News Hutchins Street Square update: It’s been 18 years since Hutchins Street Square fully opened, and the majestic center has been showing some signs of wear and tear – which is a good thing because that means it’s well-used! Visitors will soon notice some major improvements. Others won’t be so visible. Together, however, they will combine to make Hutchins Street Square an even more popular place for family celebrations, public events and business conferences. The most obvious change is scheduled to start in late November with replacement of carpet in the first-floor hallways and meeting rooms. This project, costing more than $90,000, is made possible by a $50,000 donation from the Hutchins Street Square Foundation. The carpet will be nearly identical to the original carpet, but of a higher quality and with sharper graphic images, due to technological advances in carpet manufacturing. Another flooring project will take place in the Holz Room, the site of the former Senior Center and adjacent to the swimming pool. The aging carpet in the Holz Room will be replaced with wood-look luxury vinyl tile that will give the room a warm, rich appearance more suitable to the business meetings and family events now taking place there. One recent project that is mostly out of view is a new wifi Internet system that was recently installed. The Hutchins Street Square Foundation also paid for the bulk of that cost, which will allow for dozens, if not hundreds, of computer and other connected devices to simultaneously connect to the Internet. The recent wine bloggers conference gave the system a first test, which handled more than 200 connections without dropping any. Some improvements are scheduled to be completed in late 2016 that will widen the pipeline so that we can begin promoting the Square for business meetings requiring Internet connectivity. Reroofing is another project being completed in phases. With most of the Square covered by a flat roof, keeping rain out is always a challenge, especially with a roof a couple decades old. Keeping Hutchins Street Square well-maintained and outfitted with modern equipment allows us to generate revenue needed to reinvest in this jewel of Lodi for many decades to come. Mike Amaral’s
