News Dear Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Patrons, A treasure hunt, park-to-park bike ride, dog park fair and a Dia de los Muertos celebration were among our first-time special events for our 75th anniversary year in 2016. They were a lot of fun and brought many newcomers to our parks and Hutchins Street Square. Although 2017 isn’t a significant milestone in the history of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, we’re still focused on providing Lodi with fun, safe, educational and healthy events that bring the community together and will continue some of our first-time events into the new year. We also have some first-time faces! Look further into this Activity Guide and you’ll find information about Julie Giometti-Wahl, our new Lodi Lake Nature Area docent coordinator, and new children’s chorus director Jessica Gazsi. We’re pleased we are able to bring that program back after a two-year absence with someone with her credentials! We also have some new cooking classes and be sure to look at the wide variety of options for children during spring break. There’s something for everyone. Hutchins Street Square will have a refreshed look in 2017, thanks to new flooring and an expanded Internet wifi system that will make that facility an even bigger draw for community and business events. Our partnership with the Hutchins Street Square Foundation continues to provide us with the financial support needed to help make these improvements happen. We are facing significant challenges, though. Measure R, the ballot measure to provide funds for park repairs, replacements and upgrades, received a majority of votes but not the two-thirds needed for passage. Addressing erosion issues at Lodi Lake Park continues to be our top priority, so many projects we hoped to accomplish will be deferred or eliminated so that we have funds needed to protect our premier park. Happy New Year! Sincerely,

Jeff Hood

News Steve Dutra Steve Dutra, who started as a youth laborer for Lodi’s Parks Division and eventually worked his way up through the ranks to become Park Superintendent, retired September 30. Dutra worked his entire municipal career in parks maintenance and, even away from his job, volunteered his time to make the community better. His career began in the early 1980s as a Parks Maintenance Worker for the City, eventually leaving to become Park Supervisor in Yuba City and later for Tracy. In 2001, Dutra returned to Lodi as Park Superintendent, always working hard to ensure a high level of customer service and going above and beyond his everyday responsibilities. “I believe the limited resources that are available to us creates many challenges, but we rise to the occasion when things like that happen,” he said. Dutra has made a huge impact on the City of Lodi’s parks. He has been a part of numerous projects, including memorial tree and bench projects, adopt-a-park, and overseeing Fourth of July at the Lake. In his retirement, he plans to stay active in Lodi’s parks through Tree Lodi, a close partner of the Parks Division that assists with tree-planting projects and special events such as Arbor Day. Dutra reflected on his more than three decades of dedication in park maintenance by stating his most memorable experience was helping the mayor plant the birthday tree with his granddaughter during the City’s centennial celebration in 2006. Dutra has been replaced on an interim basis by Steve Virrey, the Parks Project Coordinator.

News Meet Julie Giometti-Wahl, Lodi Lake’s New Docent Coordinator The Lodi Lake Nature Area Docents have a new coordinator to schedule volunteers and tours of mostly children who come to the park to learn about the riparian ecosystem along the Mokelumne River. But Julie GiomettiWahl is more than a program administrator. “The Lodi Lake Nature Area is an important outdoor space in the City of Lodi,” she said. “It is an area that allows children and adults to explore nature in an urban setting. This space gives students, and adults, an opportunity to interact with their natural world. When we walk through the nature area we are using our observation skills, our senses and our thought processes. By being exposed to the outdoor world we can have a better understanding of how we impact that world and how we can become better stewards in protecting it.” Giometti-Wahl was born in Lodi and raised in Stockton. She earned a teaching credential from Fresno State University and later a master’s degree in human development from Pacific Oaks College, with most of her career work teaching young children and working with parents and families with children up to 5 years old. When she and her husband, Duane, moved to Lodi in 2014 to be closer to family, she began volunteering for the Lodi Lake Nature Area Docents, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as a docent for the Woodbridge Ecological Preserve, and as an occasional gatekeeper for the Woodbridge Wilderness Area. The docents provided tours to 1,624 children in the 2015-2016 school year. When the docent coordinator position recently opened, others encouraged her to apply for the job. “Exposing the students, and adults, to a natural setting allows for exploration and questioning which opens our minds to why the environment around us is so important,” she said. “It helps us to understand that we are all interconnected and how important it is that we be worthy keepers of the natural world that surrounds us.” For information about Nature Area tours, or for information about the docent program, email Giomett-Wahl at jwahl@lodi.gov or call her at 559-240-5612. The Lodi Lake Nature Area Docents meet the second Thursday of each month at the Police Department Community Room, 215 W. Elm St.

