non-essential travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature.

Essential travel includes work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic services and supply chains, health, immediate medical care, and safety and security.

If you must go out of town during this time, and you’re a Paramount resident, contact the Sheriff’s Station for a vacation home check. The City’s Public Safety Officers will periodically take a look around your home or property while you’re gone.

This free service is available throughout the year, not just during the holidays. It is best to provide the Sheriff’s Station with at least two weeks notice before you leave. Call 562-220-2002 for more information.

Social Media for Business: A Marketer’s Guide

sing social media for business can be a great way to engage with customers, view competition and develop a brand voice while determining how best to grow and adapt to the needs of the marketplace. The main social media platforms used for business include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Facebook alone has 2.7 billion active monthly users!

This article is for small business owners who want to learn about the different types of social media platforms used for business and the business benefits of using social media.

If your small business isn’t on social media, you could be missing out on significant value, including new customers, insights into your brand, and audience and engagement opportunities with customers and competitors alike. Plus, social media can be a highly cost-effective way of reaching your customers in a personalized way.

“Social media provides targeting capability, as well as reach and scale, at a lower cost than almost all other marketing channels,” said Abdul Muhammad, chief digital officer and partner at RBB Communications, in a previous Business News Daily interview. “People are on social media all day, every day—brands must go where the people are.”

If you’re considering getting your business onto social media, however, it’s important to consider which platforms are right for your business and will provide the most value.

Not every social media platform is a good fit for every business, so you should invest your time and skills in platforms where you’re most likely to reach and engage with your target audience. Each platform has a mission, purpose and unique audience. For example, Instagram is heavy on visuals, whereas Twitter allows you to inject some personality into your posts and engage with followers.

To help you learn more about the different platforms available, here are descriptions of the most popular social media platforms for businesses: Facebook—Facebook is a highly popular social media network with a varied audience, with over 2.7 billion active monthly users as of 2020. As such, every business should have a Facebook page. When used correctly, a Facebook page can be invaluable to a small business.

You can use Facebook to share everything from photos to important company updates. With a business account, you have access to powerful advertising tools and in-depth analytics. Business pages also have a lot of customization options. You can use Facebook to highlight information such as your contact information, hours of operation and the products and services you offer.

Instagram—Instagram is also incredibly popular, with around 1 billion active users in 2020. From Instagram Live to Instagram Stories, there is no shortage of tools businesses can use to promote their services and products on the site. Instagram is a visual platform based entirely on photo and video posts, so it’s best for businesses that have strong visual content to share.

way, Twitter is a great tool for quickly spreading the word. Hashtags help boost posts, and if a user with a lot of followers retweets you, your content could go viral. But with Twitter, it’s important to find balance. Don’t just share your links or media; make sure you are also sharing a lot of interesting, relevant content from other Twitter users.

Pinterest—This visually oriented platform allows users to save and display content by “pinning” digital bulletin boards, which can be organized by category. For example, a personal user might have a food board dedicated to pinning recipes, another board dedicated to photography, and so on. The platform also has a series of special types of pins called Rich Pins, which brands can use to add specific information to their pins, like product details and location maps. Every pin on Pinterest includes an image or video, making it a purely visual platform. As such, Pinterest is not the place for you to share information like your business hours.

Pinterest is great for niche businesses, but it may not be for every company. Popular categories on the site are DIY projects, fashion, exercise, beauty, photography and food. That’s not to say that businesses outside of these categories can’t succeed on the platform, but it does make Pinterest an especially good marketing tool for businesses in those areas.

Snapchat—Snapchat is another mobile-only, visual social media network that’s known for its disappearing content. Users can send videos and photos to each other or post content to their public “Stories,” which disappear after 24 hours. The app has expanded to include chat, messaging, image storage, events and media content. Now, content posted on Snapchat can easily be saved and uploaded elsewhere.

Because posts are temporary, there is less pressure to create super-polished content. You can also see how many and which specific users viewed your story. A small business will most likely utilize the platform’s “Stories” feature, but keep in mind that only users who have added you can view your “Stories” content. However, once you have an audience, “Stories” allows you to easily create story-driven and interactive content.

YouTube—YouTube is a video-sharing platform where people can view, upload, rate, share and comment on content. Now owned by Google, the site is a huge hub for news and entertainment. Many businesses on YouTube have a creative, visual or educational component. The platform is heavily creative in nature, so it’s important for you to have a dedicated video editor producing content.

