Welcome to City of London Sinfonia’s 2012/13 London season. We’ll be kicking off our new season in September with the return of a second series of CLoSer at Village Underground in Shoreditch. Described by audience members as the ”best classical club experience so far” these informal and intimate concerts are not to be missed. For this year’s CLoSer we welcome back our Principal Conductor Michael Collins and previous Guest Artist Clark Rundell, as well as introducing leading classical guitar duo, the Katona Twins, and composer and saxophonist Tim Garland. We perform with our Principal Conductor Michael Collins on both 19 September at Village Underground and 18 October at Cadogan Hall. Our return to Cadogan Hall will feature Michael as both conductor and soloist, performing John Adam’s Gnarly Buttons which he premiered in London in 1996, under the composer’s direction. In November, we reunite with stunning choir Polyphony for a repeat performance of Mozart’s ever popular Requiem, alongside John Adams’ The Wound Dresser, under the baton of our other Principal Conductor, Stephen Layton. Having received four stars from The Daily Telegraph for a “seamless and unfailingly expressive” joint performance at the BBC Proms in 2011, this year’s performance at St John’s Smith Square, featuring top soloists including Roderick Williams and Elizabeth Watts, is expected to be another impressive evening. And we haven’t forgotten the little ones! In fact this season there will be four Crash Bang Wallop! family concerts to look forward to. We’ll be making a splash at our water themed Crash Bang Wallop! in November and bringing you a spectacular festive special in December. Whether you are a regular City of London Sinfonia concert attender or considering joining us for the first time, we hope that you will share our enthusiasm for the season ahead and look forward to seeing you at a concert soon.

Stravinsky Octet John Adams Gnarly Buttons John Adams Grand Pianola Music Michael Collins conductor/clarinet Featuring music by two of America’s greatest and most interesting twentieth century composers: Igor Stravinsky and John Adams, we are joined by our Principal Conductor Michael Collins as both conductor and soloist, for what promises to be a typically energetic performance by the orchestra. Stravinsky’s Octet has become one of his most influential chamber works and was inspired by a dream, as was John Adams’ Grand Pianola Music in which he found himself driving down Interstate 5, being approached by two of the world’s longest Steinways! Gnarly Buttons is his concerto for clarinet and small orchestra, originally premiered by Michael Collins, who performs it once again with the Orchestra.