Dog Daze of Summer Event at Beckman Park On August 6th Lodi PRCS hosted its Dog Daze of Summer event in Beckman Park as part of its 75th Anniversary Celebration. This event brought together dogs and their owners to participate in several dogfriendly activities. Among these were musical chairs, bobbing for balls, doggie dash, and a doggie fashion show. The fashion show was a hit! Carly, a lovely pit bull dog in a pink tutu won the grooming certificate and Pickles the greyhound dog went home with the brand new dog bed! It was a day filled with great activities such as the Disc Dogs of the Golden Gate and K-9 Officers Ryan LaRue and Robert Rench with their K-9 partners Kael and Gus. A very special thanks to Robinson’s Feed Store, Delta Humane Society, and Animal Friends Connection for participating at the event and A&A Pet Groomers for their donation of $40 gift certificate. PRCS’s Rachel Sandoval stated, “It was a fabulous turnout for the dogs and their humans and hopefully this will encourage dog owners to visit Beckman Park.”

News Dia De Los Muertos Lodi celebrated its first Dia de los Muertos event at Hutchins Street Square on October 29, sponsored by Waste Management. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a day of Mexican cultural traditions of honoring deceased loved ones that originated with the Aztecs, and has taken on elements of modern life in California.

“Events like this are a medium for people to tell their stories, traditions and culture,” said Alex Oseguera, Area Vice President and General Manager for Waste Management, whose financial support made the Lodi celebration possible. As popularity of this event grows around the world, the City of Lodi was very proud to host an event that not only was fun for all who attended, but also was educational.

As part of the Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Services’ 75th anniversary celebration, the Dia de los Muertos event was full of music, dancing, art, and food. The celebration kicked off with local Aztec dancers who blessed the nine displayed altars of local families who shared their tradition of honoring deceased loved ones with flowers, candles, breads, fruits and photographs. Kirst Hall hosted nearly 1,000 people throughout the day with traditional Mexican food, dancing and live music. Crete Hall was a hit for many guests with Day of the Dead-inspired art, including an art show and pieces from featured artist Saul Serna. Kathleen Bell won first place in the art contest with her piece, “Be at Peace.” Second place went to Federico Lopez and third place to Sue Kramer.

14th Annual Reggae and Rhone In the Charlene P. Lange Performing Arts Theater, a showing of the movie “Book of Life,” which explains the origins of Dia de los Muertos, was shown in both English and Spanish. More than 35 guests participated in the La Catrina costume contest. The winner received a gift basket from Arteagas Food Center of Lodi.

Lodi Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services were one of the two local charities who were the beneficiaries of the 14th annual Reggae and Rhone at Michael David Winery held on Saturday, August 20. From great wine and fantastic music to lighting up the sky with a spectacular fireworks show, this event was a hit. Giving Opportunities to Kids and silent auction proceeds going to the LOEL Center. The fundraiser generated $20,230 for PRCS, which will go towards improvements at Lodi Lake Park.