However, your business doesn’t need a channel to market on the platform—there’s a subculture of YouTube influencers who publish frequent videos and often maintain large audiences. Businesses often partner with YouTubers for product placement, because these users already have engaged audiences. Using YouTube influencers can be an easier way of marketing your business on the platform, since you don’t have to put in the time and effort of creating content and building a following, which can take years.

It’s important to note that this platform is almost entirely mobile: You can’t take photos or create new posts on the desktop version (although some social media management tools, like Hootsuite and Buffer, do allow for direct Instagram scheduling on their desktop platforms). More artistic niches tend to excel on Instagram, and it may not be the best fit for your business, depending on your industry. Regardless, the person running your account must have a good eye for detail and at least basic photography skills, ensuring the photos and videos posted to your account are high-quality.

Twitter—While Twitter is great for short updates, engaging with followers and sharing links to blog posts, it isn’t for every business. On Twitter, you can share short tweets (240 characters or fewer), videos, images, links, polls and more. It’s also easy to interact with your audience on this platform by mentioning users in your posts along with liking and retweeting tweets.

If you’re a highly visual business or you don’t have a strong brand voice, you may want to skip this social media network. However, many companies excel on Twitter, such as Wendy’s, because they have a unique, on-brand voice on the platform that they use to their advantage. Other companies use this platform to handle customer service because customers who are also active on the platform will seek out companies to express concerns or share praise.

If you have interesting content and can voice that content in an engaging

LinkedIn—LinkedIn has 260 million monthly users and is the best platform for professional networking. It’s a great place to find top talent, position yourself as an industry leader and promote your business.

LinkedIn is designed to be more professional than other social media platforms and is geared toward businesses and professionals. Users create profiles that are similar to resumes, and companies can create pages that showcase their businesses. Because LinkedIn is a professional platform, it’s the best place to post job openings and information about your company culture.

You can join industry-specific LinkedIn Groups to ask and answer questions, which can help you establish brand recognition and bring users to your company page and website. Like on Twitter, it is best to have a mix of original and shared content on your page, so commit to creating polished, professional content related to your business.

TikTok—TikTok, the relatively new hit platform where users create and share short videos, can be a successful option for businesses, but only if used properly. Because TikTok is mostly popular with the infamously discerning Generation Z, it can be difficult to strike the right tone to be successful as a business. If you want to create a TikTok account, make sure you have a keen understanding of your brand and how that translates to TikTok specifically. Look at how other businesses are tackling it before you try it yourself.

Thanksgiving meals delivered to seniors

Because the traditional annual Seniors Thanksgiving Luncheon was not held this year due to the ongoing pandemic, the City of Paramount offered a free special meal for our older residents to enjoy at home.

All Paramount residents 60 and older who made reservations had their food delivered on November 23, 24 or 25—along with themed holiday face masks to remind them to stay safe during these difficult times and gift certificates provided by Domino’s Pizza. AppleCare Medical Group provided gift bags.

More than 650 meals were delivered to seniors who were unable to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families because of COVID-19 concerns.

Magda Garcia (shown at left), the city’s Senior Community Services & Recreational Supervisor, managed logistics related to gift package preparations and meal deliveries. On behalf of the city, she offered special thanks to all the businesses and volunteers who helped make this unusual Thanksgiving a more pleasant experience for our seniors in Paramount.

WaveFront Technology Inc. awarded two new patents

WaveFront Technologies Inc. recently announced that it has been issued two U.S. patents related to optical three-dimensional (3D) images and highly specialized lenses.

The first patent is for an optical product that uses unique technology developed by WaveFront to reproduce 3D images that can be incorporated into a variety of film products manufactured by the company.

The second patent is for ultra-thin Fresnel lenses—flat lenses made of a number of concentric rings that reduce spherical aberration—and methods for forming such lenses. These lenses are primarily used to manufacture films for specialty packaging. (Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788-1827) was a French civil engineer and physicist whose pivotal research in optics led to understanding and acceptance of the wave theory of light.)

The trademarked slogan for WaveFront Technology is We Control Light. Incorporated in 1996 and located in Paramount, the company is a global supplier of nano and micro-structured tools, coatings, films and appliqués used in brand identity, security, lighting, aerospace applications and displays.

WaveFront specializes in tailored micro-diffuser films used in architectural and general lighting, prismatic faceted films used in the display industry for adding brightness and efficiency to backlights used with LCDs, and diffractive films used in many packaging designs to produced eye-catching rainbow color effects. WaveFront is a Paramount Chamber of Commerce member.