News Hutchins Street Square update: It’s been 18 years since Hutchins Street Square fully opened, and the majestic center has been showing some signs of wear and tear – which is a good thing because that means it’s well-used! Visitors will soon notice some major improvements. Others won’t be so visible. Together, however, they will combine to make Hutchins Street Square an even more popular place for family celebrations, public events and business conferences. The most obvious change is scheduled to start in late November with replacement of carpet in the first-floor hallways and meeting rooms. This project, costing more than $90,000, is made possible by a $50,000 donation from the Hutchins Street Square Foundation. The carpet will be nearly identical to the original carpet, but of a higher quality and with sharper graphic images, due to technological advances in carpet manufacturing. Another flooring project will take place in the Holz Room, the site of the former Senior Center and adjacent to the swimming pool. The aging carpet in the Holz Room will be replaced with wood-look luxury vinyl tile that will give the room a warm, rich appearance more suitable to the business meetings and family events now taking place there. One recent project that is mostly out of view is a new wifi Internet system that was recently installed. The Hutchins Street Square Foundation also paid for the bulk of that cost, which will allow for dozens, if not hundreds, of computer and other connected devices to simultaneously connect to the Internet. The recent wine bloggers conference gave the system a first test, which handled more than 200 connections without dropping any. Some improvements are scheduled to be completed in late 2016 that will widen the pipeline so that we can begin promoting the Square for business meetings requiring Internet connectivity. Reroofing is another project being completed in phases. With most of the Square covered by a flat roof, keeping rain out is always a challenge, especially with a roof a couple decades old. Keeping Hutchins Street Square well-maintained and outfitted with modern equipment allows us to generate revenue needed to reinvest in this jewel of Lodi for many decades to come. Mike Amaral’s

DO YOU LOVE CHILDREN AND NATURE? Lodi is very fortunate to include a 110+ acre park along the Mokelumne River with a 58-acre nature area that is home to a community of plant and animals not found in most California urban areas. Please join the docents as a volunteer, usually no more than 2-3 tours a month, depending on season, or at one of their monthly meetings and learn more about this wonder-full place we call Lodi. BECOME A DOCENT! - Lodi’s docents help instill common community values with students and give a sense of empowerment to our youth through the Lodi Lake Nature Area Docent tours. Docents communicate to our young people that they are valued as fellow stewards of the environment and can also help serve as resources for the community through a lifestyle of community service, with the understanding that all citizens play a role in the care and conservation of our urban wild areas. “Ask not what Lodi can do you for you, but what you can do for Lodi!” WHAT DOES IT TAKE? Once you have been interviewed, pass a fingerprint and background check, you will be issued a self-study Lodi Lake Docent’s manual to study on your own time. Finish a take-home test, and then you are ready to start shadowing more experienced docents to learn the ways of a good tour. No science background necessary! WHAT’S REQUIRED? Lead several tours a month or as much as you are available. Tours tend to cluster around the end of each school quarter, just before fall, winter, spring or summer breaks. Monthly docent meetings provide continuing education on the second Thursday of every month, held in the Lodi Police Department’s Community Room, 215 W. Elm St., Lodi. Interesting speaker programs focus on range of topics related to nature and the river area. No cost to you for training, manual or docent uniform. Come help build a better community through its programs!

Jessica Gazsi was raised in Chico, California where she performed regularly with community and school choirs, musical theater productions, and summer music programs. After high school, Jessica attended Biola University earning her Bachelor of Arts degree with a vocal emphasis and was the alto section leader for the Biola University Chorale. Mrs. Gazsi later attended California State University Northridge to obtain her teaching credential for music education. In 2012, Jessica Gazsi moved to Lodi where she lives with her husband, Joe, and their two young children: Penny Layne and Jude. Mrs. Gazsi is now the choral director at Lodi High School and Millswood Middle School. Jessica desires to provide singing opportunities for students of all ages, so she is beyond excited to bring back the Lodi Children’s Chorus. Her goals are to build musical skills through song and performance, expand Lodi’s musical community, and to inspire others to love singing. Hutchins Street Square is delighted to offer this opportunity to the Lodi community.
